**** FIXED AUDIO AND VIDEO ******* Not sure why but YouTube corrupted our last video upload. This is the same video re-encoded fixing the playback. ************************************** One lightning strike left us with no power, no engines, and 820 miles to get back for repairs. After being struck by lightning while anchored at the remote island of Pulau Panjang in Indonesia, everything changed in an instant. With no electrical systems, no engines, no pumps, no cooking, and no refrigeration, we were forced to manually lift the anchor and begin an 820-nautical-mile journey back to Phuket. Sailing when the weather allowed, we hand-steered day and night through storms, strong currents, and sheer exhaustion. Near the end of the journey, we were towed across the Malacca Strait before finally reaching Port Dickson—our first chance to get No Regrets II running again. This is Part 1 of our journey. In Part 2, failed engine repairs, a narrowly dodged cyclone that destroyed Admiral Marina in Port Dickson, electrical system checks in Penang, and finally a haul-out in Phuket as we face the full extent of the damage. WHO ARE WE? Hey there! We’re Chris and Jo, an ordinary Aussie couple living our extraordinary dream aboard our Seawind 1260 since January 2019 and now we continue from 2024 aboard our new 1370! Our adventure began with an unforgettable journey down the east coast of Australia, followed by a sail to the stunning New Caledonia. In 2020, we continued our exploration further north, and by 2021 and 2022, we circumnavigated Australia, discovering breathtaking locations along the way. Having previously owned fishing and water-skiing boats, our passion for sailing deepened after crewing in South Australia, leading us to make the leap into full-time living at sea. We hope to inspire you, just as we were inspired by other YouTube channels, to chase your dreams and explore the wonders of this beautiful world. Join us on our journey, and don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more sailing adventures! #seawind1370 #seawindcats #sailing #sailingboat #sailingyacht #yacht #yachting #yachtinglifestyle #cruisinglife #boatlaunch
Episode 251 We set off from Batemans Bay bound for Eden… until a sudden weather change forces us to divert into Bermagui. What starts as a detour turns into an unexpected highlight: we meet some huge bull rays right off the wharf, explore the town and cycle out into the country where we stumble into a tiny historic village complete with an cheese factory. Proof once again that the best cruising moments happen when plans fall apart. PART 1 Boat Fires Part 1: Electrical Fires, Causes & Fire Extinguishers Explained Fire is one of the most dangerous emergencies you can face on a boat — and the number one cause of boat fires is electrical failure. In confined spaces, surrounded by fuel and batteries, a small electrical fault can turn catastrophic in minutes. In Part 1 of this series, we focus on why boat fires happen, the types of fires you can encounter, and the critical role electrical systems play in onboard fire risk. In this video, you’ll learn: Why boat fires are far more dangerous than fires on land The main causes of boat fires, with a focus on electrical faults The different classes of fire found on boats (A, B, C, and K/F) Which fire extinguishers belong on a boat — and their limitations Why electrical fires usually start with heat, not sparks How bad electrical joints, undersized wiring, and poor crimps start fires The importance of proper fuse sizing and why fuses protect wires, not appliances The real fire risks of large battery banks, lithium systems, and inverters How to reduce risk with proper battery protection, cable security, and terminal protection Most electrical fires start small — hidden behind panels, under bunks, or inside lockers — and escalate fast. Understanding how and why they start is your first line of defence. ⚠️ Disclaimer This video is for educational purposes only. Always follow manufacturer instructions, marine standards, and professional guidance when working on electrical systems. We’re currently living aboard Alaskan Gypsy in Wrangell, Alaska, and after a few months out of the shipyard, life is starting to shift again....in a good way. It's as if we've entered a completely new chapter! This video is a real, unscripted update on where we’ve been, how winter boat life has been going, and what opportunities are beginning to open up as we settle into life afloat. From riding out storms and learning the boat, to slowing down after the shipyard and rethinking what sustainable life and work can look like in remote Alaska. We talk about burnout, finances, community connections, and some exciting possibilities - including small-scale freight, remote logistics, project work, and serving off-grid communities in Southeast Alaska. This channel is about real boat life, off-grid living, family, and building a meaningful, sustainable life in wild places. If you’re curious where this path leads , or you live remotely in Southeast, Alaska and this resonates, we’d love to connect. Support our refit and find out our boat plans: www.red-seas.com/refit TIPJAR: www.tpjr.us/redseas We are now on day 7 of our passage from Tonga to New Zealand and things are starting to heat up. We had incredibly calm conditions when we set off from Minerva Reef but finally the winds are starting to fill in. While the waves are still pretty small, we can make the most of the time and sew together our NZ courtesy flag but it's not long before the squalls start to roll in and we see our first equipment failure on the boat. We are praying that things don't get as bad as the forecast implies because this part of the ocean is known for being pretty rough, but fingers crossed we can hold on long enough to all arrive in one piece. We are still trying to get ready for our Electric Motor Installation. So many parts are needed for the wiring, cooling and control of the system