Replacing the canvas work on a sailboat can be pricey, so we decided to do it all DIY. This video doesn't aim to teach you how to sew your own canvas, we want to show you the experience of doing it yourself with no prior experience and on a budget. It's not easy, but it's so worth it in the end. On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, learn more about our work life as we take you along to see our biggest event of the year, the Crystal Ball New Year’s Eve in Minneapolis. In the midst of planning and running this HUGE event, we finalize the purchase on our new sailboat and move Whim to her new home. This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching how to learn to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas! There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. We are excited (and a little nervous!) to share this journey with you. We hope that you learn a little from our experiences and maybe inspire you to make changes to live the life you want! —————————————————— SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW https://www.sailingonawhim https://www.youtube.com/sailingonawhim https://www.facebook.com/sailingonawhim https://www.instagram.com/sailing_on_a_whim https://www.twitter.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— CONSIDERING BECOMING A PATRON https://www.patreon.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— GEAR: Cannon EOS Rebel SL2 - https://amzn.to/2y2Hty1 Cannon Powershot G7x Mark II - https://amzn.to/2S6rOVu DJI Mavic Air - https://amzn.to/2W2OYgz GoPro Hero5 - https://amzn.to/2S8FizU Fantasea Line FG7X II - https://amzn.to/2xSuY8q Rode DDG-GO Deadcat - https://amzn.to/2Y4AT4G DJI Mavic Pro Plantinum - https://amzn.to/3eU5tUT —————————————————— RECOMMENDED READING: Learn to Sail – https://sailingonawhim.com/learn-to-sail Cruising Life – https://sailingonawhim.com/cruising-life Maintenance & Repair – https://sailingonawhim.com/maintenance-%26-repair Inspiration & Adventure – https://sailingonawhim.com/inspiration-%26-adventure —————————————————— MUSIC FROM EPIDEMIC SOUND —————————————————— The Abacos area of the Bahamas was devastated by Hurricane Dorian in September 2019. All of our sailboat repair and maintenance blogs are now hosted on our dedicated maintenance channel, MOTHERSHIP MAINTENANCE Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/c/mothershipmaintenance An edited version of this video is now hosted there. We quickly discovered that USB devises on a boat are a necessity - not a luxury and our screen time actually increased when we moved aboard. The two USB plugs we had on the boat were woefully inadequate to cope with charging our phones, tablets, kindles, GoPro and other devises that accompany a modern, mobile lifestyle which would end up in a pile on the nav table. So the only solution was to install a whole lot more outlets for our USB devises. Instead of running more wires through already congested conduits, we replaced the 70's style 24v bedside lights with car 24v USB plugs and here's how we did it! Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** In Malay, orang means "person" and utan is derived from hutan, meaning "forest." So orangutan is literally translated as "person of the forest." Orangutans are the only great apes of Asia and there was no way were were going to pass up seeing them while we were sailing in Indonesia. We left Starry Horizons in Kumai on the Indonesian side of Borneo in order to take a 2 night river tour deep into the rain forest of Tanjung Puting National Park. We were there for the orangutans, but we also saw lots of other wildlife, including several other types of monkeys and a night trek where we captured the only known footage of a Flat Headed Cat kitten in the wild. So cool! Thanks for watching! (Footage from October 2018) If you're interested in learning more about Orangutans and the work Dr. Galdikas is doing to help them, please visit Orangutan Foundation International: https://orangutan.org/ Curious for more up to date info on where we are and what we're doing? The bronze floor timbers have been a lot of work but it is all paying off. We spend some time prepping everything so that we can finally get to installing these beauties in their places for good! Each faying surface will need treatment before we can place the floors and bolt them down. We also need to figure out the angle for all the through bolts in the stem and stern that are going to hold the floors in those areas. We use a couple tricks to do this and get things to fit, including the use of some fire! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.
