In this episode, we set sail from Borneo on an incredible passage toward Belitung Island, Indonesia — a place so unique it’s been recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark. As we approach the coast, we’re greeted by Belitung’s dramatic granite rocks rising from turquoise waters, creating one of the most stunning seascapes we’ve ever seen. We spend a few magical days exploring the island, wandering between sculpted boulders and white-sand beaches that feel untouched by time. But the calm doesn’t last for long — on our next leg, the weather turns. We find ourselves sailing through sudden tropical squalls, dodging rain and lightning while crossing one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Once safely in Malaysia, we check in and prepare to leave our boat for a while — because our next stop is Singapore! From the tranquility of the sea to the vibrant pulse of the city, we can’t wait to dive into Singapore’s fascinating culture, explore its mix of tradition and modernity, and, of course, sample its incredible food. Join us on this journey across Southeast Asia — from wild anchorages and stormy crossings to the bright lights and rich stories of Singapore. 🌏 In This Episode: Sailing from Borneo to Belitung, a UNESCO Global Geopark Exploring Belitung’s iconic granite rock formations Facing tropical squalls and heavy shipping traffic Checking into Malaysia by boat Traveling to Singapore to explore culture, food, and city life Music in this video deserves a Thanks to : " Word we Will Remember" by Josh Woodward. The transformation begins! After months of mental anguish (see our earlier vides ;-), welding, and prep work, I finally suit up and sandblast the hull of our 80-foot steel schooner Alaskan Gypsy. As a first timer, I did the job in 8hrs because the sandblast pot was apparently clogged unbeknownst to me . . Anyhow- This is the day it all changes - from rust and corrosion to clean white metal and the first coat of zinc primer. Ignorance is bliss and I was on cloud 9 breathing paint fumes with my dad late into the night. If you want to see some of the mental anguish and gymnastics that led us to this day check out this endless monologue on the matter. I dare you. https://youtu.be/SP6bf04TepU?si=My0stRFdz269JIiF In this video: • Cobbling together a second half to the paint and blast shelter • Full sandblast of the lower hull (not recorded cause it was crazy) • Applying the first coat of PPG zinc primer in the wrong way. • Lessons learned about pressure, grit, and flash-rust. Shipyard life at its finest - loud, dirty, and deeply satisfying. ⸻ 📑 Chapters 00:00 Setting up more Blast Shelter 01:00 Preparing the Equipment 02:45 Sandblastering Gypsy into a new life 04:30 The Hull Turns Silver 06:00 Rolling on Zinc Primer 08:30 End-of-Day Reflections ⸻ #AlaskanGypsy #BoatRestoration #SteelBoat #SailboatRefit #ShipyardLife #Sandblasting #BoatDIY #HullRepair #ZincPrimer

In this episode, I’m sharing what this week was about. And yeah... I finally removed the old adhesive — step by step, trying different methods along the way) I started with mechanical cleaning using sandpaper. It worked, but it created a lot of dust, and the glue would clog the sandpaper after just a minute. I also tried a heat gun and several types of solvents. In the end, the best method turned out to be a combination of gently heating the thick layers — just enough to soften the glue without overheating the hull — and then using a xylene-based solvent. It’s important to use the right gloves for this kind of work: latex ones dissolve almost instantly, and nitrile ones survive maybe ten minutes longer. So make sure to choose gloves made from a material that’s resistant to your solvent. I’m sharing this for anyone who might face the same issue — especially those restoring old Winga hulls, since this type of adhesive was often used on them. ♥︎ If you feel like supporting my project, you can do it through PayPal https://paypal.me/mishushat?country.x=GE&locale.x=en_US Thank you from the bottom of my heart, I will mention you in my next video ♥︎ Patreon https://www.patreon.com/mishushat_masha Your Name on my Sailboat😊 And also exclusive behind-the-scenes clips My Instagram https://www.instagram.com/mishushatt/ Hugs, Mishushat

On a remote island in the Pacific, we helped the village chief build his traditional sailing canoe — a story that connects to a secret cave hidden deep in limestone cliffs 🪨⛵ On Panasia Island, far from the rest of the world, the village chief is hand-crafting a traditional sailing canoe the same way it’s been done for generations. In this episode, workshop manager Dan takes us through the final checks before infusing the Dazcat 1500 hull, one of the most crucial stages of the composite build process. You’ll see how every detail is carefully inspected before the resin starts to flow: Checking for air leaks to ensure a perfect vacuum seal Fusing the mould sections together for a seamless, strong, watertight structure Explaining each layer of the layup, including core materials, reinforcement fabrics, peel ply, flow mesh, and resin feed lines And finally, the moment of truth, as the resin is infused smoothly through the laminate This behind-the-scenes look shows the precision and teamwork that go into every Dazcat build. It’s where engineering, experience, and craftsmanship combine to create lightweight, high-performance multihulls built to last. In this new series of The Rogue Rigger I take you along on our campaign to go to the 5o5 World Championships in Hayling Island, England. The worlds start in July of 2026 so we have just a year and a half to go. Follow Mike and I on our journey to get to the world championships, from boat upgrades, practice days, regattas, debriefs and some shenanigans along the way. In this episode we take you onboard our 505 for a training session out of the Alameda Community Sailing Center on a beautiful October day. We got our hands on some new tech to try out on the boat, a Vakaros Atlas 2, Cyclops Marine Nano Load Cell and a new GoPro 13 with GPS. So now that we have this tech what do we do with it? Well you upload all the video and data onto Njord Analytics which enables you to sync up the data with the video so you can do some in depth training debriefs. This video is my first attempt at using the program so bear with me while I figure out the best way to share it with my viewers and get the info I need to sail faster. Good times!

