The Victron MultiPlus Charger/Inverter is a combined inverter and charger with many features include a true sine wave inverter, adaptive charging, hybrid PowerAssist technology and many integration features. The model I installed was a 24v/3000/70A. There are many variations to this model but they instal and configure in a very similar way. Although the VESmart Dongle lets you control the MultiPlus via bluetooth, it does not allow you to configure/program the unit. For this you need a VE MK-3 Bus Interface Dongle which allows you to connect the MultiPlus to a computer for configuration/programming and firmware updates. This dongle physically plugs into your MultiPlus but does not does not work via bluetooth. Episode 020 We have done so much work and upgrades to Tāiko since buying her in 2020. One of these upgrades is our electrical system. Adam has worked very hard figuring out our electrical system from installing new AGM batteries to designing a solar arch that would meet our needs living off grid. It's amazing what Adam has learned since we bought Tāiko, and each day we become more confident in being self-sufficient. Having sailed over 15.000 miles around our globe you should know what you're doing when maintaining your engine, right? Ha, turns out not! Expecting the next low pressure system reaching the Azores, we quickly hop over 50 nautical miles from the Azorian island Graciosa to Terceira. Here a long awaited package finally reaches us after enduring thousands of hard miles over months with important broken systems on board– even over 50 days across the Pacific Ocean. But before on Graciosa....thermal baths, what a special treat! On no other island have we walked as much as on Graciosa as Graciosa’s traffic system is rather improvable, making us hitchhike to the thermal baths of Carapacho lying at the foot of the caldeira we explored and showed you in our last episode. Rural, picturesque and quiet landscapes surprise us as well as the newly built breakwater close to Graciosa’s main town Santa Cruz da Graciosa – a new marina is being built!

We re-assemble this disassembled tree into a final glue-up stronger than the tree would have been with its heartwood, sapwood, and other imperfections removed. Lots of glue, lots of progress. Family Sailing life on passage to Indonesia We are sailing our catamaran from Darwin to Kupang Indonesia across the Timor Sea. Crossing this small band of ocean with us is our son Declan's girlfriend Chanelle who has never crossed an ocean. Although we hit a couple of squalls with lightening this is one easy ocean passage. So we take the time to stop and swim each day to shake off the heat of the day. And I make Bliss balls. Bliss Balls recipe 20 large pitted dates Half a cup of almonds and cashews Boiling water 2 Tbs cocoa 2Tbs peanut butter 2Tbs maple syrup 2 Tbs coconut oil 2 Tsp shedded coconut extra shredded coconut Place dates and nuts in a heat proof bowl and cover with boiling water for 15 mins. Drain dates and nuts. Add all remaining ingrediants with dates and nuts to a food processor and blend until smooth. Roll one tablespoon sized balls in the extra shredded coconut. Place balls in fridge for half an half then enjoy. Store in fridge. After spending some days in Ilhéus we decided to move to the next anchorage, a special one, Itacaré (Brazil). We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. In this episode, we carefully select construction grade, spruce, pine and fir lumber. I then make a scarfing jig to cut scarf joints before laminating the lumber. Everything is completed with basic woodworking skills and tools. I'm using Titebond 3 glue to laminate the lumber and the mast dimensions comes out of tables from the book: Design and Build your own Junk Rig by Derek Van Loan. This is part 1 of 2. We have to improve the way we carry our dinghy on our sailboat, 9 LIVES. So, we ordered a custom-built aluminum arch from Nautical Creations in Kentucky and added some very simple davits made from schedule 80 aluminum pipe and some stainless steel hardware. We convert this Cape Dory 27 from inboard diesel engine to dual function outboard well that will hold either the Epropulsion Navy EVO 3.0 electric outboard or the Tohatsu 6hp Sailpro gas outboard. While we're at it we also replace the rotted core in the cockpit footwell. When the owner wants to make long coastal trips with frequent motoring he can use the gas motor. Otherwise he can swap it out for the electric motor which will be sufficient when he does not require more than 10-20 miles range (depending on boat speed). In practice we expect he can motor out of port, set sail, and if the boat speed under sail is close to 5 knots then he can recharge the battery using the motor prop for regeneration. If the battery is only partially depleted it could fully recharge on an overnight passage or it may take a couple days if fully discharged. Annapolis Hybrid Marine epropulsion dealer www.annapolishybridmarine.com Pros and cons of electric inboard vs electric outboard motor: With an electric inboard motor it may be difficult to find space for both motor and batteries without placing batteries in lockers that might be useful for other items, an inboard requires a higher sailing speed before regeneration kicks in, the prop and shaft is always exposed to fouling and damage and cause drag under sail at speeds too low for regen to begin and they are less efficient at transferring power from motor to prop. On the plus side, because it is lower and closer to the centerline, an inboard prop will not ventilate (lose thrust by sucking air from the surface) like an outboard can do in choppy waters. The electric outboard can be swapped out for a gas motor if you have a failure of the electronics or plan a long coastal or river trip that requires more range. Advantages of gas outboard over diesel inboard: 1. Less cost up front and for future maintenance. 2. Less weight and wasted space. 3. Reduced complexity, which makes for easier future motor replacement or repairs. You can take the motor to the repair shop instead of bringing a mechanic and all his tools to the boat. 4. There is no fixed prop to snag fish traps and nets under sail. 5. If the prop ever gets fouled or damaged you just tilt it up and clear it or replace it by reaching over the transom. 6. Sailing performance is noticeably improved by less drag and turbulence once you remove the inboard’s fixed prop and seal off the prop aperture between keel and rudder. The rudder will also become more efficient. 7. You have the ability to swivel motor for side thrust when entering a tight marina slip. 8. An outboard well puts an end to inevitable diesel fuel and oil spilled into the bilge and their odors. 9. The self-contained outboard motor eliminates two more holes below the waterline—no engine cooling water seacock and plumbing or prop shaft in a leaky stuffing box. 10. Because you no longer need to access a diesel exhaust and prop shaft and all the rest, you can now seal off all the cockpit lockers from the bilge, giving you the added safety of collision bulkheads and less chance of flooding. 11. There is no need for a separate engine starting battery and charging circuit. This also makes conversion from lead acid batteries to lithium. 12. The motor does not radiate unwanted heat into the boat all night when you try to sleep in the summer or in the tropics after motoring. 13. A smaller motor has a smaller environmental impact. 14. Even if your electrics go dead you can pull start an outboard motor. 15. Outboard motors have less power loss than inboards, meaning that a 9.8hp outboard is closer in actual thrust output to a 15hp inboard engine. 16. You will become a better sailor by taking more care not to get in a situation where you rely on the inboard engine when you could use the sails instead. The more limited range and thrust of a small outboard teaches you to become a better sailor. You will find that as your sailing skills and experience in passage planning increase, there will come a corresponding decrease in the horsepower you need.