Slowly Chipping away at our to-do list of jobs before we leave the marina and head off to explore Malta at the end of the month, then onto Italy! Had the diver come to check the bottom of the boat for any issues as well as scrape the thick layer of stuff that has been growing for the past year that it has spent sitting in the water. Just waiting on the electrician out to check the electronics/navigation as well as the mechanic to service the engines and generator and we can take this baby out for a joyride! -----Instagram----- @sailing_sunday @brittnimoffatt @ryanweepers @jacksontheshepherdx -----Website----- www.svsunday.com -----Music----- Track: Andromedik - With Me [NCS Release] Music provided by NoCopyrightSounds. An ocean crossing is never easy on a boat, and constant use means lots of wear and tear on the boat and the gear. Your sailboat thru hull fittings are super important for not sinking. So we decided to install a new bronze thru hull fitting instead of our plastic one. And by changing our ball valves from the old gate valves we gave ourselves a bit more work. Luckily the weather warms up a little for the work to carry on and we even experience one of the most impressive sunsets on Lake Erie. And we even try troubleshooting our wind instrument. Jana and Mick are not your typical semi-retired Australian offshore sailors. Surviving a head on crash in the outback at 100 km/hr at a young age, made them think differently about turning their sailing dreams into reality sooner. They worked and saved hard for the next 2 years and I catch up with them onboard their dream yacht in Florida, waiting to sail to the Bahamas. Their yacht search led to a surgeon selling his 1986 Morgan 43 for $80k. They offered $58k and it was theirs. After lots of maintenance, upgrades, groundings, engine headaches and weeks of toil they are on the eve of departure. With a plan to sail the Bahamas for a few months, then fly home to Australia to save more money for next legs to the Caribbean and onto the Pacific, its a great story of whats possible with determination. We also discuss boat systems and handling and share some handy tips.
Today we're gonna talk about some reasons we consider you would consider building a shipping container house. So is it worth to build a shipping container house? A lot of people ask us this question, so we decided to shoot an entire video about why anyone should build a shipping container house. Only the positive side of it. If you have an opinion about it please share with us on the comment section below, we would love to hear everyones opinion. But how about negative points, is there any? Of course there is, but we will dedicate another video for that discussion in the future. Hope you liked!! Here is part 2 of this grand adventure! I normally take pics of how I took it apart and put it back together, but.. I did the other side, so that made me an expert, right?!... umm.... NO.. lol I totally had to do it like a puzzle. But, it all worked out in the end. Could not believe the difference after simply cleaning and greasing it all up. Stoked that it's gonna be good for another 5 or 10 years. :D
Cleaning the EGR valve did not work so I was going to clean with carb cleaning and broke it. Here I replace the EGR valve and talk about who I sourced it from. Our boat wasn’t ready for full-time cruising when we bought her. This was perfectly fine; we’d rather add necessary items ourselves and learn them inside and out through the process, than pay for systems already in place that may not be exactly what we want, or are old and need to replacing anyway. We had completed a bunch of projects in Wisconsin before leaving on our trip down the river (like upgrading our anchoring system), but a few big projects still needed to be done before we could take off to more remote, sunnier locales. Project #1: Install an arch/bimini combo to provide shade for the cockpit, a place to mount solar panels and davits to hang our dinghy. Project #2: Our electrical system needed an upgrade. Our battery bank was old and small. We wanted to double our bank from two to four, install a battery monitor, solar charge controllers, and clean up/rewire anything already in place that might be a potential fire hazard, or was just a bit sketchy. The question was this: DIY or hire a contractor? The electrical project was a massive undertaking, something neither of us knew much about, so we’d first have to invest a lot of time hitting the books, trying to understand the basics of electrical wiring and energy storage. Time is money, and we contemplated hiring someone, as it might’ve made more sense if we spent that time working our “real” jobs to pay it off instead. In the end, we decided to DIY the electrical project, since all the skills we’d acquire would be useful for any other electrical project/troubleshooting we’d be doing in the future if WE knew our own boat’s electrical system from the ground up. As for the arch/bimini, because we wanted a custom look that required a skilled tradesman (as well as a bunch of machinery we didn’t own or have access to) we felt it made sense to hire a professional, or so we thought… Here’s how our decisions played out… Pop the corn and settle in for this 20-minuter! On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, we travel from Minnesota to Florida to buy a sailboat! We finally get to see Whim in person, meet the current owner, and have a marine survey completed. Of course, we also run into some roadblocks like RUNNING AGROUND for the first time! Well, it has been two years and we have had questions on how our plants are doing from Canterbury Farms Nursery. Yes, we love the results, but there are things we would have changed. Original video: https://youtu.be/3IBe35vDuag This is one of the first projects I outsourced in the new house, we had Canterbury Farms Nursery "http://canterburyfarmsnursery.com/" came out and give our backyard more of a tropical feel. Sailboat Haul Out Tips and Preparations (Preps) for a major refit in Richards Bay, South Africa at the Zululand Yacht Club.