En este video os enseño cómo han quedado las fundas de las ruedas del timón y una pequeña corrección que monté mal de los rizos de la vela mayor. Y lo más importante, seguimos con la domotización del barco basándonos en la aplicación Home Assistant. En esta ocasión hemos instalado un sensor de humo y un par de sensores de fugas de agua. Los hemos ubicado en sitios donde en condiciones normales nunca debería haber agua (junto a la hélice de proa y en el cofre de popa) Home assistant es un software libre que permite integrar cientos de sensores disponibles en el mercado y también permite fabricar los sensores a medida, como ya hicimos con el monitor de sentina inteligente. Todo ello se puede monitorizar bien desde el barco o bien desde tu casa (o cualquier otro sitio) y recibir alarmas. Las posibilidades son enormes, el siguiente proyecto que voy a hacer es un monitor de baterías, ahora mismo tengo la batería del generador y las baterías de la hélice de proa no las tengo monitorizadas. Cualquier problema con los cargadores haría que se descargasen y las tendría que reemplazar. We’re excited to be able to sail again—it’s been a while since we’ve enjoyed a good sail! While anchored in Cape Coral, we heard a new and unfamiliar noise, a crackling or popping sound. At first, I thought it was an electrical shortage, so I turned off power to the boat…but that wasn’t it. Then I thought maybe something on deck was making the noise, but that also wasn’t it. After a quick Google search, we found out that what we were hearing was pistol shrimp! The pistol shrimp is a small yet powerful marine creature renowned for its loud snapping sound and intense heat generation. This unique ability has disrupted military sonar, inspired clean energy research, and appeared in popular culture. And now we’re hearing it on Arabella. Heading out of Cape Coral was an adventure in and of itself—I’ve never seen more boats on the water! There was a line of boat traffic as far as the eye could see in both directions. Fortunately, our destination was a lot less crowded… Cabbage Key is a small, under-developed 100-acre island off of Pine Island in Charlotte Harbor. It got its name because of the plentiful Cabbage Palm trees that grow on the island. Not only is Cabbage Key a hidden tropical paradise, but there are bayous and keys all around that are fun to explore via paddleboard or kayak. And that’s just what we did… Robin found a paddleboard route that goes around the back of Cabbage Key, into Murdock Bayou, through a natural mangrove tunnel called the “Tunnel of Love,” and into a blue lagoon on the back of Cayo Costa. After breakfast at the Dollar Bill Bar on Cabbage Key, we set off on our adventure. We landed on a shell-covered white sand beach on the Gulf side of Cayo Costa where a long walk on the beach did our souls some good. The next day, we hit the island’s small network of nature trails, fawning over the new-to-us flora. We left one small reminder of our presence, and headed on to the next anchorage—where we tied our stern off to a few mangroves, and set a trip line for the anchor. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. IN THIS VIDEO: We sail to Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, making a game out of our lazy sailing—can we hoist the mainsail without it snagging in the lazy jacks? But our fun quickly turns into panic when we realize we’ve made a critical anchoring mistake—we’re too close to the channel. Suddenly, a massive cruise ship is bearing down on GoTFO⛵, narrowly missing us! That heart-pounding moment teaches us a valuable lesson, and we quickly relocate to a mooring ball across the bay. With the boat now safely secured, Dennis tackles the annual winch service, and we believe we’re the first to document how to service Lewmar size 46 and 50 winches. As he works, Dennis casually mentions a long shaft, and Ann—never one to let an opportunity slip—fires back with an innuendo, setting off a chain reaction of playful jokes. Once the winch is reassembled, something doesn’t sound quite right, so Dennis dives into troubleshooting while Ann gets creative. She repurposes our dinghy pole into a dive flag, swapping out the broken all-around white dinghy light for the Alpha flag—the international symbol for divers in the water. Naturally, the dinghy pole also becomes prime material for more jokes. We then set sail for Marie-Galante, Guadeloupe, flying across the water at nearly 9 knots—almost half the wind speed. After anchoring, we take Schatzi for a stroll through town, soaking in the French charm, complete with a cordonnerie (shoemaker) and picturesque streets. The ferry shuttles back and forth, but at one point, we witness something we’ve never seen before—it actually picks up a ginormous mooring ball! Meanwhile, several wing foilers carve effortlessly across the waves, fueling our dreams of learning the sport in the future. One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. We then flew there and explored South Africa by way of a safari and touring Cape Town before moving aboard our boat. We then sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha (Brazil), Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French side), the US Virgin Islands (Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas), the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Norman Island, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada), The Bahamas (Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera). We then sailed back to the United States, making landfall in Cape Canaveral, Florida. From there our destinations are endless! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) wrote Test Automation in Python and Java. Dennis and Ann met on Match.com where Ann had in her profile "Do you want to sail the world with me?" Ann easily brought Dennis into sailing, and he loved the GTFOplan of retiring early and sailing the world. After many years of saving, living on one income but earning two, and cutting back on everything possible, they saved enough to buy a Balance 482. Ezra at Hunter's Yard, Ludham, the home of The Norfolk Heritage Fleet Trust, using traditional methods to caulk a seam on a wooden Norfolk Broads yacht from the 1930's. The Trust is a charity dedicated to public education, sail training & the preservation, conservation & maintenance of a unique, historic fleet of traditional Broads sailing craft, the boatsheds in which they were built & associated and endagered heritage craft skills Hunter’s Yard lies at the heart of the Norfolk Broads and is the home of our Fleet of 14 traditional cabin yachts lovingly known as ‘Percy’s Lovely Ladies’. We also have 8 half deckers (day boats), which includes 3 Rebels (racing boats) part of only a few available on the Norfolk Broads for hire. Our ‘Lovely Ladies’ were designed specifically to be sympathetic to these beautiful, unique waterways and are available for hire for short breaks to full weeks. All our vintage cabin yachts and half deckers deliver a great sailing experience from our smaller 2 berth (Hustler Class), 3 berth (Wood Class) or our larger 4 berth (Lullaby Class) yachts. Some yachts in our Fleet are now equipped with an electric engine. Hunter’s Yard have pioneered the introduction of electric pod type engines to the fleet to assist with mooring and when going through bridges. Some yachts in the fleet remain engineless so you would need to be an experienced skipper to take one out. Very good dinghy sailors do find our cabin yachts easy and a joy to handle. Ezra at Hunter's Yard, Ludham, the home of The Norfolk Heritage Fleet Trust, using traditional methods to caulk a seam on a wooden Norfolk Broads yacht from the 1930's. The Trust is a charity dedicated to public education, sail training & the preservation, conservation & maintenance of a unique, historic fleet of traditional Broads sailing craft, the boatsheds in which they were built & associated and endagered heritage craft skills Hunter’s Yard lies at the heart of the Norfolk Broads and is the home of our Fleet of 14 traditional cabin yachts lovingly known as ‘Percy’s Lovely Ladies’. We also have 8 half deckers (day boats), which includes 3 Rebels (racing boats) part of only a few available on the Norfolk Broads for hire. Our ‘Lovely Ladies’ were designed specifically to be sympathetic to these beautiful, unique waterways and are available for hire for short breaks to full weeks. All our vintage cabin yachts and half deckers deliver a great sailing experience from our smaller 2 berth (Hustler Class), 3 berth (Wood Class) or our larger 4 berth (Lullaby Class) yachts. Some yachts in our Fleet are now equipped with an electric engine. Hunter’s Yard have pioneered the introduction of electric pod type engines to the fleet to assist with mooring and when going through bridges. Some yachts in the fleet remain engineless so you would need to be an experienced skipper to take one out. Very good dinghy sailors do find our cabin yachts easy and a joy to handle. We’re cruising around Antigua, checking out some amazing views, and hiking through English Harbour. We're anchoring in a smaller anchorage where the winds spin boats 360 degrees and demonstrate how it takes a bit of time to settle in whenever we anchor down in a new spot. We also get some stunning drone shots of the coastline before saying goodbye to the super yachts that line the harbour. While underway to a scenic anchorage, Carlisle Bay, we get into a bit of boat maintenance. Our anchor chain is rusted so we fix it on the move! No mooring buoy or dock slip required. We also share a little DIY with materials we have on hand to stop galvanic corrosion by isolating stainless steel from galvanized metals. Then we test our aluminum boat for stray current using a silver silver chloride electrode to make sure everything’s in check. We’ll show you how we do it and what the results are. We explore more things in Tasmania, outside of Hobart such as the Hastings Caves, Maria Island and a good 17km trek to Cape Raoul. There is so much to see but Maria Island had to be one of our favourites, the history, wombats, Tasmanian Pademelons, Fossil Cliffs and Painted Caves.
