Just as the sun goes down, water starts flooding into the boat whilst we’re mid-passage, 50 miles offshore… In this week’s episode, we leave mainland France behind and set off on a 20-hour overnight passage to Corsica — but things don’t go smoothly. Just before we set off, our catamaran suddenly loses power, which we have to diagnose and repair before we can leave. 😳 Then, to make matters worse, as we were mid-passage to Corsica, preparing the boat for sailing in the dark, we discovered water flooding into the master cabin; we don't know where it's coming from, and we have to solve it quick! Along the way, we explore spectacular anchorages, hidden villages only accessible by boat, and fall in love with Corsica’s dramatic coastlines, medieval citadels, and breathtaking mountains. From the chaos of overcrowded anchorages on the mainland to the tranquillity of Corsica, this episode is a rollercoaster that shows the highs (and lows!) of real-life liveaboard sailing. This week has been a true reminder of why we chose this life — adventure, challenge, and the magic of sailing to unforgettable places. In this video, we will show you how we went ashore in 12 ft tidal anchorages without getting in the cold water! It's called a Dinghy Haul Out line and we learned it at the first Maine island we visited - Jewell. We can not simply drag our dingy ashore with us. 12 ft tides mean you would potentially need to drag your dinghy over 100 ft. And at 400 pounds, our dinghy is not very "draggable". But first, it was time for a visit home. We took a mooring ball in Falmouth Foreside to keep the boat safe. Wonderful spot - 50 mooring balls, protected and secure, and only 20 minutes cab ride to Portland airport. Dockside Grill is right at the marina, provisioning at Shaws is nearby, fuel, water and marine services are available, and beautiful hiking is near. https://guides.cruisingclub.org/harbor/falmouth-foreside/ Stephen and I left at the same time, but headed to different places. I visited the new grandchild in Michigan, and Stephen attended a retirement party for a dear friend at his former business. Stephen returned before I did - BONUS - that meant he worked on some projects ! New frig seals to keep the cold in, new faucet for easier dishwashing, a new electrical socket replacing an old rusty and dangerous one, and oil change on the dinghy engine. When I returned, we decided to visit Fort Gorges, a Portland landmark. Although challenging with currents, depths, and a rocky bottom, we did find a safe place to anchor right by the fort, and were able to dinghy close enough to go ashore, using a haul out line. Watch how it works! Fort Gorges was completed in 1864. It is a D-shaped, two-story, enclosed fortress, constructed entirely with local granite, and hosted 56 gun emplacements on the south, east, and west. https://www.portlandlandmarks.org/fort-gorges On to the city of Portland. Plenty to do and see, but no film! Next stop: Kennebunkport. This is a very small shallow area and really no place to anchor or grab a mooring. So, we anchored in Cape Porpoise. We came in right before a storm, and a friendly lobsterman directed us to his friends mooring ball, who was working another area. We were able to secure our vessel with his assistance and slept soundly that night. Next Stop is a new state: New Hampshire here we come! We need 10 different busbars on our Rival 38 as we go all electric. So we have been making our own from Tinned Copper bar. Some of them need to carry 600A. They need different numbers of connections and different sizes. We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. We have a frequently updated blog at https://sustainablesailing.net with membership options and a weekly newsletter at £2 per month for Early Bird Supporters. Our free Sustainable Sailing book is at: https://sustainablesailing.codeberg.p... Or visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for great hoodies, t-shirts and bags. When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all-electric (motor, cooking etc). In this episode I get waved down by some struggling paddleboarders who are having trouble getting back to shore against the wind and waves. I take them aboard while under sail by going hove to and sail them back to the marina. This is the 4th rescue I've been involved in at this lake, but usually I just tow kayakers back to a protected cove. This is the first time I've taken people onto the boat. Subscribe and follow @ColoradoSailing on YouTube for more original sailing videos, gear, boat maintenance, sailing tips and travel content as I sail my Precision 18 trailer sailer and Precision 16 sailing dinghy in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota. #sailingchannel #coloradosailing #sailing #mountainsailing #extremesports
