After spending two rolly nights in Hugh Town, Isles of Scilly we leave the harbour for the 1200NM passage to Ponta Delgada, Azores. It is always a little nerve-wracking to set off on a long passage. You hope you have thought of everything. We do a lot of pre-passage checks on board as well as keeping up with the maintenance. The provisioning was all done for 2 to 3 weeks (the estimated passage length plus 50%) and we were ready to go. This is part 1 of 2 videos. They are quite long as we were at sea for fourteen wonderful days. *Thank You to all of you who support us in your different ways* ❤️ Please SUBSCRIBE, LIKE, and COMMENT as it really helps the channel and we love to hear from you😁😁 ➡️➡️ *FOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM:* https://www.instagram.com/sailingnovavita/ ➡️➡️ *SEE OUR FACEBOOK PAGE:* https://www.facebook.com/SailingNovaVita ⬇⬇⬇⬇ *CLICK THE LINKS* to learn about the ESSENTIAL gear we use 😁⬇⬇⬇⬇ As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. Because every piece of gear seems to be getting design upgrades, sensors and apps. We made our way to the biggest show in technology when it comes to all things maritime, the Metstrade in Amsterdam. It's like the CES of the boating world and it did not disappoint! And despite our best efforts, we didn't get to explore everything we wanted to. But, that's only because there was sooo much to dive into. There are new innovations in just about every single area you can think of. We found new discoveries in lightning protection, anchor monitoring, anchoring, rigging, and even sensors that can tell you when it might be time to replace your rigging.🤯 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of explorers, modern-day documentarians, and cultivators of curiosity. We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us. Things We're Most Curious About... GETTING OFF-GRID Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. So self-reliance and sustainable living are a must. We've learned heaps about renewable energy, managing waste, creating safe drinking water and foraging for food. We carefully manage our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so. TALKING TO STRANGERS People are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen. It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection. Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment. Which is why these are our most treasured experiences. Setting off into the world with curiosity as our guide and nature as our compass. We talk to strangers and accept hospitality without fear or reservations. Both giving and receiving. ALTERNATIVE LIVING These are people who are doing things differently. Forgoing the mainstream, seeking freedom and living on the margins. Creative, unique and inspiring people who challenge our ideas of home and community. One of the biggest and costliest project in many yacht refits is new batteries. These days, most battery changes are by people moving from standard AGMs to Lithium, or making the change to a higher native voltage from 12v to 24v or 48v. We are making the change to a native 48v system and increasing the storage capacity to 55kwh in an effort to increase our cruising independence. Commercial marine batteries tend to come in standard sizes and are limited to 100ah or 200ah. Going the traditional route would require us to expand the space that holds by batteries by double or triple the physical space. Instead, we've opted to assemble the batteries ourselves, allowing us to choose the total voltage and capacity with a lot more flexibility. We imported CALB cells directly from China, and are doing the work to DIY our battery bank. In the end, we will get significantly more storage into a smaller space, for about 1/3 of the price. This is part one of the process. When we finish showing the entire process, we'll provide a dedicated page on our website with all the nitty, gritty details including the entire planning and importation process as well as the installation. That can be found at www.sailingroam.com. Music by Epidemic Sound. https://www.epidemicsound.com https://sailingroam.com/ ☝More about us, our adventures, and how we do all this on our website. 2005 26’ Express Cruiser 4 Winns 268 The best in class for available room, layout, value for your dollar in a 25-28 ft. single engine cruiser. This is 4 Winns most popular boat and is a “pocket cruiser” perfect for day cruising, watersports, fishing, and overnight cruising and is known to be a lot of boat for the money. For this owner it has been a perfect catalina trip boat cruises 14-20 knots out to Catalina towing a dinghy. Features: Mercruiser v8 engine model 496 MAG FWC (fresh water cooled) 375 HP with outdrives and counter-propeller 6’2” headroom Trailerable Day bed convertible from table Enclosed cockpit with helm station Stainless steel railing propane grill Full bath wet head with marine toilet Sleeps 4 (v birth table converts to bed) Air conditioning and microwave Perfect boat for a trip to Catalina with the exterior entertaining/relaxing space and full head. The owner shares a few great insights after owning this boat for 8 years: 1. Critical to have marine toilet instructions in the bathroom. This will help others who may not know to know the process and rules of using a marine toilet. 2. To keep maintenance down does the work himself: Has been low cost other than the slip fee and bottom cleaning. 3. This boat has a somewhat narrow beam reducing the stability and comfort of the ride 4. Excellent for towing a center console dinghy. 5. The mercruiser outdrive does not turn as easily as others

This week, Arabella slows down and cruises through the Great Dismal Swamp, navigating her first lock—the Deep Creek Lock—and leaving a small reminder that they were there ;-) After a provisioning run at the local Food Lion, Steve and Robin venture deeper into the Great Dismal Swamp, which—despite its name—is both serene and esoteric. Its history dates back to the 1700s, when the canal was dug by hand using slave labor, giving Steve and Robin pause to reflect on this history. While a visit to Waffle House wasn’t on the itinerary, Steve, Robin and Akiva found time for an an exploration mission down the feeder ditch and into Lake Drummond. Cypress trees are a new fauna for the crew, and they enjoy motoring around their wild trunks. Passing through the Great Dismal Swamp Visitor center, Arabella ends up in the Harbor of Hospitality: Elizabeth City, NC. They shop around downtown, exploring some adorable boutiques and perusing the South’s largest collection of rolling pins! On Christmas Day, Arabella sets sail across the Albemarle Sound and into the Alligator River, where the forecast does not deliver on its promises. The anchorage proves much too choppy for a comfortable night’s stay, and Steve and Robin have no choice but to head into the Pungo Canal and cross their fingers for a safe place to drop the hook. Steve has an idea, and sets off in Victoria to bring his vision to life…but, while turning Arabella around, Robin runs her aground—and this time, they’re really stuck. However, Steve is (kinda) excited to kedge the boat for the first time. He uses a kedge anchor in combination with an intricate system of lines and pulleys run back to shore to heel Arabella onto her side until she was able to float off the bank and back into deep water. It was a Christmas miracle! -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! In this episode, we tackle a critical fix of our mainsail track. After discovering significant damage that rendered it useless, we had to get creative to keep things functional until we can make it back to the States for a proper replacement. With limited resources and no guarantee our plan would work, it was a true test of ingenuity and problem-solving. Will our makeshift solution work? Join us as we share the process, the challenges, and a few lessons learned along the way. Thank you all so much for your continued support. We really appreciate it! Impeller change. Many neglect the beating heart of sailboat ownership. MAINTAIN YOUR STUFF!!!!!!!!!!
