Welcome to NauticEd. In this video, Grant Headifen (Founder + Global Director of Education) shares the history of NauticEd and why the company was created in 2008: to build real competence for boaters—not just a certificate. NauticEd was born from running a fractional boat sharing company operating 30–40ft sailboats, where competence mattered: safer families, better decision-making, and fewer costly marina mistakes. That’s when we defined competence as a simple, practical framework: Theory knowledge (rules, navigation, right-of-way) Practical skills (on-water training with an instructor) Experience (real-world conditions that build judgment) Today, NauticEd delivers boating education through multimedia online courses and a global instructor network, growing from one course to 34 online courses and instructors worldwide. LIKE, SUBSCRIBE and COMMENT Also WATCH - Triple redundant steering - https://youtu.be/6RO5p0KgXD8 Is it possible that the Portofino 52 is the "BEST CATAMARAN IN THE WORLD" relative to the features that are included? Is Portofino RAISING THE BAR in the standards of the yacht construction industry? We share FIFTY UNIQUE and AMAZING features of the Portofino 52! Our dream boat — a Leopard 50 catamaran — was destroyed in a fire. What came next changed everything. Instead of buying another production catamaran, we wrote a brutally honest list of what a real long-term liveaboard cruising boat actually needs, based on decades of offshore sailing, expedition experience, and full-time life aboard. And we discovered something confronting: 👉 That boat didn’t exist. So we did something most people never do. We designed and built it from scratch. In partnership with the engineering-driven team at Portofino Catamarans, we created the Portofino 52 — an aluminium, expedition-grade, high-performance cruising catamaran designed around safety, redundancy, serviceability, and real offshore living, not marketing brochures. In this video, we walk through every major feature of the Portofino 52 — including innovations that are completely unique to Portofino, and others that no production catamaran offers all at once. ⚓ Key Features Covered in This Video • Aluminium expedition construction • Hydraulically controlled lifting centerboards with kick-up safety • Transom doors for instant sea access and major quality-of-life gains • Continuous corrosion & stray-current monitoring with live alarms • Silent exhaust system with remarkable noise reduction • Dedicated dive room with blow-drying for wet gear • Lithium battery fire isolation chamber • Triple-redundant steering — big-ship logic without big-ship cost • Automatic fuel polishing system • Shallow draft, true beachability & storm protection • Watertight bulkheads, buoyancy voids & extreme system redundancy • Full standing-height engine rooms (no yacht yoga) • Dual helm stations including full inside control • Highly efficient DC power generation & air-conditioning • Built-in workshop, crane lifting points & engine removal hatches Individually clever — together, these features radically reduce risk. The Big Question: Is the Portofino 52 raising the bar for the marine industry? And does any other cruising catamaran truly compare? Let us know what you think in the comments — agree, disagree, or challenge us. ⸻ 👣 About Us We’re the Barefoot Doctors — medical doctors and lifelong sailors living full-time aboard a performance expedition catamaran. Life really is better barefoot. What makes a Privilège Catamaran the gold standard for luxury blue-water cruising? In this video, we explore the "No Compromise" philosophy that has defined Privilège Marine for over 40 years. From the iconic central pod to bespoke interiors, discover why serious sailors choose Privilège for global circumnavigation. As the Official Authorized Partner for Privilège Marine, The Multihull Company (TMC) invites you to go behind the scenes of the French shipyard in Les Sables-d'Olonne. Whether you are looking at the Signature 510, the Signature 580, or the flagship Signature 650, every Privilège is a masterpiece of maritime "haute couture." 🌟 What Makes the Privilège Brand Unique? The Iconic Central Pod: A signature architectural feature that adds immense structural rigidity, limits bow diving, and creates the most spacious owner’s suite in the catamaran world. Custom Craftsmanship: Unlike mass-production builders, Privilège allows owners to tailor layouts, finishes, and technical systems to their specific lifestyle. Vacuum-Infusion Construction: Every hull and bulkhead is infused with closed-cell foam for an optimal strength-to-weight ratio and superior sound insulation (the "Quiet Ride"). Ocean-Tested Safety: Founded by Vendée Globe legend Philippe Jeantot, every boat is built to handle the rigors of the North Atlantic with ease. Exceptional Resale Value: Due to limited production numbers and obsessive build quality, a Privilège remains a premier asset in the brokerage market. 