Warmer weather is calling, but Steve and Robin (and even Akiva) can’t forego the opportunity to take a few American Sailing Association (ASA) certification classes with Captain Scott from Bow to Stern Boating. It’s cold—some might even say TOO cold for man overboard drills—but they get through it, and successfully retrieve “Bob” using a variety of different techniques. The ASA certification courses, along with the opportunity to handle sailboats other than Arabella, was incredibly helpful in developing Robin’s skill set and confidence. We highly recommend Bow to Stern Boating for your ASA certification course, your next charter, or just to have some fun sailing on the Neuse. While Steve won’t leave Oriental with a shrimp tour under his belts, he and Robin will both leave with their ASA 101 and ASA 103 certifications—and with an inch of ice in the harbor! Robin escapes to Florida for a work thing, and Annie B. and Jack are granted permission to come aboard. First stop with Annie B. and Jack is Beaufort, but just for a night. The crew needs to keep moving, and the weather forecast—which they gathered using a few different tools, like PredictWind and NOAA—looks good enough, and everyone feels comfortable making a run south to Charleston. This week, the journey resumes as Arabella and crew continue to sail south through North Carolina, heading towards warmer waters. A slower pace of life means an opportunity for some much-needed housekeeping. Steve tackles a clean-out of Arabella’s anchor locker from a quiet anchorage in Goose Creek, washing away the the silty mud they’ve been picking up along their journey south. Bumping their way down the Intracoastal Waterway, Steve and Robin get served a heaping portion of Southern hospitality in the small town of Oriental, NC. There are 3,000 sailboats and 900 people in this quaint oceanside town—the perfect ratio of sailboats to humans, if you ask us. No wonder the locals refer to Oriental as a “Velcro town.” Oriental got its name from a shipwreck. Decades ago, sailing steamer Oriental ran aground near Cape Hatteras, and the nameplate washed ashore in what used to be known as Smith’s Creek. The name “stuck”—back to the whole Velcro town thing—and Smith’s Creek became Oriental. The name “Oriental” led to a legacy of—what else—Chinese dragons. Dragons are everywhere in Oriental… Steve’s college friend, Jeff, joins the adventure for a few days. They take a tour of Oriental’s Natural History Museum, which is filled with relics from the town’s past, and buy some fresh seafood to make crab cakes. The only crew member not interested in Jeff’s famous Maryland crab cakes is Akiva, who is more enamored by Oriental’s many dock cats. After a few days, the “cool wooden boat” at the town dock had garnered quite a bit of attention, and Steve and Robin were approached about getting involved in the annual New Year’s Eve event, which—of course—involved a Chinese dragon run. They were also invited to participate in a sailing event with Bow to Stern Boating. They were honored to accept both invitations. At Bow to Stern, Robin falls in love with the chonkiest bulldog of all time—and the official Morale Officer of the boatyard—Tug. Captain Jim and Captain Scott talk about their experiences living aboard their own sailboats, and give Steve and Robin a tour of their yard, showing off a diverse fleet of boats including lasers, LJs, Catalinas, Sabers, Cape Dorys, Optis, and more. Steve and Robin get to take a Cape Dory out into the Neuse River, experiencing the stark difference between their heavy, wooden beast of a sailboat and a small, light fiberglass sailboat. They were visited by a school of dolphins in the harbor, putting a cherry on top of a perfect day. New Year’s Eve arrives. Steve climbs Arabella’s mast to help string up the “Croaker,” Oriental’s very apropos version of “the Ball.” Robin gets ready to dance in one of the Chinese dragons that will be run out of town, along with the bad luck of 2024. The crowd gathers, banging on pots and pans, and reaching out to touch the dragon for good luck. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. After spending two rolly nights in Hugh Town, Isles of Scilly we leave the harbour for the 1200NM passage to Ponta Delgada, Azores. It is always a little nerve-wracking to set off on a long passage. You hope you have thought of everything. We do a lot of pre-passage checks on board as well as keeping up with the maintenance. The provisioning was all done for 2 to 3 weeks (the estimated passage length plus 50%) and we were ready to go. This is part 1 of 2 videos. Après avoir navigué la baie de Chesapeake on arrive finalement à Norfolk où se trouve le début de l'intracostal (Atlantic Intracostal Waterway), un canal qui longe la côte est américaine jusqu'en Floride. Le canal début avec deux chemins alternatifs: le Dismal Swamp Canal et le Virginia Cut. On hésite longtemps entre les deux en raison de la profondeur et du tirant d'eau de notre voilier. On choisit finalement d'emprunter le Dismal Swamp Canal qui se trouve dans un parc régional. Il comporte deux écluses, une au début et une à la fin, et plusieurs quais gratuits tout au long. On a fait la rencontre de Bret et Marisa (https://www.youtube.com/@Bretandmarisa), un couple dans la vingtaine qui voyage à temps plein sur leur bateau de 32 pieds tout comme nous. Après 3 jours dans le Dismal Swamp Canal on arrive à Elizabeth City en Caroline du Nord. On se fait offrir d'utiliser une machine "DIY" de "fuel polishing" pour filtrer notre diesel. On explore le musée et on fait des commissions avant de reprendre la route le lendemain. On traverse le Albemarle Sound à la voile avec une météo parfaite. One of the biggest and costliest project in many yacht refits is new batteries. These days, most battery changes are by people moving from standard AGMs to Lithium, or making the change to a higher native voltage from 12v to 24v or 48v. We are making the change to a native 48v system and increasing the storage capacity to 55kwh in an effort to increase our cruising independence. Commercial marine batteries tend to come in standard sizes and are limited to 100ah or 200ah. Going the traditional route would require us to expand the space that holds by batteries by double or triple the physical space. Instead, we've opted to assemble the batteries ourselves, allowing us to choose the total voltage and capacity with a lot more flexibility. We imported CALB cells directly from China, and are doing the work to DIY our battery bank. In the end, we will get significantly more storage into a smaller space, for about 1/3 of the price. This is part one of the process. When we finish showing the entire process, we'll provide a dedicated page on our website with all the nitty, gritty details including the entire planning and importation process as well as the installation. This week, Arabella slows down and cruises through the Great Dismal Swamp, navigating her first lock—the Deep Creek Lock—and leaving a small reminder that they were there ;-) After a provisioning run at the local Food Lion, Steve and Robin venture deeper into the Great Dismal Swamp, which—despite its name—is both serene and esoteric. Its history dates back to the 1700s, when the canal was dug by hand using slave labor, giving Steve and Robin pause to reflect on this history. While a visit to Waffle House wasn’t on the itinerary, Steve, Robin and Akiva found time for an an exploration mission down the feeder ditch and into Lake Drummond. Cypress trees are a new fauna for the crew, and they enjoy motoring around their wild trunks. Passing through the Great Dismal Swamp Visitor center, Arabella ends up in the Harbor of Hospitality: Elizabeth City, NC. They shop around downtown, exploring some adorable boutiques and perusing the South’s largest collection of rolling pins! On Christmas Day, Arabella sets sail across the Albemarle Sound and into the Alligator River, where the forecast does not deliver on its promises. The anchorage proves much too choppy for a comfortable night’s stay, and Steve and Robin have no choice but to head into the Pungo Canal and cross their fingers for a safe place to drop the hook. Steve has an idea, and sets off in Victoria to bring his vision to life…but, while turning Arabella around, Robin runs her aground—and this time, they’re really stuck. However, Steve is (kinda) excited to kedge the boat for the first time. He uses a kedge anchor in combination with an intricate system of lines and pulleys run back to shore to heel Arabella onto her side until she was able to float off the bank and back into deep water. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built.
