The clock is ticking, and we need both canoes finished for the hulls so that we can start assembling this catamaran! So, come join Captain Blood, Admiral Marianne, and our XO Brian as we build our dream boat, a Schionning Designs Solitaire 1520. Boat maintenance is essential and part of that is doing an engine flush every two years and we also installed a desiccant fuel filter to prevent moisture from building up in the half empty fuel tanks. We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. Hopefully, you will be as BLOWN AWAY from watching, as we are in experiencing and producing our adventures! HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT US? Troubleshooting marine electrical systems is a lot of trial and error with voltmeters and other gadgets, and for this round of experimentation we've got the guy who wrote the book. Nigel Calder is a cruiser, boat owner, educator, and author who wrote "Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual", a book that's been aboard may liveaboard and cruising boat owner's shelves. For wonderfully clear and helpful learning about 12 V marine electrical, marine diesel engines, and other boat systems, visit https://boathowto.com/ and Nigel can help you out, too. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. This video shows how to calculate the number of shackles to be dropped when dropping a ship's anchor. It includes determining the number of shackles that have been dropped by reading the markings on the anchor chain. The calculations are just a reference. There are other methods of calculations and you can use the method you are familiar with. A ship's anchor is a heavy device typically made of metal that is used to secure a vessel in place by gripping the seabed. Anchors are crucial maritime equipment for ships of all sizes, ranging from small boats to large ocean-going vessels. They are essential for various maritime operations, including anchoring in ports, harbors, and offshore locations, as well as during emergency situations or when conducting maintenance activities. #maritime #seafarer #seaman #bsmt #maritimestudents

#catamaransailing #leopard48catamaran #sailing Antigua here we come! 1700 miles in 12 days of pure ocean sailing. Pilar and crew left the Hampton dock at Blue Water Marina at 4 AM November 2 to catch the outgoing tide. We navigated our way out of the Chesapeake Bay harbor in the dark of course. Surprisingly for such a busy harbor, there were unmarked bouys we had to spotlight. Waters were rougher than we had planned. But we were glad to be on our way. Our previous departure window of 10/28 had been delayed and we had been watching for the best weather window to cross the gulf stream and sail east as far as possible in order to be in the right position to pick up the trade winds south of Bermuda. We had about a day delay in the "parking lot" as many rally members called it, waiting out Hurricane Tammy that was dissipating in the Bermuda area. Gulf stream crossing was actually some of the calmest water of our entire trip. Fish caught include Mahi and Wahoo. We hit the trade winds Thursday around 430 PM. From then on, it was pedal to the medal sailing. 20-25 knot winds between 60-90 degrees off the wind. Constant speeds around 9-10 knots until we hit the Antigua harbor. With this trip, the crew on PILAR have all achieved Ocean Status as sailors. 88 RV Reno part 5- Big Reveal, before and after! We are finally ready to hit the road now that we have completed our RV renovation. We have made so many changes that it’s hard to remember what she looked like when we first got her. It’s fun to see the before pictures and remember where we started. The Safari Trek was well built and the previous owners took really good care, so all we needed to do was add some modern updates with a few create comforts to make her shine. Exploring Canada! This week we experiment many things for the first time and we got to hang out with some of our favorite people. Friends in this episode: @MJSailing @brnklio We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). The last season has been a dream coming true… we are exploring the Brazilian coast with OUR BOAT that we called Odd.. But wait? What happened to the house? Check out our website to know more about it https://www.oddlifecrafting.com/blog We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. Episode 037 Skipper makes a sudden decision for us to haul out to fix two major problems we've had on Tāiko. Our autopilot suddenly stopped working over Easter weekend when we picked our friend up only to find the pin holding the autopilot to ram had sheared in half with one half stuck in the quadrant. Despite our efforts, we were unable to remove the stuck piece which resulted in us having to haul out and becoming an expensive issue for us. Why did this happen? Well, it's a long 18 month old story and needing to haul out meant we had to address another major issue that has been worrying us. Very frustrating for us but we do get there with the ongoing support and help of our good friends Garth and Elizabeth from Fisheye Fabrication, Opua in the Bay of Islands. Thank you both so much! We hope you enjoy it! As always, thanks for watching. Sincere thanks to Charlotte Rockstar Jones for composing and recording Te Tāiko's theme song. After a few years of studying and working hard we decided it was time to make a change. We needed a change that would allow us to spend more time together, give us a better work/life balance, and the freedom to travel. While we still had time on our side, we wanted to use it to live rather than use it to chase money. Learning to sail was the answer. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages. With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. In the meantime, follow along with us as we navigate this new lifestyle whilst sharpening our skills exploring New Zealand waters. #boatlife #boat #travelvlog #digitalnomad #lifestyle #sailing #travel

