We live so much in the moment when sailing, And when there’s nothing demanding your attention, your mind has plenty of room to wander. Spending days on end at sea can change your outlook on life. We really appreciate the little things and The feeling of knowing the people you love are right there beside you. Sure we have Brazil as our next destination, but like life, the journey there is just as much fun. Sitting solo in the cockpit, watching the world slowly drift by under the keel, it is hard not to contemplate about the changes that are silently happening. There are some important decisions to make, the future we are trying to build, and how we can give our family and our expecting baby the best possible life relies on making the best one. Bonita is halfway through her pregnancy, and suddenly the reality of just how quickly life is changing is sinking in. This baby is coming. And as exciting as that is, the last place we want is to be somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic ocean when the time comes. So for now, there’s nothing we can do but keep sailing and keep pondering our thoughts. One month and one week was the nine-hundred mile loop I sailed from Key West, to Panama City, to Boca Grande, and back. My mini-mid-winter odyssey. We ran into a sprawling network of drift nets, all interconnected, stretching for miles with no clear way through. They barely showed up on AIS until we were within a few miles of them, giving us almost no warning to plan a route around. Our buddy boat had it even worse — their AIS didn't pick up the nets at all, and they ended up snagged in the dark. That meant someone had to go over the side at night, diving under the hull to cut them free while the rest of us stood watch, scanning the water and the horizon for what else might be out there. This video covers the whole ordeal: the moment we first spotted the nets, the tense hours trying to navigate around a maze we couldn't fully see, the radio calls back and forth with our buddy boat once they got caught, and the long, sleepless night that followed as we kept watch until sunrise. It’s July in Melbourne. Middle of winter. I’m my office in the Melbourne CBD trying to make a quid but increasingly thinking about our next adventure on Margaret Pearl. My definition of adventure is “an activity with more than a modicum of uncertainty in the outcome”. Almost any activity can be an adventure if the right mindset is engaged. For me, it’s not always about danger and physical risk. A trip to city by train can be an adventure………The higher the level of uncertainty - the bigger the adventure. After our first winter living aboard S/V Alaskan Gypsy through an Alaska winter, we learned a few things. 😅 Last year we launched out of the shipyard in November and went almost immediately into cold, snow, short days and a lot of figuring things out as we went. This year, we actually have a little time to prepare. With summer winding down and the kids back at school, we're turning our attention toward winter aboard Gypsy: improving our heat, power and anchoring systems, getting better prepared for cold-weather dinghy travel, stocking the boat, hunting, and figuring out where in Southeast Alaska we might spend the darker months.
