E74 Weekly Vlog of Life in a Nutshell sailing travels. We wake up to a strange sight in the bay. A couple of Panamanian beer reviews. More boat fixes and government paperwork. Then we head out into the big blue for the first real day of our adventure around the world. It’s not all plain sailing, we get big winds and big seas through the night! Thank you all for watching and supporting this amazing adventure. The Balearic Islands to Cartagena Spain, this was our fourth passage for 2014. We sailed from Ibiza to Cartagena stopping at Altea and De Las Dunas along the way. We took a ride on the train from Cartagena to Barcelona stopping at Valencia to meet up with our dear friend Fiona plus Martha and Bob. We had a great time playing tourists and we all got back to Cartagena in time for Carthaginian and Roman festival. This is another re-make video for your enjoyment and for our memories. Really appreciate the support, check out the Patreon for more access and perks: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon If Patreon isn't your thing, I also have a Paypal.me link: paypal.me/ShelbyandSimon I've also created an Amazon Wish List if you'd like to purchase specific items I'll need as the build continues: http://a.co/dx7F4dz I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel to world. I make travel vlogs sharing my ups and downs, adventures on motorbikes, sailboats, and vans. Instagram: @Finding_Simon Snapchat: Finding_Simon Twitter: @FindingSimon Donations: paypal.me/ShelbyandSimon Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon Merchandise: http://simonstiles.com/finding-simon/ :::::::FAQ::::::: - How do you afford to travel constantly? A: I travel really cheap, free camping, cooking my own meals, being as efficient as possible. I make my income almost entirely on YouTube but it's really tight. Ad revenue, patreon, paypal donations, merchandise sales and affiliate links bring in about as much as a part time minimum wage job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough I go back to work, doing photography mostly, sometimes commercial video projects, but it takes me away from my travels and videos. - How much does it cost? I spend on average $2000 travelling, most of which is gas, some repairs, food, and on average less than $200 on any eating out, shopping or extra curricular expenditures. I make $200 a month from YouTube and $400 from Patreon. The rest I make from my work. - What camera do you use? Sony A7ii, DJI Mavic Pro, Rode Videomic with Deadcat, Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, DIY tripods and lights. - What is your bike? 1999 Yamaha Vstar XVS1100 with a Champion Escort sidecar. - What kind of boat is that? It's a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 - What're your plans? Fix it up, run nothing but green power, sail off into the sunset. - How do you find all these cool places? To gain access to my complete research you need to hit me up on Patreon, but here's a few sites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/ https://www.campendium.com/ http://www.atlasobscura.com/ https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - What do you do for Internet? I use coffeeshops and libraries to upload episodes a few at a time, I also use my wifi antenna (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5T9lNM8Mukk&t=2s) and a data package on my phone (10GB) - How do you live on the road with a dog? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with my dog anyways, especially if it's warm out in the middle of the day. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make some decisions, avoiding places that ban dogs, and spending more time out in nature instead of in the cities. - What happened to the girl? We decided to go separate ways (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPgxDIXxCjY&t=4s) - Are you rich or something? definitely not. I've spent some quality time homeless, I've struggled financially most of my life, and although I'm blessed with great friends and family as well as being able bodied white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to travel the world. You need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, time with family, and often your career but it is possible. - Why don't you have 10x more subscribers? My channel isn't that old, many of the bigger channels you can compare mine to started putting out videos a couple years before I began. I could always use your help sharing my videos, spreading the word, and connecting with cross promotional opportunities. Editing and travelling tend to take up all my time. - Where are you now? The top perk on my Patreon page is a live link of my location on google maps so you can get an active idea of where I am currently. If that's not an option for you there's also Instagram and Instagram stories that give you a much better idea of what I'm up to today.
This episode will be a retrospective of our Tiny Shipping Container House from the foundations all the way to where we are right now, the building of the openings. This is the ninth episode towards our goal of building, by ourselves, a Tiny Shipping Container House and producing a Youtube Series about it called Living Tiny Project. Measuring tension on continuous control lines is important to ensure you are on-top of the setup of your rig and sail shape. This video shows you how to create a reference point to allow you to measure the full range movement of your boats backstay. ▶ Check out my gear on Kit: https://kit.com/sailingsatori On The Hook (OTH) is a little bit of a departure from our regular "Cruising Log" episodes. Our "On The Hook" videos will be more of a conversational and topical nature, as opposed to a highly edited travel chronicle. Here we will discuss special Sailing Satori news, boating topics, product reviews, and whatever else we feel is important at the time. In this episode, we talk about our cruising "plans". We cover where we have been so far, and our ideas for the future. Our regular episodes are about 7 months behind, so we wanted to give you guys an update. As our regular episodes progress, we will work on catching up to only a few months behind real time. We still plan to release our regular episodes every other week, with "On The Hook" videos in between. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch. Nick, Kelly and Arthur For more sailing action! Here we are documenting our journey as we travel the world with our dog Arthur aboard Satori (1989 Morgan 44 Center Cockpit Sailboat). This is a story of sailing and adventure, but its also about the beautiful souls we meet along the way. It’s a story of two people living their lives a little differently in order to gain a new perspective on our beautiful planet and the people in it. Our experiences have affected us in such a way, we are sharing them in the hopes that others will find the inspiration to do what they are passionate about. Follow your dreams!

