In this episode, we tackle a critical fix of our mainsail track. After discovering significant damage that rendered it useless, we had to get creative to keep things functional until we can make it back to the States for a proper replacement. With limited resources and no guarantee our plan would work, it was a true test of ingenuity and problem-solving. Will our makeshift solution work? Join us as we share the process, the challenges, and a few lessons learned along the way. Thank you all so much for your continued support. We really appreciate it! Impeller change. Many neglect the beating heart of sailboat ownership. MAINTAIN YOUR STUFF!!!!!!!!!!
Replacing a 2 year old impeller. The current one was still working fine but it was 2 years old. Basic maintenance is to replace it needed or not every new season. Many people don't maintain or actually neglect the beating heart of a sailboat. (It's Engine). You can sail with out a motor but it is absolutely a needed part of your sailboat. No engine is almost asking for trouble with tidal currents and wind from a wrong direction when traveling the ICW. #youtube #sailing #tampa #youtuber #cruising #shorts

Our last anchorage in Vanuatu has to be one of our most favourites ever because we had a great holding, incredible clear water to see the coral reef , plenty of boat kids to hang out with and a nice venue for the parents...what more could you ask for ? ...and even Woody's dream came true as he got to do some boat maintenance and put the bow thruster prop back on ! After years of being career focused, we decided it was time to shake things up and sought a lifestyle that would provide us with new experiences, humble us, allow us to visit remote locations, and experience new cultures. In 2021, we traded our regular suburban lifestyle for a nomadic one and moved aboard our sailboat, Te Tāiko, a Chico 40. After three years sailing in New Zealand and preparing for Category 1 (regulations for New Zealand registered vessels planning to sail offshore), we set sail from New Zealand to Fiji on the 23 May 2024. This would be Vicki and Tāiko's first ocean passage and Adam's third. We have since sailed to Vanuatu and New Caledonia, where we will be during the cyclone season. We fund our lifestyle by working part time. This sometimes involves returning to New Zealand to help top up the bank account. The other avenue is through our content creation where we document our journey though YouTube videos and our our social media accounts and website. After launching just before Christmas we dove straight into work, assessing what remained unresolved on our Leopard Catamaran after the extensive warranty related haul out, getting her clean and ready to sail. This includes tensioning the rig, assessing collateral damage and showing you the current state of things like the door, mainsail and table. While we appreciate the genuine efforts of people who have helped us on our journey, including certain individuals at both Leopard Catamarans and Robertson & Caine, the last few years have been the worst of our lives. I share some of my current thoughts and opinions as eloquently as I could (keeping in mind this is an emotional subject), frustrated over losing years of our lives to this awful experience after working hard to achieve a dream of sailing the world, and still hoping that our experience affects change that means no other owner goes through something like this, whether publicly as we choose to do or privately as many who've reached out to us have done. I also touch on our 2025 cruising plans, including where we hope to sail our Leopard 45 before the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane season comes around again. Different wind conditions for docking our sailboat using a simple and easy to do mooring system. I always dock in reverse because my crew prefers this way to get in and out of the boat, also to load and unload things easily, and the dog. However maneuvering this boat in reverse without bow thrusters is a bit difficult, and I didn't have the confidence to do it on my own until I came across this system. Now I can easily go on my own and dock at any marina. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK Sailing Marisa makes no warranties, express or implied, about the content of our videos. Farewell, Annapolis. It's time for this handcrafted wooden sailboat to keep cruising South towards warmer weather. After visiting a few quiet anchorages in the Chesapeake, Robin, and Akiva stop for a few days in Seaford to get some "life stuff" done...but not before getting the boat stuck in the mud. Fortunately, "Southern hospitality" is a real thing, and there was no shortage of helping hands to get Akiva to shore and help pass the time waiting for the tide to rise. Planning around tides is tricky business when the days are long, but the daylight is short... Prior to heading into the Dismal Swamp Canal, Steve rigs a 45 lb. Mantus anchor on the stern—or, as he likes to say, he "gave Arabella some brakes." Using a stern anchor will help them safely anchor in tight, congested