After six weeks on the hard stand replacing our old 39 hp Volvo, Sailing NV is finally back in the water! In this episode, we take our freshly refitted ex-Vendée Globe racer out for her first engine sea trial — testing our brand-new Nanni N4.65 and fine-tuning the propeller pitch on our J-Prop. We share what we’ve learned about finding the perfect balance between revs, speed, and fuel efficiency, and explain what happens when your prop pitch is too high or too low. After years of coaxing an ageing diesel, hearing this new engine hum is a dream come true — and the freedom to finally move again feels incredible. Stay with us as we continue exploring the wild coasts of Borneo, testing and learning in real-world conditions, and getting back to what we love most: sailing, family, and life on the water. ⚓ Watch till the end for our speed results — and a glimpse of some well-earned family time on the beach. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When tuning (matching) the propeller to the engine, there are several factors that come into play. Let’s start with the engine sizing — the engine can be: - Undersized - Properly sized - Oversized Undersized Engine: The propeller pitch must allow the engine to reach its full RPM. Otherwise, in difficult conditions, the engine might not be able to reach its torque curve — meaning it won’t provide enough thrust, which could result in low speed or even no thrust at all in strong wind or rough seas. Properly Sized Engine: In this case, you can choose a propeller pitch that causes the engine, at full throttle, to lose about 5–10% of its maximum RPM. This allows for a higher cruising speed compared to letting it reach full RPM. The key point is that the engine must still be able to reach its torque curve in challenging conditions to avoid dangerous situations. Oversized Engine: With an oversized engine, there’s more flexibility in propeller pitch without the risks mentioned above. However, if the pitch is too large, even if the engine’s performance isn’t affected, the boat may reach a high speed even at idle. General Notes: There are, of course, many cases in between. Using common sense — such as keeping the throttle 100–200 RPM below the point where the engine starts to smoke — is always a good idea. Malheureusement ou heureusement nous ne pouvons pas rentrer dedans pour éviter la dégradation du site par les touristes .Celui ci reste incroyable . Je profite d'un mouillage à proximité du volcan pour pêcher quelques poissons pour le repas du soir et écouter le cri des Puffins dans les montagnes . Petite navigation jusqu'au port de Punta Delgada .On loue une voiture pour 4 jours pour visiter l'ile de São Miguel . In this episode we sail out of Lunenburg Bay and head up into Mahone Bay, anchoring in Scotch Cove beside Graves Island Provincial Park. Along the way we had a little chat with local sailors as they sail by. Most of the day the wind was light, then picked up as we tacked our way to our anchorage. On the sail back to Lunenburg we had a good breeze from the north east with no tacking necessary! A great sailing day but not as fast because Eleutheros needs a good cleaning done under her!

And the first task was simple: welding the cockpit. But, as is routine in our boat building project, what should have been simple turned into a nightmare. We discovered that the cockpit had completely wrong drainage angles. The result? We had to make the painful decision to CUT OUT and redo a structure that was already FULLY WELDED! 🤯 We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life. We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. Wir verlassen Preveza nordwärts in Richtung Lakka. Nach einer Nacht gehts weiter in einem für uns neuen Hafen in Korfu/Kerkira. Am nächsten Morgen gehts schon weiter nach Erikousa mit Umwegen über den Norden von Korfu. Wir möchten eigentlich aus privaten Gründen recht schnell nach Licata aber wir werden immer wieder von Gewittern ausgebremst...aber eine Pause zwischendurch ist auch nicht schlecht