WE ARE FINALY SAILING TO THE BAHAMAS! Wow the past month and a half has been an adventure for sure! After driving across the country from Oregon to Florida with our sailboat and having the worst BAD LUCK in the entire world we are SO READY to get to the Bahamas! We woke up around 3 A.M. this morning and got ready to cross the Gulf Stream. The crossing was very calm and easy sailing and took us around 12 hrs. to get to Alice Town in The Bahamas. We came across several ships heading North and South with out any problems, except for one. The ship was broadcasting AIS which was helpful until we realized his information was totally wrong! We ended up giving way to the ship to let it pass by us and in the process the boom swung across the boat and the main sheet whip-lashed Kenzie in the arm really hard! The force knocked her phone out of her hands and she said it was like slow motion watching it bounce on the side of the boat twice before landing in the cockpit. Her phone almost went for a swim....oops. Now she has a scar across her left arm that will always remind her of our sailing adventure. We are just glad it wasn't worse than that. We got to Alice Town and got a slip at Browns Marina. The place was really nice and we couldn't get over how crystal clear the water was. Kenzie's first impression of the Bahamas wasn't that great though. She thought it was a creepy place and was worried we would get attacked if we walked around the town, but realized that the people were nice, it was just a creepy run down town. ********************************************************************** We are now FINALLY getting to the good stuff! The Trade Winds finally show up, but are short lived. I blow out my medium air yankee trying to drive the boat faster, trying to reach our destination before the winds veer southeasterly and die away ... Music: 06:18--La Di Da Land--Kevin Boothby
Paragon is bustling with activity. Drake has another go with the SSB with the hope of downloading a weather fax while the question of fresh water continues to loom large. We can't push off until the tanks are filled and just when we think we've solved the problem, disaster strikes. All work and no play is no fun, so the crew splits up and it's date night aboard Paragon! The sun is out until the wee hours, so join us as we blow off a bit of steam in St. John's! This week we take our first sail in South Africa and get to see table Mountain from the ocean side. We see our new sailboat we will be using sailing and learning how to sail in rough conditions. My dollar boat is sitting waiting for us to come back with lots of sailing experience so we can take her wherever we want to go. Sailing around the world is a term thrown around but we want to have good sailing experience before we do this. We don't have a luxury yacht bet we will sail our little sailboat as far as we can. To avoid collisions at sea we have to gear up and sail in all conditions especially because I am sailing with children and cruising on a boat with a child is a big responsibility. We hope you like this episode of our travels and that you enjoy seeing some more of South Africa. Thanks to your support, we can keep the movies coming every week and continue sailing and sharing this incredible adventure with you all. There is no way for us to explain how much we appreciate it!

Hello fellow dreamers! I can't believe we've made it this far! After enjoying nearly a month in Fiji, we made a tough decision to skip New Zealand and head west, straight to Australia, to sell our boat. Although we'd had big plans for NZ we were concerned about the difficult seas on the passage from Fiji to NZ; and we were also told that the market for boat sales is larger in Oz than in NZ. I broke this sail down into two episodes since it was pretty lengthy. In today's episode [Part 1], we prepare for and set off on our very last passage in this monohull: 1500nm (10 days) from Fiji to Australia. Stay tuned for next week's Z-log on "Guns on Boats" and then Part 2 of our Sail to Australia! Cheers friends! I'm removing it from the description. It started to leak very badly. I have ordered a Holly regulator ( Holly 12-804 1-4psi regulator: https://goo.gl/Q8wbKr) as a replacement. I'll update again after I've had a chance to review it. -- Franny We have Miss Lemon Drop back in the garage for a fuel pump replacement. You may remember that she pooped out on the way home and Heidi and I got her running again. The owner (Jerry) purchased a new pump “kit” with the pump, rod, spacer, and gaskets. I go through the installation of the pump, and also a check of the fuel pressure. That was a big surprise! At 5psi, it was twice what the carburetor specs. VW says to add a gasket or two to raise the pump and thereby limit the rod throw to lower the pressure. The problem with these aftermarket pumps is that if you go the route, you will have to grind the rod so much to get the pressure down, the flow will be too low to support the needs of the engine at running RPMs. The only real solution is to install a pressure regulator to meet the requirements of the float bowl needle and seat in the carburetor while still maintain adequate flow.