areas, preventing Arabella from swinging where she shouldn't. After a quick, Christmassy visit to Colonial Williamsburg, Steve and Robin head out of Seaford (at high tide, this time), navigating a very foggy Chesapeake River, and making their way through Norfolk, VA, one of the busiest shipping corridors in the United States and the largest naval base in the world. A few bridges, and voilà...Arabella makes it out of Norfolk and into the Swamp. But more about that next week... -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! Anchored, cummins, jerry cans, screwing, dancing, fuel, diesel. We are still anchored. Started to go out, the engine died and ended up being towed back to the same anchorage we were at previously. Steve has done some diagnostics and we’re making progress on fixing the issue. Using the time to do some DIY, we adjusted the board where we secure our jerry cans. It was lowered to better align with the height of the cans and had to be cut so it would not rub against the turn buckle on one of the shrouds. Karen screwed on bolt protectors so the bolts would not rub on the cans. What do we do at anchor? Bringing in the 2025 new year we reflected on 2024, living in the Florida Keys and are hoping to leave this anchorage soon. We wish all of our subscribers and viewers the very best for 2025. Join me in the final video of 2024 as I gear up for my next adventure—Chasing the Cherry Blossom 2 in 2025! This month has been all about preparation, with not one but two haulouts in just two weeks (one of them unexpectedly). The main focus was to prepare Wahine for an incredible journey starting in Q1 of 2025. Key tasks included: - Inspecting and replacing sea cocks. - Painting both above and below the waterline. - Removing the onboard toilets to switch to a composting system. - Tackling a major floorboard project, expertly managed solo by my mate Ian. - After the first haulout, we celebrated by splashing back into the water, going on a refreshing cruise, and swimming in the bay. As I set my sight on 2025, Wahine and I are preparing to explore Japan’s aging communities, coastal life, and the role hope plays in longevity—all while following the Sakura (cherry blossoms) from Okinawa's "Blue Zone" to the northernmost regions of Japan. If you are interested in the cost of hauling out in Japan, fast forward to near the end, where I will outline the work done and the costs involved. Get ready for an inspiring new chapter of discovery and adventure—starting with this exciting glimpse behind the scenes! Subscribe for more sailing insights at Pacific Solo on YouTube. Details on how to service the C-drive on Amel sailboats. There is nothing new and dramatic in this, just the best practices. The C-Drive that Amel used on their cruising boats for decades was, and still is, a great drive train for a cruising boat. It is simple, robust, smooth-running and quiet. Like all parts of a boat it does take maintenance to keep it in good form. This video goes into detail about how to change the oil seals on the bottom end as required every 800 hours of engine operation. In addtion to the seals, proper alignment of the engine and drive train is key to keeping them happy. See this video for detail on that: https://youtu.be/BGfegulZQBI The seal puller I describe in this link.: https://amzn.to/3PghpDK Molykote 111 Silicone grease used to lubricate the seals is here: https://amzn.to/49Ve9Hk Comments and questions welcome. We are SO INCREDIBLY HAPPY to bring you this episode because it is a moment we have all been waiting for, for so long. Years, in fact. This week we got our first coat of paint on in the boat. So not only is that a huge milestone for us in this build, but it means that specific area has been checked off and should never have to be faired, sanded, primed, or painted ever again. It's only new projects in there from now on. The area we tackled first was the master head, between bulkheads 3 and 5 of the starboard hull. This includes the shower as well as the toilet and vanity area. Part of the reason we chose to do this space first is because we know we'll be keeping a high gloss finish in here, where in other areas of the boat we're debating adding a flattening agent to the paint to end up with something closer to a semi-gloss. There would be no testing with percentages of that additive in here though, all we had to do was prep and paint. Much easier said than done though. After going through an entire day dedicated to wiping, vacuuming, and washing - we painted the next day and ended up with runs EVERYWHERE. We had a good feeling when we started that it would not magically turn out perfect for us, and we were right. It's ok though, because it taught us exactly NOT what to. Spending two days sanding the surface back down, and then another day doing a full cleaning, we were ready for attempt two. Although there are still some minor flaws, we're very happy with how it came out. And now that this area is done, we can paint the starboard hallway next. Let us know what you think of the process and how it turned out!

