When everything just breaks seemingly at one time, you can lose your mind a little bit. After all the work to convert Ixion to an electric sailboat, this set back is frustrating. We are finally reaching the end of our long stretch, and getting ready to move onboard. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned when two large storms blew through, causing damage to our dodger and solar panels. To top it off, we begin to experience electrical issues that gets in the way of charging our batteries. With a broken solar charger, we can't run our electric motor. We sail in the Atlantic ocean off the coast of New Jersey. We duck into Cape May and motor through the C&D canal. Afterward, we anchor overnight. 5:00 Welcome to Annapolis We arrive in Annapolis to lots of boats and kiteboarders. We visit relatives and check out cool new catamarans and monohulls during the Annapolis Sailboat Show in October. We enjoyed the boat show, picking up some much needed (and not so needed) items at great show deal prices. We purchase a life raft, paddleboards, and some more safety gear. 6:33 Goodbye Family After the boat show, our family left with our last big possession, Curtis' car. We sold it to his parents as we wouldn't be needing it for a long time. 9:24 Haulout at Jabins We decided to make an un-planned haul out and do some boat projects at Bert Jabin Boat Yard. Initially, we wanted to do this boat work in North Carolina or Florida, before proceeding on to the Bahamas, but Jabin's is a top-notch yard with some of the best in the industry. We knew we would have access to the resources to complete the projects we wanted and they had space they could fit us into. 11:32 Boat Work We re-wire and optimize the electrical system for LifePO4 batteries, moving the battery bank to a centralized location. We do some bottom work and paint touch up. We install a line cutter on the propeller. Check the rudder quadrant, install new rudder bearings, and refurbish the autopilot. We pull the mast to install an inner forestay for a cutter rig staysail option. We also take care of many small projects like marking the anchor chain, etc. There are lots of trips to West Marine. Most notably we met some amazing people and new friends in Annapolis. We loved it there!!! Checking fuel pressure, our symptoms match what seems like a fuel issue, so we are going to show how to test fuel pressure on a Jeep Wrangler YJ. The top 3 issues that can lead to a fuel issue are the fuel pump, fuel filter, and injectors. We are testing the fuel pressure on the fuel rail that is just before the injectors, and the pressure issue could be anything before the injectors. Before doing the test we did run some Lucas fuel treatment to hopefully help, it sure won't hurt. Injector cleaners are effective at stopping blockages from forming, they are not always strong enough to remove substantial deposits. This didn't fix our issue but hurt nothing to try. The fuel regulator can cause low fuel pressure on acceleration or high fuel pressure at idle. Exhaust burns your eyes Backfires on deceleration Black smoke from the tailpipe, not blue that is oil Engine not running smooth or stalling on acceleration Raw fuel is dripping out the tailpipe Low Fuel pressure on fuel-injected cars can have similar symptoms to a Regulator failure that is not raising pressure with demand. We did not think we had a low-pressure issue because of the burning eyes and backfire on deceleration and thought we had too much fuel. All of our sailboat repair and maintenance blogs are now hosted on our dedicated maintenance channel, MOTHERSHIP MAINTENANCE Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/c/mothershipmaintenance In this maintenance blog, I engage the help of a professional mechanic to replace a crankshaft seal and the Vetus coupling bushings. For the last few years we've had a slow but persistent leak from the flywheel housing which had been diagnosed as a worn crankshaft oil seal. However to get to THIS piece involved removing the prop shaft generator, gearbox, starter motor and flywheel and to get to THOSE, we had to disengage the vetus coupling and prop shaft, dissemble the engine cradle and move the entire engine back on its mounts. Along the way we replaced the the vetus coupling bushings and also discovered a very corroded gear box oil cooler which needed a clean up and new cover plate. You can see why I called in a professional on this particular job! On the recommendation of fellow Amel owners we dropped in to Yacht Concept in Porto Christo, Mallorca owned by Peter Kukloc and for a few days his mechanic, Torsten came onboard and kindly let me film him work and bombard him with lots of questions. He was very patient! The marinas in the Balearics are extremely expensive so we wanted to spend as little time as possible on dock. However, we had to wait for parts and the job eventually ran over the weekend so we were there for 5 nights in total. Even though Porto Christo is one of the cheaper marinas (basically a municipality owned town quay) it added a further €355 to the cost of €2230 for the entire job. Thanks to one of our patrons who helped towards the cost of this by the way. Incidentally we also had the belts, pulleys freshwater pump replaced at the same time but as there's so much to see in this video, I've put it in a separate maintenance blog! Tip - source your own spares BEFORE the work starts and begin the job early in the week to prevent the repairs running over the weekend and incurring extra marina costs. The time has come! We've all been waiting for the moment that big beautiful blue Nanni Diesel engine gets dropped into Arabella. She's been sitting patiently on the sidelines for a while now but the moment to see how she fits is upon us. The Oyster service team in Las Palmas had suggested engine service tasks, but there wasn’t time to do them, so I arranged for the necessary parts to be ordered through the Yanmar service center at Rodney Bay (Island Water World is distributer for Yanmar there). Once we arrived I scheduled the work, and then got busy on cleaning the anchor locker, replacing our davit cables with Dynema, and having machine shop work done on our mast furling assembly. New Years Eve came and we celebrated with Thai food and watched the fireworks. When all that was complete, we decided to sail down to Marigot Bay, a hurricane hole located about ten miles south that we heard had a nice resort (which it did). Installing a Serpentine belt on a Balmar-6 series 100 Amp alternator and a Dinghy Repair for good measure! After our brief stay in the marina we noticed we were pretty deficient in quality docking lines so we decided it was high time to upgrade our ragged old ones for some shiny new line. Khiara made the solo journey to Island Water World in St Georges harbor from one of our favorite hiding places Grand Mal anchorage just to the north. the journey began like many times before only this time at possibly the least convenient place the Outboard engine failed. With broken oar locks, no anchor and no radio, poor Khiara was able to get the motor working just in time to avoid being washed out to sea or onto the rocks between the bays and make it back to the boat. Adam set about repairing the outboard engine the following morning. The day after that the boat maintenance kick continued when Adam and Khiara installed a Serpentine belt kit on their Balmar-6 series 100 Amp alternator. The reason for this was to correct once and for all the overabundance of belt dust that had been accumulating for the past few years and had resulted in many shredded belts and many unnecessary alternator servicing's. This video is a compilation taken from probably the best parts of 2019, it covers our journey from Northern Italy where we wintered to Meganisi in Greece where we finished our summer season. It also has footage of the sailing scenes from the new James Bond movie No Time to Die (or Bond 25 as we knew it), we are the crew that sailed the boat a spirit 46 called Happenstance with Daniel Craig and "taught him the lines" so to speak. We also sailed the Spirit 46 Happenstance 850 from Jamaica back to Fort Lauderdale (via the Bahamas) to return her to her owner after the movie shoot in Jamaica was finished.
