Our 'learning by Trial' sessions continue with repairing the outhaul system within the boom. Since we don't have access to our dearest technical services at this long distance trip it is up to us to do the necessary repairs. We teared off the outhaul ropes at heavy weather by using electrical winch. At Kalymnos, as the weather gets calmer we start an operation to remove the blocks in the boom. Blocks insist but we seem to be more stubborn. With a great teamwork we manage to remove the blocks inside the boom and place the boom in place. This is Episode 42 of our adventure. After days of prep Hugh can finally start work on the top coats for our non slip deck. He spends time masking it with beautiful rounds and corners and then applies an epoxy paint and a thick layer of sand. 24hrs later he was able to blow away the sand and paint another 3 coats before applying a lacquer to seal and protect it. We are a family of five with plans for an epic adventure, sailing around the world. We have bought a boat we have to gut it, rebuild it, sell all of our possessions and have the guts to cast off. Our Mizzen Mast needs a lot of love before we can put it up, So while waiting for my new Router to make the Mark III Tangs I have been working on the two antennas. This has been a journey of discovery. I needed to fit a duct in the mast, - never done that before. I needed to rivet to the mast - never done that before. Episode 014 We managed to enjoy a couple of 'nice' days since leaving the marina. A night spent anchored in Islington Bay, listening to the sound of rain whilst we sat in our cockpit protected by our newly installed cockpit enclosure reminded us why we chose to live this lifestyle. With just a few other boats anchored around us, we felt all alone in this beautiful anchorage listening to the calls of the tīeke (saddleback). This was a welcome relief from all the work we had just done on Tāiko after several weeks on the hard stand installing Tāiko's new Beta Marine engine and other jobs. However, this tranquility does not last long and we soon need to find shelter. In this video we spend a few days anchored off Rotoroa Island in the Hauraki Gulf waiting for severe gales to pass and Adam has an opportunity to put all that he's read and learned into practice and test out our storm anchoring. Some weather was predicted and some not. We experienced 50 knots of wind for several days, thunderstorms and lightning directly over Tāiko, torrential rain, and there were added weather warnings of possible tornadoes forming. We were not alone though, just one other boat and us saw this adverse weather event out in Home Bay. After having just been through another squall within this system, within minutes the wind, rain, and lightning stopped and there was blazing sunshine! We kid you not. The bay was like a millpond. Like it never happened. At first we were nervous to weigh anchor and move on in case another squall made an appearance but eventually we did. We had to motor the whole way! Enrique has been promising me to go to the hot springs for days but there was always something more important that need been done. Sailboats need maintenance and we spent most of our time Sailing Turkey looking for boat parts. Now it’s finally time to enjoy our very own hot springs! But on our dingy ride we spot something in the distance. Is it another uninhabited island? Well not quite. We take our boat closer and realize it is a massive straw umbrella drifting in the bay near Bodrum. Definitively the "Strangest Thing" we ever found in the sea. The floating oddity actually makes a very exclusive sun tanning spot and we spend some time just chilling on the beach umbrella drifting around. So before we visit our private island we already found a floating uninhabited island to call our own. The plan was, however, to enjoy the hot water on the deserted island. And the place is indeed void of anyone else. That is until a Turkish party boat passes by bringing blasting some catchy tunes right across the water. The next day we are back on CUBA and get surprised by a nasty squall early in the morning. The gusts reach almost 45 knots, and many sailboats and motorboats start dragging in the bay. Some boats are anchored way too close to us, so we spend the day just keeping an eye out that we are not hitting another sailboat. In the evening we had to take in some chain, and it was enough for our anchor to dislodge and CUBA to slide right through the bay. It was a miracle we did not hit another boat as we tried for several hours to pick up our anchor in over 40 knots winds. Those worries are soon forgotten, when we realize we soon run out of drinking water, water in the tanks and we also have to have our grey water holding tank emptied. That means we have to lift anchor once again and set sail to a marina. So, Enrique calls the marina for directions, we get our fenders out and sail onto the dock. Docking our sailboat works out without issues and soon we are on the way once again. We never stand still for long; we are always on the move and our goal is to sail around the world. These last two weeks have been hot hot hot! I've done some shopping for more DIY bits, cleaned and repaired the stove, removed some old silicone and putty from one of the window sills, and tried to get more of a breeze through the narrowboat. The UK is set to reach 40C this week so I've now abandoned the boat for a couple of days so I don't get heat stroke. Not going to lie - it's been tough on board these last few days! After a battery meltdown our entire @Victronenergy battery bank of 8 x 24v 440ah AGMs had to be replaced. But then @Battleborn stepped in and said they would replace our defunct AGM with Lithiums! Major upgrades were needed before we were 'lithium ready'. I made some surprising discoveries along the way, like a hidden Dolphin charger! In this blog I swap out the Mastervolt Chargemaster and instal a Victron Multiplus with MK3 VE Bus. The VE MultiPlus is a combined inverter / charger with many features include a true sine wave inverter, and other integration features. The model I instal is the 24v/3000/70A. Although there are many variations to this model they instal and configure in a very similar way. Just as with the locust for the covering boards, we only have so much of the pine deck planking and must make the most of it. Not all wooden sailboats have laid decks such as this one, which will be cotton caulked and pitched when it's finished. Since wooden boatbuilding is something that Steve is treating as a life experience, a laid boat deck is something he'd like to make on this journey. We meet Sam, who most recently worked on the AJ Meerwald (state tallship of New Jersey) restoration with Clark and Eisele Traditional Boatbuilding. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We decided to make some BOLD moves, hit PAUSE on our conventional careers & work full time, turning our DREAMS into reality. The past 12 months we have been working towards making full-time adventure possible. The first step was downsizing and minimizing our lives to fit into a 160ft. Airstream trailer which we converted completely ourselves without any experience. Living full time in our tiny home on wheels created the financial freedom we needed to take the next big step, buying our sailboat! She's another big project, but we're ready for another challenge.
