It has been a challenging start to our 2025 sailing season. After a nervous ride up to Wave Pointe Marina at the end of May and a dockside pull from the Marina staff we made it into our slip. A major impediment in addition to the lower water levels was the onslaught of excessive weed growth. While the Marina treated the weeds to try to eradicate them they held us at the slip for 3 weeks. We tried to back out of the slip last week but got stuck again. This week we made it out of the slip into the fairway dragging a huge clump of weeds. But we did make it out. Back on the water and sails up! Thanks for watching. Please remember to give us a LIKE and provide a comment. Also, if you haven't done so, please SUBSCRIBE. It all helps our channel. That's our only ask. Thanks again. We appreciate your support. All the best. Pura Vida! Join us as we continue with the replacement of our prop shaft and cutlass bearing on our custom aluminum sailboat while hauled out in Conception Bay South, Newfoundland. Rather than a how-to DIY, we show you what not to do and the challenges we faced and how we resolved them to splash and continue cruising the beautiful rugged coastline of Newfoundland filled with wildlife as we continue on the Viking Route to Greenland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. 🔧 Repairing Cracked Lapstrake Planks with Epoxy | Traditional Wooden Boat Repair In this episode of Nomad Boatbuilding, Mark Reuten tackles cracks in a traditionally-built Acorn dinghy using time-tested techniques paired with West System epoxy. This classic wooden boat, once built at the Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre, suffered sun damage during dry storage—leading to several split and cracked lapstrake planks. Mark walks through a careful repair using Dutchmen (splines), epoxy filling, and heat-assisted saturation for tight hairline cracks. With a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern epoxy methods, this is an excellent deep dive into wooden boat repair for anyone restoring or maintaining traditional planked hulls. ▶️ In this video, you’ll learn: When and how to use splines to reinforce cracked planks How to flood-checks with unthickened epoxy Tips for using heat to thin epoxy without weakening it How to stop cracks from spreading When to choose spline vs. fill-and-seal techniques Smart clamping and jigging techniques for awkward repairs Why grain orientation and end-grain saturation matter This video is the first of a two-part series focused on bringing this traditional dinghy back to life. Sailing solo, making music, recording videos, editing and creating content all by self. on top of this trying to keep up with maintenance, or like now even taking on a big project. I can assure you it's not exactly a lazy lifestyle. But I am living my dream, and I enjoy sharing it unfiltered and without any scripts with all of you. No drama, no exaggerated BS! Only what is really going on, either while sailing, or true stories from real people. No fluff, no clickbait. So to experience a small channel like mine still gains new subscribers every single day is something I really appreciate and are most thankful to experience. So a big thank you from me 🙏🏻

This week, I move the boat and drop anchor in Terence Bay—which is surrounded by some of Nova Scotia’s best climbing areas. But Robin is still making her way back to Canada with the truck and all of our climbing gear. My rock climbing stoke will have to wait just a few more days… To get into Terence Bay, I had to navigate a narrow channel on the high end of a rising tide—otherwise we would strike bottom on some rough sounding rocks. It was disconcerting to be able to see bottom in the most shallow sections of the cut, but I made it through without seeing anything less than 4’ under our keel. Terence Bay is another beautiful anchorage. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. Everything in Nova Scotia has been beautiful. Quiet, well-protected, and filled with little islands for Akiva to explore. While I wait for Robin, I dig into our Nova Scotia rock climbing guidebook and find the best and most convenient crags around. There is some bouldering and trad climbing pretty much right at the anchorage, and I decide to go scout out the climbing so we know just where to go as soon as Robin gets back. I also take the opportunity to tackle some plumbing projects on board: getting our shower installed. To do this, I needed to run hot water to the shower, hook the shower pan into the gray water tank, and seal the shower pan. Our pressurized solar shower has been fine, but with cooler weather on the horizon, having a hot shower will be a nice treat! I wrestle the plumbing together, and viola! We have a shower! Robin returns, and we waste no time—we head out to explore Sorrow’s End, a small and scenic rock climbing crag about a mile away from our anchorage. Despite some interesting navigational instructions, we find the crag…and are humbled by our fitness. We have some training to do… -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Seguin Island Maine was our next stop, where we took photos of a sunrise wedding on a lobster boat, hiked the trails and toured the lighthouse with a rare fresnel lens still in operation. Our journey to Seguin Island from Jewell Island was just a short hop - 15 miles - on a reasonable weather day with the sun shining upon arrival. Anchoring in the bay is a bit of a challenge, so they have mooring balls there for