We realise we have broken a rule about the distance required between us and the wildlife but we wonder why we were confronted in such an aggressive way. It reminds us of the incident that had happened a few years previously when a 14 year old boy was killed by a power craft while he was checking the anchor. Soon after, we sail across to Huahine and find a beautiful beach where we have perhaps one of our most special encounters with a local there who teaches us how to make coconut bread but mainly brings us all closer together by sharing this very simple experience. Episode 050 We're in Aotea, Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf and so far it's been great. We've so far explored Smokehouse Bay which was just awesome. Our friends have now arrived, it's high tide which means it's time to cruise up a couple of tidal wetlands but we can only cruise up them with Tītī (our dinghy (tender)) at high tide and even then it's shallow. Will we get stuck? Are we about to be up a creek...but with a paddle? Who gets out when you venture into shallow waters? We also stretch the legs with a walk around Kaikoura Island. Back in Granby, Steve spends time supporting his mom and dismantling the last of the boathouse. While in the area, he opens more mail, including some books and lines for the reefing on the main mast. While there’s a pocket of okay-ish weather, Steve works on getting as much work as possible completed on deck and up in the rig. He works on hoisting the sails and tying the lines, and comes up with a clever solution to install the tri-colored running light and wind reader on top of the main mast. Of course, this pocket of weather doesn’t last too long. With Robin away and the rain returning, Steve takes this opportunity to transform the cabin into a workshop. The plan is to assemble as many electronics as possible before they make their way on deck. Crafted with a meticulously maintained Burma teak deck, this vessel is powered by a reliable Nanni Mercedes 72 HP engine, which underwent a thorough overhaul in 2017, and features a three-bladed bronze propeller. #239,✍️ Le « je m’en fous » de notre dernière réparation de dinghy, on peut le dire, n’a pas été très efficace ! Notre malheureuse embarcation fuit toujours ! Six années de tour du monde l’ont pour le moins usée, pourtant il va falloir qu’elle nous tienne encore un peu. Nos amis de Nouvelle Calédonie arrivent, et si nous pouvions leur épargner des bains de pieds à chaque débarquement, nous lui en serions reconnaissants. A nos débuts, chaque départ qui nous séparé des personnes chères à nos cœurs m’affecté, mais avec le temps, je me suis rendu compte, en grand voyage, qu’il n’y a pas d’adieu, seulement des au revoir. En adoptant cette perspective, j’aborde les séparations avec plus d’optimisme et les retrouvailles semblent arriver plus vite. Quatre ans se sont écoulées depuis notre dernière rencontre avec Sophie, une amie de longue date. C'est lors de ces retrouvailles que l'on réalise que la vraie amitié ne réside pas dans le fait d'être constamment ensemble, mais dans celui de se retrouver après une période de séparation, sans que rien ne soit altéré. Nous partageons des valeurs communes, des souvenirs, des blagues. Pour ces dernières, imaginez bien que mon Tchoupi n’est pas en reste pour rattraper le temps perdu en piégeant gentiment celle que nous considérons comme notre petite sœur. Additionnée au temps exceptionnel que nous avons depuis quelques jours, Moorea se prête admirablement à la réception de nos invités. Sa lumière, ses montagnes, sa nature foisonnante, ses couleurs pastelles, tout est émerveillement… Le décor est idéal pour la retraite de notre petite annexe. Comble du hasard, nous faisons l’acquisition de sa remplaçante avec Nicolat Gruet, architecte de Black Lion. Mon cœur est en peine ! Difficile de trouver un mouillage autorisé à Tahiti ! Faudrait il encore que les zones interdites soient délimitées par des balises. Une fois de plus nous avons obligation par les autorités, avec très peu de courtoisie, de quitter notre ancrage ! Et quand, poliment nous demandons, où nous avons le droit de séjourner, la réponse est vague et peu bienveillante. Ceux qui nous connaissent savent combien la Polynésie est importante à notre cœur, savent