As part of my preparation for my solo sail around the world I went to a professional Sea Survival Training. The most intense moment? Being locked inside a car, dropped into the water and flipped 180 degrees – total disorientation, heart pounding, learning to stay calm and escape. Later we faced a full storm simulation in darkness with wind, thunder and waves. We finished in open water testing life jackets and group survival techniques. This day was far more than theory – it was about facing fear, trusting yourself and preparing for the unexpected. One huge step closer to my solo circumnavigation. Against the grain. I start by wetting my stubble with warm water. Then I take the wet shaving brush to the shaving soap tub. I load the brush by swirling the brush around the shaving soap tub. I then take the loaded brush to my face and paint the soap onto my skin. I then gradually add more water to the soap by dipping the tips in water and scrubbing the soap on my face to build a nice lather. Once my lather is built I take the razor and perform my three pass shave. Once my face is cleanly shaved, I rinse with cold water. A lighter forecast, a manageable window… and a straightforward run across the Indian Ocean. But out here, it’s not always the wind that defines a passage. Short period swell, confused seas, and constant motion turned this into a relentless few days onboard. The kind of passage that doesn’t look dramatic… but slowly wears you down, hour by hour. From hobby horsing over waves to being thrown sideways, reefing down to stay in control, and troubleshooting ongoing boat issues along the way — this is what offshore sailing really looks like. No filters. No shortcuts. Just real life at sea.
