Der Kurs eignet sich für jede Marke, ob Volvo-Penta, Yanmar, Perkins, Sole, Vetus, Beta, Caterpillar oder Cummins. Im Kurs wirst du unter anderem lernen, dass Diesel aus der Industrie und Landwirtschaft häufig von diversen Firmen eingekauft werden, marinisiert werden und dann in unterschiedlichen Farben verkauft werden, wobei die Motorbasis identisch ist. Mal ist der Ölfilter auf der einen Seite, mal auf der anderen, aber das spielt keine Rolle. Alle Dieselmotoren funktionieren nach demselben Prinzip. Ob du nun ein Segelboot mit einem kleinen 3-Zylinder oder ein Motorboot mit gleich 2 großen Sechszylindern hast, spielt keine Rolle, die Wartungsarbeiten sind größtenteils deckungsgleich. Im Bootsdiesel-Kurs legen wir Wert darauf, dass du die Funktionsweise eines Dieselmotors und dessen Komponenten von Grund auf verstehst, statt nur irgendwelche Checklisten auswendig zu lernen. Denn dann bist du in der Lage, an jedem beliebigen Bootsmotor die Wartung durchzuführen und Fehler zu beheben. In jedem Bootsdiesel findet die Kraftstoffverbrennung im Brennraum statt, hier haben wir einen oder mehrere Kolben, die sich auf und ab bewegen und so die Kurbelwelle drehen. Jeder Bootsdiesel benötigt somit Kraftstoff, den er verbrennt. Jeder Bootsdiesel wird außerdem mit Öl geschmiert, das regelmäßig gewechselt werden muss. Auch im Getriebe oder Saildrive gibt es Öl. Desweiteren werden alle Bootsmotoren mit Wasser gekühlt, wobei zweikreisgekühlte Motoren nicht direkt durch Seewasser gekühlt werden, sondern durch ein Kühlmittel, das wiederum durch Seewasser gekühlt wird. Wir besprechen beide Arten der Kühlung in unserem Kurs, und auch exotische Kühlungen wie die Kielkühlung. Nicht alles ist identisch. Ältere Bootsdiesel haben ein mechanisches Einspritzsystem, während neuere Motoren manchmal komplexere Einspritzsysteme haben – vielleicht hast du ja schonmal von Common-Rail-Motoren gehört. Auch hier wieder: Du lernst beide Einspritzsysteme kennen, so bist du nicht nur für den Motor deines jetzigen Bootes ideal vorbereitet, sondern auch, falls du mal ein anderes Boot kaufst. Und natürlich lernst du auch alle Komponenten kennen, die ein Motor haben kann, aber nicht muss, zum Beispiel einen Turbolader oder einen Ladeluftkühler. Wenn das jetzt alles noch etwas kompliziert klingt, keine Sorge: Der Kurs ist geeignet für Anfängerinnen und Anfänger ohne Vorwissen, aber genauso für diejenigen, die schon an Motoren gearbeitet haben. We’re leaving paradise… 🌴⛵ Wayag, Raja Ampat has been nothing short of breathtaking, but reality finally catches up with us. We’re running low on food, the wind isn’t playing along, and it’s time to change plans. Instead of staying put, we decide to point the bow toward Ambon in search of wind, supplies, and a little more fun. Our final night in Wayag almost ends in disaster. A series of small mistakes snowball as we lose phone battery, daylight, and depth awareness — a reminder of how quickly things can go wrong at sea. What started as a simple outing turns into a tense scramble to get back to the boat safely. Thankfully, we make it back just in time, shaken but wiser, and begin preparing for the next leg of our journey. This episode is a reminder that adventure isn’t just turquoise water and perfect anchorages — it’s decision-making, consequences, and learning when to move on. Solid-state lithium batteries have completely changed how we power ARGO. In this episode, we upgrade our sailboat’s battery system to safer, lighter, longer-lasting lithium – and the difference is immediate. You can research sailboat power systems endlessly – but some lessons only land once you’re living with them. From day one on ARGO, we’ve battled battery and power issues. Backwards wiring drained our original setup, replacements didn’t solve the problem, and after a few days of rain we were still watching our power disappear. When it became clear we didn’t have enough capacity to comfortably head off on more remote adventures, something had to change. After plenty of