Watch Part 1, where we shaped the foam core in preparation for the vacuum infusion process: https://youtu.be/PLaSOuteaYQ Following on from the last video, we're continuing to build custom carbon fiber tables for our sailing home. It's a project we started because the old rear cockpit table was yet another Leopard Catamarans / Robertson & Caine warranty fail, and the upstairs one had a design that could easily be improved to more functional in our daily lives as full-time liveaboard sailors. In this episode, straight from the hardstand in Trinidad, we get to vacuum bagging sections of the table. It's a new process to us, involving a variety of vacuum bagging supplies such as peel ply, sealant tape, bagging film, breather fabric, mold release, resin tubes and a vacuum pump, all to ensure the vacuum bagging process goes smoothly. The goal to infuse West Systems epoxy resin into the carbon fiber to create DIY catamaran tables that are strong, functional and light. As winter closes in on Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Arabella is almost ready to settle in for the season. With most of the harbor cleared out, it’s time for some of those quiet but satisfying projects that make cruising easier down the road. In this episode, Steve marks the anchor chains and rodes with red, white, and blue nylon tags, organizes the anchor locker for storage, and gives the boat a little extra attention after a busy season of sailing. Along the way, he reflects on what’s ahead—from off-season maintenance to winter adventures to plans for the spring journey down to the South Coast. Watch as Arabella transitions from adventure to upkeep, with plenty of practical boat life tips along the way—from DIY chain marking to locker organization and winter prep for liveaboards. 🔧 In This Episode: Preparing the anchor chain and rode for next season Cleaning and organizing the anchor locker Practical methods for marking chain lengths Troubleshooting condensation and winter sealing Reflections on a full year aboard and what’s next -------------------------- Episode #370 Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Learn more about why you a Marine Survey is important: https://catamaranguru.com/marine-survey-why-do-you-need-on A full survey and sea trial on the Catana OC50 Samurai, the proven performance catamaran that achieved line honours in the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (2024 ARC Rally). This behind the scenes look follows our team, the surveyor, and the buyers as they inspect the vessel on land and on the water, learn the handling characteristics of the OC50, and experience why this model has earned its reputation for speed, stability, and comfort. We begin at Loggerhead Marina for the initial inspection, followed by a detailed walkthrough of manoeuvring techniques, daggerboard use, throttle control, and close quarters handling. The buyers step behind the wheel for the first time, learning how quickly a performance catamaran responds and how easy it is to gain confidence with proper guidance. Keith and Matt provide practical instruction, safety tips, and real world examples of bridge etiquette, helm response, and best practices for new owners. The haul out reveals the underwater profile of the OC50, including the narrow bows, rudders behind the props, and performance focused hull shape. The surveyor conducts moisture testing, infrared thermography, and a full structural review. We discuss common findings, such as line damage to drive seals, the importance of clean running gear, and best maintenance habits for long term reliability. Once back on the water, the team heads out of Port Everglades for the offshore portion of the survey. The buyers experience the OC50 under sail, watch the mainsail drop cleanly into the bag, and see how quickly the Genoa deploys. Even in light conditions, the performance sails demonstrate how easily this boat can be operated, including by a short handed crew. This video is an excellent reference for anyone considering a catamaran purchase, preparing for a survey, or researching the Catana Ocean Class series. It highlights the real process, the importance of proper expectations, and the value of letting buyers feel the boat first hand. For anyone researching catamarans, preparing for a survey, or learning what to expect during a haul out and sea trial, this episode provides a clear look at the actual process and the practical reasons a survey is essential. 