(1 big Boat on 1 small Travel Lift- Patrick Childress Sailing #39) Upon arrival in Richards Bay, South Africa, we prepare our blue water sailboat, SV Brick House for another boatyard haulout for boat Maintenance, sailboat upgrades, and of course new bottom paint. We will be doing lots of boat work and sailboat renovations here. Patrick Childress shows how he cleans the boat, tests the water for drinking, kills the invading ants before they infest our boat, and then gets us ready to re-fit the boat in to a travel lift that is a little too small to accommodate our rigging. We unattached the forestays to fit on the travel lift, and Patrick demonstrates the best way to do this without taking off the sails, or disassembling the entire profurl roller furling drum. Hauling a sailboat out of the water, even on a travel lift that is a bit too small doesn’t have to be chaotic or cause for concern, but there are a few things to get ready before hauling a boat out of the water for a long sailboat refit. Here is the ant poison we have carried with us around the world that has worked 99.9% of the time with ants. I recommend carrying a big supply of it because it’s sometimes hard to find! https://amzn.to/2YL0FrL ▬▬ FOLLOW ALONG! ▬▬ ✩ Instagram: http://www.Instagram.com/svBrickHouse ✩ Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/SYBrickhouse ✩ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/SVBrickhouse ✩ Our blog: :http://www.WhereIsBrickHouse.com ✩Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/PatrickChildress ✩Tshirts and other: https://www.WhereIsBrickHouse.com/store ✩Wish we were on Patreon? But there should be a checklist, what is needed, and the definition of a haul out facility near me. Whether a fiberglass boat or a wooden boat, all boats needs to be hauled out sooner or later. This doesn’t cover boat bottom painting prices, now how much does it cost to haul a boat, but it’s a good travel lift pre-haulout prepping video. How much to get a boat out of the water? The end of the current metal work which comes with fabricating the bronze floors we are installing in Arabella is finally nearing its end. These structural members tie the frames to the centerline and whether they be wood or metal, are one of the most important parts of the build. We have put a lot of time and effort into fabricating these and are really excited to get to installing them in their home. The most complicated of these floor timbers are the ones in the stern that are going to be supporting the engine beds. The engine sits level with propeller shaft and therefore needs to be supported at that height (about 2 feet/ .6 m up from the keel timber) which meant for some tall and strong floor construction there. As the engine provides propulsion for the vessel, that force needs to be transferred into the hull as opposed to moving the engine. To transfer that energy, it is crucial to make sure the engine is securely connected to multiple frames (otherwise these could crack under the force). This is why the engine sits on engine beds that are connected to the frames via the floor timbers and connects 4 frame pairs together. These were a lot of fun to figure out and make but we are very much looking forward to installing these and getting back to some woodworking. A little bit more and we'll be on to planking soon! Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com
Freebie has been at anchor for a few weeks, and in that time period we've lost a lot of sleep worrying about dragging anchor. It seems that our fears were warranted as we drug multiple times in those few weeks. Aside from getting hung up on sunken engine blocks, our 200' of chain and 35 pound mantus seemed to do nothing for us anytime it blew over 15 knots because of the poor holding. It was time get out of that anchorage before we drug to shore. We found an affordable private dock here in Marathon, FL and we're sleeping much better at night now. If you're looking for affordable dockage in the keys, I encourage you to post in local facebook groups like we did. We had multiple people reach out to us with offers to rent their dock space at a reasonable rate. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ Companies featured in our vlogs: https://www.learningthelines.com/partners ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way. By special request, we recorded the overhaul of our starboard Jib winch. Needless to say, this thing is nasty! Becky couldn't even turn the thing with both hands. The video turned out to be way too long. Yes, I learned my lesson with the last one. :p So, I decided to break it into 2 parts. Part 2 will be uploaded on Tuesday night. Be sure to check out the results of our tedious work!

Cueva de Nerja or Caves of Nerja are a series of caverns near Málaga, Spain which display and amazing array of stalactites and stalagmites - even the world's biggest stalagmite! These days the amphitheatre like chambers regularly house concerts but archeologists are uncovering cave paintings and remnants from hunter-gatherers and fishermen from more than 30,000 years ago! Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** It's time for some real talk. Sailing in Indonesia is not very fun or very easy. And here's why: There are fish attraction devices (FADs) everywhere, including in extremely deep water, they don't have lights and you can't see them on radar. And if you're not worried about hitting a random FAD, you have all the fishing boats to contend with. They are EVERYWHERE and have no regard for the "rules of the road" or proper navigational lights. If you manage to stay clear of everything, you still have the wind to contend with. Since you're close to the equator, the winds are light to begin with and then the tall volcanic islands exert their strange influence. This passage from Bali to Borneo had a bit of it all, but fortunately, even though the sailing itself isn't great, what awaits on land helps make up for it! Thanks for watching! When the motor fails on a sailboat, everyone says “just use the wind and sail” But what do you do when no wind or light wind against you? Take a look at our emergency solution that uses a 15HP Yamaha for 120nm at 3.5 kts pushing a 46ft trimaran. Simple to set up. Filmed in April 2019.