Replacing a 2 year old impeller. The current one was still working fine but it was 2 years old. Basic maintenance is to replace it needed or not every new season. Many people don't maintain or actually neglect the beating heart of a sailboat. (It's Engine). You can sail with out a motor but it is absolutely a needed part of your sailboat. No engine is almost asking for trouble with tidal currents and wind from a wrong direction when traveling the ICW. #youtube #sailing #tampa #youtuber #cruising #shorts

Our last anchorage in Vanuatu has to be one of our most favourites ever because we had a great holding, incredible clear water to see the coral reef , plenty of boat kids to hang out with and a nice venue for the parents...what more could you ask for ? ...and even Woody's dream came true as he got to do some boat maintenance and put the bow thruster prop back on ! After years of being career focused, we decided it was time to shake things up and sought a lifestyle that would provide us with new experiences, humble us, allow us to visit remote locations, and experience new cultures. In 2021, we traded our regular suburban lifestyle for a nomadic one and moved aboard our sailboat, Te Tāiko, a Chico 40. After three years sailing in New Zealand and preparing for Category 1 (regulations for New Zealand registered vessels planning to sail offshore), we set sail from New Zealand to Fiji on the 23 May 2024. This would be Vicki and Tāiko's first ocean passage and Adam's third. We have since sailed to Vanuatu and New Caledonia, where we will be during the cyclone season. We fund our lifestyle by working part time. This sometimes involves returning to New Zealand to help top up the bank account. The other avenue is through our content creation where we document our journey though YouTube videos and our our social media accounts and website. After launching just before Christmas we dove straight into work, assessing what remained unresolved on our Leopard Catamaran after the extensive warranty related haul out, getting her clean and ready to sail. This includes tensioning the rig, assessing collateral damage and showing you the current state of things like the door, mainsail and table. While we appreciate the genuine efforts of people who have helped us on our journey, including certain individuals at both Leopard Catamarans and Robertson & Caine, the last few years have been the worst of our lives. I share some of my current thoughts and opinions as eloquently as I could (keeping in mind this is an emotional subject), frustrated over losing years of our lives to this awful experience after working hard to achieve a dream of sailing the world, and still hoping that our experience affects change that means no other owner goes through something like this, whether publicly as we choose to do or privately as many who've reached out to us have done. I also touch on our 2025 cruising plans, including where we hope to sail our Leopard 45 before the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane season comes around again. Different wind conditions for docking our sailboat using a simple and easy to do mooring system. I always dock in reverse because my crew prefers this way to get in and out of the boat, also to load and unload things easily, and the dog. However maneuvering this boat in reverse without bow thrusters is a bit difficult, and I didn't have the confidence to do it on my own until I came across this system. Now I can easily go on my own and dock at any marina. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK Sailing Marisa makes no warranties, express or implied, about the content of our videos. Farewell, Annapolis. It's time for this handcrafted wooden sailboat to keep cruising South towards warmer weather. After visiting a few quiet anchorages in the Chesapeake, Robin, and Akiva stop for a few days in Seaford to get some "life stuff" done...but not before getting the boat stuck in the mud. Fortunately, "Southern hospitality" is a real thing, and there was no shortage of helping hands to get Akiva to shore and help pass the time waiting for the tide to rise. Planning around tides is tricky business when the days are long, but the daylight is short... Prior to heading into the Dismal Swamp Canal, Steve rigs a 45 lb. Mantus anchor on the stern—or, as he likes to say, he "gave Arabella some brakes." Using a stern anchor will help them safely anchor in tight, congested areas, preventing Arabella from swinging where she shouldn't. After a quick, Christmassy visit to Colonial Williamsburg, Steve and Robin head out of Seaford (at high tide, this time), navigating a very foggy Chesapeake River, and making their way through Norfolk, VA, one of the busiest shipping corridors in the United States and the largest naval base in the world. A few bridges, and voilà...Arabella makes it out of Norfolk and into the Swamp. But more about that next week... Anchored, cummins, jerry cans, screwing, dancing, fuel, diesel. We are still anchored. Started to go out, the engine died and ended up being towed back to the same anchorage we were at previously. Steve has done some diagnostics and we’re making progress on fixing the issue. Using the time to do some DIY, we adjusted the board where we secure our jerry cans. It was lowered to better align with the height of the cans and had to be cut so it would not rub against the turn buckle on one of the shrouds. Karen screwed on bolt protectors so the bolts would not rub on the cans. What do we do at anchor? Bringing in the 2025 new year we reflected on 2024, living in the Florida Keys and are hoping to leave this anchorage soon. We wish all of our subscribers and viewers the very best for 2025.
