S#!% near HEAD-ON COLLISION sailing the worlds busiest shipping lane Today join us as we sail our live aboard catamaran through the Singapore strait, the narrowest part of the Malacca Strait and one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, for what was supposed to be an exciting day of sailing while racing an Outremer. However, it turned into a terrifying dodging of ships as the weather closed in and heavy storms reduced visibility. A squall ripped our sail and the heavy rain white out resulted in us narrowly escaping a collision with an oil tanker. More than 300 large container ships and oil tankers pass through this area everyday. In the Singapore strait these ships get squashed together by the bottleneck created with Singapore to the north and the Indonesian Islands to the south. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. #catamaransailing #leopard48catamaran #sailingadventures #LobsterTrap #LobsterPot After transiting the #DelawareBay, we turned the corner in the #AtlanticOcean, and made a quick overnight stop in #CapeMayNJ. We anchored in front of the Coast Guard Station - a small anchorage for only a few boats, however there was heavy pleasure boat traffic in the channel, as it was Fourth of July weekend. Cape May is a go-to beach resort and cottage area for NJ, but seems to be better explored from land, or from the bay side of the bridge. We left at daybreak the next morning to catch the best wind for our next 36 hour sail. #SAILINGTOMARTHASVINEYARD We had a good sail for these 36-hours albeit a bit rough. We had following seas, but they were in the 8-10’ range and a short dominant period. We sailed fast with the parasailor but by evening the wind was too strong for that sail through the night. So, we doused the parasailor and put up the main and genoa. Not as smooth sailing, and not as fast, but safe. Note when we had the parasailor, we saw up to 23 knots TWS and were making 10-11 knots SOG. Very fast. We #snaggedalobstertrap in our rudder during this trip, but were able to remove it AND save the lobster pot gear for the fisherman. By morning we lost wind velocity, speed, and direction. We were originally heading to Nantucket to make the trip east to west, Nantucket to Newport. But with the change in wind, we changed our destination to Martha’s Vineyard. This would dramatically change our overall trip plans since we’re now going west to east, Martha’s Vineyard to Nantucket. But that’s what sailing is all about. Welcome back to our channel, sailors! Today, we have a DIY project for you on replacing the air conditioner raw water pump on a sailboat. A faulty water pump can lead to poor cooling performance and even damage your system, so it's essential to keep it in tip-top shape. Here's how you can replace it yourself with just a few tools and some know-how. Projects like this are part of everyday boat life. The air conditioner water pump receives raw water that passes through a sea strainer. Hoever over time, small pieces of barnacles or debris can still make its way to your water pump causing it to leak. This type of malfunction is not covered by the pump warranty, so it is important to maintain your sea strainers clean and check them on a weekly basis. To remove the pump first, locate the water pump on your sailboat's air conditioning unit. It's usually found near the unit itself or within the engine room. Next, shut off the power to the air conditioner and disconnect any electrical connections to ensure your safety. Make sure you close the thru hull that feeds water to the pump before removing. Now, use a wrench or screwdriver to disconnect the water supply hose from the pump. Be prepared for some water to spill out, so have a towel or bucket handy. Next, remove the mounting bolts holding the pump in place using a screwdriver. Once removed, carefully take out the old pump from its location. This is a great opportunity to adjust your hoses to avoid kinks or pinches. Now, place the new water pump into position and secure it with the mounting bolts. If you are replacing a similar pump, your mounting holes should match which will make the job easier. Reconnect the water supply hose to the new pump and tighten it with your wrench or pliers. Finally, reconnect any electrical connections you had disconnected earlier. Once everything is securely in place, it's time to test your new water pump. It's important to choose the right kind of materials that will withstand the elements and provide durable protection. When installing canvas, make sure to use the right size framing and corrosion-resistant hardware for your specific design. For example, if you are going to install solar panels on your bimini frame, you may want to go to bigger stainless steel tubing on this Catalina 445 we went with 1.25” Stainless Steel to account for the additional weight of the solar panels and to stiffen the frame. Now, let's move on to electronics. When wiring your boat, safety is paramount. Start by creating a comprehensive electrical plan, labeling each wire, and using color-coded cables for easy identification. Ensure all connections are properly sealed to prevent water damage. When mounting electronics, consider their location for convenient access and protection from rough waters. As you can see, running wiring through a boat after construction is not an easy task and it is very time consuming. You have to open access points along the way to do your wire runs. So it is extremely important that you use the right gauge