There are places in the world that make you stop talking. Anchoring my sailboat *Mirage* just beneath the Statue of Liberty was one of those moments. As someone born in Russia, I've always carried the stories of those who lost everything after the Revolution of 1917. Millions were forced to leave their homeland, scattering across Europe and beyond. Their hopes, heartbreak, and longing found their way into songs that, over time, have largely been forgotten. This video is my own English adaptation of one of those songs. It's the story of a young woman whose privileged life vanished overnight, whose father was executed, and who found herself surviving among fellow refugees in Paris. More than anything, it's a song about exile, dignity, and the price people pay when history changes their lives forever. Standing beneath the Statue of Liberty - a symbol of hope for generations of immigrants - I couldn't imagine a more meaningful place to sing it. Things escalated quickly on the free 1989 Yamaha 70ETLF 70HP outboard teardown! When the powerhead wouldn't separate from the intermediate housing, I tried dropping the lower unit. Thinking a previous owner's access hole was meant for the driveshaft, I brought out the Sawzall... only to realize I just cut straight through the copper water pump tube instead! To top it all off, we found a hidden 5th bolt under the anode that was holding the lower unit all along, plus some broken casting bosses. ‘Serenata’ is a 2018 Hanse 388, listed exclusively for sale with YOTI on Pittwater. Designed by Judel/Vrolijk & Co and built by Hanse Yachts, the 388 carries the hallmarks that have made Hanse one of the world’s largest and most successful sailing yacht builders. The self-tacking jib and in-mast furling mainsail make ‘Serenata’ easy to sail, while the twin-wheel cockpit provides plenty of room to move around. She is a one-owner boat that presents incredibly well. It is clear she has been well cared for and has enjoyed a relatively easy life cruising around Pittwater. Below deck, the popular two-cabin layout provides generous accommodation while allowing for an enlarged galley, creating an enjoyable space to prepare meals and drinks. Without a third cabin, there is also a dedicated storage area aft to port. French Oak furniture, Delight Oak flooring and upgraded grey upholstery create a modern, inviting interior, while a custom comfort mattress has been added to the forward cabin. Blinds with flyscreens and 12V fans in both cabins are ideal for Pittwater’s summer evenings, while an Eberspächer diesel heater keeps things comfortable during the winter months. The Elvstrøm Dacron sails comprise a fully battened mainsail and a self-tacking jib, both on furling systems. Two electric Lewmar 40ST winches and two manual Lewmar 40ST winches are complemented by ten Spinlock clutches, with an adjustable backstay completing the sail controls. The cockpit features a bimini, dodger, connecting panel between the two, cockpit cushions and wheel covers. A Zodiac 270 dinghy with an aluminium floor and Yamaha 6hp four-stroke outboard are included, making trips ashore easy. Navigation is taken care of by a comprehensive B&G electronics package, including a 9-inch Zeus³ chartplotter at the helm, two Triton multifunction displays, a hydraulic ram autopilot, a V50 VHF at the chart table, a B&G handheld VHF and an AIS transponder. The electrical system is equally well equipped, with twin 160Ah AGM house batteries installed in August 2024 and monitored by a Victron battery monitor. A 250W solar panel mounted on the bimini feeds through a smart charge controller, while a Mastervolt charger and 240V shore power provide additional charging options. Power comes from a Yanmar 3YM30AE 29hp diesel engine with just 348 hours. The engine and saildrive were serviced in May 2026. ‘Serenata’ is a well-presented, recently serviced and thoughtfully equipped cruiser, ideal for those looking to enjoy easy sailing on Pittwater and further afield. Anthony Bell launched his new charity campaign raising funds for the Loyal Foundation at Woolwich Dock. Guests included John Bertrand, Layne Beachley, and Larry Emdur. Olympic gold medallist Tom Slingsby will be the sailing captain and two of the celebrity sailors for this year will be Anthony Minichiello and Phil Waugh.

We were invited for showers at the Fishguard Bay Yacht Club. Unfortunately the timing meant a dinghy ride across the exposed harbour in a fairly strong Northerly wind and a falling tide. As we turned in we had one wave that came close to tipping us over and then I turned and we started surfing. One wave broke just as it reached us and quite a lot of water came in over the stern. Once we made it in we were rather shaken, wondering how we would manage to get out through the surf. In the end we realised that if we waited 4 hours the tide would be coming in and deep enough that we could sneak out around the harbour wall with the breakers further into the harbour. So we went for a long walk, coffee and some food shopping. The trip back was much less eventful. After crossing the Atlantic, ours has grown long, so we sail from Tobago to Grenada, the Spice Isle, ready to finally tackle it. If we can get there first. But one job has been hanging over us for years: replacing the original aluminium holding tanks on our Leopard 46 catamaran. He has sailed his Tiwal 3 dinghy on inland waters and the Great Lakes for over a year. Having grown up sailing a Pintail with his dad, he loves this boat's hybrid windsurfer-sailboat feel, keeping him close to the water. He thrills at fast-paced solo sailing in 20-to-25-knot winds, yet the deck is roomy and comfortable enough to take friends or his kids out on the water. This portable sailboat is brilliantly designed for quick rigging. He can fully rig it from its stowage bags in just twenty minutes, transporting them securely on his roof rack for family vacations. For short local trips, he leaves it inflated in his truck bed, launching in just five minutes. He notes that one must adapt sometimes: he once capsized with his youngest son, and a jammed swivel cleat caused them to roll over six times. However, once the technique is learned, righting the hull is incredibly easy. Thanks to this vessel, he achieved his goal of sailing all five Great Lakes, a feat impossible with a traditional sailboat. His favorite passage was crossing the Straits of Mackinac to Mackinac Island, a spot normally reached only by ferry or plane. In Memory of John Ripard Snr (1929 – 2026) This tribute honours John Ripard Snr, Honorary President of the Royal Malta Yacht Club, Olympian and one of the founders of the Rolex Middle Sea Race. Together with his brother Paul, Jimmy White and Alan Green, John helped bring the Middle Sea Race to life in 1968. He skippered Josian to victory in that first edition and won again in 1970 aboard Tikka II. More than half a century later, the race he helped create draws sailors from across the world to Malta each October. His passion for the sea and his generous spirit inspired generations of Maltese sailors, and his legacy continues through the John Ripard Course Record Trophy and the many members of the Ripard family who still race today.