00:00 Survey day introduction 00:22 Marina briefing and survey overview 01:15 Manoeuvring lesson for new buyers 03:40 Daggerboard use for stability 05:10 Bridge etiquette and current rules 06:40 Haul out inspection 09:20 Surveyor findings and technical assessment 11:05 Underwater profile and performance features 13:10 Offshore sea trial 14:50 Sail handling demonstration 16:00 Final impressions Samurai (Samouraï) is a Catana Ocean Class 50, known for combining true performance with impressive liveaboard comfort. Narrow bows, balanced displacement, high performance sails, and a thoughtful interior layout make this model stand out among performance cruising catamarans. The ARC results speak for themselves, and the design continues to prove its capabilities under real conditions. Description The 2010 Lagoon 400 Owner’s Version is a 39.27 ft (≈12 m) cruising catamaran designed by naval architects Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot-Prévost (VPLP) and built by Lagoon, part of the Beneteau Group. It’s one of the most popular live-aboard catamarans of its decade — a comfortable, well-balanced vessel made for long-distance cruising rather than racing. Key Specifications Length overall: 39′ 3″ (≈12 m) Beam: 23′ 8″ (≈7.2 m) Draft: ≈4 ft (1.2 m) Displacement: ≈10,200 kg (22,500 lb) Hull & deck: Infused fiberglass sandwich construction Rig: Fractional sloop with optional square-top mainsail and code 0 bowsprit Engines: Twin Yanmar 30 hp or optional 40 hp Accommodation & Layout (Owner’s Version) The Owner’s Version offers a large master suite occupying one hull, with private head and shower, plus two guest cabins in the opposite hull. The saloon features wrap-around windows for 360° visibility, a bright galley on the starboard side, and a navigation station opposite. The cockpit and saloon connect seamlessly, creating a huge social space ideal for entertaining or living aboard. There’s ample storage throughout, and the headroom exceeds 2 m in most areas. Performance & Handling The Lagoon 400 is built for comfort and safety more than speed. In moderate winds (6–7 knots), she typically sails at 4.5–5 knots, and under power achieves around 7 knots with twin 40 hp engines. Her pointing ability upwind is about 55–60°, and her twin keels and engines make maneuvering in tight marinas easy. The shallow draft allows access to lagoons and anchorages off-limits to deeper monohulls. Strengths Excellent comfort and space for live-aboard life Bright, well-ventilated interior with panoramic views Great storage capacity and ergonomic layout Easy to handle with twin engines and wide beam Proven blue-water cruiser with strong community support Weaknesses Mediocre light-wind performance — she needs ≈15 knots of breeze to move well Some bridge-deck slamming in steep seas Older models may need refit: window sealant, through-deck fittings, sail-drive maintenance Slightly higher maintenance due to twin systems (engines, drives, rudders) Buying & Refit Notes Buyers should check for deck sealant degradation and water intrusion around fittings, evaluate sail-drive seals, and confirm engine hours. Many 2010 boats benefit from modern upgrades like lithium batteries, solar panels (800 W+ recommended), and watermakers. Owners also suggest upgrading from 30 hp to 40 hp engines for better motoring in rough conditions. Summary The Lagoon 400 Owner’s Version strikes the perfect balance between performance, comfort, and practicality. It’s ideal for couples or families seeking a reliable, spacious catamaran for extended cruising or circumnavigation. Though not the fastest cat on the water, it’s a safe, forgiving, and beautifully livable boat that has earned its reputation as one of Lagoon’s most beloved models.

