It felt like we were lost in another world of Waterfalls, Wild Rivers, Volcanic Springs, and Rusty Rocks. Dominica - the Nature Island - lies in the Eastern Caribbean. We will take you with us on our tour to see: Syndicate WaterFalls and Trail Calibishie Red Rocks The Chocolate Factory Cold Souffriere And our favorite - the Indian River. We drove past Portsmouth shorelines, residences, the old medical college, a plant farm on the way to the waterfalls. (BTW there are 9 volcanoes on Dominica). Syndicate Falls are over 100 feet tall. It is located at the foothills of Dominica's tallest mountain – Morne Diablotin – and close to the edge of the Picard River Gorge. The 205 acres of land, which is known as the “Syndicate Preserve”, was incorporated into the national park when the latter was established in January 2000. The falls were quite beautiful and we were the only ones there! At the visitor center, they even brewed drinks from the rainforest’s plants and we were able to sample them. The next stop was Red Rocks in Calibishie on the eastern windward side of the island. Very unique place - very different for the island. It was formed when a fast moving lava flow ran down and ignited everything in its path straight to the sea. It boiled the ocean, kicked up steam, cooled and left a slate grey earth. Over time, the iron in the earth oxidized - it rusted - and that’s how Red Rocks came to be. We had Lunch at Coral Reef restaurant with its panoramic view of Red Rocks, and Dominica’s longest coral reef where we watched the locals fish. Next stop the Point Baptiste chocolate factory where they grow, harvest, ferment, cook and blend the chocolate. It all began with a love story between Lennox Napier and Elma Gordon Cumming. They decided to leave England and the aristocratic conventional milieu with whom they belonged, to live a rural bohemian life in the island of Dominica that they had fallen in love with at first sight in 1930. Next stop is the only white sand beach on the island in Woodford Hills. Back in the van, we passed by a mountain being torn down. When we asked why, we found out that the materials were being used to build an airport. Actually the Chinese have the contract for building the airport and their trucks passed us by multiple times almost running us off the road. Next we drove up and down hills so steep it felt like a roller coaster ride on the way to the Cold Souffriere, a cold sulphur spring bubbling in the middle of a volcanic crater within Morne Aux Diables. Hot sulphur springs are much more common, but this is quite a unique site. What was really cool about this is that as we really looked around, you could tell you were in the middle of a former volcano. Hills on each side formed a circle around where we hiked. Indian River takes you down the wildest River in Dominica. Unfortunately, it is being threatened now by some development occurring nearby where they are filling in the land, causing water levels in the river to rise. We stop at the Bush Bar for a drink and walk the ginger lily gardens. Last but not least, we wanted to show you the difference between the Portsmouth and Roseau anchorages. The SCHENGEN SHUFFLE wouldn't work but a LONG STAY VISA would extend our travel time in France and Italy. Sailing, exploring and sightseeing the Cote d'Azure should not be rushed and we needed boat maintenance time too. Restrictions prevent tourists staying longer than 3 months in the Euro Zone but FRANCE offers a long stay option. The VLS-T isn't impossible to get, but is time consuming. We have included an update on Entry/exit systems and visa regulations for non-EU residents. EES and ETIAS will go live this year and next respectively. We were the guests of honour at the Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club in Glasgow, Scotland, to share our story of how we sold everything we owned and bought a sailboat to live on. We have spent the last three years sailing around the Caribbean islands, through Central America and have now sailed across the Pacific Ocean to French Polynesia. It hasn't all been easy - we've run aground, been blackmailed and faced bigger storms that we ever hoped to see, but it's all been worth it. Not only does the element accumulate a huge amounts of mineral deposits from the hard water but on this occasion, so did the inlet valve and inner casing . So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat that was neglected for over 22 years and spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3) and called her Odd. The 4th season has been a dream coming true… we explored the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean, where we received an offer and we sold our boat. So, we moved to France to start building a brand new aluminum 43ft sailboat. The boatyard is gonna build the hull and other aluminum parts and we are gonna take over and finish the rest of the boat ourselves (Season 6). While the boatyard builds the hull we are gonna be converting a cargo van into our tiny house on wheels to live while building the boat (Season 5). But wait? What happened to the house? Episode 044 After a busy few months, we are starting to reap the rewards of our hard work and we start enjoying life back on anchor. We have made our way up the coast, 30 nautical mile, to Whangaroa Harbour, in Northland New Zealand where we spend some time relaxing. Although, our sailboat is well provisioned, we are wanting some fresh supplies, but the problem is we're in a remote location with the nearest shop either a short car ride to Kaeo or a half an hour taxi ride (or 15 nautical mile sail up the coast) to Mangōnui Harbour. We decided to try our hand at doing an online shop and grocery delivery. Adam also gets an early Christmas present that he has wanted for at least two years, and we are joined by our good friends Pam & Dene who are not only great company but get us out exploring the anchorage by boat and foot! From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. Der Bau des DIY Warmwasserboilers geht weiter, die Isolierung wird hergestellt, bei Squib an Bord wird die Steuersäule innen gestrichen und die Akkus ziehen an ihren endgültigen Platz. Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei komplett überholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen.