I will explain the difference between feeling safe and being safer. Short cuts for convenience, modifications and DIY projects need to meet the safety standards!! The Difference Between Feeling Safe and Being Safe Offshore Sailing Offshore sailing is often considered one of the most exhilarating and liberating forms of seafaring. The open ocean, vast and endless, offers an immense sense of freedom. However, with that freedom comes significant responsibility. The importance of safety at sea cannot be overstated, yet many sailors may confuse the feeling of safety with the actual state of being safe. This confusion can have dire consequences, especially when offshore sailing is involved, where help is often far away and conditions can change rapidly. Several factors, including cost-cutting measures, inexperience, and misinformation, can blur the lines between feeling safe and being truly safe. The Concept of Feeling Safe vs. Being Safe Being Safe: True safety at sea, however, involves actual preparedness, knowledge, and equipment that ensures survival under various challenging and potentially dangerous conditions. It’s about being capable of responding to emergencies and navigating unpredictable circumstances, regardless of how a sailor feels in the moment. When sailors confuse the two, they might believe they are prepared for offshore challenges when, in fact, they are not. Cost-Cutting: A False Sense of Security One of the most common pitfalls that lead to feeling safe but not being safe is cost-cutting. Sailing, particularly offshore, can be expensive. From buying the right boat and equipment to maintaining it and ensuring it’s ready for the open sea, there are significant financial implications. In an attempt to reduce expenses, some sailors might make compromises that diminish their actual safety. Inexperience: Overestimating One’s Abilities Another factor that contributes to the feeling of safety without actual preparedness is inexperience. Offshore sailing requires a variety of skills, from navigation to handling adverse weather conditions, dealing with mechanical issues, and knowing how to properly respond to emergencies. Inexperienced sailors may have an overestimation of their abilities, mistakenly believing that they can handle any situation just because they’ve read about it or watched videos online. Misinformation: The Dangers of Relying on Incorrect Assumptions Misinformation can be another factor that leads sailors to feel safer than they actually are. In an age of easily accessible online resources, sailors may rely on anecdotal advice or unverified sources when making safety decisions. Websites, forums, and social media often present overly simplistic or inaccurate information, leading to dangerous misconceptions about safety. The Importance of a Safety at Sea Offshore Certification Given the risks posed by cost-cutting, inexperience, and misinformation, a certification in offshore safety is essential for anyone serious about sailing beyond the reach of immediate help. We hope everyone watching is in the middle of a great holiday season. All we want for Christmas is for you to tell your friends and family about our channel :-) After spending a few days pinned down with bad weather, Steve and Robin head out of Bivalve and up the Delaware River. With a rainbow marking the entrance to the C&D Canal, Arabella makes her way through Chesapeake City and into the Chesapeake Bay. Then, it's a bit of a nerve wracking passage through dense fog into the safety of Annapolis, America's Sailing Capital. They are very grateful to have radar and AIS to help them get where they are going safely. They spend a rainy day checking out the Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park, meeting some new friends from the Severn Sailing Association, and checking out the annual Holiday Market. Stay to the end of today's video to check out Steve's interview with Matt and Jessica of MJ Sailing, who stopped by for breakfast and a tour of Arabella. They share stories from their journey building a performance catamaran, which they hope to finish soon. We know how that goes... Check them out at https://www.youtube.com/@MJSailing -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. 🙂 Le lien des chansons : Fall - Alaclair Ensemble https://open.spotify.com/intl-fr/track/53gWc8NpofnnQngXJykJwR?si=3de92d7571464fc7 Outro: Better in the Dark - Jordana, TV Girl https://open.spotify.com/intl-fr/track/3SeDS5sSoWnwAZvVgkdKzf?si=ecd104f915d04972 #sailing #sailboat #sail #boatlife #boating #voilier #voile #bahamas #intracoastal #icw #learntosail #yanmar #2gm #2gm20f #annapolismd #voyage #travelvlog #traveling #grampians #asaliah #chesapeake #chesapeakebay #norfolk #annapolis #froid #cold #ashore #naufrage #coincé #débrouillard #apprentissage #débutant #mécanique #sailmaking #réparationdevoile #réparation #diyprojects #diy #diyboat
