Welcome to Episode 4 my first time Spinnaker sailing. We are out of Mooloolaba with my good mate Paul and my father in-law Ron. it was a great day not a lot of wind so we had a crack. All went well and nothing broke. All in all a great sail. We will do our best to make it fun and not to much maintenance. Probably dreaming on that bit. Not so much a maintenance blog this week but a look at what happens when we had major battery failure on your Amel sailboat in a foreign country with no technical support or battery suppliers. Several traumatic, stranded weeks followed a catastrophic battery meltdown in Colombia. Our entire Victron battery bank of 8 x 24v 440ah literally melted into a solid block and we had to source replacements. Was it a faulty Mastervolt Chargemaster or faulty Victron Battery that caused the runaway overheating.. or was it a shore power electrical surge? I never did find out, but it was one of those occasions where I actually wanted to give up on our whole sailing dream and return to land life. If you're a professional, expert or even an old salty sea dog with good advice or experience with battery meltdowns on sailboats or DC battery systems in general, then please leave any constructive criticism, insight and advice in the comments below the videos. Delray had become home for us and is easily one of our favorite spots on the Florida East Coast. It was time though, to head off into the horizon. First was a list of maintenance items for Seawind and after they were done, we shoved off in the early morning hours for Miami. A long day in the ICW and an anchorage we hadn't ever been to before, with storms in the forecast. Our next day we have an abandoned boat drag anchor right at our bow! Welcome back to the channel! In this episode, I’m sharing a progress update on our lovely project boat. Be sure to watch, Tearing Out The Galley | Boat remodel EP 51 to find out what happens! To kick things off we discovered some dry rot wood on the bulked that’s separating aft locker from the galley. Since this is my first time tackling dry rot in the galley, I decided to seek the advice of a Master Marine Carpenter. He recommended that I remove the damaged portion of the existing bulkhead and replace it with a patch. Then, sister a new piece of marine-grade plywood to the bulkhead, which helps to add additional strength and support. This may sound easier said than done, but the goal is after we figure out how to remove tabbing, we can then measure and cut to remove the rot properly. It will take a little creativity on our part, and the right tools to get this project done right. How would you have handled the dry rot differently? Let us know in the comments.👇 Homes, Boats & Travel by Jose Torres 00:00 Intro 00:29 Cost of Marine Plywood 00:49 Dometic DZ Template 02:00 Curve Tool 03:00 Galley Overview 04:59 Bulkhead Damage 05:46 Testing the Dometic Template 05:45 Bulkhead Issues 08:29 Removing Damaged Portion of Bulkhead 08:58 Waste Not - Use Removed Parts for Templates 10:58 Bulkhead without damage portion 10:26 Description of Pearson 34 Hull Liner 11:59 A Word on Veneer 12:21 New Bulkhead Wood Plug 12:54 New Bulkhead Sister Board 14:05 How Did I made the Bulkhead Templates to Cut the Wood and a Word about Marine Plywood 19:00 Wrap-Up Music by ArtList.com - https://artlist.io/Jose-3065585 Ollo Clip - 10% Discount - https://olloclip.com/?rfsn=3111042.37... Thank you to EcoFlow, https://us.ecoflow.com/products/delta-mini-portable-power-station?aff=264, who sent us their Delta Mini Portable Power Station to test. We've been wanting to monitor the refrigerator's performance and actual electrical draw, and it's been such a good tool for that. We start this week with the shop itself. It's been a long while since we had a big visual change to the boat shop, and this week, we make preparations for installing the last three planks (sheer strake, second strake, and whiskey plank, from top to bottom, respectively). We needed the staging to facilitate constructing the interior, and we're finally back in epoxy friendly temperatures, so we're able to glue the scarfs for each strake. Steam generators seem to have personalities and steam bending wood is a bit of an art. There are tried-and-true methods, of course, having to do with wood thickness and species that are good for bending, but then there are the machines to do it, and for that we called in Andrew Guest of Restoring Rosalind who owns THREE of these: One of his own making, and two he's acquired from friends of his boat restoration project in Mystic, Connecticut. If you can recall from a couple of weeks ago, we need to bend some of our locust covering boards (the outermost deck planking that covers the top edge of the sheer strake planks) to make the most of the locust we have left. Annie B made a couple of videos about the steam generator Andrew built. Here's one of them: https://youtu.be/F6Qpb2cB7UM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur boat builder building a 38' wooden boat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Boat work is a major part of any sailing circumnavigation. A broken VHF radio, broken bilge pump, life raft needing a service and rusted anchor chain needing replacement. These are just a few of the maintenance challenges we have to tackle for Florence to be ready to sail on across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean and then onward back to England once more. We have been sailing around the world for 6 years after setting off from England in 2016 on board our 37ft sail boat Florence. Join us as we share the highs, lows, and challenges of travelling around the world by boat, Sailing offshore across the Oceans and exploring remote locations with our own little tiny house. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #TheCruisingKiwis

Out-Haul Furler Service/Maintenance and fixing Grease Nipples/Zerk Fittings to In-Mast Furler System
