boats.com Senior Editor, Lenny Rudow, walks us through the steps on how to change your outboard engine water pump impeller. It's good outboard maintenance practice to check your water pump impeller every season, and replace it every two to three seasons. If you own an outboard engine, chances are sooner or later you'll need a new water pump impeller. And the chances are also good that it'll come sooner—not later. Some manufacturers, like Yamaha, recommend that you inspect the impeller every year and replace it every two to three seasons. To see how this job gets done by a pro, we visited Norfolk Marine and had Yamaha Master Tech Chris Breeden take us through the process. Caption: Watch and learn, as Yamaha Master Tech Chris Breeden, Service Manager at Norfolk Marine, changes a water pump impeller. The first step in this process is removing the lower unit. Pull the bolts that secure it, and have a friend help you slide the unit down and off of the outboard. Make sure you have a place to sit the lower unit in an upright position, before you pull it off of the engine. Next, remove the water pump housing bolts, and then lift off the housing. Use a flat-head screwdriver to help pop the housing free, if necessary. Now you can reach the parts you need to replace: the bottom gasket, base-plate, impeller, key, and cup. If you're just doing an inspection, look for a "set" (bending) in the impeller vanes, damage to them, or any melting or scoring on the cup. If any of these indications of wear are present, replace the parts. With all the bad parts replaced, bolt the water pump housing back on. Then lift the lower unit and slide the shaft back up the outboard, giving the lower unit a little wiggle-jiggle until it slides into place. Then, grease the lower unit bolts (so they don't seize in place) and bolt the lower unit back on. Finally, give your handy-work a test: hook a freshwater supply to the engine, start it up, and make sure water is flowing through the outboard as intended. Note—it will take a few minutes for water to work its way through the powerhead and to the tell-tale, on large four-stroke engines. Checking how the engine shifts is a good idea, too, just to make sure you lined everything up properly when re-assembling the engine.
http://features.boats.com/boat-content/2013/04/how-to-change-the-thermostat-on-an-outboard-engine/ For more how to videos, visit www.boats.com. We're spending the day with the service gurus at Norfolk Marine talking about some maintenance issues, and one we haven't touched on yet is how to change the thermostat on an outboard engine. This is a stuck thermostat. Chris, how do I even know if my thermostat is stuck in the first place? Chris Breeden, Service Manager/Yamaha Master Tech: Well, one of the easiest signs is you get a high idle and oil dilution. The oil dilution is going to be fuel finding its way past the rings and getting into the oil. Lenny: Oh, when your engine is "making oil". Chris: That's it. Lenny: Well, can you show us how to change the thermostat? Chris: Sure can. First thing, just pop the cowling off, set it aside, and on this model there's a flywheel cover, it pops right off, and on the 150's (Yamaha F-150 four-stroke outboard) it's located right here on the side. Take your ratchet with a 10mm, pop these guys loose, and with all three bolts out we can get the cover out of the way. Then it comes right out. Lenny: That's what a new thermostat looks like, and there's an old one. Chris: That's what they're supposed to look like when they're cold, completely closed. Lenny: On every model engine the thermostat will be located in a different place, right? How do I know where to find it? Chris: The easiest way is to refer back to the service manual, and if you don't have the service manual you can go on the internet and Google, and find it there. Lenny: So just about all of these service manuals, you can find on the internet? Chris: I haven't found one yet that you couldn't.
http://features.boats.com/boat-content/2013/04/lenny-and-jason-at-the-norfolk-marine-counter-of-shame/ For more videos about boats and boat parts, visit www.boats.com. Lenny: We've been here at Norfolk Marine shooting How-To videos for several days now, and Jason, thanks for having us. Jason: Thanks for coming. Lenny: I've got to tell you, one of the most interesting things I've seen here, as a boater, is your Counter of Shame. Jason: Yeah, we have pulled some stuff out from the service department which we thought would be entertaining for you guys, to see what not to do. We have a wide array of outboard powered things like fuel filters that have not stood the test of time, that may have caused issues for some folks for some reason - these should really be changed every 100 hours, some say every 50 hours. We have some exhaust tuners that have rotted out from not having used your freshwater flush, rectify regulators, some trim/tilt assemblies that have rusted out. I mean, proper boat maintenance is just essential to optimal performance. Lenny: What is this? Jason: That's a fried impeller, it basically looks like the core of a fan blade there. Lenny: I've got to ask you about this prop. What happened here? Jason: This was actually run on a skiff in down-town Norfolk, on Granby Street. During a nor' easter a few years ago there was about two feet of water on top of the tidal surge, and they were using this for rescues. So when they brought this in it was quite a scene and we saved the lower unit for a while and we've saved this prop. It's quite a story. Lenny: That's really neat. Can it be reconditioned? Jason: Yeah, we'll send it right over to the prop-shop and see if they can work it out.

