We have been working on our Chainplates just as we have been working on our Mast tangs with similar goals of - reduced potential points of failure - a very Dyneema friendly rig - simple for DIY, so much that we can repair or re-rig while cruising Here we get to see our first Dyneema Chainplate Loop in position. With this drill bit sharpening tool it is possible to sharpen small drill bits without breaking them. Quickly sharpening small drill bits on a bench grinder can be very difficult. Easily too much is taken off and the drill bit becomes uneven. Also it can break during the process. Another problem is that if you sharpen it with a bench grinder the tip gets too hot and can loosen it strength or hardness. This sharpening drill bit tool works with a whetstone. This way it is possible to sharpen the drill bits in a more gentle manner. This DIY drill bit sharpening tool can be easily made.

Thanks to brilliant help in comments and directly we are here with version 2 of our own mast tangs to attach dyneema shrouds to the mast. Lots of improvements since the last video to address concerns such as: - should we use FR4 - bolt threads in FR4 - bolt hole size - bolt hole position - flat surface for bolt head/nut Also we have added the end plates. These first tangs are for our mizzen (which is small! Less than 85 sq feet which is under 8 m2). While working on this we have also been making huge progress on the lower support for the mizzen ie the mast foot and chainplates, they will be in the next video. We know this is not the final version, depending on deliveries there should be a next version very soon with more significant changes :-) Our goals are - reduced potential points of failure compared to traditional tangs, pins and thimbles. - a tang that is very Dyneema friendly without sharp bends or edges. - simple for DIY, so much that replacement tangs can be made anywhere providing you have basic hand tools and the right materials (which realistically are going to be specialist enough to need to carry spares with you). This design will be a huge cost saver if you are renewing the rigging on an older boat when you might otherwise need to replace several of the stainless steel parts of the original tangs even if you are fitting dyneema shrouds. This is experimental prototyping of a design that began on our blog a couple of years ago. We have had loads of help improving the design which is very much appreciated. In previous video's we have shown the chainplate backing plates we are fitting for Dyneema look chainplates. We have also shown strengthening the support for our mizzen mast foot. This is a significant next step towards being able to put our mizzen mast back up. At the port of Les Sables d'Olonne the catamaran was taken out of the water by a crane and driven over the road for 300 meters, to the wharf of Yacht Care Services. For 2 weeks they worked on the underwater ship of the catamaran: cleaning (spray the algae off), filling up scratches from the times we hit the bottom or rocks while sailing, repairing cracks, and applying new primer and 2 layers of anti-fouling. So this big maintenance has to be done every once in a while and for us it was the first time to arrange this ourselves. It was exciting to see your boat being lifted out of the water and interesting to follow the process of the maintenance of our boat at the wharf while staying on board.

It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. In this episode we start with a short visit to the magnificent island of #Karpathos, where nice winds & beautiful nature surprise us. There our friends have the #GonesurfingCrete windsurfing and wingfoiling station. Lots of wind resulted in lots of fun in and on the water, while Crete's great cousine and fair prices allowed us to take a small brake from cooking. A light westerly weather window allowed us to sail overnight to #Santorini. The Volcanic island has become one of #Greece's most popular islands, providing spectacular views, magnificient sunsets, interesting geology and probably excellent partiying oportunities. Too crowded and expensive for our budget, we quickly sailed on to #Ios, providing calm anchorages, wingfoiling and our long lost friends from SV Esperanza. Following meeting up with our friends, we have a constant and unofficial race going. Dory Man remains unbeaten to date - although in all fairness we try way too hard not to loose. It’s a good day for a remodel! In episode 54, I’ll share a progress update with you about our lovely project boat. We are rebuilding the cabinet where the Domestic Electric Cooler and our Bluetti Powerpack will be installed, the baseboard for the cabinets and a temporary countertop. The challenging part of this project is all the curves that needed to be cut precisely to get a tight fit. I admit, I have very little experience with wood working. But, it was worth the learning curve…I was able to use new tools like the curve tool, a laser level cube, and even the old pieces of galley to get the dimensions and curves just right for installation. The paint was peeling, there were spider cracks, water was intruding, and let's be honest it just looked awful. After weeks of prep which included sanding for weeks on end, filling in all the cracks and fiberglassing the gauges we created from digging out moist parts in the toe rails. We can finally see that it was all worth it!! Our $100 boat just got a MAJOR upgrade! The M.S. Blauw was built as an exploration yacht for an owner with a background in the offshore industry. The entire vessel is built with the same attention to safety as a commercial seagoing vessel. Over the years, the ship has made several major voyages, including to Greenland and North America. At the moment the ship is being used as a live aboard. No expense has been spared on maintenance. The entire hull and bottom have been painted this year, and the ship has been re-certified. Ready for a journey? A huge breakthrough in our move to full dyneema standing rigging. Here we create our own mast tangs to attach dyneema shrouds to the mast. This significantly reduces the potential points of failure compared to traditional tangs, pins and thimbles. It also create a tang that is very Dyneema friendly without sharp bends or edges. Finally, it is simple for DIY, so much that replacement tangs can be made anywhere providing you have basic hand tools and the right FR4 (carry spare with you). This design will be a huge cost saver if you are renewing the rigging on an older boat when you might otherwise need to replace the several of the stainless steel parts of the original tangs even if you are fitting dyneema shrouds. This is the actual building of out latest design that began on our blog a couple of years ago. Over the last three years we have had loads of helop from comments and from other YouTube channels, particularly @RiggingDoctor In previous video's we have shown the chainplate backing plates we are fitting for Dyneema look chainplates. We have also shown strengthening the support for our mizzen mast foot. This is a significant next steo towards being able to put our mizzen mast back up. We are changing all the standing rigging on our 1977 Rival 38 to Dyneema synthetic rigging. That includes all shrouds, stays and even the chainplates for both masts of our ketch rig. This is the 6th episode in our Dyneema series that will cover all the design choices, the practicalities of a completely DIY re-rig and then how it works out when we go sailing. Our goal is a rig that is: - stronger - lighter - cheaper - allows us to sail faster - lasts longer - can be DIY maintained even replaced, anywhere in the world We are refitting a 1977 Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Three years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all electric (motor, cooking etc).