our use. We actually ended up using two mooring balls - one in front and one in back, so we wouldn’t swing into the rocks - or the other 2 boats in the harbor. Catamarans tend to swing around differently than monohulls, so we are always watchful of that. Stephen’s nautical wedding photography did a wonderful job capturing the wedding from the water. They brought their own photographer, but she was on the lobster boat with no way to get shots from the water. This couple was from Texas, and were not in the lobster business, but chose this wedding venue anyway. Stephen’s pay? Two Maine lobsters! We then hiked the Seguin Island trails and visited the lighthouse with the island’s caretaker, Lee. Wonderful island to visit. The trails are challenging, and some are not even trails, but rock paths along the ocean that you just “scurry over”, according to Lee. Easy for Maine folks, not so easy for us Southerners. Welcome to another episode of Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States with your hosts Bela Musits and Mike Malekoff. In this special episode, we take you aboard a Hunter 44 Deck Salon as we continue our northbound journey along the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW), sailing from Oriental, North Carolina to Belhaven, North Carolina. ⚓ Trip Overview This episode is part of a multi-part series documenting our real-time relocation of Mike’s Hunter 44 DS from Brunswick, Georgia to Burlington, Vermont. On this leg of the journey, we leave the charming harbor town of Oriental, NC, often referred to as the "Sailing Capital of North Carolina," and navigate the scenic but sometimes challenging ICW en route to Belhaven, NC. 🌊 ICW Navigation Challenges & Cruising Life We dive into the nitty-gritty of planning and executing a day’s sail on the ICW. From swing bridges and shifting shoals to narrow channels and wind conditions, Bela and Mike break down the critical considerations for this route. You'll hear about how they adjusted plans after a false start, what anchoring strategies they used, and how they coordinate marina stops. 🛥️ Life Aboard a Hunter 44 Deck Salon As seasoned cruisers know, not every moment on board goes according to plan. Hear candid reflections on engine maintenance, fuel management, and dealing with fatigue after a long day under sail. Mike shares what it’s like being back on the water after a long hiatus, while Bela gives insights from years of cruising experience on this type of sailboat. 📍 Marinas & Anchorages in North Carolina We share firsthand tips about key stops along this stretch of the ICW, including pros and cons of different marina facilities, availability of fuel, and local dining options. Belhaven/Dowery Creek emerges as a highlight—not just for its accessibility—but also its cruiser-friendly atmosphere. 🧭 Cruiser Takeaways Whether you're planning your first ICW passage or looking for updates on marina options and waterway conditions, this episode offers valuable firsthand knowledge. Learn why it’s important to remain flexible with departure times, how to navigate strong wind gusts in open stretches, and why daylight planning is crucial in the remote portions of the ICW. 🎧 Recorded Onboard All audio was recorded either on the water or while docked—bringing you the real sounds of cruising life. You’ll feel like you're right there aboard the Hunter 44, hearing the water, the marina ambiance, and the authentic sailor banter between Bela and Mike. We are now living aboard full-time as we prepare to launch our electric-powered 1977 Rival 38 Centre Cockpit Ketch. This is a specialised video as Jane gives practical tips on locking brummel eye splices in 12mm Dyneema. Our mizzen mast has been up for 8 months with all DIY 9mm Dyneema rigging. We have now made and stretched all the 12mm dyneema rigging for our main mast (2 backstay, 2 cap shrouds, 4 lower shrouds, 1 forestay). We found the technique that worked for 9mm dyneema did not work for 12mm and so have had to adapt. We have a frequently updated blog at https://sustainablesailing.net with membership options and a weekly newsletter at £2 per month for Early Bird Supporters. Our free Sustainable Sailing book is at: https://sustainablesailing.codeberg.page/ Or visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for great hoodies, t-shirts and bags. When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). The saga of getting BOOMERANG out of Green Bay and up to Wave Pointe Marina for the 2025 sailing season continues. When I left The Boat Yard on the Fox River in Green Bay I was not overly confident that I could get in to our slip at Wave Pointe Marina on Little Sturgeon Bay because of the lower water levels on Lake Michigan and the Bay of Green Bay this summer. We’ve sailed some stunning coastlines… but there’s something different about this stretch of the wild Pacific. It’s remote, still, and overwhelmingly beautiful. Towering pines, glassy anchorages, and misty mornings set the tone for a quiet week afloat — just us, our tiny floating home, and the rugged edge of the world. 🧡 Thanks for being here — if you enjoy these slower-paced, cinematic-style episodes, let us know in the comments! 