A great alternative to expensive AIS transponders with their own displays. We are using our ship's 12v PC for navigation to display our electronic charts in OpenCPN (a free, open-source and very well designed software!) and looking at AIS targets right on the chart around our own position is a great way to go! We searched the internet for an inexpensive AIS transponder that would do the job and are very happy with the ONWAKS-200A black box with SART .. at barely more than the cost of just a receiver, it does the job. We ordered on Amazon and the seller (manufacturer) was very responsive to our emails about shipping address. Package was tracked and arrived in less than one week. The installation went without hiccups (wish all marine gear installed that easy!) following the instructions and CD included. Will report later about performances after some testing.. Off the north coast of Borneo, between Labuan and Kota Kinabalu is Tiga Island, best know as Survivor Island as the first of these TV shows was filmed here a long time ago. Other than 2 small resorts (we did not visit), the island and tiny islets nearby are parts of Sabah Parks. We first explored uninhabited Pulau Kalampanan Besar, a sandy islet, then Pulau Burong, nicknamed Snake Island, a very rocky islet even smaller. We then hiked, on a little maintained trail, from Pagong-Pagong beach to the Volcanic Mud pools on Tiga Island proper. Filmed in September 2018.

So today its race 5 in the Medway Yacht Club Single Handed race series, It was arranged at the last minute the day before. Whilst we've been sharing our adventure on Facebook the past week or so, we realised that we haven't properly introduced ourselves yet! So here we are to put that right. We talk about who we are and where we're from (anyone heard of a little town in Shropshire called Oswestry??). We share our reasons WHY we decided to give everything up, buy a sailboat and sail off into the sunset to go and explore Northern Europe (and beyond!) We've had some pretty compelling reasons why we should do it such as illnesses and losses. We decided to trade in living to work for working to live instead. We share why we're travelling on a sailboat and not any other way (you don't want to miss Scrappy's introduction in this bit!). Having your dog onboard a yacht is a great way to travel with them. Find out who and what inspired us. Why we LOVE living aboard our floating home, having our dog onboard with us and our thoughts on if we made the right decision or not to sell everything and sail away! There are so many reasons why we decided to rebel against normality. From having to face a fatal brain tumour in the family to becoming a teacher with depression and anxiety to having mental health issues whilst working for the emergency services and being diagnosed with severe PTSD. Instead of continuing a life of having to deal with all that, we decided to become a sailing couple and go sailing Northern Europe and live life on board a yacht. This is our story of why we sold up and sailed away. The mental health issues haven't stopped but given the choice of travelling and sailing with PTSD or attempting to deal with it on land with everything else that goes along with it, you can see why we chose to sail away! I don't think mental health issues are discussed enough in our society. Sharing them is half the battle. It's not like having a broken leg that everyone can see. Instead, you face a battle with yourself in your head every waking moment that other people just can't comprehend. There are so many people in the emergency services that suffer but just don't get the help they need. From the ambulance service to the fire service to the Police. They see things every day that build up over time and without proper help to support them, it can cause long-term damaging PTSD which affects everyday lives in so many ways. This trip is our attempt to help ourselves and get out of the rat race so that we can begin to heal. The small community of Elfin Cove is built on boardwalks and the big happening of the day is when a seaplane arrives. It's a neat town and we enjoy our time waiting for weather. Next stop is Hoonah, one of the biggest Native American communities in Alaska and we begin the day going through a pass with strong currents and fog. We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter, January 2016, and started sailing south along the coast of Europe. Ahoy, Mag Bay or Bahia Magdalena, as the Mexicans call it, is a truly amazing place. It's almost undeveloped and looks pretty much like it did a long time ago. There is only one city and the rest is pure nature. Perfect for us to find a spot which allows us to enjoy nature and watersports at the same time. So we dropped the hook right next to a huge sandbar and pumped up our kites. We also met a few other cruiser and shared this magic spot with them. One of the them was Tyler Bradt, and the stories he told us were absolutely taking our breath. Not only that he just finished his 5 year circumnavigation or holds the world record for kayaking down a waterfall, a huge waterfall, no he is actually very good company as well and we had a nice kite session together..