combien nous aimons profondément ces iles du bout du monde, son peuple, sa culture et ses traditions, mais aujourd’hui mon cœur est en peine ! Moi qui ai toujours défendu la Polynésie, je suis obligée d’admettre avec énormément de tristesse que dans certaines îles, dont la principale, nous ne sommes pas les bienvenues. Déjà, à l’autre bout de la planète, il y quelques années, nous commencions à entendre quelques « rumeurs » sur l’accueil en déclin dans ce paradis ! Comment imaginer un tel changement ? Insensé, je n’y ai jamais crue en défendant avec ferveur mes iles Fa’a’amu où notre fils a fait ses premiers pas. En écrivant ces quelques lignes, j’en ai les larmes aux yeux. Le monde change, et nos iles du bout du monde avec ! Notre vie de nomade, nous l’avons choisi pour découvrir, partager, échanger et apprendre de chacun. Le Respect avec un grand R fait partie de nos valeurs. Respect des pays que nous abordons, respect des peuples que nous côtoyons, respect des us, respect des coutumes. C’est dans cet esprit que nous voyageons, que nous parcourons notre belle planète où nous sommes tous citoyens du monde, mais malheureusement, aujourd’hui, il semble évident que nous ne soyons pas les bienvenues de partout ! Pourtant, j’essaie encore de trouver des excuses à l’ampleur de cette triste réalité. La faute à qui, la faute à quoi ? Aux abus certainement, des uns et des autres. Au manque de respect et à l’évidence, le dernier mot appartient à une élite de bien-pensants qui a le pouvoir de décisions. Alors, nous n’avons d’autres choix que d’accepter les aberrations et nous accommodés tant bien que mal au manque cruel de structures adaptées aux voyageurs. Ces quelques lignes ne sont en aucun cas dédiées à tous nos amis Marquisiens et Polynésiens qui comprendront que ce que nous dénonçons c’est uniquement l’attitude désobligeante de certains qui contribuent à créer une animosité entre locaux et plaisanciers souvent pris pour des parias et surtout ce manque de solution pour les voyageurs avides de découvrir cette belle Polynésie. Cette courte escale à Papeete pour rapprocher Sophie et Tejy de l’aéroport nous a chamboulé. L’évidence face à nous, nous devons nous faire une raison, les voiliers ne sont plus les bienvenus à Tahiti ! Ainsi, nous nous activons à la maintenance de Black Lion. La fin de saison cyclonique approchant, nous pouvons envisager la suite du voyage. Mon capitaine s’essaie à quelques réparations, s’occupe des vidanges moteurs, installe un nouveau panneau solaire…

Next day, we sailed to the Blue Lagoon and took a dock for a couple nights so we could wash the boat in preparation for our guests. The marina had everything you would need. Dock, fuel, water, electric, laundry service, gardens, pool with lounge areas, car rental, taxi and restaurants. You can walk into nearby village for provisions. https://bluelagoon.com While at the dock, of course, Stephen made friends with the local fishermen and scored us some spiny lobsters! After Blue Lagoon, we took a mooring ball at Young Island, a private island resort with 13 acres of tropical gardens and 29 airy cottages to choose from (translation: no air conditioning!) https://youngisland.com/ Fort Duvernette The French built this fort on top of a large volcanic rock near Young island, to defend the town of Calliaqua. We climbed the 225 steps that were carved into the rock to get 360-degree views of the shoreline. What we can’t quite figure out is how they got all of the cannons to the top! There’s always work to be done on a wooden boat, but the cooler temperatures have prevented some of this work from getting done outside. During a window where the weather is finally decent, Steve spends some time tackling projects that need to get done on deck—including rigging the reefing system and downhauls for the main and mizzen sails. The main sail of Arabella has three reefs. A reef essentially shortens the sail, so on days when the wind is strong, the sail area can quickly be reduced. Steve works on finding the permanent solution for this system. Meanwhile, Akiva embraces the new season with a rare nap down below. Now that it’s officially spring, hopefully the warmer weather provides more opportunities for adventure. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig.
