CAPTAIN OFFSHORE SAILING COURSE BUNDLE - https://www.nauticed.org/bundle/view/captain?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=GBRQa1SmSAM LRSE - https://www.lrse.com Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) save lives. In this NauticEd safety episode, we break down exactly how a personal locator beacon works, why every offshore sailor and coastal cruiser should carry one, and how new AIS MOB and DSC-enabled PLBs tie into your VHF radio and chartplotter. We start with a real rescue story, then walk through 406 MHz PLB technology, registration and hex IDs, global satellite coverage, and how PLBs differ from classic EPIRBs. You’ll see how to wear and activate a PLB correctly, when it’s appropriate to use one (life-threatening emergencies only), and why combining 406 MHz + AIS PLB beacons (like the Rescue Link 450) gives you the fastest possible path to rescue. In this video you’ll learn: What a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) is and how 406 MHz satellite alerts reach rescue services How PLB registration, hex IDs, and databases help rescuers know who you are Where PLBs are used: offshore sailing, coastal cruising, hiking, fishing, camping How to carry, deploy the antenna, and activate a PLB safely The difference between PLBs, EPIRBs, AIS MOB beacons, and DSC-linked devices How AIS and DSC alerts show up on nearby vessels’ multifunction displays & VHF radios Why combo PLB + AIS units are ideal for coastal cruising and man overboard situations If you’re serious about boating safety, offshore passagemaking, or man overboard (MOB) preparedness, this PLB guide will help you choose and use the right beacon with confidence. 00:00 – Real PLB Rescue Story: Why Personal Locator Beacons Save Lives 00:24 – What Is a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB)? 00:34 – How PLBs Work: 406 MHz, Satellites & Registration Hex IDs 01:06 – Where PLBs Are Used: Boating, Hiking, Fishing & Camping 01:21 – How to Carry & Activate a PLB Safely 01:53 – When to Use a PLB: Life-Threatening Emergencies Only 02:04 – PLB vs EPIRB: Mini EPIRBs & 406 MHz Beacons 02:23 – AIS MOB Beacons: Personal Locator Beacons with AIS 03:00 – AIS & DSC Integration: MMSI, VHF Radios & Man Overboard Alerts 03:50 – Combo PLB + AIS: Rescue Link 450 for Coastal Cruising 04:24 – Why AIS PLBs Help Nearby Boats Rescue You Faster #sailboat #sailing

Part 148 of a series: Sailing Tampa Bay to Key West. Anchored at Cayo Costa, Ashley is able to practice naturism while sun tanning. More nature is observed when a manatee swims under our 2005 Odin 820 sailboat. This German, water ballast, shallow draft, trailer sailer allows us to anchor very close to the beach. Swimming, paddling and a beach walk showcase the beauty of this remote island.