#outhaul #inmast #furler #leroysomer #furlerservice #furlermaintenence #amelyachts #boatmaintenance #bonfiglioli #boatdiy #boatrepair #gearboxrepair #gearboxservice This is the second part of a 2-part maintenance blog on servicing the Leroy Somer furlers on our Amel Super Maramu. In an in-mast furling system, the mainsails wraps around a tube inside a hollow mast. It is unfurled by an outhaul furler and furled back in with an in-haul/in-mast furler. It's easy to reef from the cockpit while underway and there's no need to flake or cover the mainsail when done sailing, which makes furling easy when short-handed. The downside is, if the sail is not handled properly while furling and unfurling, it can bunch up and jam inside the mast. There are many moving parts too, which can fail without routine servicing. So in this episode I service the in-haul/in-mast furler, which, by the looks of it, hadn't been serviced in the lifetime of the boat - which would have been over 20 years! I also add grease nipples / zerk fittings into the gearbox to make it easier to add grease and prevent future lubrication problems. If you would like see the video on the INHAUL FURLER, check it out here: https://youtu.be/VeZP4VOQelk If you're a professional, expert or even an old salty sea dog with some good advice on how to service outhaul furlers or inmast furling systems in general, then please leave any constructive criticism, insight and advice in the comments below the videos. #lostcity #trekking #turcol #lostcitycolombia #lostcitytrek This journey was not easy but it was exciting. We have already been trekking for 2 days non stop up and down hills and through slippery trails( see last Episode 119). On this second part of the trek, we continued upwards , wading through streams and rivers, sometimes up to our waists. They told us it is not an easy hike and you have to be fit and now we could see why . The final hike to the top was actually the steepest part but when you reach the top , you can see why the Lost City was built here. It is a sacred place and we were glad to meet the shaman and for him to talk to us all and wish that we will do something to help care for this beautiful natural land. It was a good message to hold onto. Our tour company were amazed that this many children managed to complete the trek , all of us with smiles on our faces right to the end. They don’t ever remember leading a group with this many young children , we were so proud of them all. We used the tour operator Turcol and they were brilliant. Because of the size of our group ( about 30) we had two guides, two translators and two cooks, the food was excellent and not a single person from our group got sick. In addition, all the bedding and mosquito nets were clean and well maintained. We would highly recommend doing the trek with this travel company: https://turcol.co/ Music in this video deserves a Thanks to : " http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-..." This is the third and final video in the Steve D’Antonio Cruising Conversations series. In the first two videos, we introduced our viewers to Steve D’Antonio and learned about his consulting business and his background that led him to this rewarding career. This next video covers how Steve teaches his clients to understand their boat and his favorite aspect of his consulting - going out cruising with clients. Both Jeff and Steve make it a point to go out cruising with clients and learn what works best for them out on the water and how they can better understand their boat and systems. There is no better teacher than experience when it comes to cruising. Some of Steve’s favorite client passages are at high latitude. This environment is ideal for testing out a trawler as weather conditions are constantly changing, and the views and scenery along the way make for a beautiful ride. In this type of faraway cruising, the crew aboard can test themselves and the systems aboard to find out which ones need work or practice and which are functioning as normal. This cruising also instills confidence in the future cruisers as they are relying on themselves to learn the boat inside and out. Watching this video will give you an inside look into a few of the high latitude passages that Steve has been apart of and some expert advice he has learned from years of remote cruising. Boat life Delray was blissful. We spent a month here after the holiday working on boat maintenance and people maintenance. Time flew by and we even found some time to play, going diving for the first time at the Blue Heron Bridge in West Palm,, and visiting the Wakodahatchee Wetlands. Coach roof (cabin house) carlins are installed this week, and there's probably not much more satisfying than seeing finish go onto interior pieces before they're assembled like big-kid Lego, where they'll live all their days from here on out. Since the surface just above it will be strip built then fiberglassed, the half-lap joinery is simple and more than sufficient. The Sea Frost refrigeration unit is unboxed on camera, and the heart-stopping process unfolds of finally putting holes into the beautiful refrigerator we've made. The condenser plates are really durable, built like slim tanks that are puncture proof. We chit chat about what kind of space should be dedicated to the boat refrigerator and freezer. And finally, we get to preparing, hosting, and then reflecting on our very last open house here in Granby. This time next year we'll be thinking about launching this boat. More on that soon. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Sorry it's been a while folks. We have had a lot of boat maintenance and limited internet to upload our videos. Come along with us as we explore Hummocky Island and Great Keppel Island. We pick up Sarah's parents so they can experience boat life and Brendan catches a Monster Painted Cray. The sunsets in Keppel are by far the best we've seen yet.
