As Darroch’s IGCSE exams draw closer, our family finds itself split between two very different worlds. Woody is doing his best to cope with life in Langkawi, where even something as simple as defrosting sausages seems to turn into a full-day saga. Between the heat, the island pace, and his ever-creative kitchen experiments, every meal becomes its own adventure. Meanwhile, we’re in Kuala Lumpur trying to keep a steady routine while revision notes take over the house. Just as the focus finally settles in, the call to prayer echoes through the city yet again—beautiful, but perfectly timed to break concentration at the most dramatic moments. Although our surroundings couldn’t be more different, the challenges on both sides are equally frustrating in their own ways. If you’re preparing for exams, managing family life across locations, or simply enjoy watching others survive the chaos, you might find something familiar here. Thanks for joining us on this unpredictable ride. Yoga, Propane Tanks, Kama Sutra, Laundry, Geodes, Gretsch Guitars, Holiday Reflections and a Q & A session Huge geodes and The Great Gretsch Sound exhibit are some of the things we saw on our day trip. Continuing to relax a bit from DIY projects, we do some routine maintenance chores. Bringing up some lingerie to hang in the cockpit, Karen finishes up the laundry. Steve checks out the propane tanks on board. There are two 20 pound propane tanks on Isabella. One of the tanks has a bit too much rust and will be replaced while the other looks great. Karen takes advantage of the nice weather and does a bit of yoga on the stern. With the holiday season upon us, we reflect on holiday traditions in the past and what the upcoming celebrations look like now. They're a different than when we were living in a house yet still enjoyable. Plus our children will visit soon, party time for sure! We love reading and answering viewers comments and thought we’d share a couple of interesting and funny ones we’ve received over time. Let us know in the comments for this video if you enjoyed the Q & A session. Hello to our subscribers, you know we love y’all and thank you for being part of our virtual crew. 🤗😘. Hi, I’m Camille — and this is Shelly 🐾 We live full-time on our sailboat Stella Overboard in the middle of Malaysia… and right now, it’s just us girls because Jesse is away doing FIFO work in the Australian mines. So what does a day actually look like living alone on a boat in Southeast Asia? Well… a lot happens. 😅 Today I’m: ⛽️ Filling our water tanks and running the engine 💧 Filtering marina water so nothing nasty grows in our tanks 🧽 Cleaning and UV-protecting all our clears (Malaysia’s sun is no joke) 🚪 Fixing the bathroom door after our holding tank exploded (yes… exploded) ❄️ Defrosting our freezer for the millionth time 🛠️ Attempting multiple DIY repairs with Shelly as my “assistant” ☕️ Making coffee on our new espresso machine 💨 Cleaning dusty fans, polishing surfaces, and keeping our tiny home livable 🌧 Enjoying the rain at the end of monsoon season 🎥 And ending the night at the Langkawi night market with friends Boat life isn’t glamorous — it’s real, messy, nonstop work… But every day I get better, stronger, and a little more proud of the life we’re building. Thanks for being here and following along our sailing story. #yelken #teknedeyaşam #macera #gezi #panama #bakımonarım #teknebakımı ———————————————————————————- Follow us on Instagram /basak mireli To see where we are https://share.garmin.c... From a failed inverter to a fresh Code Zero halyard splice — plus an osprey’s fish mess and our new pet lettuce — boat life delivered everything this week. This week aboard Chasing Serenity we deal with several unexpected problems — and a few hilarious surprises. One of our Victron inverters fails, so I tear it apart and attempt a partial repair to keep our electrical system running. We also splice a brand-new halyard for our Code Zero to replace the one I cut. While working on deck, we discover an osprey left behind a mess of fish parts… and somewhere along the way we end up with a family “pet lettuce.” Boat life is unpredictable. The biggest concern this week: we find water inside our saildrive oil, meaning more repairs are ahead. We talk through what we found and what our plan is for diagnosing and fixing the problem. ⚓ In this episode: • Victron Multiplus Inverter failure + partial internal repair • Code Zero halyard splice • Osprey “gift” on deck • Our new pet lettuce • Water in saildrive oil (Volvo Penta 150S-C) • Real liveaboard life with a sailing family 📍 Location: St. Augustine, FL, sailing south aboard our Royal Cape 500 catamaran We’re a family of four living aboard full-time, sharing the real highs and lows of catamaran life — maintenance, repairs, upgrades, and everyday family moments at sea.