As winter closes in on Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Arabella is almost ready to settle in for the season. With most of the harbor cleared out, it’s time for some of those quiet but satisfying projects that make cruising easier down the road. In this episode, Steve marks the anchor chains and rodes with red, white, and blue nylon tags, organizes the anchor locker for storage, and gives the boat a little extra attention after a busy season of sailing. Along the way, he reflects on what’s ahead—from off-season maintenance to winter adventures to plans for the spring journey down to the South Coast. Watch as Arabella transitions from adventure to upkeep, with plenty of practical boat life tips along the way—from DIY chain marking to locker organization and winter prep for liveaboards. 🔧 In This Episode: Preparing the anchor chain and rode for next season Cleaning and organizing the anchor locker Practical methods for marking chain lengths Troubleshooting condensation and winter sealing Reflections on a full year aboard and what’s next -------------------------- Episode #370 Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! When Semi-Custom is important to you, then you may get some value in looking at a Whitehaven. This company designs and builds motor yachts for people who have often had a few boats before, and they are very clear in what they wish to achieve with the next vessel. THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS Mention Code DBL for discounts on Marine Mould Construction - https://ms-marine.eu/ This is when a builder like Whitehaven comes in handy, as they have the skills and expertise to bring many of those semi-custom ideas to life. In this video, we explore the Whitehaven 6000 Flybridge and discover some of the custom ideas these owners put into practice. This is the same company that built the Harbour Classic yachts that I featured on the channel way back in the early days. They have some interesting designs and excellent engineering solutions like the shaft drive propulsion with a fully enclosed tender garage on this 6000 Flybridge. It's features like that which are hard to find on competing boats that you can go to Whitehaven with your requests and make them happen. 00:00 – Introduction 00:37 – Whitehaven 6000 Flybridge Layout: 3 Cabins & 2–3 Bathrooms 00:53 – Why Clients Choose Whitehaven Yachts 01:08 – What You’ll Discover in This Walkthrough 01:39 – Exterior Design & Features of the Whitehaven 6000 Flybridge 01:39 – Bow Area: Double Bow Rollers & Stainless Steel Setup 02:23 – Forward Lounge Area 02:54 – Safety Features of the Whitehaven 6000 03:23 – Starboard Side Walkthrough 04:24 – Flybridge Highlights & Semi-Custom Options 04:40 – Hydraulic Swim Platform & Tender Garage (Fits 3.5m Tender) 05:43 – Aft Deck: Extended Roof, Sun Protection & Lighting Options 06:30 – Port-Side Wing Station for Easy Maneuvering 07:42 – Flybridge: Commanding Views & Comfortable Driving Experience 08:28 – Helm Design & Storage Features 10:14 – Additional Docking Wing Station (Port Side) 11:43 – Starboard Wing Station, Stereo Controls & Social Seating 14:26 – Interior Tour & Customization Options 14:26 – Social Layout: Dining, Lounge & Outdoor BBQ Area 14:57 – Modern Galley Features & Design Details 16:23 – Unique Custom Additions on the Port Side 17:36 – L-Shaped Lounge with Drop-Down Roof TV 18:24 – Cabin Overview 18:24 – VIP Cabin Walkthrough 19:56 – Mid-Ship Cabin Overview 20:44 – Master Cabin Features 21:44 – Optional Ensuite Toilet & Shower in Master Cabin 23:15 – Engine Room & Tender Garage 23:15 – Engine Bay Overview 24:15 – Powered by Volvo D13 Engines 25:16 – Detailed Engine Bay Tour 26:32 – Tender Garage Operation & Storage Space 29:09 – Who Is the Whitehaven 6000 Flybridge Perfect For? 30:41 – Optional Engines, Shaft Drives & Performance Choices 31:12 – Final Thoughts: Why You Should Own the Whitehaven 6000 Flybridge I hope this video is of use to you! Learn more about why you a Marine Survey is important: https://catamaranguru.com/marine-survey-why-do-you-need-on A full survey and sea trial on the Catana OC50 Samurai, the proven performance catamaran that achieved line honours in the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (2024 ARC Rally). This behind the scenes look follows our team, the surveyor, and the buyers as they inspect the vessel on land and on the water, learn the handling characteristics of the OC50, and experience why this model has earned its reputation for speed, stability, and comfort. We begin at Loggerhead Marina for the initial inspection, followed by a detailed walkthrough of manoeuvring techniques, daggerboard use, throttle control, and close quarters handling. The buyers step behind the wheel for the first time, learning how quickly a performance catamaran responds and how easy it is to gain confidence with proper guidance. Keith and Matt provide practical instruction, safety tips, and real world examples of bridge etiquette, helm response, and best practices for new owners. The haul out reveals the underwater profile of the OC50, including the narrow bows, rudders behind the props, and performance focused hull shape. The surveyor conducts moisture testing, infrared thermography, and a full structural review. We discuss common findings, such as line damage to drive seals, the importance of clean running gear, and best maintenance habits for long term reliability. Once back on the water, the team heads out of Port Everglades for the offshore portion of the survey. The buyers experience the OC50 under sail, watch the mainsail drop cleanly into the bag, and see how quickly the Genoa deploys. Even in light conditions, the performance sails demonstrate how easily this boat can be operated, including by a short handed crew. This video is an excellent reference for anyone considering a catamaran purchase, preparing for a survey, or researching the Catana Ocean Class series. It highlights the real process, the importance of proper expectations, and the value of letting buyers feel the boat first hand. For anyone researching catamarans, preparing for a survey, or learning what to expect during a haul out and sea trial, this episode provides a clear look at the actual process and the practical reasons a survey is essential. 00:00 Survey day introduction 00:22 Marina briefing and survey overview 01:15 Manoeuvring lesson for new buyers 03:40 Daggerboard use for stability 05:10 Bridge etiquette and current rules 06:40 Haul out inspection 09:20 Surveyor findings and technical assessment 11:05 Underwater profile and performance features 13:10 Offshore sea trial 14:50 Sail handling demonstration 16:00 Final impressions Samurai (Samouraï) is a Catana Ocean Class 50, known for combining true performance with impressive liveaboard comfort. Narrow bows, balanced displacement, high performance sails, and a thoughtful interior layout make this model stand out among performance cruising catamarans. The ARC results speak for themselves, and the design continues to prove its capabilities under real conditions. I’m sailing the boat down the East Coast for the final time before hauling her out of the water and storing her on land while the Nauti Dogs prize competition finishes up! In this episode I make the run from Atlantic City to Cape May, then across the Delaware Bay and up the Chesapeake to Annapolis, and finally into Solomons, Maryland, where I haul the boat out of the water for storage. It’s a beautiful stretch of coastline with changing conditions, busy shipping lanes, calm anchorages, and some great solo sailing moments with the dogs. If you’ve been following along on this adventure, this is one of the last sails on this classic CT-56 before someone new gets the keys. 👉 Enter the Nauti Dogs Prize Competition here: https://raffall.com/398138/enter-raffle-to-win-sailing-doodles-sailboat-hosted-by-sailing-doodles 👉 Subscribe for the next sail on the new cat!