Nat to the RESCUE - We stop to help another yacht with a fishing net entangled around its prop and Nat free dives into chilly waters to cut it off at sea. So I decided to make Twice Baked Potatoes and Cucumber Salad, my Babe's Recipes for her Mother's Day Dinner. The result was nothing but a success, even though I underestimated how involved twice baked potatoes was. It was really fun to do this for a my love, it also helps me better understand the work that goes into recipes. 👉 Recipe For Twice Baked Potatoes - https://www.chrisdoeswhat.com/taco-meat-twice-baked-potatoes/ 👉 Recipe For Cucumber Salad - https://www.chrisdoeswhat.com/creamy-dilly-cucumber-salad/ Hope you enjoyed seeing a guy who could burn water when my babe met me, cook a my wives' well written recipes from scratch. The hardest part for me was being 6 foot and hunched over the counter. Spending a few hours in the kitchen it reminds me how much work cooking can be. Doing my DIYs I can stop and come back later if I need, cooking, once you start there are no breaks. 00:00 Swinging Cucumber Intro 01:47 Making Cucumber Salad Recipe 08:08 Making Twice Baked Potatoes Recipe 📢 Our Website: https://www.chrisdoeswhat.com/ 📢 See Our Recipes: https://www.dininginwithdanielle.com Tools In The Garage: 🛠 Milwaukee 18-Volt Drill and Impact Driver Kit https://amzn.to/366BwxM 🛠 Husky Mechanics Tool Set https://amzn.to/3kuGUzD 🛠 Angle Grinder https://amzn.to/36FaC09 🛠 Forney Easy Weld Welder https://amzn.to/3romDR1 🛠 Welding Helmet https://amzn.to/3wOq58z What We Us In The Kitchen: 🍽 KitchenAid https://amzn.to/3x0T8JY 🍽 Roasting Pans https://amzn.to/3jahTLq 🍽 Cooking Sheet https://amzn.to/3JcEa5O 🍽 Kitchen Utensils Set https://amzn.to/3Kg9xOg 🍽Cutting Boards https://amzn.to/3KhzdKw 🍽 Kitchen Knives https://amzn.to/36USV0d 🍽 Kitchen Oven Safe Pans https://amzn.to/3DGkfuY 💎 Have a Website? Highs and lows again this week - I built a standing desk onboard, fitted a roller blind, moved on full-time, and slept awfully! I tend to avoid over-editing, as apart from it taking FOREVER, I prefer to show things how they are, but boy did I cut my rainy day monologue down! Talking to you all definitely made me feel better and able to face the day, so thank you all for being there! But you definitely didn't need to watch my full-on ramble 😂 Now I'm on the boat full-time my videos might change a bit, as there's less DIY and more day-to-day stuff happening, but hopefully you'll all stick with me, it's great to have you all along for the (virtual) ride! Ganymede is due her blacking and a full survey the end of next week, so I'll try and get some footage of that. Fingers crossed you can look out for that probably the video after next!

Open House: Come see this wooden boat in person! https://www.acorntoarabella.com/open-house Get your name or a short message on a plank: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/merchandise We begin by making the locust coach roof carlins identically curved, and then lay them out where they're going to do the best work of framing hatches and adding a whole lot of strength to the entire structure. Considerations also include where the dinghy will rest when put on deck during offshore passages—this week you'll a good peek at the plans for the tender that Steve has chosen. It's been a minute since we've cut root stock knees, and a beautiful one goes into the assembly for the coach roof. Steve makes a "time-consuming whoopsie," which luckily was solved with some searching through the locust pile again. It happens to the best of us! What happened to that steamed locust from last week? Well, it snapped. A healthy portion is still usable, especially the length closest to where the steam entered the bag. It makes us hopeful about steaming if we are more gentle with what we ask it to do, but more aggressive with the steam. Also: The companionway bone is connected to the butterfly hatch bone. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts.
