In this week's video, Mads finally has enough parts to test both of our Yanmar 3YM30AE engines. The engines are only from 2018, but one was submerged when the catamaran sank, and the previous owner rebuilt both of the engines. Will they explode? ROYPOW supports the Elcano World Challenge #ROYPOW Check out ROYPOW here : https://www.roypow.com/marine-ess/ Contact ROYPOW here : marine@roypow.com HOW CAN YOU GET YOUR OWN ROYPOW MARINE ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM? 1. Send ROYPOW an email of your details and requirements marine@roypow.com 2. Order directly through ROYPOW or ROYPOW may recommend you a local dealer in your case 3. ROYPOW will design it, test it and pack it and send it direct to you. I am very lucky to have ROYPOW come on board with the Elcano World Challenge. They have simplified my whole battery system and are able to supply everything – that’s right, they are a one-stop shop and it is excellent quality but don’t just take my word for it. Check out YouTube’s favourite Battery and Solar guy, Will Prowse, and check out for yourself what he has to say about ROYPOW. The following are the links to the Will Prowse videos where he thoroughly tests different ROYPOW batteries. If you are shopping around, make sure you are asking the other lithium battery manufacturers if they supply a complete system ready to simply PLUG and PLAY with everything provided ie chargers, batteries, power distribution units, monitors and cables. If they don't do the complete system then make sure you understand there is still a lot of cost and effort in creating a complete energy system for your boat on top of the lithium batteries. That is one of the reasons I went with ROYPOW - hassle free with a one stop shop with all the equipment seemlessly working together because it all comes from the one manufacturer - ROYPOW. How great is that!

My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog. Now, I’m exploring a new chapter, having jumped aboard my partner’s Hallberg Rassy Rasmus with Boga and his Australian Kelpie, Jango. Together, we face the unique dynamics and challenges of sailing as a couple, balancing off-grid life, sustainable sailing, and the demands of long-term cruising. Throughout the process of building my own wooden sailboat, I had to make several important decisions. Some of these decisions were met with massive support, others…not so much. One important consideration was marine diesel engine maintenance—I wanted it to be as easy as possible! In this week’s episode, we’ll be exploring the 3 best decisions I made while building my sailboat, Arabella. First, the Emmert Pattern Makers’ Vise and workbench, which has been a huge help for rigging projects! This week, the vise came in handy while splicing, seizing, and setting up a beefy anchor pennant line. My sewing skills also came in handy in creating the eye for the line. Ultimately, I’m really happy with how the anchor pennant came out. And I only had to get a little wet (and slightly concussed) to install it… Installing the Pattern Makers’ Vise was one of the more controversial additions to my DIY sailboat, but I’m so glad I have it. The next decision I’m so glad I made was installing a Dual Fuel Filter from Keenan Filters. This system has some great features. It uses twin Racor filters, so there are no expensive, proprietary filters to buy, which I really appreciate. This week, I do a filter swap, and I also show you one of the coolest tricks up this system’s sleeve: it clears any airlocks from the fuel system. The third decision I’m so glad I made was being able to change the oil on our boat with the flick of a switch. Simply turning on the oil change filter and flipping a switch allows us to drain our oil quickly. Then, we just have to flip that switch the other way to fill back up with fresh oil. Many a sailor turns green with envy when we show off these convenient marine engine maintenance systems! After the engine maintenance was done, it was time for some fun! We met up with our friends, Kourtney and Pete, for a day of beaches and BBQ. Captains BBQ in Palm Coast, FL served up some flawless southern BBQ, I made friends with a lizard, and Matanza beach was pink with coquina sand (and plovers, much to Robin’s delight). We wrapped up the day with a visit to Princess Place, which gave us a peek into the high life—without any shortage of Spanish moss! -------------------------- Episode 336 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! In this episode Saoirse has Steve and Keith aboard, for "surf week". We fuel up with jerricans, then do a lap around the island of Lombok, hitting some of the local waves on western Sumbawa and southern Lombok. Points of interest include: Scar Reef, Yo-Yo's, Ekas Bay (not pictured), Belongas Bay, and then back to Gili Asahan to stage for Desert Point break. We end up saving a surfer after dark on Scar Reef after we heard him calling out for help. He had lost his board on the break, and was getting pulled out to sea. We were glad to be in a position where we could assist. On the maintenance side, we create