Despite the arrival of Spring, weather just doesn't seem to want to let up. We've been struggling with the weather so as to start painting the keel timber and the ballast keel. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! Nella mia vita ho accumulato anni di esperienza nel mondo della nautica e sono venuto a contatto con migliaia di barche. Devo ammettere però, che è raro imbattersi in una barca bella come questa, nelle condizioni di questa e al prezzo di questa. La Quicksilver 755 Weekend che vi presentiamo oggi, infatti, ha una ( breve e ) particolare storia, che inizia nel 2017, anno in cui viene costruita ed acquistata dal suo precedente armatore, un padre di famiglia appassionato di nautica, che è contento di portare a casa la sua prima, magnifica barca. Può darsi, ahimè, che non avesse letto il mio libro, infatti si è reso conto immediatamente che il suo nuovo gioiello non era abbastanza grande per ospitare tutti i suoi cari e così si è rivolto a noi, per acquistare un’imbarcazione ancora più spaziosa. Questa Quicksilver, quindi, è rimasta ben presto orfana e ora non aspetta altro che un nuovo armatore che le dia la possibilità di farlo felice! La prima cosa che mi ha colpito di questa barca è la ricchezza dell’allestimento: qui non manca niente. Gli accessori non si riescono a contare, dalla tv, al fornello, al supporto del motore ausiliario, allo stereo, allo stupendo schermo Simrad da 12 pollici, che domina il cockpit. Dire che questa Quicksilver è completa è riduttivo! E’ evidente che ad una barca come questa non poteva mancare un motore straordinario: il nuovo Mercury Verado da 300 cavalli, un concentrato di potenza pura. Si tratta di 6 cilindri silenziosissimi ai bassi regimi, ma che emettono un suono irresistibile quando vengono chiamati in causa, facendoti venire voglia di affondare il gas per partire alla scoperta di nuovi paesaggi. Questo tipo di barche sono apprezzate per la loro versatilità, perché sono vivibili al 100% 4 stagioni su 4 e sono adatte a tutti i tipi di navigazione. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Setting sail in our classic wooden boat, we cross nearly the entire breadth of Fiji to cruise in the Yasawa Islands. Leaving the lush forested island of Makogai, we sail the famous Bligh Waters to the drier leeward side of the Island group. In the Yasawa and Mamanuka islands we find friendly villages and spectacular coral reefs. With the seasons changing, we start to think about another big ocean passage, looking to find safer latitudes to ride out the hurricane season. Julia is a traditional wooden boat, built of cedar and fir on oak frames. She was built in 1960 to the Ingrid design by William Atkin. Her tender is built skin-on-frame to the Annabelle design by Dave Gentry. Welcome to our shop and Matsya, our 1938 Herreshoff Marlin. Today I'll show you how to prep the trouble spots on her topsides that are bare paint and peeling paint. First I like to inspect the whole hull looking for the trouble spots. I mark the trouble spots with a piece of tape. That way they're easy to find when I go back to take care of them. Once I've found the trouble spots, I like to go with a flat putty knife and remove all the peeling paint. Only remove what is not adhered well to the hull. Now that we've scraped off the loose paint we need to sand and feather in the edges. Some of the areas will be deeper than we can feather in; we'll have to do a fill. But before we do that, we want to sand and feather the edges, and then put primer over the bare spots. With the edges faired in, the bare spots smooth, and the few deep spots we'll have to fill, we can tack rag and prepare the surface for primer. Let's apply the primer. You don't have to go thick; just do a nice job covering the surface. Our primer has dried. It's time to fill the low spots. I've mixed up a little bit of epoxy with a sanding filler, and I'm applying that. And then with a nice putty knife, smooth it out. Don't overwork it; let it cure. Our filler has cured. Now we lightly sand the edges. It won't take much. Tack rag the surface once again, and apply the final coat of primer over the filled surfaces. Let the primer dry, and her topsides are ready for prep and painting.