Last day for international shipping to get to you in good time is December 6, and a package shipped this week might get to you before Hanukkah's over. Last day for continental US shipping for Christmas and other holidays around then is December 16. And of course, we can't make guarantees, but we'll ship it out quick as we can and hope for the best. This week, Steve installs the Shipmate marine wood stove aboard his DIY wooden boat, because the days are getting colder in Maine. Marine wood stoves keep the interiors of wooden boats (and all cruising boats for that matter) dry and warm. This Shipmate wood stove can burn pretty much any solid fuel, but it was designed to burn coal. Some people wonder about having a fire on a boat when we're under way... but that's what the diesel heater is for. Next week we'll be doing marine electrical with Nigel Calder! -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! In this episode, I am sharing my experience and knowledge of handling my Bavaria 55 mass-production yacht safely through a violent storm. It’s a big difference between racing and being on a long distance sail in remote places. Some might jump to conclusions thats wrong. This is a defensive way of sailing in winds above 55 kts and preparation for above 60. I have a huge responsibility as people watching can and often will copy my strategy. Hence the fact this is not bragging or over selling. It’s realistic and safety in mind m. This is a more technical video where I reveal my strategies in real-life heavy-weather sailing. We are talking above 55+ knots of wind where things really starts to happen. My strategies with a storm sail and reefed Main has proven to work above 60 knots of wind. The last episode I was not rigged with storm sail as it was not predicted. So I’m showing the limitations and what I did when seeing 57. Not knowing how much it was going to be, I took a break to decide next move. If it was going to reach 60 I would have to either continue with my safety mode, or go with reef 3 only, meaning going up against the wind to get Main up with my violent storm reef. Without telling you how to, I am sharing how I do. This might not work for you or even with your boat. And this is my point. I recommend knowing not only your own limitations but even your boat's limitations. I even share why a heaving to strategy could be the fast track to send your rig into the ocean. The same goes for a furling genoa. This does have some limitations and can be dangerous. Lots of dismasting incidents occur for some obvious reasons but are somehow rarely talked about. Human error leading to serious problems is often mistaken for poor quality, and very popular to point at production yachts instead of looking in the mirror. Lots of myths false information, and even dangerous advice. Not all strategies work on all boats. Different sizes and hull designs often give different results. If I did not know my boat's limitations, if I had not been on top of maintenance, and even having experience my rigg would come down. This is key to understanding sailing safely and surviving a violent storm. Hopefully, some will find this valuable and even point some of you in a new direction learning more about how to deal with situations on your own. As normal I do not claim to have the blueprint, and nor do I say this is how to. I'm sharing what's proven to work for me. I am even pointing out the biggest and most frequent misunderstanding. A cutter stay is good but not the best solution for heavy-weather sailing either. Unless you only have a small storm jib there for above 50 kt sailing. I still have not met anyone with this permanently, instead, they have slightly smaller genoa mostly used to fly wing on wing. Meaning we would have the exact same challenge. Changing sails is my biggest challenge alone at sea, and this means my violent storm solution does have an Achilles heel. I can not handle a violent storm as I want to if not planned. So what I share is the consequence of a weather prediction turning out to be seriously out of target. European models on predictions are normally extremely good. However local phenomenon can sometimes be missed. A storm jib in a bag attached works fine, but my experience is it can not be furled in. So as a solo sailor with a storm jib thats not possible to furle create another challenge. What to do when it reach 75. Even though this is season 6 on YouTube I did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I sailed several seasons in the Mediterranean prior to, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and have also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing ever since. #Amelyacht #ErodexUK #leroysomer #SailingLife #BoatRepairs #MarineElectricity #DIYBoatProjects #ElectricMotorRepair #OceanAdventures #BoatLife #MarineTechnology #OffGridLiving #SailingTech #boatmaintenance Our in-mast furling system wraps the mainsail around a 'foil' inside a hollow mast using a motor mounted on the mast. It is unfurled by an outhaul furler mounted on the boom. But they DO need cleaning and servicing periodically. Electric 'brushed' motors can become clogged with carbon deposits and the brushes themselves can wear down or simply break. I simple clean and brush replacement can add years to the life of an electric motor. Thanks to ErodexUK (formally ECP) for sourcing the right brushes. Brushless motors, which do not use brushes, have become more popular in many modern applications due to their improved efficiency and reliability.. but not on our boat! If you're a professional, expert or even an old salty sea dog with some good advice on how to service electric motors or in-mast furling systems, then please leave any constructive criticism, insight and advice in the comments below the videos.