Let’s cut to it: The middle class can't afford sailboats anymore. Prices for new and used cruisers have more than doubled since 2012 (e.g., Bavaria 37 now $375k), pushing the dream out of reach for regular people. This isn't inflation—it's market exclusion. This video is a frank analysis of why the sailing lifestyle is becoming reserved for the wealthy. We dive into: The Massive Price Gap: Why the average price for a 36-45 ft boat is now over $327,000. The Vanishing Cruiser: What happened to the sturdy, affordable 30-35 ft boats? Hidden Costs That Sink Budgets: Why slip fees, insurance, and maintenance are the real financial traps. The Generational Cliff: Boomers are selling their boats, but the next generation can't afford to buy them. Finally, we give a practical blueprint for Keeping the Dream Alive on a Budget, proving that while a shiny 40-footer is out, the water is still waiting for those with grit and a small boat (like the Flicka 20 or Albin Vega). ⏱️ CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro: The Dream is Drifting Out of Reach 00:46 1. Sailboats Then vs Now: The Price Gap 02:34 2. The Disappearing Affordable Cruiser 04:13 3. Hidden Costs That Sink Your Budget 06:21 4. Boomers Selling, No One Buying 08:27 5. Keeping the Dream Alive on a Budget 10:35 Conclusion: Trade Comfort for Adventure (Approx) 🔔 Subscribe to the channel for more market breakdowns, budget cruising advice, and honest perspectives on the sailing life. 💬 Have you been priced out of sailing? Facing the challenges of solo sailing as a female sailor, I navigated the highs and lows of single-handed sailing while tackling DIY boat repair projects, from engine fixes to full boat refits on a budget. My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog. Now, I’m exploring a new chapter, having jumped aboard my partner’s Hallberg Rassy Rasmus with Boga and his Australian Kelpie, Jango. Together, we face the unique dynamics and challenges of sailing as a couple, balancing off-grid life, sustainable sailing, and the demands of long-term cruising. This week, he tackles a few key off-season projects—starting with some repairs on the tender, Victoria, and then heading up the mast to strip rigging and sails before haul-out. From corroded hardware and creative DIY fixes to winter rigging prep and a few lessons learned along the way, this episode captures the satisfying rhythm of winding down a sailing season. Steve also shares plans for winter boat projects, a call-out for a Sailrite sewing machine, and dreams of upgrading Arabella’s gear before spring. 🔎 Watch to see: • Replacing corroded latches and hinges in the tender • How to strip and organize running rigging for winter storage • Removing sails and preparing for shrink-wrap • Tips for off-season maintenance and planning • Steve’s wishlist for winter upgrades (including that elusive bronze winch!) As the season slows, it’s all about getting ready for the next adventure—and keeping Arabella in top shape for spring cruising. -------------------------- Episode 371 Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Start of a New Sailing Season | Grenada to Martinique (180nm). Midnight Mirage - You Only Live Once.
After 5 months ashore, I’m finally back at sea! This marks the start of a new sailing season - a 180 nautical mile passage from Grenada to Martinique for some yacht maintenance. It began with pouring rain, but soon the skies cleared and the Caribbean sun returned. The water turned crystal blue, the wind settled just ahead of the beam, and "Mirage" came alive again - reaching 9 to 10 knots most of the way. Honestly… I’m speechless. It felt so good to be sailing again! This short 5-minute video has no narration - just pure motion, sea, and music. 🎵 Music: “The Life You Want to Live Once” — Midnight Mirage, Radio Miami 85FM (1984 synth magic). Perfect vibes for a perfect sail. Next up: a few cool new upgrades and improvements I’m making to Mirage! Stay tuned. #SailingMirage #Amel50 #GrenadaToMartinique #SailingLife #CaribbeanSailing #SoloSailing #OceanFreedom
Let’s not sugarcoat it: some sailboats should’ve never been built. This is the list of the 10 WORST sailboats to buy—the floating disasters that will leave you broke, broken, or just plain stranded. We’re diving into the worst of the worst, exposing boats cursed by poor design, flimsy build quality, chronic rot, and awful sailing performance. We analyze why: The MacGregor 26X is the worst compromise between sail and power. The Irwin 38 and Hunter 37 Legend are famous for questionable structural integrity and rot. The Formosa 41 is built for show, not go, and the Bayliner Buccaneer 270 sails like a shed. Buying one of these "priced to sell" boats is the fastest way to turn your cruising dream into a maintenance nightmare. This vessel, Elizabeth Ruth, has been my entire world—from childhood dreams to a 40-hour work week on the water, plus every vacation stacked on top. I poured my soul into the complete rebuild and refit of every system, and she has been magnificent. Yet, moving on is perhaps the most difficult choice I've faced in years. It’s simply time to trade the helm for a new horizon and allow someone else the immense