► For over forty years, Nautix has been a benchmark in the world of marine paints. Based in Brittany, France, and distributed worldwide, the brand has won the trust of shipyards, boaters, and even the biggest ocean racing teams, who are looking for reliability, performance, and technical expertise. We met the Nautix team at the Cannes Yachting Festival, where the company presented its flagship ranges and unveiled new solutions designed for everyday use on board. When it comes to antifouling, their A3 Yachting remains a safe bet for owners who want to apply reliable and durable protection themselves. A3 Formula+ is aimed more at shipyards and professionals, with a reinforced formula adapted to the constraints of intensive maintenance. Finally, A4 T.Speed is the sportiest version, specially developed for racing boats, where every tenth of a knot counts and being able to slip through the water becomes a decisive factor. Environmental factors are obviously unavoidable when talking about antifouling. As we analyzed in Multihulls World in our article “Antifouling Together With Respect for the Environment - A Marriage that Could Never Be?” the issue remains a sensitive one. Nautix is taking a pragmatic approach in this area by offering formulas that comply with current regulations, but which are also designed to last longer, thus limiting the frequency of hull maintenance and the impact on the environment. But Nautix doesn't stop at the hulls of our multihulls. The brand is expanding its range with pads and rollers for non-slip and anti-chafe, designed to improve safety on deck and protect areas subject to friction, particularly around pad-eyes and rope leads. ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! We replaced all 3 reefing lines on our Lagoon 46 Catamaran, here's how we did it! The standard reefing lines being too thick for the rest of the rigging is a common problem on some catamarans, Lagoon 46s included. This leads to extra work when hoisting and lowering, lines hanging out the bag while the sail is down, and of course, a safety concern with increased time and difficultly to reef. Here's how we bonded our brand new Dynema lines to our old lines, ran them through the rigging as a replacement, and and got the sail up and down in record time. Once again, a huge shout out to Ari Storch, Tracey Oliver and all the people in the Lagoon 46 owners group on facebook who helped us get this problem diagnosed and fixed (with much more knowledge and efficiency than the company who sold us the boat!) It continues to be a challenging Summer trying to get out on the water. We are still dealing with some water level issues but that has been a significant issue. The major issue continues to be the weeds. I suspect that the lower water levels this year have been a major contributor to the excessive weed growth. It has been a struggle, but we have been managing to get out. We still continue to drag a massive amount of weeds out on our keel, sail drive and rudder. But every once in a while you get a good day - until the weather turns! Thanks for watching. Please remember to give us a LIKE and provide a comment. Also, if you haven't done so, please SUBSCRIBE. #inbarcacondario #crocierainsolitario #barcaavela #navigazionesolitario #vela #diariodibordo #maltempoinmare 🇺🇸🇬🇧 📍 Four nights stuck in Fano, bad weather showing no mercy, and the urge to set sail growing stronger each day. At last, the sky clears and the sea lets me go: sails up, bow pointed south. The leg isn’t long, but for me it’s a big step. With every mile I feel freedom flowing back, the coastline sliding by, the wind carrying me forward. And then the thrill of arriving in Ancona: the southernmost point I’ve ever reached alone by boat. MARKING ANCHOR CHAIN ESSENTIAL BOAT MAINTENANCE FOR LIVEABOARD SAILING ON OUR BENETEAU OCEANIS EP 83
In this episode of our liveaboard sailing around the world journey, we tackle an important piece of boat maintenance – marking 90 metres of anchor chain. Clear anchor chain markings are essential for safe and accurate anchoring, especially when cruising unfamiliar bays, reefs, and anchorages. Whether you’re a beginner sailor learning the ropes or a seasoned cruiser preparing for offshore passages, this is a job every sailboat owner should know how to do. Anchoring is one of the most important skills in the cruising lifestyle. Knowing exactly how much chain you’ve let out can mean the difference between a peaceful night and dragging into trouble. In this video, we walk you through how we measure and mark our entire 90m anchor chain to ensure we can drop the right scope in all conditions – from calm tropical bays to windy, exposed anchorages. But marking the chain is just one part of a busy day aboard. We also tick off a few other essential jobs to get our sailboat ready for upcoming adventures as we continue preparing for life travelling the world by sailboat. In this episode, you’ll see: - Step-by-step process for marking anchor chain - Tips on boat maintenance for safe cruising - How anchor scope works and why markings matter - Preparing for anchoring in different depths and conditions - Essential tasks we complete before long-term cruising We’re passionate about sharing practical sailing tips, real-life maintenance projects, and behind-the-scenes moments of our full-time sailing lifestyle. Every episode is about more than just sailing – it’s about the planning, preparation, and problem-solving that make long-term cruising possible. If you’ve ever dreamed of living aboard, exploring hidden anchorages, or simply want to improve your own anchoring technique, this is a must-watch. We hope our experience helps you feel more confident when it’s time to drop the hook on your own adventures. Subscribe to follow our liveaboard journey, get more sailing tutorials, and join us as we explore the world, one anchorage at a time. A sail that stretched 700 nautical miles from Townsville in Far North Queensland Australia to Moreton Bay in Brisbane Queensland. We are now preparing to move onboard and to sail around the world. Join us to see the challenges as we continue to learn to sail, prepare our boat and make changes so our boat feels like a home. We are moving onboard in just a few weeks so our sailing dream is getting closer and closer. This week, we continue cruising the Bras d’Or Lakes, bringing Arabella from Macnabs Cove to Baddeck…with