The service bay at Norfolk Marine is headed up by Yamaha Master Tech Chris Breeden, and he shows us exactly what goes into the 100 hour service of a two-stroke outboard engine. Lenny: The 100 hour service on a two-stroke outboard is probably not something you're going to try at home. But you want to know what's going on at the dealership when they do that work, right? We're here at Norfolk Marine today, and Yamaha Master Tech Chris Breeden is going to show us step number one, of the 100 hour maintenance interval. Chris: The first thing you're going to do is drain the lower unit oil, by taking out the lower drain screw, and then you release the upper drain screw. Then you would tilt the engine down. (See our How to Change the Lower Unit Oil on a Boat video). Okay, the second step is going to be removing the spark plug boots. Then we're going to break the spark plugs loose and remove them for the compression check. When these plugs are out, now's the time to check them for how they're burning. You want the plug to be as white as possible on the center electrode. This one's in pretty good condition, this one here is starting to foul. One is pretty typical of a 100 hour service, and the other is running a little rich. Now we take the compression gauge, put it in the number-one cylinder. Make sure the safety lanyard is disconnected, so you don't make any spark as you do the compression check. Now we're ready to crank the engine over. We have 125 on that cylinder, and we have about 130 on this one. Lenny: So Chris, one was 125 and one was 130, and I know you're looking for those numbers to be close together, right? Chris: That's correct, as long as they're within 15 percent, that's acceptable. OK, now we install the new spark plugs. And, let's re-fill the lower unit. Lenny, could i get you to trim this down level so we can get the correct amount of oil in? Thank you. Now, you just pump it up until oil comes out of the top hole. You also want to clear the tip of the magnet of any metal debris before putting the screw back in. And now, we're going to grease the zerk fittings. Then we're going to remove the prop, inspect it for any fishing line, and grease it. Lenny: If anyone has any questions about how to do this, we do have a How to Change a Boat Propeller video in the boats.com video library. Now, why would you be concerned if you saw fishing line wrapped around there? Chris: Fishing line can cut into the lower unit seal and cause the seal to fail, letting water into the lower unit. Lenny: And that could cause catastrophic damage. Chris: Definitely. We also have a zinc in bad shape to replace, and we need to change the fuel-water separator in the boat.

We had a mad rush to stretch our Dyneema on the special apparatus we had built in the garden. We had to finish before we left Manchester, and the shrouds were not finished until less than a week before we moved. These shrouds and stays were both much longer and thicker than we have done before, that meant big challenges for our garden rig. We are now living aboard full-time and this work had to be done if we are going to be able to get our main mast up. Slowly sailing my 2010 Precision 18 sailboat at mid-day in very light winds on a beautiful Rocky Mountain lake. This episode features very light air sailing (aka: "ghosting") along the beautiful southeastern shore of the reservoir where I discover a new hazard just below the surface. With it's shoal draft keel, the Precision 18 can easily access shallow waters...as long as you remember to raise the centerboard! I have hit underwater obstructions with the 4'3" deep centerboard before, and it just bounces over them (as long as you are moving forward). It's not a pleasant experience though. This episode also shows off the Precision 18's superior light air sailing capabilities which come from the boat's "highest in class" sail area to displacement (SA/disp) ratio of 21.81. This episode features plenty of blue mountain skies, rocky shoreline, and gorgeous mountain views. Since Wendy left, I decide to head to Dakar Senegal for boat maintenance. And it was a good decision, but one that required some Mc Gyver ingenuity to patch things up on the engine which had sprung a leak in the cooling system. No engine is not a problem with a sailboat, unless ther is little wind. To get around that problem, I hoisted my huge spinnaker sail. Fantastic until we got hit by a squall. Jump on board and watch closely how we cross the English Channel twice and set out to cross the Bay of Biscay where we face wind speeds more than 30 knots and waves beyond four meters. We fight sail problems, a clogged toilet, engine troubles and see how we almost set fire on board our boat. More than 900nm pure adventure. #bluewatersailing #volvooceanrace #sailingcelina # diy #blauwassersegeln #saillife
In this episode 330 we make the big decision to remove the gearbox off of our Yanmar inboard diesel engine because we are convinced that the knocking noise is coming from the box. We drive the boat into the shallows off the beach to remove the drive leg so we can remove the gearbox and accidently run aground. We are no mechanics so will we be able to take the gearbox apart and solve the problem. Thank you to all our subscribers, without you the channel would not exist! We are Eric, Kimberley, and Distin. We are from Alaska. We started our adventures in Alaska on our Nordhavn 55. We sold her and are now beginning our adventures on a new to us Nordhavn 50. We made it to Maine! This week we leave Belfast, Maine to anchor in Cradle Cove. We do a deep dive into how our life raft actually works. Good to know in an emergency! We then explore the Fox Islands Thorofare, Seal Bay, and circumnavigate North Haven Island then anchor up in Rockland Harbor. Join is aboard our Nordhavn 50, as we explore the rugged, wild coast of Maine, in search of the perfect remote anchorage and occasionally visiting a town or two. From fog–shrouded islands to hidden coves only accessible by