Do you dream of living on a boat? In this how-to video about living on a sailboat and becoming a full-time liveaboard cruiser, we answer many of the questions we are regularly asked, including how much does it cost to be a liveaboard, and what should my monthly budget be? OUR GUIDE: If you want to sell up and set sail, but have lots of questions, please read our guide, "How to be a liveaboard cruiser". This guide, which accompanies the video, contains more in-depth information than we could cram into the episode, as well as additional chapters. Find out more about the guide here: https://followtheboat.com/product/how-to-be-a-liveaboard-cruiser/ We were inspired by the many people who contact us wanting to know how to become a liveaboard cruiser, and we hope that this guide will go some way to pointing anyone with even just the glimmer of a dream in the right direction. | Season 2 | Episode 16 | Angels Gate to Coches Prietos Anchorage, Santa Cruz Island of the Channel Islands of California. The last week of 2017 I took an amazing solo sailing trip to the Channel Islands. I visit six anchorages on Santa Cruz Island before sailing for Catalina Island and tying up in Isthmus Cove for New Years Eve and meeting up with Meital. We sailed back on New Years Day enjoying sunshine, great wind and thousands of dolphins. On this episode I prepare Triteia for the long trip and push off for Santa Cruz Island. The over night passage was 22.5 hours / 77 nm finally coming to anchor at Coches Prietos Anchorage on the southern shore of Santa Cruz. While I was on my trip I started my first podcast and the first episode is up online now. The podcast is titled “A STERN VIEW” and is something of a cruising guide to anchorages and sailing destinations. Each episode is recorded on location and I cover everything I know about the anchorage from my research and experience at the anchorage. I also kept a journal in my logbook and will be posting them as a blog with still photos. This will act as support to the A STERN VIEW podcast as will each new video episode that features the anchorage covered in the podcast episodes. The journal and first Podcast can be seen and heard here: http://svtriteia.tumblr.com If you like the podcast please subscribe to it on iTunes and rate / review it as it helps in the ratings! https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/a-stern-view-podcast/id1330902085?mt=2 I will make the podcasts and blog posts available to my Patron’s before the rest of the public. If you would like to contribute you can do so here https://www.patreon.com/sailorjames Also if you like this video please give it a thumbs up! It helps me get more viewers! Thanks to all of you for watching and being so supportive with your comments and likes in 2017! It makes me really happy to know you like the videos and to hear your feedback. Happiest New Year to you all! Fair Winds, Sailor James
Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** We saved the best of Tonga's Ha'apai Group for last as we were the only humans around to witness a newborn humpback calf being helped to the surface by it's mother in order to take it's first breaths. This was an amazing instance of being in the right place at the right time, and it's definitely a moment we'll remember forever. I'm also quite proud to share that we managed to successfully fly our big blue spinnaker twice without ripping it while moving between islands. Given our prior history with the sail (3 rips in 6 total deployments), I was ecstatic to even have a little bit of success. Hopefully we'll continue to get better and get a lot more use out of the sail! After all the excitement with whales and sails, the time had come to leave Tonga and sail to Fiji. On our way out, Amy and I both looked at each other and said "I'm so glad we decided to come here this year." The Ha'apai Group is such a pristine, remote collection of islands, so infrequently visited by cruisers and it became a very special place for us. Thanks for watching! Be sure to check out our FB page and blog for more info about where we are now and where we're going: https://www.facebook.com/outchasingstars http://www.outchasingstars.com Thanks for watching! Hi Everyone, Today is just something fun! RouteGurus sent me their “Micro Careful” Wash Mitt kit to take a look at so I need something to test against, so I pulled out an Adam’s Polishes wash pad I’ve been meaning to try out. So, which one is best?? That is what I work through in a series of “Highly Scientific” tests. I get to the nitty-gritty 😊 of which one does what. The best part is that I managed to work a 30% off for you guys on either (or both) the RouteGurus or any of the five Adam’s Polishes mitts/pads. This was all for fun and to get you a fun special 😉 The fine print: I’m not sponsored by either company and am not making any money on the sale of any of these products. RouteGurus did send me their mitt kit to review, but I bought the Adam’s Polishes Pad. The waffle drying towel I used I also bought from Adam’s. Ok, coupons and links: • RouteGurus (HNF30DIS): Amazon page: http://amzn.to/2kXhOfQ RouteGurus' website: www.routegurus.com • Adam’s Polishes (H&F30) (five Mitts/Pads - 10" wash pads, red wash mitts, merino wool mitts, and wash sponges. The Square or Reef Knot is a must know knot which has many applications both on the boat and around the boat park. From securing sails to the mast or boom, to reefing sails or holding all manner of objects in place the reef knot turns a single length of line into a multi purpose tool. By following the simple right over left, then left over right drill you will complete the knot in seconds while avoiding the dreaded granny knot. In this episode, we overcome our fears and set off in the middle of the night towards the NORTH SEA. The Elbe river showed a little of his power and made the passage the most brutal we’ve ever had. Very strong winds combined with currents, waves and giant ships, for sure it was quite an experience. After, the sailing became so good that we extended our passage further south until we reached the summer in The Hague. Join us in this episode with lots of sailing, gigantic ships, night watches and summer in Europe. We hope you enjoy it and don't forget to give us a like and subscribe. Lots of love from us!! The free sailboat we obtained was in Titusville, FL and we needed to move it as close to home as possible to begin working on it. We had some time off because of Thanksgiving break so we decided to get the boat as ready as possible and set off on the 4-5 day trip through the Intracoastal Waterway, Okeechobee Waterway, and Gulf of Mexico. The diesel engine decided to die half-way through the trip, causing us have to leave the boat in Ft. Myers for a week while it was repaired. Ryan and Kelsey from Abandon Comfort joined us for this last leg of the trip. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ Link to Abandon Comfort: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWEuc8WWF27NgRceefN0CUw ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. Kontakt CHARTERBAR Yachting: CHARTERBAR Yachting GmbH & Co. This TriRadial Cloth will have better sail shape than any cross cut sail and because of the laminate construction it will hold it's sail shape longer while under load and over it's entire life. Taffeta laminated on both sides of this cloth gives the cloth the life span that cruisers are looking for. Precision Sails custom designs Genoa Sleeves and produces them using Sunbrella to match any other canvas you may have on your boat. Genoa sleeves are a great way to protect your furling headsails without adding the additional weight to the sail itself. The sleeve includes a full length zipper as well as line to ensure the sleeve is nice a tight around your headsail and velcro straps at the base to keep it closed. When you are looking to replace your Tanzer 25 headsails make sure you call Precision Sails and discuss a sail similar to this. A great design will allow you to point higher and sail flatter and the Precision Sails 300 Series Dacron will last most coastal cruisers for years. Music by Andrew Rothschild (https://soundcloud.com/aroths) Really appreciate the support, check out the Patreon for more access and perks: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon If Patreon isn't your thing, I also have a Paypal.me link: paypal.me/ShelbyandSimon I've also created an Amazon Wish List if you'd like to purchase specific items I'll need as the build continues: http://a.co/dx7F4dz I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel to world. I make travel vlogs sharing my ups and downs, adventures on motorbikes, sailboats, and vans. Instagram: @Finding_Simon Snapchat: Finding_Simon Twitter: @FindingSimon Donations: paypal.me/ShelbyandSimon Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon Merchandise: http://simonstiles.com/finding-simon/ :::::::FAQ::::::: - How do you afford to travel constantly? A: I travel really cheap, free camping, cooking my own meals, being as efficient as possible. I make my income almost entirely on YouTube but it's really tight. Ad revenue, patreon, paypal donations, merchandise sales and affiliate links bring in about as much as a part time minimum wage job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough I go back to work, doing photography mostly, sometimes commercial video projects, but it takes me away from my travels and videos. - How much does it cost? I spend on average $2000 travelling, most of which is gas, some repairs, food, and on average less than $200 on any eating out, shopping or extra curricular expenditures. I make $200 a month from YouTube and $400 from Patreon. The rest I make from my work. - What camera do you use? Sony A7ii, DJI Mavic Pro, Rode Videomic with Deadcat, Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, DIY tripods and lights. - What is your bike? 1999 Yamaha Vstar XVS1100 with a Champion Escort sidecar. - What kind of boat is that? It's a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 - What're your plans? Fix it up, run nothing but green power, sail off into the sunset. - How do you find all these cool places? To gain access to my complete research you need to hit me up on Patreon, but here's a few sites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/ https://www.campendium.com/ http://www.atlasobscura.com/ https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - What do you do for Internet? I use coffeeshops and libraries to upload episodes a few at a time, I also use my wifi antenna (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5T9lNM8Mukk&t=2s) and a data package on my phone (10GB) - How do you live on the road with a dog? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with my dog anyways, especially if it's warm out in the middle of the day. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make some decisions, avoiding places that ban dogs, and spending more time out in nature instead of in the cities. - What happened to the girl? We decided to go separate ways (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPgxDIXxCjY&t=4s) - Are you rich or something? definitely not. I've spent some quality time homeless, I've struggled financially most of my life, and although I'm blessed with great friends and family as well as being able bodied white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to travel the world. You need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, time with family, and often your career but it is possible. - Why don't you have 10x more subscribers? My channel isn't that old, many of the bigger channels you can compare mine to started putting out videos a couple years before I began. I could always use your help sharing my videos, spreading the word, and connecting with cross promotional opportunities. Editing and travelling tend to take up all my time. - Where are you now? The top perk on my Patreon page is a live link of my location on google maps so you can get an active idea of where I am currently. If that's not an option for you there's also Instagram and Instagram stories that give you a much better idea of what I'm up to today.
