WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ANCHOR! Join this Sailing Family for a fun filled week onboard on the Gold Coast of Australia! The boat jobs and maintenance continues as we become more familiar with our new floating home, SV Shining Light, a 50 ft Aluminium Catamaran by Lock Crowther. This week we have heavy rain which is making the tide rip through the anchorage. Mix the strong tide with heavy winds and all the boats sail around their anchors and we get too close to another sailboat, haul the anchor, and look for a calmer spot to drop the pick. We have anchor trouble and we can’t drop the anchor! After all the boat jobs are completed, we head ashore to South Stradbroke Island and explore the island and discover rubbish bins. The ability of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team to extract the absolute maximum from every opportunity on the water was again on show out on an afternoon session in the Bay of Cagliari after the team had waited for the strong Mistral morning conditions to subside. Docking out at almost 3.30pm, the Italians had a clear testing schedule on their LEQ12 that has been some three weeks in the shed undergoing maintenance and upgrades whilst the team got to grips with the AC40. Speaking afterwards Gilberto Nobili, the Operations Manager for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli was pleased with the day saying: “It was like we had the ending of a few days with the Mistral, so we got the end of it, it was a glamour day on the water not much waves and nice breeze. We went back in the water with our LEQ12 and very good, very productive.” Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. For Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli it was ‘one of those days’ out on a choppy Bay of Cagliari with technical issues curtailing the sailing day without a tack or a gybe thrown in anger. Almost immediately after exiting the harbour, an electronic issue was identified, and the technicians came aboard quickly to work below decks. Speaking afterwards Marco Donati, the electronics supremo within Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli saw positives in the day as he described the issues, saying: “The issue was a little thing, but it just takes time to fix it because there’s a lot of stuff that you have to remove to access to that…it was something that we couldn't sail without, so let's say it was not a major thing that will stop us sailing but, because we are not in a regatta, you want to have the data to analyse so sometimes it doesn't really make sense to go sailing without getting the data to analyse what you want to try. Otherwise, it's a waste of time. So, we knew that the breeze was getting up, but we wanted to try the exercise of fixing something outside (the harbour) and it's also something that we should train for, for when we arrive at a regatta and understand not sailing-wise but maintenance-wise what we can do outside (on the water). So, it has been, by the way, a good exercise and we learn from that too.” Section 41. With Ruggero Tita and Vittorio Bissaro both away sailing Nacra 17 ‘s in Palma it was the turn of Jacopo Plazzi, the 49er ace, to partner with Francesco Bruni on the first day back on the water for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli’s LEQ12 after an extensive ten-day period of maintenance, refit, and upgrade. Immediately out of the shed the newly declared port foil could be seen and offered, perhaps, a distinct clue as to the design direction that the Italians are pursuing. The day was all about early foil evaluation with long runs extracting both the performance and media data that the designers and engineers will be comparing against their computer modelling. Speaking about the process to bring the new foil into commission, design chief Horacio Carabelli commented: “It's a long process, the design of these wings, not only from the hydro point of view but from the manufacturing point of view, it's pretty long. So this month we have worked pretty hard from the engineering point of view and putting things together and today was more a commissioning day for it so we have a lot to learn about it for the next weeks. It’s pretty important that it’s coming along as the ‘last card’ that we have to play on it so pretty happy with today. I think it was very, very, efficient and we got the numbers and expectations. We had all the engineers onboard also taking a look at it, so pretty happy overall.” Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. Setting out into dense Pensacola midday fog, the NYYC American Magic Team had a clear focus today (Tuesday) to push their new starboard foil outside of the comfort zone and start imagining real-life race scenarios that the team will face in the upcoming pre-regattas later this year. Much attention was being paid, in relatively marginal conditions, to stalling out ‘America’ by dropping to the bustle and then re-powering on quickly and that transition from low to high power was perhaps more of a sail trim and crew positioning exercise than anything foil driven. Late in the afternoon, ‘America’ stopped and sent a diver down to inspect the starboard foil arm with crew members seen pointing at and inspecting the patch where it’s presumed the innovative actuator is housed and speaking afterward David Oliver a member of the American Magic design team gave little away but did say: “We were just assessing the condition of the boat, you know they're complex machines and we have to be sure we're on top of all the maintenance, everything going on inside the boat and outside and so if anything potentially looks out of the ordinary we always want to make sure we're doing a full assessment to avoid any bigger problems down the road .” Section 41. EP 36 – New Dingy “Dingleberry” Sailing Free Spirit. So we had to get a new dingy since the 1st one had too many leaks and tears and was not able to repair any of them. After a scheduled maintenance break for a week, the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team assembled back in Cagliari to be greeted by perfect conditions that more than blew the cobwebs away out on the Bay of Angels. As Spring gets sprung in Southern Europe, the mercury hit 16 degrees Celsius in the late afternoon and the breeze built steadily from the south-east offering the Italians a sublime training session where they had the pedal to the floor as if they had never been away. Martin Jacoby, the CFD Specialist Engineer for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli was interviewed after a very entertaining sailing session and confirmed that few changes had been made to the set-up of the Italian LEQ12 in the past week, saying: “Last week was a week of maintenance, and this was a sailing day to do some checks that everything is doing good and that was the case, and we are very happy with that.” Asked about the new markers on the port side foil and possible changes to the foil identified by the Recon Team, Jacoby commented: “No, we were just doing some maintenance there and taking a better understanding of how the foil works and the flow behaviour.” Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away.