In this week's episode, I finish out my sailing season with a half-day of sailing before taking the boat out of the water. It was the best weather forecast for the week, but turned out rainy, grey and stormy. At one point, I was hit on the beam by a squall and a 28 mph gust. I was flying full sails (fully canvassed) and was nearly knocked down. I quickly spun the boat around through the wind and went straight into a hove-to position on a port tack. Unfortunately, my reefing lines are all on the startboard side, so I was unable to reef the boat on a port tack. The waves and white caps built up quickly, so I took down the sails and headed back to the marina to let the storm pass. Overall, not the ending to the season I was hoping for. As Summer progresses, we are still plagued by weeds. After struggling to get out on a beautiful day on the Bay, we experienced considerable difficulties returning to our slip through the weeds. We managed to lose steerage at a critical time turning into our slip. Our problems were exacerbated by a strong breeze pushing us away from the dock. Watch to the end to see how we faired. There is no such thing as a 'last' job, because maintenance never ends on a boat, but recommissioning our diesel generator is essential if we want to be continual cruisers on the canals and waterways of England! It's been held up by a broken bolt that we need to drill out and retap, but finding someone to assist was proving difficult. Fortunately, along came Matthew of Thorne Boat Services on the Stainforth and Keadby Canal. Taking this opportunity, Jamie moved our widebeam canal boat through Thorne Lock and downstream in high winds to the workshop. But fixing the bolt is only half the problem. When we initially ran the generator, it was cutting out after just a couple of minutes, so something was clearly wrong. Jamie suspects the thermostat, so he sets out to clean the cooling system, which, it turns out, was filthy! Loneliness, isolation, great views, boating community, beach, boat hook, dill & basil, jump rope Boat life on Isabella can give us feelings of loneliness, isolation and it can also be exciting, fun and at times relaxing. Join us as we share our journey with you working on DIY projects, creating videos that sometimes get age restricted, growing herbs and playing at the beach. Karen is re-sanding the boat hook preparing it for coats of outdoor grade polyurethane. Meanwhile, Steve’s mind is racing with unknown thoughts as he watches her sanding technique. Reflecting on boat life we realize the boating community is extremely supportive and yet, sometimes there is a feeling of isolation. Welcome to Part 2 of our structural nightmare! 🚢 After days of attempts, we finally found the definitive solution for the uneven and crooked deck. In this episode, the welder and I take a deep dive into the correction, using relief cuts and an ingenious aluminum "shrinking" technique to relieve the plate's tension and force it into the correct position. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life. We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. My DIY project continues. Lots of sanding is required to prepare Celinas hull for the osmosis treatment. Luckily her hull was dry to the bone and no osmosis was detected. To keep it this way I closed all holes and cracks with thickened epoxy and applied five layers of Gel-Shield 200. Antifouling protection was applied afterwards using Hempels Silic One biocide free fouling release system. To be continued...

The crew experiences a cold front in Florida and attempts to sell their 24-volt Amper Time LiFePO4 batteries, a less common voltage. They participate in the Bootkey Harbor Cruisers Radio Net, a community broadcast for sailors. A visit to a monthly swap meet to sell their batteries proves largely unsuccessful. The video also details boat maintenance, including replacing an AC outlet. A cooking segment features a feta cheese pasta recipe. Later, the crew works on removing paint and rust from boat components using specialized products. They attend a Bahamas meeting to prepare for their trip and acquire new electrical panels and primers. Additionally, they assist a fellow sailor with mast repairs and discover a mysterious light underwater. A major focus is the significant progress on their wind generator project, where they plan to install two wind generators:)

Howdy folks — Mark here from Nomad Boatbuilding! Today I’m tackling one of the hardest jobs in wooden boatbuilding: fiberglassing a glued-lapstrake hull. Using WEST SYSTEM epoxy, fiberglass tape, and peel ply, I test a new approach to strengthen the bottom of a lapstrake boat destined for rocky beaches and mooring wear. You’ll see how I: Apply fiberglass tape plank by plank Use peel ply for a smoother, faster finish Mix, roll, and trim epoxy cleanly Learn a few lessons along the way (including a late-night mistake!) It’s all about problem-solving and experimenting to make traditional boatbuilding stronger and more efficient. ⚓ Like, Subscribe & Comment if you enjoy wooden boats and epoxy work! #Boatbuilding #Lapstrake #WoodenBoats #Epoxy #Fiberglass #NomadBoatbuilding #WestSystem #MaritimeCraftsmanship #DIYBoatbuilding