a lovely stop at Pellier Harbour on the way. Robin was able to get some more experience with hoisting and lowering all four of Arabella’s sails, bringing us over to Pellier Harbour in one, long, beautiful tack, with 12-13 knots of wind on the beam. As far as we’re concerned, Pellier Harbour is the greatest anchorage in the Bras d’Ors. We know there are probably a dozen other incredible anchorages, but this one just stole our hearts. It’s a unique anchorage, and a great opportunity to practice anchoring bow and stern. If we were bolder, we could have put Arabella’s bowsprit over the sandbar. But we just…couldn’t ;-) Instead, I got as close as I dared and dropped the main anchor, threw Arabella in reverse, and then dropped the stern anchor. In hindsight, I should have dropped the stern anchor on the way in, but without Robin on board (hey, someone had to be filming from land) I wouldn’t have been able to finagle it. I’m glad we had the opportunity to practice anchoring bow and stern before arriving in Newfoundland. We learned a lot in a very low-consequence way, and can bring this new boating skill on the road with us as we head to our destination for the winter. There, we’ll likely encounter a lot more anchorages like this one. Retrieving the stern anchor requires a bit of thought. With some creative rigging, I set up a system that will make for easy retrieval. Creative anchoring aside, exploring Pellier Harbour turns out to be a big tease: the water is warm and clear and beckoning for us to dive in…but it’s also FILLED to the brim with Lion’s Mane jellyfish (and they do NOT want to hang out). We loved the peace, beauty and solitude of this anchorage so much, we extended our stay by an extra day. Greatest anchorage in the Bras d’Ors… We reluctantly weighed anchor after a few nights, and the sail to Baddeck was fun and light. The harbor is just as idyllic as everything else we’ve seen in the Brad ‘dOrs (but not quite as magical as Pellier Harbour). Baddeck was home to the famous inventor, Alexander Graham Bell, so, of course there’s a museum…and of course we take a quick tour of it! After all, we had plenty of time to kill while we were waiting for a new Starlink dish to arrive (grumble grumble, harumph harumph, a story for another time), and we love a good museum. In addition to the Alexander Graham Bell Museum, we were able to check out the Community Market, where we stocked up on some critical supplies: homemade croissants!! The outdoor ban also got lifted on our last day in Baddeck, and we immediately wandered into some local trails on Kidston Island where we snacked on wild blackberries and enjoyed every pine-scented inhale. It felt so good to be in the woods again…and where we’re going, there’s plenty more for us to explore. Our psych is at an all-time high! Get us to the mountains!! From Baddeck, our plan is to head over to Kelly’s Cove, an anchorage closer to the open ocean. That sets us up to make the run to North Sydney in a nice, short day. There, we’ll await our new Starlink dish and wait for a weather window to jump off to Newfoundland! -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. Monhegan Island & Harpswell - 9 miles of hiking trails, the highest ocean cliffs on the Maine coastline, a quaint village with shops, activities and lodging, seals, and a local lobster fleet. What more could you want on an isolated Maine island? Monhegan is a small, rocky island ten miles from the nearest mainland and scarcely a square mile in area. It is accessible only by boat and is primarily a walking island. The town is quaint with plenty of interesting local spots to visits and the hikes were exhilarating. Oh, and only 64 permanent residents. We anchored next to the 142ft. Baltic Semi Foiling SuperYacht "CANOVA" Baltic Yachts are leading the development of cutting edge foiling technology in the large luxury sailing yacht market. which means less pitching and more stability. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySzndUlIinE Mooring balls are hard to get, but well worth the effort, as anchoring can be tricky due to the water depths and the rocky bottom. Not to mention that the water is COLD even in summer, so diving on your anchor would be quite refreshing! Manana Island (next to Monhegan) just sold for at auction for $199000. It comes with a caretaker house, although it is in need of “caretaking”. Use to be the USCG signaling station. It has a tram on the other side that you can use to haul stuff up from the harbor. Be sure to take the cliff walk. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/maine/monhegan-island-trail And visit the The Island Inn Dining Room. https://islandinnmonhegan.com/dining/ In Harpswell, we found this interesting lobster operation in Pott’s Harbor. Quite larger than the shanty drop off spots that we have seen so far on this trip. This must be where all of the local drop off spots bring their lobsters for their final journey to your dining table. It’s a hard business to be in. Your day starts between 4-5 am, no matter the weather. And there are so many pressures on the lobstermen. Tourism is conflicting - competing for good workers and implementing sound ordinances not to wake the tourists so early with loud boats. But don’t the tourists want to see and eat the Maine lobsters? Additionally, the high cost of gear, affordable coastal housing availability, and competitive pressures from overseas fishing mean less lobstermen every year. A brief view of living on a sailboat. Its time for us to make a move and get ready for a little time onshore. The End to a decent season.