🔗 Explore the Privilège Range with TMC: Full Privilège Inventory https://www.multihullcompany.com/brand/privilege-catamarans/ The "Signature Series" Comparison: https://www.multihullcompany.com/model/privilege-signature-510/ https://www.multihullcompany.com/model/privilege-signature-580/ https://www.multihullcompany.com/model/privilege-signature-650/ Request a Custom Build Consultation: https://www.multihullcompany.com/contact/ Read the "Choice of a Lifetime" Story: https://www.multihullcompany.com/stories/why-i-chose-privilege/ 📱 Connect With Our Experts: The Multihull Company is a global leader in multihull brokerage. We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! Trapped by Wind and Rocks: A Reefing Gone Wrong Off Vancouver Island: https://www.practical-sailor.com/safety-seamanship/trapped-by-wind-and-rocks-a-reefing-gone-wrong-off-vancouver-island Choosing a sailboat keel isn’t just about performance numbers or design theory. It’s about how you sail, where you sail, and honestly… who you are as a sailor. In this video, we break down the major sailboat keel types and match them to real-world sailing personalities. From deep fin keels built for speed and pointing ability, to modified fin keels that balance performance and forgiveness, to full keels prized for tracking, comfort, and tradition, each keel design comes with clear strengths, compromises, and a distinct feel underway. Rather than arguing which keel is “best,” we focus on which keel makes sense for your priorities. Do you like sailing fast and trimming constantly? Do you value predictability, stability, and a smooth motion offshore? Do you want access to shallow anchorages without giving up too much windward ability? Your answers matter more than internet opinions. We cover: • Deep fin keels and why racers and performance-oriented sailors love them • Modified fin keels, skegs, and why they’ve become the default for many cruisers • Full keels, tracking, comfort, and why they still have devoted fans • The real tradeoffs between speed, control, draft, and handling • How keel choice quietly shapes your entire sailing experience If you’re shopping for a boat, planning a refit, or just trying to understand why different boats feel so different on the water, this video will help you think about keels in a more practical, human way. Because the right keel isn’t the one that wins arguments. It’s the one that fits how you actually sail. SAILING ILLUSTRATED #901 (Fri 16 Jan 2026) — The Fremantle Doctor claimed its first "patient" on Thursday when Los Gallos (ESP) suffered serious damage during the windy, rough practice race. Similar conditions are expected for racing on Saturday and Sunday in front of a sold-out "stadium" seating 15,000 spectators. We'll have the latest when we go live, as usual, on Friday at 1300 Pacific / 2100 UTC on Facebook and YouTube, or watch a replay on demand. The Yandoo team of Micah Lane, Fang Warren and Lewis Brake grabbed the lead shortly after the start and despite a strong challenge from the Shaw and Partners Financial Services team over the concluding stages of the race led all the way to take out Race 1 of the 2025-26 Australian 18ft skiff Championship on Sydney Harbour today. Strong winds earlier in the day forced race officials to alter the race schedule of two short course races and elected to sail one full length race over the South-East course. It was a decision which produced an excellent race in very poor conditions. Rain, poor visibility and fluctuating wind strengths throughout the race challenged the fleet and there were some very good performances by a number of teams, but the 2023-24 Australian and Giltinan champion team of Lane, Warren and Brake were superb and have set the benchmark for the remainder of the regatta, which concludes on Monday. At the of the long SE course, Yandoo crossed the finish line 40s ahead of Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Keagan York, Matt Stenta and Tom Anderson), with a fast-finishing Balmain (Henry Larkings, Tom Grimes and Lachlan Pryor) a further 1m39s back in third place. GC Sails, representing the Brisbane 18 footers SC, won the start and was always within the top four placings throughout the entire race. Skippered by Scott Cunningham, GC Sails finished in fourth place just ahead of Fisher & Paykel (Brett Van Munster), Lazarus Capital Partners (Tom Cunich), Smeg (Ash Rooklyn), Brisbane 18 Footers (Josh Sloman), Rag & Famish Hotel (Ben Crafoord) and The Oak Double Bay-4Pines (Hugo Stoner). Yandoo took the lead soon after the start and led y 10s from Shaw and Partners at the weather mark off Shark Island then extended it to 30s after the long spinnaker run across the harbour to Robertson Point. There was a great battle behind the two leaders with little between Balmain, GC Sails, Brisbane 18 Footers, Lazarus, Smeg, Fisher & Paykel and Big Foot Bags and Covers (Dave Hayter, Qld). Yandoo again extended her lead, to 40s, at Clark Island