We do so many exciting things such as swimming in a volcanic cavern, learning about mangroves, cycling to the wall of tears, finding a lava tunnel, hiking across volcanic plains, observing marine iguanas and even finding a lonesome flamingo. This week we take a dive deep into the engine room (when I say we, it's mostly Kieran, okey only Kieran). I am busy with other things, stay tuned. Kieran spends hours in the small room, taking the engine apart bit by bit. Finally understanding what has caused all our issues with the gearbox. Last step is to remove the engine all together to give it a proper birthday. Hopefully with all this maintenance both the engine and gearbox will run smoothly in the future when we finally put Merewether II back in the water. This life we keep chasing on the ocean is a long way off at the moment but we feel with hard work and the right people behind up we can get there. As we peel the layers back there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel and it could very well be to an ocean sailing paradise haha. We have a couple days until the next owner of the boat arrives and we still have a lot to do. By the way... if you still don't know we sold our boat in Grenada in the Caribbean and we are getting her ready for the new owner. This week we finally installed the amazing valves we have waited for a long time to get our hands on. For some great quality Marelon valves check their website for more information: https://www.forespar.com/marelon-marine-boat-plumbing.shtml Friends in this episode: @SailLife @TeuluTribe Where the boat is: https://spiceislandmarine.com New owner of the boat: expedition_karambak (insta) We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). The last season has been a dream coming true… we are exploring the Brazilian coast with OUR BOAT that we called Odd.. But wait? What happened to the house? Check out our website to know more about it https://www.oddlifecrafting.com/blog We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. Ocean swim for sailing kitten at mysterious tropical Island We live on a sailing boat with our kitten Mocha who is curious about the water around her. If the worst happened and she fell off the boat she needs to know she can make it back to the catamaran safely so while exploring beautiful Tioman Island Mocha went for her first swim. We also explored above and below the surface of the ocean in Tioman spotting an endangered Hawksbill sea turtle while scuba diving, a chameleon while on a jungle walk and the pièce de résistance South East Asia's Rafflesia flower, the worlds largest blooming plant secreted away deep in the jungle on this mysterious island. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #sailingwithcats #diving #rafflesia #TheCruisingKiwis #228

Thanks for joining us today as I bring you a new series to review some of my top picks in products that I think are going to be game changers to not only those of us in Boat Life, but also off-grid homes and cottages, RVs, camper vans, Tiny Homes, Alternative Lifestyles, etc. Today we focus on the most important factor in any off-grid energy system, the storage, being the batteries. Lately we have a plethora of great options available in new technology batteries using Lithium Iron Phosphate (LifePO4) that pretty much guarantee a minimum 10-year lifespan with zero maintenance. Even better, there are now companies that are competing in this space that are helping to finally bring the cost of these batteries down to a level that most of can afford. The most recent batteries I've been testing for todays episode are the 24Vdc 200Ah LifePO4 batteries by REDODO. These batteries have been tested and reviewed by other Youtube channels like HOBOTECH and Will Prowse Solar that have given us great information about the construction and materials used in these batteries so we know exactly what we are getting, so my intention was solely to test these batteries under rigorous conditions for a solid 3 months of daily use onboard SOPHISTICATED LADY and see how they faired. I hope you enjoy the video, and I look forward to your comments below! Cheers, Captain Rick More information on the full line of REDODO Lithium batteries at: http://www.RedodoPower.com and use the code 'Captain' at checkout to gain an additional 4% discount on your purchase. #Amelyacht #sailboatDIY #boatDIY #electricmotor #sailboatlife #gearboxrepair #boating #boatrepair #boatmaintenance #LeroySomer #Inmastfurler #winch #Cima1915 #Bonfliglioli When our electric in-mast furler failed I opened up the Leroy Somer motor to find the stator magnet had completely disintegrated. Instead of just replacing the magnet I decided our 20 year old in-mast furler mechanism needed a complete upgrade. However, these aren't off the shelf items so with the help of a good friend in New Zealand, I sourced various parts and custom built a new unit which - in my opinion at least - was better than the original and far cheaper than a replacement from Amel. If you're a professional, expert or even an old salty sea dog with some good advice on how to replace or repair in-mast furlers on a sailboat.. or in-mast furling mechanisms in general, then please leave any constructive criticism, insight and advice in the comments below the videos. Sometimes you need to admit you did something wrong... and that's what happened this week. We needed to start a new project for the boat from scratch. Well, we sold our sailboat after 2 years of refit and 2 years sailing the Brazilian coast and some islands in the Caribbean. Now... we are in Grenada in the Caribbean and it's time to prepare our boat for the new owner. We had a list of projects to tackle in 3 weeks and then we found out that we needed to start a project from square one and we had no experience doing it. But... we were willing to learn the crafts to hand out the boat as we wish it was delivered to us. It was a lot of work and we learned so much! Did we do a good job? Well, you need to watch the video to find out 😁 Friends in this episode: @SailLife @mrevansd (insta) Where we are at: https://spiceislandmarine.com ____________________________________________________ We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. CAR STOLEN while SAILING Indonesia We are offshore sailing once again in our sailing catamaran, crossing the South China Sea shipping lane and leaving the beautiful, remote, paradise that is The Anambas Islands and making a bee line back to Malaysia and the the equally isolated and charming Tioman Islands. But this time we are not alone. we are sailing with our friends, firefighter Josh who completed his first ocean crossing with us back in 2015 and his girlfriend Courtney (whose car got stolen from Auckland while she was sailing with us) will also tick her first offshore experience off on our live aboard sail boat the good ship Javelot. Indonesia must qualify as one of the safest and cheapest places to live in 2023, what do you think? Thank you very much for supporting our channel. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #sailing #offshore #TheCruisingKiwis #226