boat, this journey takes us deep into some of the most beautiful and untouched, cruising grounds in New England. Drop us a comment below if you know of a remote anchorage we should visit. We’ll take you behind the scenes to see how we manage real-life boating situations—from maintenance issues to steering failures—and offer tips for anyone planning to live aboard or buy a Nordhavn. Facing the challenges of solo sailing as a female sailor, I navigated the highs and lows of single-handed sailing while tackling DIY boat repair projects, from engine fixes to full boat refits on a budget. My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog. Now, I’m exploring a new chapter, having jumped aboard my partner’s Hallberg Rassy Rasmus with Boga and his Australian Kelpie, Jango. Together, we face the unique dynamics and challenges of sailing as a couple, balancing off-grid life, sustainable sailing, and the demands of long-term cruising. If you can remember, back when I started this project, I was working full-time as a route setter at a local rock climbing gym. I largely set climbing aside while I built Arabella, but my goal has always been to sail Arabella to remote places where the climbing is steep and wild. Nova Scotia is not that place…but Blow Me Down—a 2,000’+ cliff face in Devil’s Bay on the south coast of Newfoundland—is. And that’s what we’re training for, starting now. I start with a mock trad lead, just getting used to having the weight of my gear on my hips and moving on the wall, and then we start blasting around to as many local crags as we can. Then, a special visitor arrives: Aaron. You remember Aaron. He was 9 years old when he started “interning” at Acorn to Arabella. He joined just on our very first motor out of Mattapoisett Harbor after launch. And now he’s here to adventure and explore from the decks of the boat he helped build. Aaron and his mom are also rock climbers, so we bring them out to Shannon Island for some oceanside climbing. Aaron sinks his teeth into a new project—climbing a route named, ‘There will be blood’, and Akiva curls up and gets comfy in his very own cave. Their visit goes by too fast, and soon we were talking about when their next trip might be—snowboarding in Newfoundland this winter? We bid Aaron adieu… …and within 24-hours, Nova Scotia closed the outdoors due to wildfire risk. No more climbing. No hiking or trail running or mountain biking. No anything in the woods. So, now what? Looks like it might be time to mosey onward towards the Bras D’or Lakes and, ultimately, Newfoundland. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! Jewell Island Maine was exactly that - a jewel of a sailing anchorage. We explored World War bunkers and towers, spent an evening cooking lobsters with the Jewell Island caretaker, hiked the Maine Island trails, found Buoy Beach, Smugglers Cove and Pass, learned how to land your dinghy for 10 ft tides, and threw out our first Maine message in a bottle. From Richmond Island Maine, we travelled directly to Jewell Island in Casco Bay. We anchored safely in the cove, hiked beautiful trails through World War II lookout towers and bunkers, visited Buoy Beach & Smuggler’s Cove. We enjoyed lobster with the Jewell Island caretaker and his brother, and dropped a message in a bottle that later turned up on the mainland in Phippsburg - 60 miles away. Special thanks for information from Charlie the caretaker of Jewell Island for Maine Island Trail Association. mita.org There were (2) 6" mortar shell guns and a bunker between them in WWII. Tall towers with multi-level telescopes to spot U-boats. There were some 400 men on this tiny island looking for U-boats. If they spotted one they would tell the nearby island with the same telescopes and then triangulate the U-boat position and give the coordinates to the guns to fire on them. Apparently no U-boats were ever seen and there is question whether the guns were ever fired, even for practice. We had a fantastic evening with Charlie and his brother Marty on Little Jewell Island. Charlie is the caretaker and does a fabulous job of maintaining the beauty of the island. Charlie asked if we'd like a couple of lobsters and then invited us to the caretaker house for dinner. What a treat. Charlie lives there May to September in the one room house with a rain barrel for water and solar/210ah battery to power lights and his computer. And he has the best view on Little Jewell Island. Thanks Charlie, Marty and Maine Island Trail Association for a special evening. This is a catch-up video of a couple of weekends when we tried to prepare to fit a couple of knees to take the loads from the main mast starboard cap shroud and it's dyneema chainplate. We broke tools and it took far too long. We have a frequently updated blog at https://sustainablesailing.net with membership options and a weekly newsletter at £2 per month for Early Bird Supporters. Our free Sustainable Sailing book is at: https://sustainablesailing.codeberg.page/ Or visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for great hoodies, t-shirts and bags. When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all-electric (motor, cooking etc). This episode discusses a recent drowning death of a paddleboarder at my small Colorado mountain lake. This is the 10th water recreation death of 2025 in Colorado. The last few years have been extremely dangerous with more people visiting the lakes and more frequent extreme weather. In 2022, Colorado set a new record for water recreation deaths with 42 recorded for the season. In both 2023 and 2024 there were 32 water recreation related deaths each year across the state. In this latest incident, the 33-year old male victim was not wearing a life vest or personal flotation device (PFD) and was thrown off his board by heavy winds and large waves. Anyone who enjoys water sports needs to have the proper safety gear and pay close attention to the weather. Don't put yourself at a disadvantage when the unexpected happens!
