In this Episode we head from Athens, sailing through the Cyclades to Delos to explore the remains of a great city. Then it's a short hop over to Mykonos were we get stuck because of a storm. Mykonos has to be one of the most beautiful Islands in Greece and certainly a great spot to be trapped by a storm. We are the Robbins family sailing on our boat named Nikau. We are a family of 5. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day! We've traveled from New Zealand to Sardinia in Italy to pick up our boat and we plan over a few seasons to sail her back to New Zealand. We hope you enjoy following us on our adventures! We have a Volvo Penta md 2030 and had troubles anytime we ran it over 1700 rpms. Saltwater would mix with our freshwater cooling system, the overflow tank would fill instantly and proceed to flow into the boat. This is a diy troubleshooting process that ends in success! Negotiating the inconsistent winds and managing to get into Malta in short time I was then reunited with Ilyana (this is Romanian for Elayna.) It was great for us to spend a little time apart and for her to be able to hang out with one of her besties from home but it was even better to be back together again. Hard at work in the boatyard in Guaymas, Mexico we take some time enjoy the local culture in between all of the dirty work. Taking local Mexican busses around, sampling Mexican street food, trying to adopt the stray dogs, and taking in the local festivities for Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead and the local Festival de las Calacas. If you experience water drips from your siphon valve vent hose the valve inside can be stuck or filled with dirt. The valve is one of the overlooked things in many boats but must be checked regularly. The system is in many boats mostly a unit made of steel but in my boat it is a 100 US Dollar plastic valve made by Vetus who also make a lot of good quality equipment for boats.

The second half of our sailboat delivery was not smooth sailing like the first. Our sail was on schedule despite the weather moving in, but the captains lack of planning made the route longer than expected. We did get to sail in low wind most of the way from Charlotte Harbor to Longboat Key. Where we had planned to bring Dodi, our sailboat, in to the ICW was impassable. We had to go further north of back south were we came from. It made for a much longer day and we had to navigate at night! That's the boat life. This is The Boat Life. In this vlog, we make storm preparations to our boat for the impending arrival of hurricane IRMA. Yes, for the 10 days prior to this somewhat spontaneous trip, we watched the weather reports very closely indeed. We saw the birth of this monster storm off the West Coast of Africa. We saw it devastate the windward islands, the DR, Puerto Rico, and skim across the top end of Cuba. The whole time we were hoping that it take a turn to starboard and head back out to sea. That never happened. We packed the car and headed to Florida. The whole way down we watched the Northbound traffic rushing in the opposite direction... an unnerving thing to see or sure. 95% of the traffic is headed in the direction opposite of the way you are headed. We arrive at the boat with specific plans to prep the boat and leave again the very next day. In fact, we bring enough gasoline with us in the car to get us safely back home, round trip - just in case all the gas station are sold out... a preparation that paid off. Most of the gasoline pumps in FL had plastic bags over the handles. So in less than 48 hours we arrive in Green Cove, prep the boat, and make it back to Toccoa, GA. We explored the southern part of Thailand and did some island hopping. The Deep Water solo climbing in Railay, Krabi was a unique experience and so was snorkeling with sharks in Koh Phi Phi.