wire for the distance of the run and the use of the electronic. Cutting corners and using cheap thin wire, creates heat, adds resistance to the current flow and affects the life of your equipment. During installation, don't forget to follow manufacturer's instructions and consult a professional if needed. Properly grounding your electronics system is crucial for safety and optimal performance. Lastly, don't overlook regular maintenance. Make it a habit to inspect your canvas and electronics periodically for any signs of wear or malfunction. Clean any dirt or salt residue from the canvas and regularly test electronics to ensure they're working properly. Remember, a well-installed canvas and electronics system will not only enhance your boating experience but also ensure your safety on the water. Unfortunately although we know the dangers of pulling off the Malacca Strait to anchor, we didn't think we would get caught by the scam practiced by a few of the fisherman here. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Trails on either side of the canal are actively used for biking and hiking and they love to watch the boats transiting the canal! When we left Sassafras River, we were going to stay at Chesapeake City, but we were making good time and the #DelawareBay tide was in our favor, so we transited the canal and made it half way down the Delaware Bay to anchor in #CohanseyRiver for the night. There are not a lot of good places to stop once you enter the Delware Bay, so having the right plan is key. Cohansey was a beautiful, secluded marsh anchorage well protected from the winds. Strong tides but good holding. It’s a great place to lay over if you’re transiting the bay. Up the creek is Greenwich, NJ and a marina and restaurant called The Bait Box - a very local eatery and bar with indoor and outdoor seating, live music, and a local scene. Great menu and cocktails. A must stop if you layover in Cohansey River. 250 hours now on the Beta Marine 35 engine. It is time for some maintenance. In this episode, we change primary/secondary fuel filters, install a vacuum gauge on the primary fuel filter, replace the heat exchanger anode/zinc, inspect/replace the raw water pump impeller, and clean the raw water strainer. After maintenance is completed, we test run the engine and do a visual inspect for leaks and other issues. All good!

I make a DIY stand for my Simrad TP10 Tiller Pilot. This is designed to screw into the deck of my Drascombe Lugger, Lulu leaving a flush deck when not in use. The reason it's quite a fat stand is so that it reduces the forces on the hull under pressure. After almost 3 months away from Galene, we return to the boat yard in Corfu to commence work on a long list of maintenance and upgrade work. Feeling a little overwhelmed by the magnitude of tasks we've set ourselves, we decide to hold our noses and start with the dirtiest of boat jobs first! #catamaransailing #leopard48catamaran #sailing This video covers Annapolis - the Best and Worst sides, Naval Academy, Bacon Sails & Marine Supplies, Harness Creek in South River, and Gibson Island as we made our way north towards the C&D Canal. ANNAPOLIS We spent about 4 days here at one of the Chesapeake Bay and East coast main sailing ports. The best parts: 1. The town itself is historic, with nice restaurants and bars. 2. We took a mooring ball with the Annapolis Harbormaster at $25/day. That gets you baths, laundry and a means for mail and package receipt. 3. We found a GREAT boat supply place - Bacon Sails and Marine. They are a secondhand shop with a large array of sailing gear at used, discounted prices. We picked up some block and tackle we needed for a great price and were able to procure some odd, hard to get parts for our Barbour-hauler. 4. We toured the Naval Academy and that was a treat, as well as lunch at the Officers Club. The worst parts: 1. A bit touristy for us. The typical tourist shops on Main Street were not unique. The weekends get a bit crowded with lots of inland folks coming to enjoy the town. 2. Harbor is crowded, mooring balls are very close to each other with lots of boats sailing very close to ours. 3. Water was broken at the harbormaster dock. Only one washing machine/dryer and it’s in the bathroom. FEATURED LIGHTHOUSES Shoal Light. Thomas Point Shoal. South River, Maryland. New Point Comfort Lighthouse. Near Hampton Roads. SOUTH RIVER - HARNESS CREEK - QUIET WATERS STATE PARK What a cool quiet anchorage so close to Annapolis ! The nearby Quiet Waters State Park has plenty of hiking trails and water overlooks, as well as concerts throughout the summer. There is a West Marine just a short walk out of the park as well. GIBSON ISLAND MD This was an unexpected anchoring pleasure only a couple hours north of Annapolis! A horse farm turned boarding facility sits on the hill overlooking the water, osprey nests, and pure nature. Nearby Dobbins Island and Little Island have private island homes. A week of adventure! We conclude last week's sailing passage from Provincetown, Cape Cod, Massachusetts to Gloucester, Massachusetts, arriving on a mooring at the end of the day. From there, Robin found a sweet intracoastal passage on the Annisquam River, which connects Gloucester Harbor to Ipswich Bay. This makes a lot of firsts, including calling for bridge openings. Two hours later, Arabella arrived in the Merrimack River, which is a tricky place for any boat to navigate because of rocks, intense currents, and at this time, perigean spring tides.