that it is hard to keep track of everything. We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. Two ongoing jobs are preparing for our electric motor installation and creating a cockpit enclosure for our wheelhouse. Exercise, jump rope, jumping jacks, life jackets, Magma grill, dancing, comments. Hello subscribers and viewers. We’re so glad you have visited us here on Sailing Intermission. Your interactions through viewing, commenting and asking questions truly keep us afloat. Love those comments and some are featured in this episode. Some are funny, others informative and several are creative and poetic. Steve is in the dark as to which ones Karen has selected which makes it extra fun. Safety is always paramount on Isabella. Our inflatable life jackets are of an unknown age. They typically last five to eight years; time to test and replace. We inflate one of the inflatables while we went ahead and bought two new jackets. What can we say...they were having a great sale at West Marine and just couldn’t resist. They are Coast Guard approved, 35 pound buoyancy with a harness and were half priced. There is some exercise going on. We bought the new inflatable life jackets and tested an older one. Always nice to exercise safety practices and Karen does a small workout. Keeping things hot! The burner for our Magma grill finally became available after being out of stock. The old one rusted out and actually broke in half! Steve replaces the burner and we celebrate by having a gourmet meal of high quality hot dogs. Yummy. Having the Magma back in action is such a thrill we had to grill again, this time with some delicious rib eye steaks. Precooked a bit below and then grilled to perfection on deck. Huge hugs and kisses to all our subscribers, we can’t emphasize enough how much we appreciate y’all. Thanks to everyone who stopped to view our channel and we would love for you to become subscribers. Additional Links: Hey y’all, our Sony video camera broke and you can help us replace it. In this episode we continue to investigate the osmosis issue on the boat which has caused blisters all over the hull. We speak extensively with Andy Miller from @boatworkstoday about the issue, who gives some amazing advice on the topic. SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. They found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are now sailing through Asia and planning to cross the Indian Ocean!! Many older sailboats still run wire halyards, and converting to modern rope is absolutely doable—but there’s a common mistake that destroys new line fast: old wire sheaves get scored over time and can chew through rope in weeks. In this video, we explain the right way to upgrade: inspect/replace the masthead sheaves first, then choose the correct halyard—whether that’s Dyneema for high performance or a simpler double braid for cruising. We also cover why wire-to-rope splices are no longer typical, and why modern rope halyards are often easier to manage and repair than wire. BILGE FAILURE at LUPERÓN. Logic dictated a standard supply run to Puerto Plata, but the sub-surface reality was a mission-critical threat to a neighbor's vessel. THE STAKES: Massive tropical downpours and a "Wall of Trash" turned the anchorage into a sinking hazard; without immediate intervention, a buddy's boat was heading for the bottom of the bay. On SV Agua Azul, we don't have the luxury of a tow. If the BILGE SYSTEM fails, the logic flow stops. This is the forensic truth of LIVEABOARD SURVIVAL. . ROOT CAUSE: A failed float switch and a disconnected power source during a relentless storm. REDNECK ENGINEERING: Performed an emergency electrical bypass miles from a chandlery using A STRAY DECK NUT AND RAW BATTERY TERMINALS to restore the system. This was a sub-surface necessity to keep the harbor operational and a neighbor afloat. . THREAT SHIFT: The moment I realized the dinghy weight was compromising the mast and the bilge was at capacity. LOGIC PIVOT: Describe the specific transition from standard procedure into survival logic due to external factors. Watch as the mission enters a hard limit. . THE BUTT PUCKER RATING: 3.5/5 🍑 CONTEXT: Coming back from a failed $300 gear hunt only to find a neighbor’s boat sitting low in a "Wall of Trash" with the pumps silent. . 💬 VETERAN & SAILOR DEBRIEF: WOULD YOU HAVE JUMPED ON A STRANGER'S BOAT TO SAVE IT? A couple of explorers, modern-day documentarians, and cultivators of curiosity. We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us. Things We're Most Curious About... GETTING OFF-GRID Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. So self-reliance and sustainable living are a must. We've learned heaps about renewable energy, managing waste, creating safe drinking water and foraging for food. We carefully manage our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so. TALKING TO STRANGERS People are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen. It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection. Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment. Which is why these are our most treasured experiences. Setting off into the world with curiosity as our guide and nature as our compass. We talk to strangers and accept hospitality without fear or reservations. Both giving and receiving. ALTERNATIVE LIVING These are people who are doing things differently. Forgoing the mainstream, seeking freedom and living on the margins. Mitte Mai. Der See ruft. Wir baden und ganz Schweden staunen. Ich dachte, schöner kann es nicht werden, doch dann kommt der Juli...... @SailingNavita #sailing #sailingfamily #travel #travelfamily #boatlife #bordercollie #cats #motherhood

