I rowed out to my boat Wahine and found some good news - the bilge is dry and the battery is fully charged thanks to the sun. However, I discovered potential engine problems that could be basic maintenance issues or a fuel line problem. Additionally, my seawater intake might be clogged with barnacles since no seawater is coming out when I start the engine. You think a ship stops only in port? Surprise 😏 This is what it really looks like when a cargo ship’s Main Engine is stopped in the middle of the ocean. No traffic jams, no honking… just calm seas, silence, and a crew casually doing their job like it’s another day at the office. Stopped doesn’t always mean trouble — sometimes it’s maintenance, checks, or planned operations. Life at sea is peaceful, technical, and way cooler than you imagine 🌊⚙️ If you thought ships run non-stop… welcome to reality.

In this week's episode, I go back to the beginning of the season where I arrive at the marina to find an unexpectedly breezy day. While the forecast called for gusts below 15 mph, it was very windy when I arrived. Looking back at the weather data for the day, it was gusting well into the 20s all afternoon with a maximum gust of 28 mph. Since I had already made the long drive, I decided to make the best of it and head out onto the lake under a double-reefed mainsail only. I've solo sailed in these conditions many times and knew the boat would be able to handle it with a reefed mainsail. It was slow going, but as they say: "A bad day of sailing beats a good day of work!" Throughout the video I share tips, thoughts and observations about sailing in heavy winds under mainsail only. This day was a perfect example of the frustrations, challenges and excitement sailors face when sailing in the unpredictable winds of high-altitude mountain lakes. After nearly a year of planning and waiting, we finally begin building out the heart of our onboard electrical system ⚡⛵ In this episode, we tackle a major refit milestone by designing and installing the core power infrastructure for our catamaran. We’re building a native 24V and 48V electrical system, and the first big decision was relocating critical power equipment out of a deck locker that posed a serious water intrusion risk. Instead, we converted the forward captain’s berth/office into a dedicated utility room — safer, drier, and far more serviceable. To support the electrical gear, we built a custom structural wall using 1-inch Coosa board laminated with 1/4-inch fiberglass for strength and rigidity. As we mocked up the layout, we discovered that not everything would fit as planned — the large inverters had to be moved to an adjacent wall, forcing a rethink of the design before final installation. With the wall bonded in place using bolts and Sikaflex, we mounted a significant portion of our power system, including: Victron inverter and transformer Two battery chargers DC/DC charger 24V and 48V DC bus bars AC electrical panel(s) This Victron equipment has been stored away for nearly a year while other refit priorities took precedence, so finally getting everything mounted and positioned feels like a huge win. The system is coming together, and the next major step will be wiring and commissioning the power plant. This is volume 1 of two volumes which details the work done on the boat while in Anacortes in Sept/Oct 2025. This came after the trip to Alaska and upon return to Washington, before our run South to Mexico. There was extensive work carried out. Some planned and some not planned. For those who like to see the upgrades and maintenance work on a boat this is a perfect viewing opportunity.

This episode documents the removal of a leaking forward deck hatch aboard Paikea and the process of filling and structurally rebuilding the opening. The hatch over Harry’s bunk had been a long-term source of water ingress. Rather than replacing it like-for-like, we decided to remove the opening entirely and move ventilation to a side port light positioned under the gunwale, where it’s protected from direct rain and green water.