#svingenuity #fountainepajot #catamaran As with any new purchase, it's always nice to go on our very first adventure at sea. We decided to go to Key West, since it was not too far out of the way and would be a good learning experience. We hired a captain to take us on this Christmastime Journey for four days. What happened next besides the weather turning bad will be revealed in the video. As always, thanks for watching. In this video, we review a Scubbis Hull Cleaning kit to see if it can remove the growth from our hull. The boat hasn't been lifted since the start of the season and the antifoul is now almost 2 years old. Will this clean things up and is it worth the money? Found quite a surprise when removing the old Cutlass Bearing! This short video shows the way I removed the old and installed the new bearing. The other thing about the old bearing was that it had straight vanes. I replaced with the correct spiral vaned cutlass bearing for sailboats with left hand (LH) spinning propllers. On a weekend between removing the old and installing the new bearing, We took our Macgregor 26M Galactica out to Half Moon Cove on Mark Twain Lake with some friends where we were one of the scheduled stops on the 2nd Annual MTL B.A.C.A Poker Run! BACA is Bikers Against Child Abuse. It was fun seeing friends and meeting so many really nice people all with a love of the water. As Steve and Robin prepare for a trip to New Mexico for rock climbing, they prepare their DIY wooden sailboat for the time they'll be away. Steve ends up getting into details of Arabella's 12-volt marine electrical system as he chases some possible stray electrical current, after consulting Nigel Calder's helpful marine electrical book, he sets to troubleshooting a completely depleted propeller zinc. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! Great day cruiser boat made to be enjoyed. It has a spacious cockpit and a considerable cabin with a separate bathroom. Its 300hp Yamaha 4 Stroke Engine with only 380 engine hours, makes it nearly as good as a new unit. A boat from the Italian shipyard Sessa Marine, it has extensive equipment in extras, a set of covers and up-to-date maintenance by the official service of the area. Taxes Paid. For this outboard version of the KL27, Sessa Marine has created an ergonomic design where life on board is centred on the stern without sacrificing design or the typical sporting spirit of the Key Largo brand. Capacity 8 persons. https://www.networkyachtbrokersbarcelona.com/boats_for_sale/Sessa_Marine_Key_Largo_27-34F8954591.html/

Welcome back to our Boat Commissioning series! In this episode, we'll guide you through the installation of canvas and electronics on your boat. Let's get started! First, let's talk about canvas. It's important to choose the right kind of materials that will withstand the elements and provide durable protection. When installing canvas, make sure to use the right size framing and corrosion-resistant hardware for your specific design. For example, if you are going to install solar panels on your bimini frame, you may want to go to bigger stainless steel tubing on this Catalina 445 we went with 1.25” Stainless Steel to account for the additional weight of the solar panels and to stiffen the frame. Now, let's move on to electronics. When wiring your boat, safety is paramount. Start by creating a comprehensive electrical plan, labeling each wire, and using color-coded cables for easy identification. Ensure all connections are properly sealed to prevent water damage. When mounting electronics, consider their location for convenient access and protection from rough waters. As you can see, running wiring through a boat after construction is not an easy task and it is very time consuming. You have to open access points along the way to do your wire runs. So it is extremely important that you use the right gauge wire for the distance of the run and the use of the electronic. Cutting corners and using cheap thin wire, creates heat, adds resistance to the current flow and affects the life of your equipment. During installation, don't forget to follow manufacturer's instructions and consult a professional if needed. Properly grounding your electronics system is crucial for safety and optimal performance. Lastly, don't overlook regular maintenance. Make it a habit to inspect your canvas and electronics periodically for any signs of wear or malfunction. Clean any dirt or salt residue from the canvas and regularly test electronics to ensure they're working properly. Remember, a well-installed canvas and electronics system will not only enhance your boating experience but also ensure your safety on the water. Thanks for joining us today on our Boat Commissioning Journey! If you found this video helpful, don't forget to give it a thumbs up and subscribe to our channel for more boating tips and tricks. Happy boating!"
