Anchoring on the gulf side (we recommend Ocean View Resort & Sports Pub - best Karaoke on the island) , you still have easy access to all the island offers. If you like fossils, it’s an easy walk to the Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park, where you can view and learn about fossil mining. It was a former quarry used by Henry Flagler in the early 1900s to help his building of the Overseas Railroad. https://www.floridastateparks.org/WindleyKey Of course, we paid a visit to the Bass Pro Shop, explored the Hemingway PILAR replica, fished along the way, and explored the various mangroves and creeks. One calm day, we even dinghied over to the ocean side for some snorkeling at Cheeca Rocks, a shallow 6-12 feet coral reef located within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. It lies approximately one mile to the southeast of Upper Matecumbe Key within a Sanctuary Preservation Area. And of course, since we were in crystal clear water, we fit in some diving on the boat to do some repairs and check the keel damage, as well as some helm work replacing an incorrectly sized clutch block. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. With reps from Simrad, Garmin and Furuno passing on their expert knowledge in an Electronics Masterclass, giving customers the opportunity to learn how to fine-tune their boat technology and utilise its features to the extreme. Yamaha joined us for the day to demonstrate how to reach a whole new level of control with Yamaha’s new full manoeuvrability helm master; helping customers be more confident in their docking abilities and understanding their boat control system. Our favourite Grady-White resident, Eric Sorenson came out from the US to give tips on how to handle and dock your boat confidently; while Alex, the owner of Fishing Station - Sydney’s Premier Fishing and Tackle Store, demonstrated how to rig your rod to catch the biggest and best fish, and tips on where to find them and when. And lastly, a Short Marine special Service and Maintenance workshop to coach customers on the best practices when it comes to looking after their boat.

Is your AC Heat Pump ready for the winter? Well we go over what we do to keep our heat pump going strong in the winter and avoid costly repairs when that big freeze come. It's cold outside! Well hear are some things that will help improve the efficiency of your heat pump. Also keep you AC in great health for when warmth come back to town. Before it gets to cold outside, need to clear most of the water from the drain pipe. This keep growth in the pipe down, and it less likely to freeze in the winter. There are two ways we keep our AC drain clear, we either blow or suck. To blow the water out you are going to need a compressor, suck a wet dry vac. For all steps use video links below for further details. If you want to use you compressor, your drain pipe has to have a check point. If install this is close to the AC and always above the water line. To blow the water out of the pipe, please go to this point in the video. Sucking the water out may be easier and cheaper. I would not say everyone has a shop- vac, but for us, we have never not had one. So for this you simply just suck the water and gunk out of the pipe. Only use a vacuum that can be used in wet conditions. Now that you have cleared the pipe, need to add something to help kill any growth. Most of the time I use either bleach or water. If you live in a place that freezes and your line will hold water, you probably want to add some antifreeze to the line. The make this for things like RVs and Pool Systems, just make sure you use something that is safe for the environment. The last thing we do and something I like to do every quarter is spray out or AC compressor outside. This mostly helps the efficiency of your unit and to prevent damage. We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. Sometimes as many as 6 tools could be used for something like this, but oftentimes it's 3 or 4. The chainsaw is a wonderful tool for freeform shaping... it removes a lot of material, and the small chainsaw Steve uses here is easy to control. It does get awfully warm as it goes through the bone-dry oak, which means the chain expands and gets a little loose on its bar, but we're sure everyone in the comments section will already know that and won't say a dingdang thing. ;) NBC's Today Show came to film us, and we show you a bit of how that looked and felt for the crew. In the last film we have been in the mainland Panama in Linton Bay, doing a lot of repairs, mainly on engine, doing some necessary maintenance and doing provisioning. In this film we came back to San Blas (Kuna Yala) and you’ll see how we live from the sea when we’re at least 2 days away from the nearest supermarket. We stocked up with all essentials for the next 3 months - flour, sugar, pasta, oil etc. Nearly every week comes a supply boat from the mainland. They bring us fresh fruits, vegetables, bear, cheese, butter, eggs. Snorkeling, hunting, baking bread - these are our everyday activity. Highlights of seafood recipes - Cazuela de mariscos and ceviche. The best part of the cruising life - gathering together, cooking together and eating together - especially with out good friends SY Victoria. Beach barbecue with Plucky from Sailing for Freedom. There is a rainy season now, but it is not really bad - sometimes it’s rainy, but most of the time the weather is very nice, just not enough wind. On San Blas we started separating garbage - organic parts goes to the sea, fish like it. All paper and partly plastic we burn. The rest - beer cans, bottles, plastic bottles we keep and later will bring back to the mainland. In the end of the film you’ll be astonished (as we were astonished too) we went to Nargana island to the hospital. Just imagine, in the middle of the nowhere there is a hospital with a very good equipped dentist practice. Actually, we want to sail to Almerimar to get Dilly-Dally ready for the Atlantic. But as the autopilot completely stops working on the journey along the Spanish coast, we first head for Cartagena. A decision we don't regret. There are boat chandlers, craftsmen and a boatyard that seems to have expert staff. At least the electrician who comes on board has a direct insight into what is wrong with us. He can also repair the motor of our autopilot. In addition, we finally get a replacement for the hot water boiler that rusted through in Sardinia. And we decide to replace the batteries. We convert to lithium. We use the time to do other work. Engine inspection, replacing gaskets, changing hoses and valves, checking the steering wires. The list seems endless.
