Have you ever wonder what physics, geometry and levels have to do with a Galley Rebuild.....? Well we just found out as we build a gimbaled box for our new Induction Cooktop. Building the box was relatively easy compared with trying to find the balance point to install the gimbal pin and then figuring out the height to install the gimbal bracket. When you buy a stove a lot of this information is already set and figured out for you. When you do it from scratch, you have to figure it out yourself. Checkout the final stage of our rough galley rebuild. We still need do the finish (painting, butcher block countertop, shelves) work; but we achieve our goal of having a functional galley back on Reverie. We decided to remove propane from the boat except for the grill. So our galley is 100% electric. We install a new Induction Cooktop, new Convection Toaster Oven and bought some new pots/pans for Reverie. One thing to keep in mind with induction cooktops. To make them work efficiently, you have to buy the compatible pots & pans. Meaning your pots and pans have to be induction cooktop ready. We hope you enjoy this episode. We reclaimed them from a boat that was being decommissioned a couple of years ago. Grandpa gives them a good cleaning in the driveway before we start to install them. Meanwhile, Joe "the Machinist" puts more than a sparkle on the reclaimed bronze hardware from Victoria that will be used for the rudder assembly. Pintles and gudgeons are machined so they will receive plastic washers and bushings—this should decrease movement in the entire assembly. Anything that can reduce movement between fittings will ultimately lead to the whole thing lasting longer in the end. KP leads volunteers Ross and George as they get the house sides prepared for final installation. This means they'll need to smooth everything out and prepare the grub for glue. I discovered the easy and low cost method to attach a messenger line to a metal halyard. In the past, I simply tied a bowline knot and taped over the mess. This is a great example in why I normally don't do buddy sailing. Underway I discovered more and more problems not only with their boat but also the crew. This is a serious video with no script or acting only sharing the reality. The oceans don’t care if you’re a nice or sympathetic person, it threatens everyone the same. And disrespectful approach to oceans will cost your life. The aftermath from this sailing was pretty chocking to me. Owner of the boat I assisted don’t have money to keep up with maintenance making sure the boat is seaworthy. And the captains lack of understanding his responsibility and safety for his crew and himself is seriously questionable. On the boat side engine was not working properly, meaning they could not go above 1000rpm. No broadcasting AIS and no instruments working. No radar. A VHF only working 2,5NM when it should work at least 20NM. No satellite phone or modem for communication. Navigation lights not suitable for open water. No maps on the navigation systems only iPhone and the list goes on. On the crew side that should realised this is not a seaworthy boat leaving a marina late before a hurricane with no Jerry cans for extra diesel and already low on diesel. No sailing skills and obviously not understanding the incoming dangers. My mistake was to believe a boat used for comercial charter would not only have competent crew but also a seaworthy boat. Their original plan was sailing to Cartagena in Columbia via Linton Bay in Panama. When showing them the weather and also the predictions for thunderstorms they asked to buddy sail with me to Bocas. Assuming they where at least capable of 5 kts and also willing to work hard to follow my route being the ones asking for permission to sail along with me. Meaning I had to delay my departure with one day, and even delayed this limit with almost one more day. I have not shared everything here but I’m serious when saying this boat and it’s crew is an Desaster waiting to happen. All the ingredients for going totally wrong with a different outcome was here. If I had not pushed them so hard to get out of the hurricane zone they would been at the worst possible position and situation when Julia grew to a Hurricane. One of the two sailboats staying behind left next morning only 12-14 hours later. Meaning he was pretty close to us when I went back for my buddy boat telling them now it’s serious. His story is strong telling about the crazy weather destroying his sails on a big well maintained yacht, only hours behind us. So I have my reasons also based on my decades of experience to believe this story could get a different outcome. Some luck that the hurricane did not form 10-15 hours earlier and grew a bit more. And the fact I did not give up on this hopeless crew. Nor the owner or it’s crew ever realised or understand this situation or the potential outcome. In this video, we show you the long route we took to find our 50' Performance and Cruising Catamaran with Paralle Hybrid Propulsion system. We looked at all kinds of boats before settling on a New DIY Kit Catamaran from Schionning Designs. We helped design the boat we are building by creating a condept model, then worked with the designers and engineers to bring it to life. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Ancak yörenin denizleri yazın sanıldığından çok az rüzgarlı ve hep dalgalı olduğu için bu sporu gençlere teşvik etmek çok zor oluyor. 👏 Sadece gönüllülük ile yürütülen bu yelken okulları gençleri ve çocukları teşvik etmek için çok fazla maddi ve manevi mücadeleler veriyor. Gençler, yarış dönemlerinde maddi zorluklara rağmen, Ege ve Akdeniz'de gerçekleşen yarışlara uçakla değil karadan ulaşıyor ve yol yorgunluklarına rağmen bir de üzerine dinlenmeden Karadeniz'i temsil ederek yarışıyorlar. Bu gençler, her zaman Ege ve Akdeniz'in rüzgarlarını imrenerek mutlulukla yuvalarına geri dönüyorlar. Rüzgarsızlıkla başlayan seyir bol rüzgar ve dev dalgalarla devam etti. Kameralar dalgaları çekmek konusunda kifayetsiz kalıyor. Seyir boyunca ikiz yelkenlerden çok memnun kaldık. Aylardan beri uğraştığımız ve bir türlü çalıştıramadığımız rüzgar dümeni de mükemmel bir performans gösterip bizi sert havada inanılmaz rahatlattı. One of the many projects we are doing aboard Tāiko before we leave the marina is testing our custom made rain catcher. We had this custom made for us back in March 2022 when all the boat jobs were being undertaken. We've heard from other sailors that sailing is just spent time fixing your boat or waiting for boat parts in exotic locations. Therefore, on Tāiko, we live by the principle to keep things simple. One of the ways we are doing this is by not having a water maker on board Tāiko. However, it does mean we need to be very careful with our water use and need to have a contingency plan. After a few years of studying and working hard we decided it was time to make a change. We needed a change that would allow us to spend more time together, give us a better work/life balance, and the freedom to travel. While we still had time on our side, we wanted to use it to live rather than use it to chase money. Learning to sail was the answer. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages. With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. Sailing without a well-functioning engine with a proper range is nothing but poor seamanship. It ignores rule number one at sea, always make sure to have the margins on your side. Buddy sailing with this boat almost drove me nuts. This is a great example of why I normally don't do buddy sailing. Underway I discovered more and more problems not only with their boat but also with the crew. This is a serious video with no script or acting only sharing the reality. The oceans don’t care if you’re a nice or sympathetic person, it threatens everyone the same. And a disrespectful approach to oceans will cost your life. The aftermath of this sailing was pretty shocking to me. The owner of the boat I assisted didn’t have money to keep up with maintenance making sure the boat was seaworthy. And the captain's lack of understanding of his responsibility and safety for his crew and himself is seriously questionable. On the boat side engine was not working properly, meaning they could not go above 1000rpm. No broadcasting AIS and no instruments working. No radar. A VHF only works 2,5NM when it should work at least 20NM. No satellite phone or modem for communication. Navigation lights are not suitable for open water. No maps on the navigation systems only iPhones and the list goes on. On the crew side, they should realised this is not a seaworthy boat leaving a marina late before a hurricane with no Jerry cans for extra diesel and already low on diesel. No sailing skills and obviously not understanding the incoming dangers. My mistake was to believe a boat used for a commercial charter would not only have a competent crew but also a seaworthy boat. Their original plan was to sail to Cartagena in Columbia via Linton Bay in Panama. When showing them the weather and also the predictions for thunderstorms they asked to buddy sail with me to Bocas. Assuming they were at least capable of 5 kts and also willing to work hard to follow my route being the ones asking for permission to sail along with me. Meaning I had to delay my departure by one day, and even delayed this limit by almost one more day. I have not shared everything here but I’m serious when saying this boat and its crew is a disaster waiting to happen. All the ingredients for going totally wrong with a different outcome were here. If I had not pushed them so hard to get out of the hurricane zone they would been in the worst possible position and situation when Julia grew into a Hurricane. One of the two sailboats staying behind left the next morning only 12-14 hours later. Meaning he was pretty close to us when I went back for my buddy boat telling them now it’s serious. His story is strong telling about the crazy weather destroying his sails on a big well well-maintained yacht, only hours behind us. So I have my reasons also based on my decades of experience to believe this story could get a different outcome. Some luck that the hurricane did not form 10-15 hours earlier and grew a bit more. And the fact I did not give up on this hopeless crew. Nor the owner or its crew ever realise or understand this situation or the potential outcome.