before the fleet’s next downwind leg to the mark off Chowder Bay. The spinnaker run tested all the crews as the wind dropped and the rain and visibility became worse. Over the next three legs of the course, two windward legs and a spinnaker run between Chowder Bay, Rose Bay and Taylors Bay produced more fluctuating conditions. The breeze dropped as the fleet worked in to Rose Bay Mark and Yandoo increased her lead to 1m20s but Shaw and Partners dragged that back to just 15s at Taylors Bay after electing to run on the western side of Shark Island under spinnaker when Yandoo’s went to the east. The Shaw and Partners team tried desperately to grab the lead from Yandoo on the final spinnaker run but trailed by 5s as the pair headed to the finish. Yandoo eased away over the final work to the finish for her 40s victory. After leaving Australia we fly to India and land in Chennai. We spend some time exploring Chennai and checking out local tourist spots. A wander through Pondi Bazaar gives us a taste of the city’s energy and some superb Indian meals. It’s good to be back. Next we pick up our hire car, the one that’ll take us across India. Once we make our way out of Chennai we head south to Pondicherry, a beautiful area known for its striking buildings and complex past. From there we drive up into the hills to Erode Hill Station where we find the most incredible place to stay. It’s been created from old government buildings, cinemas, bridges and other unexpected structures. No two rooms are the same and the architecture is wonderfully higgledy piggledy. A brilliant place to spend a few days. Thanks for watching. Until next time Wendy and Magnus —— VALKRY BBQ, SMOKER, ROTISSERIE If you’d like to get your own VALKRY BBQ, you can use our link below. The headline feature is simple and bold. There is no helm station on the main deck. That decision completely changes the feel of the yacht, because the entire main deck becomes open, social living space.
This is the continuation of the extensive work we had carried out in Anacortes Washington in Sept Oct 2025. It also covers some work we had done on the boat in Comox BC with camera upgrades.

In depth video view of my Welsford Scraps "Lil' FREDA". Departing from JW's plan, I built her to split apart and 'nest' inside the cockpit of GRACE my welsford Tread Lightly. No need to stow her in the cockpit or on foredeck etc when taking Grace to a different location. She assembles in less than 5 minutes and even assembled is a breeze to lift single handed and carry some disatnce! She easily fits in thje back of my Subaru wagon too. Scraps design is sooooo slippery thru the water and such a lovely little vessell to row without effort. Small, so care is needed, but she's a winner!

With safety and ease of handling in mind, we walk through the hardware and layout that make this system work: a hard point at the foot of the mast with a triple block, a deck organizer, a coach-roof winch to port, a double clutch, and a cam cleat. Our single reef line for the mainsail runs aft to the clutch alongside the main halyard, while the control line for the hydraulic boom vang is led back to a dedicated cam cleat. Combined with our already-installed roller furler for the genoa, this setup allows us to manage sail shape, reefing, and sail handling entirely from the cockpit. No trips forward, no scrambling on deck—just controlled, deliberate sail handling where it’s safest. We’re well aware that single-line reefing comes with compromises in sail trim, but for our sailing style and conditions, the trade-off is worth it. The goal is simple: reduce risk, simplify operations, and make the boat easier to handle short-handed. If you’re curious about practical, old-school boats adapted for modern sailing realities, this one’s for you. Fair winds, The Sailing Good Old Boats Crew

Leaving the Whitsundays is never easy — especially when this is where our sailing life began. Before heading south, we take one last look at the places that feel like home. 🌊⛵ We’re mid-passage and making the most of seasonal northerly winds to head south down the east Australian coast. But first, we rewind and revisit some of our favourite Whitsundays anchorages — places that shaped our family and our life at sea. This is where we lived until Charlie was 12 months old. Where we sold almost everything we owned and chose to live full-time on a sailboat. So coming back here always feels familiar… like returning home :) Thanks so much for watching — don’t forget to like, subscribe, and come sailing with us ❤️ Fair winds, Sam, Cait & Charlie Sailing with the Jameses --------------------------------- 🎉 WANT TO KEEP VIDEOS COMING? Assuming the worse being a ship of some large mass collision could see nothing except a massive old growth log skidding aft. Folded steel hull is designed for surviving all most anything. There was barely a paint smudge. Thinking back to my first sailboat Alberg 30 fibreglass was unthinkable.

