Durante la semana Santa he hecho las siguientes reparaciones: - Desde siempre había notado que el AIS no me funcionaba bien, ya que la máxima distancia de los barcos que veía eran unas 5 millas, por fin con la ayuda de un vecino nos pusimos a cambiar la antena y el cable, no os imagináis cómo estaba el conector de la antena! - Motor I: Después de arreglar el turbo comprobé que el barco andaba bien pero no subía de vueltas, pues bien, no sé por qué, pero ya sube de vueltas perfectamente. Os enseño las curvas de consumo y de par en las que me baso para tener consumos óptimos - Motor II: dado lo peligroso que es quedarse sin flujo de agua salada, investigo cómo mejorar este tema para poner al barco alarmas de exceso de temperatura en codo escape y en liquido refrigerante - Monitor de baterías: me hago un nuevo dispositivo ESPHOME, integrable con Home Assistant, para monitorizar las baterías. Os lo muestro instalado y funcionando. - Por último, tenía estropeado el aforador del gasoil. Lo he desmontado e instalado un nuevo conectado con el sistema Victron Cerbo GX. This week’s video resumes in the Dry Tortugas, where we’re stuck on finding a solution for installing our auto helm. But that can wait…first, fishing! Our bait attracted a few good-sized Nurse Sharks and Goliath Groupers, putting on quite the show for Akiva! The Nurse Sharks are gentle, but they’re still a bit disconcerting to see right under the boat. Another “must do” activity on the Dry Tortugas is visiting Fort Jefferson, which—after a week in the park—we still hadn’t done. We put shoes on for the first time in days, and ventured into the centuries-old fort. There is so much history in Fort Jefferson, even though the fort never saw battle. We could have stayed in the Dry Tortugas forever, but we had to get back to Key West to meet up with Doug from SV Seeker. We worked out a potential solution for installing our auto helm, but we need access to Doug’s floating metal shop in order to fabricate a stainless steel bracket to use as a mount. First, we needed to countersink two of the lag bolts on the boomkin so the bracket can be installed perfectly flush. Then, I marked up the piece of stainless, and headed back to SV Seeker where Doug’s portable handheld band saw, plasma cutter, and array of metalworking tools help us bring our vision to fruition. We even factored a bow roller into the design for more ease in launching our stern anchor—bonus! We never expected to be working on Arabella, on SV Seeker! The piece fits perfectly (after a little refinement with the angle grinder) and the autopilot works perfectly! The auto helm is going to open a lot of doors for us. We have some big miles to get back north for the summer, and having the autopilot will make the long passages a lot easier to manage. Amazing teamwork this week! In this episode of Sailing Banana Pancakes, we wrap up our unforgettable time in Martinique, start major sailboat repairs, and head off on an epic sail toward Grenada—complete with a dolphin encounter that blew our minds! After spending weeks sailing through the Caribbean, Martinique gave us a chance to slow down and focus on the nitty-gritty of boat life—maintenance, repairs, and the daily reality of living full-time aboard a sailboat as a family of six. Life on a Sailboat Isn’t Always Paradise—Sometimes It’s Scrubbing Rust Until Your Hands Bleed With Malia off the boat that day, Steve and I (Kami) had to dock the boat without her. Tight squeeze between two other vessels—but Steve handled it like a pro. Once safely docked, the real work began. We dove headfirst into boat projects. Steve tackled the big stuff—fixing the engines, the rigging, and diagnosing all the electrical issues. Meanwhile, the kids pitched in big time. Our boys took over scrubbing the hull and deck, getting rid of built-up rust and grime. Easton went so hard his hands literally started to bleed. The commitment was real. While the guys handled the boat’s exterior, I kept things going inside—homeschooling the kids, meal prepping, and organizing our floating home to stay sane in the chaos. It’s not always glamorous, but this is what real family sailing looks like—everyone pitching in, learning responsibility, and growing stronger together. We Got Contacted by a Reality TV Producer… Seriously Amidst the chaos of repairs, something totally unexpected happened—we were contacted by a reality TV producer who had been following our journey along with a few other sailing families. They were interested in putting together a show based on real families living the cruising lifestyle, raising kids while exploring the world on sailboats. The producer interviewed all of us—Steve and I, the boys, Malia, and even a few other sailing families. It was wild to see how our story resonated. They created a reel and pitched it to a network. In the end, it didn’t get picked up, but the experience was surreal and honestly kind of magical. We especially loved hearing our kids’ thoughts during the interviews—unfiltered, honest, and full of heart. Just another reminder that this journey is shaping all of us in beautiful ways. The Reality of Boat Repairs (Still Not Done) Between interviews, we kept chipping away at the never-ending list of repairs. From engine issues to wiring frustrations, nothing gets resolved quickly on a boat. But we made serious progress, and even had time to socialize—because cruising life isn’t just about fixing stuff. We met new friends, Rob and Shelly, and shared dinner and stories ashore. Our kids got invited aboard a neighbor’s monohull sailboat that had an entire gaming setup inside—it was heaven for them. We love seeing them make friends from all over the world and adapt to this unconventional lifestyle. Steve’s friend Kasey also flew in to tour a boat—after watching our adventure unfold for the past year, his family decided to take the leap too. There’s something special about inspiring others to chase their wild dreams, and it reminded us why we share our journey in the first place. Casting Off from Martinique | Tight