We’re in the Wrangell, Alaska shipyards with Alaskan Gypsy, our 80-foot steel motor-sailer under full restoration. The weather’s cold, the fairing compound won’t cure without heat, and my big diesel furnace rental quit—so I pulled this new Vevor portable diesel heater straight out of the box and put it to work. This isn’t a studio review; it’s a real-world torture test. I run the heater nonstop for a full week in a drafty paint tent, measure temps, fuel burn, and reliability, and share what I actually think of it after living with it. Full disclosure - Vevor sent me this heater at no charge, but I have purchased quite a variety of their products before including an earlier model portable diesel heater that I intended to install on our first steel motor-sailer. I haven't installed it yet because I started using it as portable heat on my job sites warming things like the tool shed and the sauna I was building... I didn't want to leave it on the boat it worked so good. Vevor has set up some links for the heater, and other options and a 5% off code. If you have any questions about the heater please comment below. Vevor Diesel Heater: https://s.vevor.com/QTYFE1 Other Options: https://s.vevor.com/QTYJCR (5% Code: VEVT5) In this video: • Vevor diesel heater unboxing & first impressions • Setup and initial start-up without reading the manual 😅 • Emergency use heating a full-size boat tent • Overnight fuel-use test and heat output results • 7-day nonstop performance report • Pros, cons, and whether I’d buy another one It’s cold, wet, and dirty in the shipyard—but this little heater helped keep me fairing in a T-shirt at 38 °F outside. • Intro – why we need heat in the Wrangell shipyard • Unboxing the Vevor diesel heater • Accessories, exhaust, and setup overview • The shipyard problem – big heater failed • First ignition and warm-up test • Fueling, preheat cycle, and first hot air • Full output test inside the paint tent • Overnight results – 10 hours on one tank • 38°F outside, T-shirt weather inside • Week-long continuous run results • Final thoughts – cost, noise, heat, and durability #Vevor #DieselHeater #ProductReview #AlaskanGypsy #BoatRefit #ShipyardLife #SteelBoat #DIYBoat #HeaterTest #WrangellAlaska

This week aboard Arabella in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Steve takes on a cozy mission while Robin is away: Mission: Warm Robin. With winter closing in and temperatures dropping fast, it’s the perfect time to prep both the boat and a special surprise for her birthday. First, a quick fix for the Dickinson diesel heater, sealing up a small exhaust leak that’s been marking the cabin overhead with soot. Then it’s on to something a bit more personal: crafting handmade winter gear using traditional and sustainable materials sourced in Canada: moose leather, beaver fur, coyote, and seal skin. Over the course of a few days, Steve designs and stitches a full set of cozy accessories: fur-lined slippers, beaver-and-coyote overmitts, and a coyote muff, all made by hand aboard the boat. The result? A heartfelt, one-of-a-kind gift to help Robin stay warm aboard Arabella, and out in the backcountry this winter. Join us for this heartwarming mix of DIY craftsmanship, boat maintenance, and life aboard in the North Atlantic. 🔧 In This Episode: • Fixing a small smoke leak in the diesel heater exhaust • Using high-temp silicone sealant for safe stove maintenance • Designing & sewing fur slippers and mitts by hand • Exploring traditional materials from Newfoundland’s Indigenous artisans • Gift reveal: Robin’s reaction to the handmade winter set -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. PG caught up with Andreas, Export Manager for Quick Group, to talk all things gyros, global adoption, and why more shipyards — from Europe to the U.S. — are making the switch. Standing alongside @axopar @nimbusboats @fjordboats_official and @iconyachts — Andreas shared how brands across the board are fitting Quick Gyros as standard. Even on the @maritimomotoryachts stand, two of the three vessels on display are running Quick systems — with no gyro fitted to the third. Why the shift? ✅ Smaller footprint ✅ Air-cooled (no water pumps or secondary systems) ✅ Lower maintenance ✅ Proven performance ✅ Global dealer support Less complexity. More control. That’s why @quickitaly is the fastest-growing gyro brand in the world. Need help speccing the right gyro for your vessel? Talk to the Gineico team.
