Guests on board this week - Mike and Kristy. Xanthe met these two at a music festival 4 years ago. We were camping neighbours for the week; then as chance would have it, we became actual neighbours when they moved to the same suburb as us in Sydney. We pretty much lived in each other's pockets before abandoning them for our boat adventure so it was quite the treat having them onboard for a couple of weeks of adventuring over Christmas and New Year. ...If only it turned out as smooth and problem free as we had hoped. A few disasters along the way made it an interesting trip to Dominica. We had heard a lot about this island and it all sounded a bit to mystical to be true. Living aboard and travelling in a 34ft yacht and in a motorhome with four kids. We get to the fantastic Bay of Islands and endure a bout of rain before Christmas. Then we get some sunshine and some up close shark action. We are a family of six who are taking some time out of normal life to travel. We’ve pulled the kids from school and are home schooling while on the road and the water. We spend time aboard our 34ft sailing boat in NZ and have bought a camper in Europe so as to tour the other side of the world. We’re keeping our memories on video here and the kids write narration and play guitars so we have music to use in the videos.

We made an easy day sail from Green Turtle Cay over to a beautiful island called Manjack. We were invited to join a group of people who were feeding a stingray in the water. We later found out that Manjack Cay is actually a popular destination where people can come and feed the semi tame stingrays and sharks. It was a really fun experience. Later that day we wanted to have some fun in the dinghy and get some awesome drone footage of Randall speeding up and down the beach. We were having great fun until Kenzie accidentally crashed the drone into a tree branch causing the drone to fall to the ground. Upon retrieving the drone we found that the arm holding the gimbaled camera broke making the drone impossible to use. It was a very sad day for Kenzie, so we didn't film anything else that day. In this episode we sail for 11 hours in the Aegean Sea. We leave Emborios on the South eastern coast of Chios and head over to Pythagorio on the island of Samos. A 60 mile crossing. We had a nice steady wind and decent sea state and was running almost all the way. A great day sailing. Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

Hello Friends, On this episode we head to the boat to test fit the enclosure and make sure all the measurements line up. After getting the stove set down in the brackets and seeing how she swings we head back ashore and get to work on preparing the bulkheads and start the laminating process. After drilling out the holes for the brackets I installed countersunk "T-Nuts" on both of the bulkheads. This will give me the strength of a through bolt without having an exposed nut on the other side of the bulkhead. In the chance that I should ever find myself capsized in the southern ocean I want to make sure the oven stays put until the boat rights itself. Everything I build on my boat I build with the knowledge that one day I will be sailing in the Southern Ocean and I want to make sure every project I do is as strong and secure as possible. I used white formica for the surfaces and DAP Weldwood contact cement to adhere it. With the help of my wife Camille and Mr. Steady the hound we got the enclosure all screwed together and ready for more laminating. Thanks for watching! We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, fifteen months after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream. We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it.