Dock Maneuvering and a Golden Sail to Grenada Eventually, it was time to say goodbye to Martinique and get back on the water. But pulling away from the dock was nerve-wracking—our catamaran was sandwiched between two other boats with barely a sliver of space to spare. Steve maneuvered like a total legend and got us out clean. We anchored on a mooring ball for the night, soaking in one last Caribbean sunset before an early departure. At sunrise, we hoisted the sails and pointed our bows toward Grenada. The conditions were perfect—calm seas, steady winds, and stunning views. As we sailed past the iconic Pitons of St. Lucia, the beauty of the Caribbean coastline left us speechless. But then it got even better… DOLPHINS! A Whole Pod Joins the Journey Suddenly, out of nowhere, an enormous pod of dolphins appeared beside our boat. It wasn’t just a few—it was a full-on dolphin family, leaping and gliding right next to us, riding our bow for what felt like forever. It was one of those moments that made everything—every repair, every hard day, every long night—absolutely worth it. Just pure magic on the open sea. What This Journey Means to Us This episode is a true slice of our liveaboard family sailing life—the highs, the lows, and the stuff in between. After a week of chasing horizon lines through the Sea of Cortez, we finally found ourselves dropping anchor in the remote and rugged paradise of Agua Verde, Baja California Sur — a place where time slows down and the mountains meet the sea in perfect harmony. I had written Ibiza off—too touristy, too loud, too crowded. But this stop reminded me how important it is to let go of assumptions. Sailing into Ibiza in the off-season, I found quiet corners, golden light, and a slower rhythm that made me see the island in a whole new way. In this episode, we sail Arabella over to the clear, blue waters of the Dry Tortugas National Park, 70 miles west of Key West. Starting from the Ten Thousand Islands, we hit Key West for provisions, hot showers, and to pick up the parts we need to get our auto helm installed. It was a whirlwind stop—less than 24 hours, and it was time to get going for an overnight sail to the Dry Tortugas. The sail to the Dry Tortugas was magnificent, with a steady 10–15 knots pushing us right to the country’s least-visited national park. As we approached Fort Jefferson, we were grateful to get hailed on the radio by a fan with some helpful information about anchoring in the Dry Tortugas. In the Dry Tortugas, the sound of nesting brown and black noddies, terns, and migrating Magnificent Frigate birds made for some soothing white noise, while the hermit crabs on land gave Robin a real delight. We anchored on the west side of Fort Jefferson, where we had plenty of privacy and easy access to shore. The snorkeling in the Dry Tortugas was second to none. First, we took Victoria over to Bird Key for some creative snorkeling—with such a strong current, we decided to stay tethered to the tender while floating the current on a paddleboard. Then we spent time over at Loggerhead Key snorkeling Africa Reef, which was abundant with marine life. We saw barracuda, about a million tropical fish, neon-colored coral, and even a spiny Florida lobster! With shifting winds, we decided to move the boat over to the east side of Fort Jefferson, where the anchorage was much more lively. Seaplanes come and go, the ferry arrives like clockwork, and… Goliath Groupers visit Arabella with regularity. The sunsets on the Dry Tortugas were so mesmerizing, that even Akiva took to lying on the side deck to take them in ;-) Being in such clear, clean water makes it a perfect time to get our Spectra water maker back online. The water maker has been offline since we were docked in Harwichport last winter. There are no resources in the Dry Tortugas—no water, food, or fuel—so getting the water maker back online allowed us to extend our stay in this tropical paradise, without worrying about staying hydrated. Another big project that we’ve been stuck on is the auto-helm. We tried to get this installed back in Boothbay before heading south for the winter, but didn’t have the right parts. While it was discouraging to realize that we STILL didn’t have what we needed to get the auto helm installed…we DID come up with a plan, and it’s a good one that requires a little help from a friend. ** NOW SOLD ** ‘Sansouci’ is a Hallberg-Rassy 41. Launched in 1977, this is a classic model from one of the most highly respected cruising brands. This is a practical and comfortable two cabin layout with master cabin aft, large saloon and two heads. Space below deck is impressive with standing head room throughout including the passage to the aft cabin. The centre cockpit is safe, well protected, and is of course a signature of the worldclass Swedish yard. The ketch rig allows for maximum flexibility and safety while the extended bow sprit allows for the large furling genoa and furling inner-jib. Notably, this is not a full teak deck yacht – a massive advantage meaning less maintenance and issues going forward while giving the yacht a clean modern deck. Much of the electronics and navigation equipment has been updated with the switchboards fully rewired. The B&G plotter was installed new in 2020. There is auto-pilot and AIS. Solar panels both mounted on the davits and on the coach roof keep the large battery bank topped up plus there is a portable generator securely stowed on deck. The RIB neatly stows on the davits. There is a tunnel bow thruster. New cockpit covers with bimini and dodger completely protect the cockpit. These were installed new in Just 2024 by one of the most well-respected marine trimmers in Sydney, Shane Beashel. This is a proper cruising yacht with encapsulated keel, skeg rudder, shaft drive engine, and a rig to match. Sansouci has been well kept and regularly slipped. She would suit those seeking a quality blue water cruising yacht crafted by probably the most respected cruising yacht brand ever, or simply a comfortable live-aboard that simply looks right.
