Sailing vessel Tapatya. as we return to Tapatya and Alanouwoly, we make an essential repair and a couple of minor gear upgrades, before final preparations and heading out to enjoy the splendours of Sardinia. This is the story of SV Tapatya, a self-built, Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of our adventures as I live aboard, sail and strive to find out just what such a self-built, low-budget vessel is capable of. These videos take a lot of time and effort to make, in what is already a time-intensive project. Your support in watching, subscribing and sharing these videos is very much appreciated. Originally designed to blast around the world non-stop and solo every fours years, the IMOCA scene and its racing calendar has exploded to the point that there is almost too much choice for teams. But given that the Vendée Globe is stil the ultimate race for this class it is no surprise to see that events like the Transat Cafe L’Or have attracted a great deal of interest from teams who look to find more ways to develop and refine these outrageously powerful machines. But this year something else was bubbling beneath. New designs for the next Vendée cycle are starting to appear and along with them, new names on the leaderboard. So, in this episode we take a look at how this race played out for the IMOCA fleet as they wrestled with the tactics and what the top dogs thought about it once they had reached the other side. Join us as we sail from Cartagena, Colombia to Linton Bay, Panama! What started as an exciting passage quickly turned intense when we were caught in a massive lightening storm that lasted all night. With flashes surrounding us and thunder vibrating through us. We made the call to change course in hopes of clearing the storm. We got a visit from two sweet little birds who decided to move in. One even had a sleepover. Linton bay was a nice calm place to relax with a game and get some groceries.

In this video, we’ll go through the step-by-step process of calculating how much weight or cargo needs to be shifted to achieve the desired trim — in this case, to bring the ship to an even keel. You’ll learn how to determine the distance between cargo holds using their LCGs, find the MTC and LCF from the hydrostatic table, adjust for dock water density, calculate the change of trim, compute the weight to be shifted, and finally, determine the ship’s final drafts. #cargocalculations #draftsurvey #stability #hydrodynamics #maritime #seafarer #seaman #bsmt #maritimestudents #seamanship #trim https://youtu.be/P14Xbnm17C8
What upgrades are actually worth the money on an older sailboat… and which ones you should avoid? In this episode of The Sailing Doodles Podcast, I break down the most valuable upgrades I’ve done across all the boats I’ve owned — from my classic CT-56 to the newer catamarans and charter boats we’ve sailed. I cover which improvements truly make your boat safer, easier to sail, and more enjoyable… and which “fancy” upgrades usually end up being a waste of money. If you’re shopping for an older cruising boat or planning a refit, this episode will save you thousands. Topics Covered Why buying a boat already upgraded is often cheaper Rigging, sails, and critical safety upgrades Ground tackle & anchoring systems worth investing in Autopilots, instruments & navigation upgrades Electrical systems, lithium, solar & charging Refrigeration: why it’s usually a later priority Comfort upgrades: electric winches, watermakers & more What to skip… and what will absolutely transform your cruising About the Channel I’m Bobby from Sailing Doodles. I sail, travel, and document the adventure while running my YouTube channels from around the world — from the Caribbean and the Bahamas to the Mediterranean and beyond.
