Bulwarks! They give slightly more freeboard to help keep ocean waves off the deck, and more practically, they give you something to walk on when heeled over really far while bluewater cruising. Herby builds the supports for the bulwarks with Totalboat Silica Thickener and Polyester Resin and then covers over the joint with 1708 fiberglass. This is the initial tabbing which will be further reinforced during later stages of the build. Right now, the bulwarks are just going to support the tent that I’m building to cover the boat and let me work regardless of the weather. Brigitta was completely surprised, of course, even though sailing around the world fit much better into her professional life than mine. But in the following six months, Brigitta has made amazing progress and is just as excited about our big adventure as I am. We have now been traveling for a total of four and a half years. One adventure follows another, and we enjoy every day anew. In search of freedom and independence, a thirst for adventure and a love of nature, we – Brigitta and Hannes – are sailing around the world together. In this episode, we make it to Taormina and drop anchor for the night. While we’re asleep, the weather takes an unexpected turn — this time for the better — so we decide to take advantage of the window and motor sail to Rochella through the Straits of Messina. We end up leaving about an hour later than planned, which means there’s a good chance we’ll arrive after dark. Still, it’s the only window all week where the wind and current aren’t working against each other, so we go for it. The crossing starts out calm, with the wind at around 35–37° apparent at 7-10 Knots , and as we turn the corner north, the swell builds a bit and the wind shifts to a perfect 60° apparent — not too strong, but ideal for a smooth sail. 🏍️Hayabusa, Poop, Basil, Dill, Dolphin🐬, Busa not P@#sy I strapped my hands across his engines. Riding on the Hayabusa is hot! The sound of the 194 HP engine, the gentle vibrations, the power is intoxicating. Karen loves the galley floor, a little too much, but nice. It's always great to see dolphins swimming free. Boat maintenance is ever present. Trying to keep the deck pristine is a workout. Bird poop tends to stain the deck. Maybe that's where "poop deck" came from. Our dill and basil are really growing. Karen is jumping for joy and exercise. Why do people abandon boats? Some just leave them to rot others store them in a slip to rot. Sad. Join us as we finish one of the biggest jobs aboard — refinishing all the aluminum on our sailboat, including the mast, boom, crossbeam, spreaders, and davits. We’re using a professional metal conditioning power tool and a unique product called Nyalic — a clear coating not often seen in the yachting world. Most aluminum masts are painted or anodized, but Nyalic offers a long-lasting, UV-resistant finish that’s easier to apply and far less expensive than paint. Things didn’t go as planned: on the day we were set to finish the mast, Shawn had a serious pressure washer accident, sending us to the hospital for emergency surgery to prevent infection and compartment syndrome. The next day, Geri returned to the boat to finish the job alone — a tough day’s work ending just as the sun went down.