〰️〰️〰️〰️ Episode 172 I Chapter 6: Touching the Edge of the Wild [Pacific Northwest] 〰️〰️〰️〰️ 👪 Join the Tribe on our Patreon / teulutribe 👕Pick up some Merch https://www.teulutribe.com/ 📷 Find us over on Instagram / teulutribe 💬 Connect with us on Facebook / teulutribe 🛠️ Teulu's always trying to break herself, our Amazon Wishlist is here https://www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/... ☕ Treat us to a Cup of Tea https://www.buymeacoffee.com/teulutribe 📧 Business Enquires TeuluTribe@lighthouseagents.com ☑️ Subscribe for a new video every Monday About Our Boat Name pronunciation (Tay-Lee), its Welsh, feel free to call her Too-Loo/Te-a-lu/Teaugukug/Tulu 1987 Colvic Victor Ketch 40ft/12m Two Cabins Encapsulated Keel and Skeg-Hung Rudder 13 Tonnes About Us We are Becka and Zach, a couple who, in 2020, dreamt of sailing off into the big blue. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn't have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane. However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on. Day 9, played with Casper and did some boat maintenance. The Bravest Dog in the World Is About to Change It. Help Us Get There. I’m Kimmer O’Reilly — sailor, survivor, and founder of a mission that shouldn’t be possible. Two-time blood cancer nearly took my life. When I survived, I expected joy. What came instead was an identity crisis. I didn’t know who I was anymore — just that the old me was gone. Then came Casper — my service dog, my best friend, my reason to fight forward. Now, Casper and I are doing something no one believes can be done: a nonstop solo circumnavigation of the globe… starting from the wrong side. We’re sailing east, into the wind and current, through the Southern Ocean and past the Cape of Good Hope — proving that after cancer, life isn’t over. It can be better than it ever was. But we’re not just breaking records. We’re launching a nonprofit to help cancer survivors rediscover purpose, identity, and joy. This GoFundMe isn’t just to keep our sails full. It’s to build something that lasts long after we return. Donate today — not just to help Casper and me sail around the world, but to help thousands of survivors believe they can start again. Let’s show the world what’s possible. 👉 https://bit.ly/BravestDogInTheWorld
Left the boat in Lombok… and traded sails for surf, rice fields, and a bit of Bali chaos. After hopping aboard a ferry that felt more “adventure” than “transportation,” we made it to Bali in one slightly rattled piece. What followed was a weekend full of surprises: We wandered through the stunning Ubud rice terraces — yes, it’s crowded, yes, there are lines for photos… but the natural beauty still shines through and makes it all worth it. Tried Kopi Luwak, the famously expensive coffee made from civet poop — surprisingly smooth, if you don’t think about the process too much. Sampled a full flight of local teas — a mixed bag for the taste buds, but some were genuinely delicious (and the views didn’t hurt). Highlight of the trip? Surfing at Kuta Beach. Between the wipeouts and accidental nose-dives, it turned out to be the most fun we had all weekend. If you’re a sailor leaving your boat in Lombok and wondering what Bali’s got beyond the beach bars — this is your sign to explore inland. Just maybe bring ... an open mind. Living on a boat is an emotional rollercoaster. Why is it every time we haul out things don't go as planned... www.sailingnandji.com We have had an amazing last 15 months, sailing over 10,000 nautical miles, crossing the vast Indian Ocean, exploring some seriously remote places, traversing the Mozambique Channel and flying down the wild coast of south Africa. Through every storm and every swell, our beloved Tayana, Nandji 2, has been our steadfast and sturdy home. But life on a boat comes with one constant: maintenance. So we’ve hauled her out here in the breathtaking town of Knysna to tackle some much-needed out-of-water projects and get her ready for our next big challenge: sailing around the most southern tip of Africa, the infamous Cape of Storms and then into the mighty Atlantic Ocean. We chose to do the haul-out here with our good mate Dave, partly to delay our farewell of this incredible place. Knysna has truly captured our hearts, and saying goodbye won’t be easy. But the sea is calling, and before we set sail once again… it’s time to get to work. Here's why it is super important to make your bed on your boat. It sets the tone for the day. A well made boat bed sets your mind right at ease that the boat is in good order - ready to sail at top speed and performance. If your bed is made, your boat is likely well maintained as well. In this episode, we wrap up a few long-overdue boat projects while waiting to sail into the Maddalena National Park. First up is finally mounting our Gen3 Starlink dish—a job that’s been on hold since we bought it almost a year ago in Greece. After sitting on the coachroof all this time, it’s time to give it a proper home on our solar arch. That means cutting the cable, feeding it through the arch and conduits, and joining it back together—fingers crossed it still works! Meanwhile, Jude brings out her trusty sewing machine to tackle a few smaller jobs, including a Velcro retaining strap for our swim platform ladder. Just another week of life aboard Helios, making sure everything is ready for the adventures ahead. Join us on our journey as we continue to rebuild, refit and prepare our Formosa 51 Sailboat for our continued cruising journey. We have always loved the Formosa, bought one (on a bit of a whim) late in 2014, moved aboard this one right away and started to do our refit while living board. We are avid fans of Cruising Outpost and Good Ole Boat (Good Old Boat) magazines and love the ideas we get from them.
