It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. These portable diving systems are battery-powered, custom-designed compressors that float right behind you.The main unit floats on the surface while you dive underwater. Inside the unit there is a custom battery powered air compressor which pumps air to the diver through the air hose and out through the smart regulator. It saves battery life by monitoring breathing patterns to allow the compressor to know exactly when it needs to send air. They’re lightweight, compact and even airplane friendly. In this video we are using the Nemo - which allows you to dive to a depth of 10 feet for between 60-90minutes. The company also sells a model called the Nomad - which allows you to dive to a depth of 30feet for between 45-60minutes. The Nemo is currently on special offer as they’re phasing it out so you only have another month or 2 to get your hands on this model. After this they’re bringing out a new model the Nomad mini combining the best features of the Nemo & Nomad. These systems are extremely useful onboard your boat, not only for enjoying the underwater world around you, but also to aid with never ending boat maintenance! For example - it has totally transformed our hull cleaning, making the process so much faster. We managed to clean the whole of our 66 foot hull in just one go with the Nemo! They are perfect for enabling you to perform any underwater jobs that need doing - eg changing anodes, de-blocking thru hulls, servicing or removing the propeller - which you may remember Timo having to do whilst free-diving in the past! And are ideal for to helping you to remove any nets or anything that gets caught in the propeller or around the rudder, or to check for any issues with the rudder, the seal of the keel or to carefully inspect the rest of the underwater part of your hull for any damage - this is especially useful in tropical areas when surrounded by coral! With this equipment onboard you also have the potential to be able to go down to unblock your anchor if it gets caught! Being able to perform these tasks underwater can potentially save you hundreds in haul out fees. They also take up much less space than scuba equipment and don’t need refilling with air. Episode 033 Since moving onboard our sailing boat, Te Tāiko, we have experienced many adverse weather events in New Zealand in the span of 18 months. There have been so many of these events that we haven’t filmed all of them. We have spent a lot of time hiding from strong winds, storms, and bad weather. We've experienced up to 60 knots of wind in an anchorage and up to 50 knots plus in the marina. Little did we know that the worst was yet to come. We had just gone through a squash zone (the bit between a high and a low pressure system) when Adam noticed the possibility of a cyclone forming in the tropics. This cyclone was soon called Cyclone Gabrielle. We now had some decisions to make and prepare Tāiko and us for Cyclone Gabrielle. What we didn’t expect was the devastating impact Gabrielle was going to have on our home town of Hawke’s Bay and the East Coast of New Zealand. After seeing the devastation caused to Hawke's Bay, emotionally this was a very hard video for us to put together and we hope you can see the love we have for the East Coast of New Zealand. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages. With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. Stephen on the other hand has been familiar with it since childhood. Live Oaks with mysterious curved branches dripping with Spanish moss. Salt air worn creek homes. Tidal floating docks full of fishing supplies and crab pots. Open marshes stretching as far as the eye can see. Tidal creeks that are “now you see them, now you don’t” with our 6 ft average tides. Salt water preserved driftwood trees. Palmettos mixed in here and there. In the months that have an R in them, September through April, you can even harvest your own oysters in public beds - enough for personal use for the evenings appetizers. Usually viewable at mid-tide, healthy oyster banks can sometimes be seen spitting as they filter the water of algae. It’s a sight to behold. The ability to just stop and watch the wildlife is a true treasure. Marsh Hens bathing in the marsh. Fiddler crabs doing their thing. Of course, we can’t forget the dolphins, everyones’ favorite. The Kiawah/Seabrook Island SC area is one of the few places they can be seen strand feeding - coraling the fish towards shore, so they can feast. And then there are the uninhabited marsh islands. Hundreds of them. Often protected habitats and preserves, these islands are often available for hiking and are the perfect place to experience nature at its most untouched. Fenwick Island is just one example. Many of these islands used to be inhabited, mostly for farming, but times changed. The area around the North Edisto River is a treat for all those who appreciate the life and the beauty of the marsh. It is “Where the Crawdads Sing" the phrase that Delia Owens' own mother used to say while she was growing up, which means a place that is far from modern society, or to depart into nature. And just like the story of the Marsh Girl Kya, it is only by understanding the nature of low country and the ebb and flow of the tides - can one truly appreciate the laws of nature. In the marsh, sometimes you can feel so invisible you wonder if you are there at all. The only constant in nature is change. The marsh was our secret. The marsh knows all about death and doesn’t necessarily define it as a tragedy. The descendants of this country’s earliest residents are fun to watch - birds like herons, egrets, spoonbills and storks, snakes, armadillos, and of course the alligator. And the ocean. Unpredictable and full of life. An afternoon sailing shows the true power of wind, water and waves and earns it the respect of all who venture out. Catching a glimpse of a shrimp boat on the horizon is something not to miss. And what better way to enjoy it than quietly paddleboarding (with the current) in the river. And catching a fish for your dinner. Sailing to forgotten island on Myanmar boarder We sailed our live aboard catamaran north, up the Andaman coast, to Thailands best kept secret...Koh Phayam, right up on the boarder with Myanmar (Burma). Our sailboat came with a staysail that included a boom. Our preference though, is to keep our foredeck space clear and open so when we headed out to go sailing, we left the boom behind. To make our staysail work "boomless", we rig a temporary sheeting system, go for a test sail, and observe how well the sail behaves. We discover that the staysail works just fine without the boom. Of course, the boat would sail marginally better if the boom were in place, but we're just fine with a slight performance decrease in exchange for maintaining our open deck space. Then there's the added benefit of removing the possibility of being clobbered by a swinging boom on the foredeck. This was coming from our upper deck - through the ceiling panels and making it's way out on the side of the panel. After investigating, we determined that the water was coming in from the genoa tracks on our upper deck. We noticed staining from under the track one day while sailing. Upon removing our ceiling panels, we discovered staining on the underside of the panels as well. Watch as we undertake the fix for this issue - with what we felt was the right way. Appears that this was an issue before, but it had never been fixed properly. Special thanks to West Marine on Savannah highway for their extensive Epoxy knowledge sharing. Uzun süredir peşimizi bırakmayan bakım onarım işleri yavaş yavaş bizim de modumuzu düşürmeye başladı. Keyfimiz yerine gelsin diye Grenadin'leri gezerken çok kritik bir durum olmadığı sürece elimizi hiç bir işe sürmemeye karar verdik. Bequia adasından Canouan adasına geçerken ana yelken mandarı yine makarada sıkıştı ve kesmek zorunda kaldık. Bir daha da ana yelken açmadık. Bir kaç gün içerisinde heyecanla beklediğimiz Tobago Cays'e ulaştık. Sabahtan akşama kaplumbağa ve manta kovalayıp turkuaz denizin keyfini sürdük. Oradan Union Adası'na geçip biraz da yerel halkla takıldıktan sonra Ömer Öcel, 'yetti bana bu kadar deniz, kum, güneş' deyince soluğu Carriacou Adası'nda aldık. Bu arada Mindelo Marina'da tanıştığımız Steve'in muhteşem teknesi Island Packet'ı sizin için gezdik. Serisinin son üretimi teknenin hem yelken donanımına hem de iç yerleşimine ve de sağlamlığına hayran kaldık. Burası doğası ve insanıyla tam bize göre bir yer çıktı.