procrastination, spreadsheets, squinting at the bank balance and late-night research, the promise of doubling our usable power finally tipped the scales. In this episode, we take the plunge and upgrade to solid-state Lithium batteries – and the difference is already huge. Why we chose this setup: – Safest lithium batteries available – Around 10,000 cycles (at 80–90% depth of discharge) – Victron Energy compliant – Massive weight saving – 18kg each vs 60kg each for our old AGMs Jason takes ARGO down to the Gold Coast for installation (a 7-hour ordeal), then sneaks home via a cheeky short-cut through Canaipa Passage, threading through for a much deeper water journey. Was it expensive? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Knowing we now have the power to sail further, stay longer, and live aboard without constantly worrying about batteries makes this upgrade one of the biggest confidence boosts we’ve had yet. We left Moments in Time tucked safely in Fernandina Harbor Marina and drove back to Maryland to spend the holidays with family. When the celebrations wrapped up and we returned south, we traded Maryland’s biting low 30s chill for Florida’s welcoming warmth in the high 70s. Monica drove up from Jacksonville to spend the day with us, and together we wandered to the Amelia Island Lighthouse, taking in the sweeping views and the old oaks draped in Spanish moss like nature’s own lacework. From there, we headed to Fort Clinch, exploring its grounds and historic brick corridors before the rising temperatures—now in the 80s—pulled us toward the beach. We ended the afternoon combing the shoreline for shark’s teeth and other small treasures, the kind only the sea decides to share. As the sun slipped below the horizon, painting the sky in soft golds and purples, we made our way back to Moments in Time for the night. It was one of those rare, perfect days—a true moment in time. This is part 2 of a step-by-step build of a B&B Yacht Designs Spindrift 10 nesting dinghy, following the guidance from the build instructions. This video focuses on the gunwales, filleting, stitching removal and carbon fiber taping. She will be the tender to Flying Spur soon! I purchased the pre-cut "kit" to save some time, but the same results can be accomplished by purchasing the build instructions and cutting your own marine-grade plywood. This video is for those who are looking to build their own dinghy, and who wish to learn more about the process. This is the second project Brent and I worked on together, the previous being a 7' pram for Brent. I hope you enjoy, and I hope you take away some successes we had, as well as learning from some of the failures we encountered.

Our sons, Declan and Ivan, are about to embark on their own journey, flying out of Trinidad to crew a super yacht delivery from Rhode Island to Antigua, stepping into the next chapter of their lives and careers. We've been incredibly fortunate to live, work and sail alongside them for so long, more than lucky, really. And while we're sad to see them go, we're overwhelmingly proud of the young men they've become. Mantenimiento y puesta a punto real de un velero: mejoras en sistemas de agua, reparación de bomba de ducha y restauración de superficies a bordo. En este vídeo reviso varios trabajos realizados tras la temporada para mejorar fiabilidad y facilitar el mantenimiento futuro. Durante el último año he ido solucionando pequeñas averías y haciendo mejoras que, aunque no son graves, ayudan a entender mejor cómo funcionan los sistemas del barco y a detectar problemas antes de que aparezcan en navegación. – Instalación de filtrado para poder beber agua del depósito – Reparación de la bomba de ducha con un sistema más mantenible – Lijado y pulido de la encimera de cocina El mantenimiento preventivo no es solo conservar el barco: es conocer su comportamiento normal para poder anticipar fallos. En el próximo vídeo veremos el reglaje de válvulas del motor, una operación clave para la salud y rendimiento del motor diésel marino.