some drainage holes to allow water to escape from the flybridge roof, as there is some unknown ingress point. First step, drain what's there...then we'll start working to find and seal the source. Thanks for following! There has been a break in the podcast due to me travelling to Europe to pick up a new boat for the Veteran's Sailing Program, but I'm back now and what a story I have to tell! Nothing's ever simple with boats! Grab a cup of tea and sit yourself down and have a listen to the first part of my tale- just getting to the boat through Covid Lockdown travel restrictions, then losing my financing, then crazy contractual wrangling, cross country drives over the Sierra Nevada Mountains, extreme project triage and a final workable solution which did not resemble in anyway the plan we had at the outset. It's good old fashioned problem solving nightmare and another stage in my education that maintenance of the overall objective despite critical set backs is all that counts. Just before you go.... We have two Yanmar 4JH4-TE 75hp engines. With regular maintenance, these engines should comfortably last 10,000hrs and ours have 5,000. Engine maintenance is difficult on a boat. Space is tight, temperatures are often unbearable, and unless you have confidence and experience working on engines, it’s not uncommon to discover a lot of deferred maintenance. When we purchased the boat, we knew it was leaking oil. We were also pretty certain that nothing deeper than semi-regular oil and impeller changes were done. Now we have three choices: 1. Repower. 2. Replace the old components with new ones. 3. Disassemble, clean, and fix the components that can be salvaged and replace those that can’t. We’ve opted for door number three. Shawn has a lifetime wrenching on engines, developing this skill from about age six at his father and brother’s sides. Also, new engines are not in the budget. So, it’s makeover time. All shop equipment was purchased at Harbor Freight. Music by Uppbeat. https://uppbeat.io/ https://sailingroam.com/ ☝More about us, our adventures, and how we do all this on our website. As we learn to let go of our American drive to finish, and embrace the meandering routes across islands, oceans, continents, and people, we hope to gain a better sense of our world and our place in it.

Ever wondered how a DIY water maker works that uses a pressure washer as a main pump? See how we tackled a DIY water maker installation on a sailboat to achieve an off-grid water supply for sailing. In this video, we share why we chose the octopus water maker, a cost-effective water maker for sailors, and how it simplifies turning seawater into drinking water. If you’re wondering, do I need a water maker, or comparing portable vs fixed water makers, this guide explains the decision-making process and setup. Perfect for those exploring remote sailing and water needs or aiming for water independence for sailboats, this project offers practical insights into achieving a sustainable sailing water solution on a budget. Facing the challenges of solo sailing as a female sailor, I navigated the highs and lows of single-handed sailing while tackling DIY boat repair projects, from engine fixes to full boat refits on a budget. For months, Steve and Robin have been moving Arabella south, waiting for warm enough weather to haul her, and give her a fresh coat of paint. The time has finally come. Arabella is getting hauled out, and—in this episode—we’ll detail the hard work that went into scraping and painting their homebuilt wooden sailboat. Arabella’s last paint job was done in Rockland, Maine, back in November 2023. It was a little too cold, and despite tenting and heating the hull below the waterline, the paint job just didn’t stick. This paint job will be different. With a sunny, warm, and dry forecast for the foreseeable future, it’s time to get to work. But he’s gotta move fast to prevent the oak and cedar planks from drying out too much while Arabella sits on the hard in the hot Florida sun (and to prevent a yard bill bigger than his bank account). He starts by gathering and sharpening the equipment he needs to scrape the bottom paint and splooging seam compound off Arabella. Steve singlehandedly scrapes and sands the entire hull down to the wood, and explains why the bare hull looks the way it looks (hint: the wood isn’t moldy, it’s just the remnants of a layer of black bottom paint). As usual, Steve’s got a well-thought-out plan, and a few boxes of TotalBoat paint and products to make the magic happen. Steve and Robin use the laser to mark the waterline, bringing it up just a few more inches. Before applying the first coat of bottom paint, Robin gives Arabella a bath in denatured alcohol. The crew gets to painting, coat after coat. Ultimately, they apply three coast of bottom paint and two coats of topside paint, working well into the night to get all of the work done. The finishing touch is Arabella’s name, hand painted onto the stern of the boat. After 8 days on the hard, Arabella is ready to be relaunched, and Robin, Steve and Akiva are ready to continue their journey south to…who knows! But, they have another problem they could use your help with: modifying the 8-pin connector on their Epropulsion electric dinghy motor. Their Propulsion Evo Tiller has left them stranded one too many times, but Steve and Robin really like other aspects of the motor and don’t want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. If you have an idea, we’d love to hear it! Send your thoughts to acorntoarabella@gmail.com. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Yep, we're getting the boat ready to sail in 2025. Our 1983 Catalina C30 Tall Rig is being upgraded this winter. Why They Chose the Cruising Lifestyle For Alicia, sailing represented freedom and adventure—the excitement of waking up in a new country every few days. Douglas, on the other hand, is a homebody who values community, stability, and creative work. Though he enjoyed the experience, he struggled with the transient nature of the lifestyle and missing his lifelong friendships and family connections. One major realization? Freedom at sea comes with limitations. While sailing offers the ability to move, it also means being at the mercy of the weather. At one point, they were stuck in a terrible anchorage for three weeks, just waiting for a weather window to travel east. Pro-tip #1: If you’re considering the sailing life, get LASIK eye correction before you go—it’s much easier than dealing with constantly dirty glasses on a boat! Challenges They Faced • The difficulty of returning home – Finding an island with a marina and an airport that aligned with their needs wasn’t always easy. • Financial reality – They realized they didn’t have the funds to sustain full-time cruising indefinitely. While remote work opportunities exist, reliable income was a challenge. However, Starlink has been a game-changer for those working remotely from a boat. • Boat maintenance fatigue – Douglas grew weary of constantly checking the weather and fixing the boat. He wished they had bought a boat already located in the Caribbean instead of sailing down from Wisconsin. However, his favorite part of the journey was traveling through the river system—something they would have missed had they started elsewhere. Pro-tip #2: For passages, have a third crew member. If one person gets sick, handling the boat becomes incredibly difficult. Pro-tip #3: Be self-sufficient with repairs—there’s no mechanic on call when you're offshore! Scariest Moments at Sea 1 A boat dragging into them at night – They anchored in calm conditions but woke up to 50-knot winds in the middle of the night with torrential rain. The sudden change made even getting out of bed difficult, let alone dealing with another boat drifting toward them. 2 Alicia’s allergic reaction to conch – She got incredibly sick, and if she had been on land, she would have called an ambulance. On the boat, she had to push through without immediate medical help. 3 Managing medical needs – Douglas relies on thyroid medication, and getting regular medical checks in the Caribbean wasn’t easy. Pro-tip #4: Learn as much as possible and practice your skills before setting sail. Pro-tip #5: Stock up on regular medications—you won’t always have easy access to a pharmacy. Pro-tip #6: Schedule regular visits home to see family and for medical appointments. They regretted spending the first year without leaving the boat. What They Would Do Differently • Choose a catamaran instead of a monohull – Alicia wonders if the boat’s motion will impact the video, leading to a key insight:Pro-tip #7: If you don’t like rocking, buy a catamaran! • Prioritize personal well-being over the boat – Sailing can be stressful, but at the end of the day, you are more important than your vessel.Pro-tip #8: Your health and sanity matter more than your boat. • Plan for the real costs – One of the biggest surprises? It costs more than you think! Food and laundry can be incredibly expensive in certain places.Pro-tip #9: Budget for more than expected—it will cost more than you think! • Stock up on spares – Whether it’s boat parts or basic necessities, having backups is crucial.Pro-tip #10: Food and laundry are surprisingly expensive. Plan accordingly!Pro-tip #11: Stock up on spares—you never know when you’ll need them! • Know your boat inside and out – Whether it’s maintenance, repairs, or handling, a deep understanding of your vessel makes a huge difference.Pro-tip #12: Intimately learn your own boat—it will save you trouble in the long run. Final Thoughts Alicia and Douglas loved different aspects of the cruising lifestyle. Alicia thrived in the adventure, while Douglas ultimately longed for a home base with his family and friends. Their biggest motivator for returning? They now have their first grandbaby. Their journey was filled with unforgettable moments, invaluable lessons, and a deep appreciation for both the freedom of the sea and the comfort of home. Would they do it again? Maybe—but with a few adjustments. For anyone considering the sailing life, their advice is clear: plan ahead, know your boat, and be ready for the unexpected.
