While you might enjoy doing work on your boat engine yourself, when it comes to the 100-hour outboard maintenance check, it's a good idea to take your boat and outboard engine to a pro for service. But whether you hire a mechanic to do the service or do it yourself, it should be done using the manufacturer recommendations. Each outboard is different, but Benny Quinn, master technician from Annapolis Boat Sales, shows you some of the things your mechanic will check or do during this critical 100-hour service milestone: lubricate the grease fittings on the engine, check the power trim and tilt fluid and for any leaks in the power trim and tilt system, make sure your connectors are tight and to spray them down with silicone spray to keep moisture and corrosion at bay, check the shift and the throttle cable linkages, retorque your bolts and fasteners, check engine mounts and steering brackets for extra play or leaks, inspect or replace spark plugs as necessary, change your gearcase and powerhead oils, make sure your fuel lines are tight and not leaking, check for dry rot or cracks, replace your fuel-water separator, run a really good fuel stabilizer, make sure that your mounting bolts are not loose, corroded, or damaged in any way, check that the head of the bolt is not sucking into the transom and cracking the gelcoat, make sure your prop and your skeg are in good shape, check the cowling for nests, make sure the boat hits max RPM, make sure that your telltale is putting out water, inspect or replace the water pump impeller as necessary, grease the dry shaft at the grease points on the splines and the bushing areas, check for fishing line behind the prop before the seal, make sure you grease the splines, the prop shaft before you reinstall the prop with a brand new cotter pin, and grease your shift shaft. If you replace an antenna or other item topsides on your boat, you'll be left with an unsightly hole. But did you know you can easily fix the damaged gelcoat yourself? Yes, really! In this video we'll show you how to make a boat gelcoat repair on vertical surface. We've already covered how to do gelcoat repair on flat surfaces (link in video). Repairing topsides gelcoat is very similar but requires a few extra techniques to keep the gelcoat from running. BoatUS Magazine associate editor Mark Corke shows you how to make a seamless gel coat repair on your own boat. If you can sand and use a paintbrush, you can easily do this It just requires a few tools and materials and a little time and patience to get a professional looking finish. By using this predeparture checklist before taking your boat out, you'll minimize potential problems that may leave you calling for a tow. In addition to whatever your four-stroke outboard engine's owners manual says, Benny says that before you take your boat out, you should first check the oil level. Then ensure that the mounting bolts are secure but not too tight as to crack the gelcoat on the back side of the transom. Check your propeller and lower unit, and finally check the cowling to ensure that no birds have made nests inside.