De Antonio D60.Defined by purity, linearity, and a sense of refined balance.High, vertical bulwarks rise straight from the waterline, while the deckhouse windows are shaded by an extended rooftop — a distinctive and functional signature. The sunbed on the top is easier to reach than it seems, and the entire deckhouse can be fully enclosed or completely opened — making this yacht perfect for every season.Beneath the sunpads lies a generous storage compartment for toys and tender, and just below, four powerful outboards. At the stern, the hydraulic platform lifts to form a boarding staircase or lowers to create a bathing terrace. Inside, a refined dinette with a folding table seats six comfortably, complemented by a TV visible from every sofa. And the galley? Hidden below deck — accessible by a dedicated staircase, separate from the one leading to the cabins.A thoughtful layout designed for privacy, comfort, and effortless life on board. @deantonioyachts @mauriziobulleri. #DeAntonioYachts #D60 #YachtDesign #WalkAroundElegance #LuxuryLifestyle #PowerAtSea

Tom Cunliffe joins us for a proper cup of tea and a wide-ranging conversation about boats, books, and why real seamanship still matters. A merchant seaman turned delivery skipper, Yachtmaster Examiner, columnist and broadcaster, Tom has spent a lifetime at sea—from engine-less beginnings on the Norfolk Broads to long ocean passages on traditional gaff craft and a Colin Archer to South America, the Caribbean and back. He shares the formative moments that shaped his philosophy: sailing without an engine, learning to think like a sailor (not a motor-boater with sails), and why how you recover from a mistake tells you more than whether you make one. We talk navigation then and now. Tom argues that modern electronics are brilliant—but can diminish us if we forget the craft. He explains why raster charts and analogue plotting still earn a place on an iPad, and how his AngelNav approach lets you keep navigating if GPS goes dark. Starlink, he says, has changed cruising beyond recognition—useful, yes, but it dilutes the old solitude that bred self-reliance. Tom also lifts the lid on the writing life: columns on both sides of the Atlantic, the decision to leave certain magazines over copyright, and the long road from textbooks and history to fiction. That leads to his new novel, Hurricane Force—a 1970s Caribbean sailing thriller with rave reviews (Alexander McCall Smith calls him “the Dick Francis of yachting thrillers”). We explore why he set it pre-GPS, how real people and places inspire composite characters, and why plotting a thriller sometimes needs an old roll of wallpaper more than a fancy app. Stories abound: a teenage initiation on a 25-foot gaff sloop with no engine; beating for days into current off Venezuela; sharing an anchorage (and a mishap) with Don Street; ship-handling lessons from the merchant service that still apply to tying up a 45-footer with two people and no drama. Throughout, Tom keeps circling one idea: seamanship is joyful competence—clear thinking, tidy lines, and the confidence to make landfall by the stars if you must. If you love traditional craft, bluewater problem-solving, or just a well-told sea story, this one’s for you. We cover: • Learning under canvas: why starting engine-free rewires your seamanship • The philosophy behind analogue-first navigation on digital tools • The romance and reality of long passages then vs. now • How Hurricane Force was born, shelved, and reborn—plus hints at the sequel • Practical ship-handling tips yacht owners forget (and examiners notice) Pour a brew, settle in, and let one of yachting’s great raconteurs remind you why we go to sea in the first place, and why the best safety gear lives between your ears. I’ve sailed long enough to know which boats don’t flinch offshore. In this video, I count down the 10 toughest bluewater sailboats ever built—overbuilt layups, bulletproof rigs, protected rudders, and sea-kindly hulls that bring you home when the weather turns ugly. 00:00 Intro 01:16 Rustler 36 02:17 Kraken 50 03:23 Contessa 32 04:25 Ingrid 38 05:25 Corbin 39 06:30 Trintella 44 07:32 Fisher 37 08:35 Najad 380 09:39 Able 44 10:40 Sceptre 41 11:39 Ending Copyright Disclaimer This video may include copyrighted material used under the “fair use” principle for educational and informational purposes. 🌊 3,5 Meter Wellen – klingt harmlos? 😅 Weit gefehlt!

FINALLY! What a relief to have both of our Volvo Penta D275 engines working after 15years idle and forgotten. This episode is another nitty gritty dive into the inner workings of our portside inboard. It feels surreal to tick such a massive milestone off the list, and it wouldn't have been possible without Brett's help!