Full test in Multihulls World #166: https://www.multihulls-world.com/review/trimaran/neel-47-three-hulls-for-blue-water-family-cruising Preview of our test onboard the NEEl 47 Trimaran designed by Marc Lombard. La Rochelle-based builder Neel presented their brand-new 47 at the 2019 International Multihull Show at La Grande Motte. On board this trimaran designed by Marc Lombard, there’s the generous central space, which merges saloon and cockpit - the in-house name is the Cockloon. The main innovation: the owner's cabin is located on the same level as the rest of the platform, and offers a direct view of the route ahead or the anchorage. The floats fitted out as guest cabins allow the owner and crew to receive friends for short or medium stays or to offer some independence to the children. An intelligent and convincing layout in use. All the technical equipment is grouped in the central hull, below floor level. This means bonuses for space saving, ease of maintenance, reduced and centered weight. Navigation Station Build Out Part 6: Completion of the Nav Station Hello Friends, It felt the day would never come... On this episode I finish up (mostly) hooking up the last instruments of the new nav station. I take us through the different elements of the Aft panel and talk about the KJM antenna splitter that my Digital Yacht AIS/GPS/VHF combo antenna and splits the signal between my ICOM VHF radio, Digital Yacht iAis receiver and my new JBL stereo. here is a link to the Combo Antenna I mentioned in the video ( https://youtu.be/OXOBssKPEWg ) Once we get everything hooked up finally get to see the panels all of their glory with lights on and switches switched. A week or so after this video I got a 9' long Sea talk cable in so now everything is hooked up and working on the panels. As I mentioned in the video I will be doing a follow up video going through each piece, showing you the cost and when I purchased it. I also have a special video just about the NMEA 0183 system I will be editing and uploading sometime soon. Thanks to our patrons for your support and I hope y'all didn't get too bored with the DIY REFIT series. All of our sailboat repair and maintenance blogs are now hosted on our dedicated maintenance channel, MOTHERSHIP MAINTENANCE Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/c/mothershipmaintenance An edited version of this video is now hosted there. Our #Eumenia / #Eudora washing machine finally gave up. We tried repairing it but after 20 years it was probably long overdue for a replacement! So we ordered a mini Candy Automatic but of course, it didn't quite fit so a few modifications to the boat were needed. It wasn't all plain sailing, so see how we got on! The washing machine installed is a Candy Aquamatic Tempo 4Kg: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00EP2PQS0/?ref=idea_lv_dp_ov_d PLEASE NOTE: YouTube have disabled comments on our channel (and other family channels) due to safeguarding issues regarding minors on the YouTube platform. Bora Bora is full of stunning landscapes and jaw-dropping blue water, but we're on a mission to swim with the local Manta Rays. Check out our SWEET Site: http://bit.ly/gwtw-home ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is a yin to every yang and never have we felt that more than in boat life. The reality of this lifestyle is far more complex than these weekly postcards we send. From beautiful moments and epic encounters in the underwater world to endless repairs brought on by the salty environment we love so much. It feels like a battle of extremes some days and it can be a challenge to find the balance. Like all older boats, our Curiosity requires a lot of maintenance and a steady stream of replacement parts. Add in our inexperience and a remote location to the mix and the whole experience shifts to from physical to mental. We have to consistently fine tune our attitudes and learn to take it in stride. Some days, a good beer really helps. 😉 Too much work and not enough play or vice versa leads to an imbalance that can cause disaster. We all experience this yin and yang in life. Of all the various lifestyles we’ve had the great fortune to experience, sailing around the world has the most dramatic highs and lows. But, it’s like Brian said in the movie Vanilla Sky, ‘WITHOUT THE BITTER, BABY, THE SWEET AIN’T AS SWEET.’ While swelling batteries, rusted engine parts and broken water pumps may be bitter, nothing is sweeter than swimming with a Manta Ray the lagoons of Bora Bora!
