I left the beautiful island of Makatea at sunset, threw the spinnaker up, and was ready for a peaceful 36 hour downwind sail. The boat had other plans. At midnight, the spinnaker halyard chafed and the sock got stuck. At 5:30 am, I did a routine check, only to find the boat flooded with saltwater. ⛵ Sailing the Thorny Path: Bahamas to Turks & Caicos + A Powerful Refugee Encounter We leave the Bahamas behind and begin our eastward journey across the thorny path — a notorious 700-mile + stretch where the tradewinds blow against you the whole way. A weather window gave us the chance to make this tough passage smoother, and we took it! This leg of our adventure was special for two reasons: we celebrated our captain’s birthday aboard, AND we made the call mid-passage to stop in Turks & Caicos instead of continuing to the Dominican Republic. But when we arrived, we witnessed something we’ll never forget — Haitian refugees being escorted off boats by heavily armed police. Experiencing that up close was heartbreaking and brought a heavy dose of reality to our cruising life. After processing what we saw, we set out to revisit some of our favorite TCI spots — dreamy beaches, ice cream runs, dinghy exploring, sushi at Solana, and yes… Weston got dreadlocks! I've upgraded the Victron Ekrano display and added a Victron BMV-712 Smart battery monitor for the House 48 volt bank. Currently charging from shorepower so we can set the battery monitor to a known 100% battery state. Also connected 2 more 175 watt solar panels (now 1130watts in total). With summer ending faster than we would have liked, we sailed on through Massachusetts. There were too many possible stops to do everything we would have liked, so we chose: Gloucester, Marblehead/Salem, Cape Cod Canal and Cuttyhunk. Then on to Rhode Island with stops in Newport and Block Island. Don't miss Hammond Castle and Newport Cliff Walk! Gloucester - past Ten Pound Island, famous for The Perfect Storm. We picked up a city mooring. https://www.gloucester-ma.gov/179/City-Moorings Our first stop ashore was the Gloucester Fishermen's Memorial. The list of names is staggering: 5,368 men lost between 1716 and 1923. https://www.gloucester-ma.gov/74/Lost-at-Sea Hammond Castle, built between 1926 and 1929, was the fortress of John Hays Hammond Jr., the "Father of Radio Control." This is the genius who, with hundreds of patents to his name, successfully piloted a full-sized ship from Gloucester to Boston at just 26 years old using only radio control. It’s a MUST see. Read about more of his inventions here. https://hammondcastle.org/curators-picks/ Marblehead & Salem - Nothing prepares you for 2,000 mooring balls packed along its 14 miles of shoreline. https://marbleheadma.gov/harbormaster/ The Cape Cod Canal: At 7.5 miles long, 32 feet deep, and the world’s widest sea canal at 540 feet, its currents are formidable. We sailed down from Marblehead on a screaming 25-knot beam reach, our SOG hitting a thrilling 9 knots. We shot the entrance perfectly, but deep inside, the tide turned. For about an hour, we slogged against wind and tide, making a painful 3 knots while cyclists on the shore path breezed past us—that was embarrassing! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_crossings_of_the_Cape_Cod_Canal After a call night in Onset Harbor, we weighed anchor at dawn for a glorious sail across Buzzards Bay. We made landfall at Cuttyhunk in a thick fog, but the next day was beautiful for hiking and enjoying the views. Our passage continued to the epicenter of American sailing: Newport, Rhode Island. Plenty of restaurants and shopping of course. But Our favorite shore leave was the Cliff Walk, a spectacular 3.5-mile path with panoramic ocean views, stunning, century-old Gilded Age mansions, and beautiful = well - rocks!. https://www.discovernewport.org/things-to-do/cliff-walk/ Our final port of call was Block Island. We dropped the hook in the Great Salt Pond and rented scooters to tour the island, completing the 10-mile loop past Monhegan Bluffs lighthouse and the Overlook. It’s an explorer’s paradise, and it's easy to see why: forty percent of the island is set aside for conservation. We were there when the great fire destroyed the Old Harbor Inn. This is a highlights from this year Rolex Big Boat Series onboard ASTRA the Farr 400. As well as racing on the boat I alsoI take care of all of the rigging. This year the conditions were marginal conditions with a wind range of 5-12 knots for most of the races with puffs peaking at 22knots. Our boat loves the breeze as we get up and plane downwind. This year we got thrown in ORC Division A. The fleet consisted of Merlin the famous Santa Cruz 70, Zeus the Infinity 52 (Turbo 52 footer with DSS Foils), Halawa an Andrews 56, and Bodacious + the 1D 48.

The fantastic Lorient-La Base was once again buzzing with excitement for the Défi Azimut. Now in its 15th year, the event brings together 12 pairs of skippers on their Imoca foiling 60 footers for what was to be another intense, festive and friendly week. Ray Davies of Emirates Team New Zealand recently made a vibrant stop in Naples, Italy, ahead of the upcoming Louis Vuitton 38th America’s Cup, and was left in awe: of both the city and its sailing conditions. “This is Naples. It’s unreal!” said Davies. “From what I’ve seen in just two days, it’s absolutely sensational.” Having competed in Naples during the America’s Cup World Series events in 2012 and 2013, Davies returns with fresh eyes, now envisioning the AC75s racing across the iconic Bay of Naples. Thomas de Dinechin's mast broke during the 56th edition of La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec in September 2025. De Dinechin was sailing aboard the boat, Almond for Pure Océan, when the dismasting occurred. From roll-out at dawn to dock-in at sunset, here is a full day at the Cagliari Base lived through the team’s eyes. The fleet leaves the dock for the sailing session while design team and shore team monitor every detail, from onboard systems to radio communications. The conditions for the day were similar to Tuesday but with a forecast of strong southerly winds arriving mid-afternoon, so expectations were for one or two races. After a timing error from New Moon, Otto made the best of the start of Race 3 and led uop the first neat and down the run. However, they picked the inshore gate mark while New Moon rounded the offshore gate into the slowly shifting breeze. New Moon took advantage and took the lead to win from Otto with Enez C'las II a solid third. Week 6–8 of the Mini Globe Race 2025 brings a mix of paradise, emotions, and new beginnings. After thousands of miles across the Indian Ocean, skippers reach the stunning Cocos-Keeling Islands — white sands, turquoise waters, and a brief taste of heaven before the challenge continues. But even in paradise, homesickness creeps in… and sometimes a new haircut means a fresh start!