After a last day sail up the coast of Tenerife, me and my cousin have a last night in Santa Cruz. And it's a pretty good one, but he's gone back home. And I go to see some amazing sights. Some pretty some not. All in all Tenerife is one incredible island to see. Please make your voice heard: Subscribe, like, dislike, or comment. Smooth sailing from Port Everglades to Government cut in Miami and up to Virginia Key where we anchored for the night. We did not capture it on camera but we had the most incredible view of the bright night Miami skyline. We enjoyed it exactly how we wanted.. from a distance. Miami is an awesome place but we aren't too fond of cities in general so we are just passing through... http://tulasendlesssummer.com/shop-tula/ Support our videos through Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/Tulasendlesssummer Amazon Affiliate Link (just click and do your normal amazon shopping - no extra cost to you) - http://amzn.to/2stGEXv Our Store - https://www.amazon.com/shop/fikitensup Jetty’s Vlog!!! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1QACxBejLXp4d5KH4DpPbg @1CaptainBill @SierraaaElizabeth @JettyTheGypsy Facebook.com/TulasEndlessSummer OUR NAVIGATION SETUP: iPad mini 3 (we use Navionics app sold separate) - http://amzn.to/2rUDzTr Waterproof case for iPad mini - http://amzn.to/2sxrnYs Cradle for iPad mini in case - http://amzn.to/2sp0Gpt Mount for iPad mini in cradle (buy multiple bases for multiple mounting locations) - http://amzn.to/2soZXEM ESSENTIAL GEAR: Skin safe, reef safe, organic sunblock - http://amzn.to/2pe7dQO Drone (relatively cheap - compared to others - but amazing quality and functionality) - http://amzn.to/2puw4R3 Gopro Hero 4 - http://amzn.to/2qgCBNh Waterproof iPhone case - http://amzn.to/2qgDMw9 Flexy Tripod for phone - http://amzn.to/2qfFwsq Awesome Waterproof Handheld VHF we use - http://amzn.to/2sjGZyV Essential Boatlife Reading: Chapmans Bible (should be on every boat or in every boaters home) - http://amzn.to/2rUxPsL This Old Boat (Good if your fixing up an old boat like we do) - http://amzn.to/2suev2r "The Essentials of Living Aboard a Boat" - http://amzn.to/2s7TKwt "Twenty Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere" - http://amzn.to/2sFzkrd "20 Affordable Sailboats To Take You Anywhere" - http://amzn.to/2s7ww9A Towboat U.S. unlimited towing (we used them and glad we had the membership otherwise our tow would have cost over $550!) - http://bit.ly/2sDCtdN Check out our sponsors! We didn't know how long we'd be stuck on the coast of Florida, but it turns out we were given a window to get to the Bahamas! Getting to the Palm Beach Inlet took a full day of motoring from Stuart, full of the bascule bridges we would love to try and avoid if only we trusted the two inlets north of Palm Beach. And the weather window we had been rushing to get of course changed course on it. A few extra days hanging around Palm Beach, and we were given the weather window we were looking for to get to the Bahamas. With nice 15 knot winds out of the south, we thought the crossing would be everything we'd planned for it to be, except the Gulf Stream had other plans in mind for us. Cheers from the Bahamas!