joy of caring for this incredible boat. ICW boating, shallow water navigation, Fort Pierce to Vero Beach — in today’s episode we motor up the Intracoastal Waterway with a broken depth transducer, making every mile sketchy as we pass through Vero Beach, Melbourne Beach and Eau Gallie. Along the way we spot playful dolphins and explore beautiful, well-kept neighbourhoods that show off the charm of Florida’s Space Coast. We stop to explore what each city has to offer before threading our way through a narrow channel into a quiet hurricane hole to hide from incoming strong winds and stormy weather. This episode covers my 6th outing in the new-to-me 1987 Precision 16 sailing dinghy I purchased locally for $800. This time I visit beautiful Aurora Reservoir in Aurora, Colorado. Aurora Reservoir is a city park in the City of Aurora, CO. The park features a sandy swim beach, nice 3 lane boat ramp, clean restroom facilities and nice picnic areas. The reservoir is electric motor and hand-powered watercraft only...no gas outboards permitted. The Precision 16 is a lightweight Stephen Seaton-designed un-ballasted centerboard sailing dinghy with a planing hull manufactured from 1982 until the mid 90s. It was superseded in 1995 by the smaller Jim Taylor-designed Precision 15 (P-15CB and P-15K). Subscribe and follow @ColoradoSailing on YouTube for more original sailing videos, gear, boat maintenance, sailing tips and travel content as I sail my Precision 18 trailer sailer and Precision 16 sailing dinghy in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota. #sailing #sailingdinghy #coloradosailing #mountainsailing #AuroraReservoir #sailingvideo

Remember the bearing we replaced in Vigo — the one we hoped would stop the squeaking and remove the play? Yeah… it didn’t. And when we finally dug into it again, we realised the brand new €500 bearing missed 0,5-1 mm. Which coursed the same noise, same play and same headache. So we secured the rudder (yes, again… in the water), tapped the old bearing back in and found a shipyard in Lagos who could actually help us. Luckily, a yard took us in and made a new custom bearing in just one day. A VERY snug fit — but that’s what we wanted. Now the big question is: Will this actually solve the problem? …or are we heading into Part 3? 👀 👉 What do you think — fixed or not fixed? #sailinglife #sailingaroundtheworld #sailingvlog #boatmaintenance #sailingcouple #diyboat #boatrepairs #sailboatlife #cruisinglife #sailingadventure #oceanlife #liveaboard #liveaboardlife #diy #shortoftheday #sailingcouple
This week aboard our sailboat, we made huge progress on the deck refit — but the weather had other plans. Our main goal was to prep and paint the rear deck, including the sugar scoops, helm stations, and transom alley. The process started strong: days of sanding, fiberglass repairs, fairing, and priming. Everything was ready for paint… until temperatures in Virginia dropped too low for proper curing. So for now, we’re calling it “good enough” with primer — the paint will have to wait until we reach warmer weather farther south. It’s not the finish we hoped for, but that’s real-life boat work for you. In between coats (and rain), we also tackled several smaller but important jobs: ⚓ Rebedding bolt rope rails to prevent leaks 🛠️ Rebedding safety rails for better security under sail 🔩 Replacing deck hatch latches for smoother operation Even with the setback, it’s satisfying to see progress — and we’re one step closer to having a freshly finished deck when spring returns, or we get south to warmer weather. ⛵ In This Episode: Deck prep & priming process Cold weather challenges in Virginia Rebedding rails & hatches Real-life DIY refit aboard our sailboat ☝More about us, our adventures, and how we do all this on our website. We’ve chosen to Roam the world by boat because, let’s face it, the most interesting path is rarely a straight line. As we learn to let go of our American drive to finish, and embrace the meandering routes across islands, oceans, continents, and people, we hope to gain a better sense of our world and our place in it. The crew navigates strong winds and rain during the haul-out, highlighting the critical role of proper Travel Lift sling placement. As the cold intensifies, they address a strange noise, discovering a nearby boat has dragged its anchor, emphasizing the importance of secure moorings in stormy weather. The episode also features essential boat maintenance, including the successful repair and reinstallation of their Walker Bay dinghy's tubes, a design praised for its dual functionality. A significant upgrade is made to the boat's electrical system with the replacement of an inefficient diode battery isolator with a modern Victron ArgoFet isolator. This repair involves troubleshooting complex wiring, ultimately ensuring the alternator correctly charges the boat's batteries. Beyond the technical aspects, the crew enjoys a delicious swordfish dinner, exploring new flavors and culinary experiences on board. The video concludes with reflections on the realities of boat life, embracing both the unexpected challenges and the rewarding moments of self-sufficiency and problem-solving at sea.
