After a month away from the boat, we’re finally back — and diving straight into projects. This episode starts with Jeff flying back to Minnesota to reunite with the family for Christmas and help pack up our house as we prepare to sell it. From there, it’s back to the boat to reassemble our Gori folding props, splash back into the water, and get moving again. Most of this episode is spent building the scaffolding and structure for our new solar arch and mounting solar panels as we continue upgrading our electrical system for full-time liveaboard life. It’s one of those projects that’s probably fine… right? We also take some time to explore Fort Pierce and Riviera Beach, Florida, as we slowly make our way south and continue learning what it really takes to live aboard a sailing catamaran as a family. In 2026, Tortola serves as the main island in The BVI where private crewed charter yachts begin and end their charters. With limited flights into Tortola and over 25 daily flights into neighboring island, St Thomas, USVI, many ask can they start their charter in St Thomas? While this a common request, the current relationship between The USVI AND BVI is as Facebook would say "Complicated." There are some limited yachts that are currently able to legally pick up and drop off in The USVI and offer a BVI itinerary. These are VERY limited in number. But calm conditions don’t last long… As storms roll in, we find ourselves caught in the middle of a civil defence weather warning. Next Dimension is in exceptional condition, well maintained with low hours and light use. She is hull 54 in this popular Nordhavn 40 series. Next Dimension is a second generation (built by South Coast in China). The consumption entry document from when she was newly imported into the US (CBP-7501) will be handed to the buyer. The first 45 hulls were built by Pacific Seacraft in California. All Nordhavn 40s are born from the same tooling, but PAE, the parent company of Nordhavn, differentiates the two versions in this series as Mark I US made, and Mark II China built. This design has generous interior accommodations (saloon and galley on the entry level, raised pilothouse and two staterooms with one head on the lower level) and a seakindly ride through the water. Next Dimension was ordered with the optional fly bridge, which provides an excellent outdoor area above the pilothouse for taking command underway or relaxing when at rest. The saloon is spacious because it is pushed out on both sides, no wasted space filled with rarely used walking side decks. The entry level merges the saloon into the galley with a set of stairs up to the raised pilothouse or down to the accommodations deck. The owner stateroom is forward, there is a shared head and shower and the guest stateroom has two bunk berths. The engine room is surprisingly spacious, benefitting from the proprietary “maintenance strakes” in the hull mold that provides additional headroom on both sides of the main engine. Systems and equipment are selected and installed for reliability and service ease. The pilothouse is arranged for optimal operation with good sight lines and easy to reach controls. The flybridge adds a second command station and the tender is mounted on the boat deck, launched by the mast and boom. For stabilization, she has both paravane outriggers and active fin stabilizers. The Nordhavn 40 is a full displacement trawler that was designed and built to transit oceans. A sistership completed a 26-week circumnavigation in 2001 (with listing broker Jeff Merrill crewing a leg). The Nordhavn 40 design is the smallest passage maker built by PAE and boasts a 3,000 mile range. Most Nordhavn 40 owners are “owner operators” who enjoy the reliability of this design and savor time aboard, planning, traveling and resting at anchor. 🌍 Épisode 51 Entre barbecue, vent fort et galères de mouillage… la vraie vie en mer ⛵🔥🌧️ Nous sommes toujours à Mustique, et on en profite pour un petit moment convivial sur la plage. Les BBQ mis à disposition nous tendent les bras : on se prépare un bon festin face à la mer… mais comme souvent aux Caraïbes, un bon grain vient s’inviter à la fête 🌧️ Résultat : soirée écourtée et malheureusement, pas de pétanque cette fois-ci ! Le lendemain, nous levons l’ancre direction Baliceaux, la petite île au-dessus de Mustique. La navigation est bien plus sportive que prévu : plus de 20 nœuds de vent, une mer formée… ça bouge ! À l’arrivée, le mouillage ne nous inspire pas confiance. Et comme on le dit souvent en bateau : quand on ne le sent pas, on n’insiste pas. On décide donc de poursuivre directement jusqu’à Bequia. Une belle navigation au cours de laquelle Mathis prend la barre pour s’entraîner dans des conditions bien dynamiques 💪 Une vraie expérience ! Une fois à Bequia, place aux indispensables de la vie à bord : 🧺 lessive ⛽ plein de gasoil (au bidon, évidemment !) 🗑️ poubelles 📄 clearance de sortie On termine la journée par un petit bain bien mérité, l’occasion pour moi de vous montrer l’état de la coque et des hélices après 1 an et demi dans l’eau. Le lendemain, nouvelle étape : de Bequia à Sainte-Lucie. Nous tentons d’abord de mouiller à Marigot Bay, mais après trois essais d’ancrage sans succès… il faut se rendre à l’évidence. On reprend la mer direction Choc Bay, un mouillage que l’on connaît déjà. L’arrivée se fera de nuit… et oui, les galères de mouillage, ça fait aussi partie de la vie en catamaran. During our overnight passage, we discovered that our navigation lights weren’t working, so we began troubleshooting to figure out whether the bulb had failed or if the wiring had corroded. After running into a bigger issue than expected, we decided to pause the project until we can get the right parts. Thankfully, we had a much more exciting reason for coming to Moorea: swimming with the humpback whales. And what a welcome distraction it was!
