We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted 70ft wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. In this episode, we show the current state of our engine and start the works of bringing it back to life! There's a lot of rust and way too many quick fixes so we are making sure we remove all we can and that we properly fix everything this time! A big part of strip-built construction isn't the glue-up itself, which is a satisfyingly quick process, but is the fairing and finishing process that comes after. Steve and volunteer Grant (thanks again, Grant!) fill large imperfections and voids in the seams of the glued strips with structural epoxy, then follow up that work with planing, sanding, and skim-coating with fairing filler. With the interior surface faired, it's time for a layer of epoxy primer... the same hard-wearing, two-part TotalProtect that went on the mizzen mast a couple months ago. And there's another first this week: The first peek at a painted surface inside Arabella, color and all. Luckily, Steve notices a big problem with one of the trees that anchors the boat house before its able to cause any damage to Grandpa Dave's farm implements or to the boat house itself. Next week we'll see that tree come down, and we hope you're here for it. We hope you enjoyed this episode, and we're grateful you're with us on this journey. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. It's been a big month for the America's Cup as four of the six teams unveiled their brand new AC75s. Years of development work and almost 100,000 hours of build time, there is plenty riding on each of these new launches. These are the boats that will deliver their dream of winning the America's Cup, but who's got it right? Matt Sheahan reports on the story so far and searches for early indications. Meanwhile, there was plenty of action, drama and close racing down under as SailGP headed for Sydney, Australia and Christchurch, New Zealand for the southern hemisphere stage of Season 4. We look at what happened on and off the water. We also report on the incredible story of Maiden. Thirty five years after making history in the Whitbread Round the World Race after Tracey Edward's all female crew became the first to complete the race, a new crew has provided another wave of inspiration as they complete their lap of the planet to take the top trophy in the Ocean Globe Race while setting an impressive new record. Plus, we go afloat to try out some of Henri Lloyd's latest kit, as well as delivering another double helping of Docktalk. Some craziness when some cruisers giveaway their boat!! Before they leave we have a mad night in a squall removing all the bits of equipment Ive bought from them!! Also in this episode, dealing with plastic pollution on the beach,Installing the new solar regulator and a wind generator. #sailing#cruising#liverboardsailboat#alturnativelifestyle Thank you for watching this episode, please give us a thumbs up and subscribe. On Facebook our page is ‘Adventures of an old Seadog’ and there you can find ‘realtime’ up-dates and news. Facebook https://www.facebook.com/adventuresofanoldseadog/ If you’d like to help the Old Seadog Please checkout our Patreon page on the link below. https://www.patreon.com/Adventuresofanoldseadog Contributions to the project can be made at paypal.me/seadogadventures Instagram https://www.instagram.com/adventuresofanoldseadog/ Twitter https://twitter.com/barryperrins Thanks so much for your support, The adventure continues. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. There is a lot of work going into restoring Victoria's old mast to be our mizzen mast. We already set up a sort of lathe and jig to cut kerfs into the mast so that we can then bring it down to a six inch diameter. To do that, I used a combination of a power planer and a hand plane to get down to all the kerfs. Once smooth, I'll put it on rollers for the final touches. In the mean time, Steve keeps working on the bulkheads and gives us a quick refresher tour of Victoria's other parts we'll be able to reuse. Did somebody say 100 year old Honduran Mahogany?! Finally, we are going to be revamping our Patreon account and making things simpler for everyone while at the same time adding something real fun. On May 1st, we are going to be switching to a monthly support as opposed to per creation, which means that whatever amount or tier you choose to support at, that is the bill you will get at the end of the month. No more trying to figure out how many videos you would like to support per month. We are also going to be doing monthly live question and answer sessions for Patrons. There will be a couple of tiers to chose from to benefit for that and all the sessions will be backlogged for you to look at later on Patreon. And to give you a taste of what those Q&A sessions are like, we are inviting you all to the next one, which will be on April 16th at 5:00pm EST. Click the link below to access that: https://youtu.be/2I1XZQFiy8w We are looking forward to seeing you next Friday! During our recent trip to METSTRADE in Amsterdam (think CES, but for boats), we had the chance to explore the latest and greatest in electric outboards.   Each motor seemed to have at least one standout feature from the competition, but they all share a common goal: making electric boating more accessible and efficient than ever. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of explorers, modern-day documentarians, and cultivators of curiosity. We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us. Things We're Most Curious About... GETTING OFF-GRID Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. So self-reliance and sustainable living are a must. Embark on a thrilling family sailing adventure as we navigate the breathtaking waters of the Balearic Islands aboard our brand new 2024 Fairline Targa 50 Open. This video chronicles our entire journey, from the moment we untie the ropes in Cala d'Or Marina to the final docking back home. With a mix of serene cruising, technical challenges, stunning landscapes, and a bit of family fun, this trip offers a perfect glimpse into the joys and challenges of life on the water. We begin our journey by introducing our crew and mapping out our course across the Balearic Sea. As we set sail, the video captures every step of the way, from the tranquil departure to the choppier stretches of the journey. Highlights include the beautiful approach to Mahón, one of the world’s largest natural harbours, where we faced unexpected power issues that required quick thinking and resourcefulness. Our exploration doesn’t stop there—we push on to Pollensa, Ibiza, and even Formentera, navigating through various weather conditions, including a fierce storm that tested our skills and equipment. Despite the challenges, we enjoy relaxing moments in picturesque towns, delicious meals, and even a fun boat tour that showcases the Fairline Targa 50's features. To wrap up, we dive into the nitty-gritty of boat ownership, offering an in-depth cost breakdown and a personal review of the Targa 50’s performance during our two-week adventure. We sailed Julia upwind to Fiji's remote Lau group, and were rewarded with one of the most spectacular cruising grounds we have ever visited. Vanua Balavu's Bay of Islands is filled with beautiful islets with perfectly calm anchorages and countless coves to explore. It is a dinghy sailing paradise. After an overnight passage to the seldom visited island of Makogai, we toured an abandoned leprosy quarantine station and a giant clam hatchery. Fiji's natural beauty and welcoming people have impressed us at every encounter. Julia is a traditionally built wooden boat. She is constructed to the Ingrid design by William Atkin, and was launched in 1960. Sailing can take you just about anywhere you want to go, from jungles to forests, big cities to remote villages, from places where you learn things to places where you eat things. But our favorite kind of destination is one where we’re surrounded by nature and where adventure is around every corner. On the Island of Sao Jorge, in the Azores archipelago, Adventure is not just an exciting way to pass the time; it’s a way of life. But for now we’re wrapping up our stay in nearby Horta, and are getting ready to say goodbye to our first port of call since our Atlantic crossing. At least in miles it was … 3028 miles or over 5600 kilometers of nothing but ocean. That's the amount of water you have to cross to get to the Marquesas, our next stop after the Galapagos. Thomas is still borrowed from Surya and we're so extremely happy that he came along. Enough sleep is the keyword on a trip like this, especially for the captain. Happy with the extra speed the Outremer offers us in comparison to our previous boats, even if we miss out on the wind during the last couple of days we still manage to get there in quite a decent time. Around 3100 miles sailed (Greatcircle-ish) in 13 days and a bit.

Cubera snapper are THE apex reef predator fish. They rule the reef, even chasing sharks away when they want. They are powerfully strong, have large thick scales, and big teeth. Yet are very smart and often know to avoid humans. BUT they are VERY tasty. Hands down my favorite reef fish to eat with delicious flakey white meat. Many incorrectly assume a tropical large reef fish like this would have Ciguatera. But they would be incorrect. Because as these fish grow, their diet changes. As I show in this video, this cubera snapper, is eating a lot of stingrays, instead of smaller herbivores reef fish. Meaning it is not bio-accumulating the ciguatoxin. Meaning this fish IS safe to eat, and fed many! THE LAST DAY you can get domestic shipping on time in the US is December 19, and we're a tiny operation here. If you want to support us while giving a gift, visit here: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/merchandise Next week is December's Live from the Boat Shed. $5/mo on Patreon gets you an invite! https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella An abovedecks extravaganza of important projects hurtling toward completion. Lots of progress this week, friends. Roll up your sleeves, let's dig in to making the square wooden spar round and about the galvanized shrouds for this wooden sailboat. Keith Mitchell from Shipwright Skills takes a long walk by way of a lot of passes up and down the mast. Many cuts are needed to achieve the ever-smaller facets that progress to the final round shape. The wooden mast is made octagonal, then 16-sided, then 32-sided... then laboriously sanded to round. Steve explains why we've chosen galvanized standing rigging for the shrouds. Arabella's forestay will be of stainless steel, as it needs to stand up to a furler's foil moving around it, but everything else will be parceled, served, then sloshed galvanized wire. Eyesplices captured top and bottom (top over a special piece of hardware, and bottom attached to deadeyes). We'll also check in with KP for a hot minute for the detail being routed into the overhead of the coach roof. Happy Friday! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat Referral: Need something TotalBoat sells? So we are in the process of purchasing land so we can build our own DIY mountain homestead. Two weeks ago we put in an offer on this two and a half acre piece of land near the smoky mountains in North Carolina. We’ve got a couple of weeks before we close on this property, so we’re now doing our due diligence, which basically means doing all the research to make sure that buying this property really is a good idea. Now even though we don’t own the land yet, we did get a chance to get our hands dirty this week. It felt so amazing to finally be breaking ground, working with our hands and make progress on our homestead out in these beautiful mountains. It was everything we’ve been wanting. But then we got some bad news that changed everything.