The orginal post had some sound issues. They are now fixed. Listeners get a firsthand account of what it’s like to deal with this challenge—how boaters coordinate with marina staff, handle rigging, and secure the mast for safe travel. For those planning their own journeys up the Hudson River or through the Champlain or Erie Canal system, this episode provides valuable perspective and practical tips. Beyond the technical side, Bela and Mike reflect on the journey itself. Sailing from Georgia all the way north has already provided them with countless stories, but entering Catskill represents a turning point. It’s a reminder that cruising isn’t just about open-water sailing; it’s also about adapting to inland waterways, marinas, and infrastructure. The camaraderie between sailors, the quirks of small-town stops, and the satisfaction of tackling each obstacle together all shine through in this conversation. For sailing enthusiasts, especially those curious about the Hudson River, Catskill marinas, mast stepping and unstepping, or cruising toward Lake Champlain, this episode is a must-listen. Bela and Mike’s humor and storytelling make the technical aspects approachable, while their real-world experiences highlight the rewards and challenges of long-distance cruising on the East Coast. Whether you’re planning your own trip up the Hudson, dreaming of exploring Lake Champlain by sailboat, or just love hearing about the realities of life aboard a Hunter 44 Deck Salon, you’ll find both inspiration and practical knowledge here. Key Topics Covered in This Episode: Why sailors must take down their mast before entering the Champlain Canal. The role of Hop-O-Nose Marina in Catskill, NY, for mast services. Insights into bridge clearances and challenges of inland waterways. Tips for preparing your sailboat and working with marina crews. Reflections on the journey from Georgia to Vermont aboard a Hunter 44. Humor, camaraderie, and lessons learned along the Hudson River. Join Bela and Mike as they share another chapter in their adventure sailing and cruising the East Coast. Their blend of technical insight, storytelling, and humor makes this episode not just informative but thoroughly entertaining. We then take advantage of the unusually calm conditions to visit the very outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef at Patches No.1, a reef near the bottom of No.10 Ribbon Reef, where the diving is unlike anything we've seen before.

Support our BIG REFIT and help us keep our boat afloat: www.red-seas.com/refit We were surrounded by humpback whales as we sailed south through the islands of Tonga, from Niuatoputapu to Vava'u. We lifted anchor and set sail for a couple of days to reach our destination but as soon as we left the pass, we were surrounded by whales in every direction! These beautiful creatures were swimming alongside us, and breaching everywhere we looked. What an incredible experience! When we arrive in Vava'u, we get straight to work with an upgrade and repair to our watermaker - we've been struggling with issues for months as we sail between some of the most remote islands in the South Pacific....have we finally fixed it?? We're just trying to keep Indioko floating until we arrive in New Zealand later this year, where we have a massive refit planned. In this episode 238 we continue our 800 mile passage to Australia from New Cal. The weather calms down after blowing like stink during the first part of the passage. We fly our spinnaker, catch up on some boat jobs and repair a broken drive belt on the engine. Also we have a very close encounter with a curious bird before arriving in Australia. The Annapolis Boat Show is over, but the real work begins! At sunrise, I head back to the docks to help with the massive teardown — floating docks are being dismantled, crews are casting off lines, and nearly 100 boats start departing in a well-orchestrated bit of organized chaos. I’m helping move the Island Spirit 525e hull #3, the same model as my new catamaran (hull #5) that I’ll be getting in January. It’s a great behind-the-scenes look at what happens after the crowds go home. Meanwhile, Laura is back on board with her two boys — but with the move running longer than expected, I didn’t get the chance to say goodbye in person. She recorded a touching farewell message that I’ve included at the end of the video. ⛵️ Don’t miss the organized chaos, the teamwork, and a glimpse into what it takes to wrap up the world’s biggest in-water sailboat show! 📍 Filmed at the Annapolis Boat Show 🚤 Boat featured: Island Spirit 525e (Hull #3) 💬 Leave a comment — have you ever seen a boat show teardown like this?