Fishability: Equipped with an aerated live well, large fish box, and multiple rod holders, it’s a fisherman’s dream for targeting inshore species like redfish or venturing offshore for snapper. Trailerable: Lightweight and paired with a Wesco aluminum trailer, it’s easy to tow and store, offering flexibility for exploring different waterways. Quality Build: Scout’s reputation for fit and finish shines with a polished look, durable composite hull, and reliable Yamaha power. Regular maintenance preserves resale value. Estimated Price: Based on market data, a well-maintained 2006 Scout 185 Sportfish typically ranges from $14,750 to $20,000, depending on condition, engine hours, and upgrades (e.g., electronics, trailer). Always get a marine survey. Family-Friendly: Comfortable seating, optional bimini for shade, and a swim platform make it great for family outings or casual cruising. ⚠️ Maintenance Tips Scupper Issue: Check and clean scupper valves to prevent water ingress when slowing or reversing; consider temporary plugs for fishing trips. Engine Care: Service the Yamaha outboard every 80-100 hours (oil, fuel filter, impeller, spark plugs) to maintain reliability, as noted by owners with low-hour engines. Hull Maintenance: Keep the fiberglass hull clean and waxed to prevent gelcoat fading. Inspect for stress cracks or damage, especially if used in saltwater. Electronics: Ensure the Garmin GPS and stereo systems are functional; update or replace outdated units for improved navigation. 🚤 Why Choose the 2006 Scout 185 Sportfish? The 2006 Scout 185 Sportfish is a perfect blend of functionality, style, and affordability, offering a compact yet feature-packed platform for fishing, cruising, or watersports. Its shallow draft, efficient Yamaha power, and thoughtful design make it ideal for coastal adventures, whether chasing fish in the flats or enjoying a day on the water with family. Priced between $14,750 and $20,000, it’s a great value for a reliable, versatile boat that’s built to last. #Scout185Sportfish #CenterConsole #FishingBoat #Boating #CoastalAdventures
Dinghy ride, a day at the beach, Hayabusa motorcycle cruise, ceviche and dancing. Join us for some relaxation and fun. Yep, no DIY this time on Isabella, the 56’ CNSO Mikado we call home. Steve and Karen take some time off to relax with a dinghy ride to check out the nearby oyster beds and the depths close by. Well, ok...it was also to see if the new connector between the motor and fuel line fixed the Mercury outboard issue we experienced in the last episode. Spoiler alert, no fix and still an issue. Hmmm, another DIY episode for a future date? The weather here has gotten warmer and we headed to the beach to cool off. Karen couldn’t resist the bathtub temperature water. Still not being cooled off enough, she took off her shirt to feel the full effect of the ocean breeze. It had been a while since the Hayabusa had been started and Steve decided it was time for a test drive. That baby started right up without any hesitation, so off he went. It always brings a smile to his face when he rides that machine. Beside dancing, cooking is another favorite activity on Isabella. Using our own recipe, we made ceviche with shrimp, Serrano peppers, fresh cilantro and other fresh ingredients. The taste was out of this world. Thank you for joining us on our adventure. We are fitting an electric motor, and we have run into problems with the batteries we have bought, with British Standards and with Insurance. We have had to question all our decisions and struggle to find a way forward. We still got other jobs done though.! We are now living aboard our Rival 38 CentreCockput full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. We have a frequently updated blog at https://sustainablesailing.net with membership options and a weekly newsletter at £2 per month for Early Bird Supporters. When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all-electric (motor, cooking etc). In this episode aboard SV Reeva, we crossed the Singapore Strait and arrived at Senibong Cove Marina, Johor Bahru. It was a bittersweet moment as we said goodbye to our crew — Swaroop and Apoorva returned to Switzerland, and Kaeya headed back to India. With the boat suddenly quiet, it took us a few days to adjust to life with just the two of us again. Once the farewells were behind us, it was time to get Reeva ready for new adventures. We stocked up on provisions, refilled our gas cylinders (with some creative jugaad!), and serviced our 35-year-old engine as part of its 300-hour maintenance. Soon, we set sail for Tioman Island, one of Malaysia’s most beautiful destinations, famous for its turquoise waters, turtles, and coral reefs. Along the way, we navigated busy shipping lanes near Johor Bahru, dodged merchant vessels, and found joy in the small moments of couple sailing life. Come along as we shift from sailing with family and friends to preparing for fresh