A powerful ocean current. And a harbor full of legends. 🌊⛵ Join our sailing family as we continue our journey around the world, embracing the raw beauty and real challenges of life at sea. This week, we cast off from Durban, South Africa before sunrise—only to be met by the Agulhas Current, delivering a rougher ride than we ever anticipated. Our sailboat carries us into East London, where an unexpected and inspiring scene awaits: the Mini Globe Racers filling the harbor, each with their own story of grit and determination. While we wait for the right weather window to head south, boat life doesn’t slow down. Projects pile up, sails need repairing, and we lend a hand to help get the racers back on the water. From wild ocean conditions to quiet moments in the marina, this family sailing vlog captures the highs, the hardships, and the unforgettable connections that make this journey so special. Adventure, teamwork, and life under sail—this is cruising as it really is. ⚓ Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and sail along with us as the adventure continues. We are a suburban blended family that has raised our 3 older children and now want to travel the world. After planning and saving for the past 6 years, we are now embracing our dream of sailing around the world on our Leopard 45 sailing catamaran. Follow our journey as we Circumnavigate the Globe in 3-4 years on a budget of $4,800/month (food, communication, fuel, insurance, transportation, mooring/marina & fun). We left the USA in October 2023 and plan to visit 26 countries on 5 different continents all while worldschooling a budding teen in our off grid tiny house. 🏆 Looking for boating spreadsheets, inside info or wanna help keep the dream alive? Quarken has been on my radar for a while, mainly because of how they approach design and usability. The 35GT blends a clean, modern look with a hull that’s clearly built for real conditions, offering a solid mix of performance, efficiency, and usable deck space. THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS Mention code DBL for discounts on Marine Mold Construction https://ms-marine.eu/ When the chance came up to spend time testing the Quarken 35GT, I wanted to focus on how it actually feels on the water. With a strong outboard setup and a well-balanced layout, this was a good opportunity to see how the boat performs beyond specs and renderings. The team behind the brand are clearly thinking long-term. After seeing what’s coming next and what’s still on the drawing board, it’s obvious Quarken is positioning itself as a serious option in this segment. If you’re comparing boats from established American brands or looking at European alternatives, this is one worth putting side by side. For the size and price point, the 35GT makes a strong case. But this wasn’t always our life. In 2020, we found Yabá abandoned, sinking, and on the verge of being lost forever. We had no experience in boatbuilding, only a wild dream and the determination to make it happen. We worked relentlessly, learning from the best local shipwrights and pouring everything we had into this rebuild. It took four years of sweat, setbacks, and unwavering commitment, but today, Yabá is more than just a boat, she’s our home, our biggest adventure, and the proof that crazy dreams *can* come true. Now, we’re sailing into the unknown, exploring remote islands, embracing the unpredictable and sharing the highs, the lows, and everything in between. In this video, I take you behind the scenes of the Long Beach Marine Bureau Boat Auction and show you exactly how it works—from inspection to bidding to what happens after you win. This is a true insider’s guide based on real experience, not theory. I break down what boats actually show up, how to inspect them in under an hour, common mistakes that cost buyers thousands, and how to avoid turning a “cheap boat” into an expensive regret. ⛵ What You’ll Learn in This Video: What the Long Beach Boat Auction really is (and when it happens) The types of boats you can expect to find (SUPs, kayaks, sailboats, cruisers & more) • How to inspect auction boats quickly and effectively • The biggest mistakes first-time buyers make • Smart bidding strategies to avoid auction fever • Hidden costs like tax liens, transport, and repairs • What paperwork you must get before bidding • Why auction boats can’t return to Long Beach marinas for 6 months • Whether buying a boat at auction is actually worth it ⚠️ Important Notes: Boats are sold AS-IS, with no guarantees. Some are diamonds in the rough… others are money pits. The difference comes down to preparation, inspection, and discipline—which is exactly what this video is designed to help with. If you’re: On a tight budget Handy with tools Willing to learn Looking for a project boat or first sailboat 👉 This auction can be a great opportunity—if you do it right. 📍 Auction Details (Example Covered in Video): Location: Alamitos Bay Marina, Long Beach, CA Viewing: 8:00 AM Bidding: 9:00 AM Payment: Cash, credit card, or cashier’s check 🔔 What’s Coming Next: In an upcoming video, I’ll do a deep dive on how to survey a used sailboat yourself, whether you’re buying at auction or privately—so make sure you’re subscribed. Got questions about the Long Beach Boat Auction? Drop them in the comments—I read and respond as much as possible. And if you attend an auction and score a boat, tag me—I’d love to see what you end up with. Our goal is to complete a circumnavigation, or at least half of one, and we recently transitioned to a performance catamaran, an Outremer 52, AWEN. We worked with Outremer in France to launch our boat project and start our journey as sailing vagabonds. While it’s not a race or speed test, we are doing another Bluewater crossing this year and we are excited to see AWEN exercise her legs once more. Join us as we share what we’re learning and attempt this new life of travel and adventure on the ocean. Please be patient with us as we continue to improve our YouTube vlogging skills. Holly and Stephane are formerly from the San Francisco Bay Area but have a home in Tahoe. Our 'someday' plan was to sell our belongings, buy a boat, and, with reckless abandon, sail away to visit distant lands, which we did starting in 2020.