In this episode of liveaboard sailing, we experience one of the most intense storms we’ve ever faced while living aboard our sailboat. In our last video, we made the call to pull anchor and sail directly into a storm, pushing hard to reach the marina before an even more severe weather system arrived. As full-time sailors preparing to sail around the world, we knew this decision could make all the difference. What we didn’t expect was just how extreme the next day would become. Less than 24 hours later, the marina was slammed by a severe storm cell with winds clocked at 75 knots and massive hail measuring 15 centimetres in diameter. Boats surged violently against dock lines, visibility dropped to zero, and the sound of hail and wind was deafening and relentless. This was no ordinary storm — this was extreme weather that tested every liveaboard sailor, every cleat, and every line. Once the storm finally passed, reality set in. This episode takes you through the post-storm damage assessment, as we inspect our sailboat, check rigging, lines, and surrounding vessels, and process what just happened. The adrenaline fades, the exhaustion hits, and the raw emotion of surviving a major storm — becomes impossible to hide. But this video is also about something bigger than damage and destruction. It’s about the sailing community coming together. Neighbours checking on neighbours. Sailors helping sailors. Sharing tools, lines, advice, and support. This is one of the most powerful parts of the liveaboard sailing lifestyle — the unspoken bond that forms when boats and people go through extreme conditions together. If you’re a sailboat owner, beginner sailor, or dreaming of travelling the world by sailboat, this episode shows the real side of boat life that rarely makes it to social media. Storm preparation, marina life, recovery after severe weather, and the emotional highs and lows of living aboard a sailboat are all part of the journey. This is real sailing. This is resilience. And this is why the sailing community feels like family. Each experience we have and each new sailing skill learnt just keeps bringing us closer to taking off to sail around the world in our Beneteau Oceanis 430 @SailingAstridTheWombat living our boat life dream. We bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 in October 2023 with zero sailing experience but the belief that we can do this. We have filmed our journey from looking for boats, buying the boat and downsizing our house so we can liveaboard and all the messy wonderful life stuff in between. Join us now as we start to get our boat prepared for liveaboard life. As new sailors we want to share all of our learnings and keep it real in our videos. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Canon R50 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Back up is a Canon 200d. Action scenes and small blogging is done with an Insta 360 Ace2. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. I also use an Insta 360 and have two drones, a Magic mini2 and Mavic pro Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over several days. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have limited communications with the outside World. Can you afford to go sailing in the Med? Most likely, I found our costs way better than expected! In this video, I break down our actual costs of 1 year living and cruising on our fully electric catamaran, covering thousands of miles through Italy, Croatia, and Greece. Starting on the hard in just outside Venice, down through the length of Croatia, across the Adriatic on our first overnight crossings, and finally into Greece, where we spent the winter aboard in Preveza Marina. This isn’t a theoretical budget or a "perfect year", these are the real numbers tracked through the year. We cover: -Mooring and marina fees (only 18 paid nights all year) -Cruising fees -Food, groceries, eating and coffee dates -Starlink internet (connected 365 days, even offshore) -Insurance, -Breakdown cover -Maintenance -Water and Electricity -The final total This was for two people and two dogs travelling thousands of miles through three countries for a full year in some of the most beautiful cruising grounds in Europe. ----------------------------------- We live on a 1976 Catalac 9M that we converted to a fully electric boat. All our energy comes from our solar panels and we use it for propulsion, cooking and even making water! Our boat is 9m long by 4.2m wide and weighs 5 tons. We have 3200W of solar, two 6kW ePropulsion outboards, and a 14.4kWh lifepo4 battery pack.
This video isn’t about catamarans or monohulls. It’s about the first decision that quietly traps beginners before they ever gain real experience: commitment without reversibility. Early commitment feels productive. It feels like progress. But when you lock in emotionally, financially, or socially before you truly understand what you want, changing course becomes expensive. In this video, I break down: • Why early commitment creates false confidence • How emotional lock-in changes your thinking • Why resale friction matters more than beginners realize • And why reversible decisions beat “being right” early If you disagree, that’s a good thing. Explain why commitment worked for you and where you think I’m wrong. This channel isn’t about telling you what to buy. It’s about helping you avoid mistakes that don’t feel like mistakes until later. #SailingLife #FirstBoat #Liveaboard #SailingBeginners #BoatBuying #SailboatLife #Minimalism #DecisionMaking #LearningCurve
Once again we rung in the New Year in Trinidad, this time not on our yacht, but at the nearby island of Gasparee where fireworks light up the night sky. From there it was straight back to boat work, getting our sailing catamaran ready for 2026. It's a year that has already brought great change, with new crew, and promises our biggest adventures yet!