adventures together. Don’t forget to Like, Comment, and Subscribe to follow our journey on SV Reeva. This episode discusses proper placement of a sailboat's jib cars on the jib car track and how to find the neutral starting position or "baseline" placement of the cars along the track for your particular sails. Finding the baseline position involves measuring the luff of the sail to find the mid-point and then drawing a line from there, through the clew, and locating the intersecting point along the jib car track. This "baseline" position is the theoretical position where the jib car should be placed in ideal conditions (neither overpowered nor underpowered) and smooth water. It may be different for each sail in your inventory. I also discuss the adjustment of the jib cars based on different sailing conditions. Moving the cars fore and aft changes the angle of force applied to the clew of the headsail. Moving the car aft increases the horizontal force (more pressure on the foot) while decreasing the vertical force (less pressure on the leech). Moving the car forward does the opposite, decreasing the horizontal force on the clew and increasing the vertical force. Generally, for heavier wind the jib cars are moved aft to flatten (de-power) the foot (bottom third) of the headsail and decrease leech tension which increases twist and reduces heeling force. For light air sailing, jib cars can be moved forward to increase the chamber or "belly" in the sail which will provide more power. More belly in the headsail can also used to increase power when dealing with waves and chop. Taking Out Perkins 4108 Engine At Our Mooring To The Beach To Be Rebuilt | Sailing Africa | S7 Epsd1
Welcome to Season 7 of Winded Voyage. This is sailing Africa. And it starts by doing big time maintenance on my dear Galopin. Most notably the Perkins 4108 engine. We sailed here from Cabo Verde when the engine was showing it's aches and pains. So as soon as we anchored I asked master mechanic Arona if we could take out Simone the engine for a complete rebuild. Within a few days, Arona was lifting the Perkins out of the boat at our mooring and taking it to the beach and on to his bench. Only here can one experience this marvel of African strength and unity. 00:00 Intro 00:22 Mooring control 00:45 Bloody message 01:35 Go fish 03:01 Beauty care store 03:45 My kind of shopping 04:26 Bounty inventory 05:59 Knock knock 06:53 Arona's there 10:10 Engine beach landing 11:41 Next week Some say it’s The Best Sailing Channel on YouTube! We are Eric, Kimberley, and Distin. We are from Alaska. We started our adventures in Alaska on our Nordhavn 55. We sold her and are now beginning our adventures on a new to us Nordhavn 50. Cruising Around Maine – East Penobscot Bay to Somes Sound! 🐚⚓ Join us as we continue our adventure through the beautiful coast of Maine aboard Havaseas! In this episode, we top off our fuel and head out through East Penobscot Bay, navigating the scenic Eggemoggin Reach, Pond Island Passage, and around Black Island, before cruising through the Western Way and into the stunning Somes Sound. 🐟 While at anchor, we’re treated to an incredible experience watching seals fish, until a few fishing boats arrived and scooped up all the action! 🗺️ We also take time to download charts for Canada as we get ready for the next leg of our trip. 🤝 And best of all, we had an amazing time hanging out with fellow Nordhavn owners in our “noodle” — great conversations, beautiful boats, and unforgettable memories. 📍Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe to follow the rest of our cruising journey! If you’re dreaming of living on board a Nordhavn or buying a Nordhavn for bluewater cruising, this video offers a firsthand look at the challenges and rewards of long-term boat life. We’ll take you behind the scenes to see how we manage real-life boating situations—from maintenance issues to steering failures—and offer tips for anyone planning to live aboard or buy a Nordhavn. 👉 Help support our channel and check out the Smaco gear with our affiliate link here: https://www.smacodive.com/product/smaco-s700-2l-mini-scuba-tank-with-heap-1/?ref=paragon Looking for an affordable mini scuba tank for under water boat maintenance, emergencies, or recreational diving? Something that can be stored on a smaller boat and even be charged with solar and wind? In this video, I review the Smaco S700 2L Mini Scuba Tank and the Smaco HEAP 1 Portable Electric Compressor. I’ll unbox and assemble the gear, fill the tank, and explain why this compact scuba system is great for: - Cleaning your sailboat’s hull and propeller at anchor - Changing zincs and inspecting thru-hulls - Checking on ground tackle - Emergency underwater repairs As a longtime diver and sailor, I’ve found this setup to be a great alternative to heavy, traditional scuba tanks, especially for hull maintenance, and for cruisers who want lightweight, portable gear on board.
