I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

This Lagoon 47 Catamaran is a prototype diesel-electric hybrid built in 1996. It's pretty cool to see that Lagoon was experimenting with electric propulsion over twenty years ago. It's also neat to see the system is still functioning today and is sailed on a regular basis. We got the boat painted, MayBe. We used Rustoleum paint to and we tell you what we think once done. The floor is the boat looks 100% better than it did with the raw wood look. This has been a long time coming for my wife, Danielle. The RustOleum paint applied quick and easy and dried to the touch pretty fast. If you are looking for a color match, RustOleum paint is awesome. In the last two coats of paint, we added anti-slip because it is a boat floor that we plan to walk on. Now we did repaint the floor in the next video, and we go over what we didn't like about this paint. This boat is truly your affordable "cabin on the lake". This 32' Prowler, made by Cooper Yachts in Vancouver, BC, is a perfect boat for spending your weeks off out on the lake exploring the waters of the Shuswap. There are 2 completely separate sleeping quarters with doors for privacy. There is a large galley, with a propane stove and oven. The head has been recently updated to an electric flush unit and the holding tank was replaced last year. The dinette also converts into a sleeping area for those "boys weekend" fishing trips. The cockpit layout is great for entertaining, and is currently a blank canvas in the rear section: one could add more bench seating, or leave it open for a fishing platform. Mechanically she is in good shape, with over 1000 hours on both motors. The engines are running fine at the moment, although what this boat needs most is an owner who will actually USE it! There has been less than 30 hours put on this boat in the last 10 years, aside from our winterizing and summerizing time! If you're looking for something affordable, turn key usable with a tonne of potential for DIY upgrades like flooring and upholstery then this is the unit for you! Currently located on Shuswap Lake, with provisions available for year round moorage and storage.

I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific. I am sailing Tarka around the world in part to raise money and awareness for coral conservation by supporting the Coral Reef Alliance. It is time to start planking Arabella! This moment has been a long time coming and we are thrilled to be able to finally start this process. It does mean a bit of a learning curve though, so we had our friend Thad Danielson come back to the boat yard and help us through the process of marking out the starboard side garboard plank. The garboard plank is maybe the most important plank on the boat as it ties the frames down to the centerline. This is the place in the boat that is under some of the most strain. As the hull is buoyed up, the ballast and center line are trying to sink to the bottom of the ocean. Due to these two strains working against each other, many boats start to split right in this area and spring leaks. Therefore it is best to try to fit the largest and strongest garboard plank possible. We work with Thad to get this plank marked out by using a spiling batten and learn a new skill that we will be able to put to good use throughout the rest of the planking process. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** After 100 days in Indonesia, it was time to finally leave the country. But in order to do that, we had to cross one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world... the Singapore Straits! We'd spent days watching a constant stream of ships and knew a good plan was going to be vital for a smooth (and incident free!) crossing. Our plan was a good one, but when we made the turn and I saw those big ships bearing down on us, I'll admit to still being a bit nervous! Thanks for watching! The Formosa 68' (70' LOA) sure is an interesting design and a HUGE boat. This particular boat was purchased and worked on Pre-Hurricane Irma, but when the hurricane hit the boat sustained a little damage to the genoa furler. It's been sitting in it's slip since. She needs deck work, rigging work, and a lot of interior work as well. Because of how big she is, she is a massive project, and will require massive amounts of time and money to restore her back to her 80's beauty. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Make sure you make an informed decision on your next boat with this tool: http://sailingsoulianis.com/shop/ltl-boat-buying-dashboard/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you'd like more information on this yacht, Paul's contact info is listed below. 562-714-1500 Key Lime Sailing Club https://www.keylimesailingclub.com/ keylargocottages@keylimesailingclub.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthel... While waiting for a weather window to cross from the Balearics to Sardinia, we sail to Isla De Cabrera ( Goat Island) and apply for a permit to stay the night. That evening, we have a drink or an expensive nightmare as described by Woody and the next morning, we head off to trek to the castle on one side of the Island to the lighthouse on the other. We learn a lot about how conservation is protecting the flora and fauna on this Island. We are a family with 3 children and make our own electricity and water, homeschool the kids and do our own boat maintenance. Our dream of cruising and exploring the world's oceans is matched with a desire to live a more off-grid and sustainable lifestyle. A background as RYA instructors, flotilla skippers and RNLI crew only partly prepared us for the challenges of this live-aboard lifestyle! We built the latch system for our ski lover on this old Bayliner Bowrider 175. This had to be one of the easiest things we have done in this project. Now we are on to painting the floor cause it is still so ugly. Want a pretty floor that hides all the labor it took to fix this rotted mess so now it's paint time. Thought we would want a hinge on the one side of the ski locker, this would have been more complex and more likely to break. So we keep it simple since gravity was on our side why not just build a lip to keep it down and a latch on the other side. We did this and loved it, the ski locker was strong, very easy to build, and it just worked. This week we're touring another sailboat that's on the opposite end of the spectrum of what we normally look at, but in a different way this time. This is an Outremer 45, which is the same boat model as the famous La Vagabonde. We're not touring it simply because it's famous, but because recently we've become very interested in performance cruising catamarans. The reason for this is because they just work better as platforms for electric boats. They have a lot to offer including but not limited to better sailing performance, lighter displacements (but still just as strong), more efficent hulls, more living space, and more room for equipment related to cruising. Buying a complete performance cruising is a long way from possible for us in the near future, but we've pretty much decided we're going to DIY our own performance cruising catamaran from scratch, starting a year or two from now. Yes it will be expensive. Yes it will take a long time. Yes, we will film it ALL. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Make sure you make an informed decision on your next boat with this tool: http://sailingsoulianis.com/shop/ltl-boat-buying-dashboard/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more information on Outremer Yachts feel free to reach out to Terry Grimbeek with Just Catamarans. terry@justcatamarans.net https://justcatamarans.net/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. Once she is sailing, we are planning on taking Arabella all around the world on adventures and in all kinds of conditions. A bluewater sailboat like her needs to be tough and be able to stand up to all kinds of conditions. Atkin designed her with these considerations in mind, but there is one more element to wooden sailboats that we feel is important. This element is something that has been used a lot in the past but was also often omitted, despite evidence of its usefulness in tough conditions. This element is diagonal bronze strapping on the hull. Sailboats are very structurally stable bow to stern and starboard to port but they are not particularly stable when torsionally strained. The bronze strapping ties the frames all together along with the planking to add extra strength in this dimension. In addition, they can also act as a slight protection to the frames if a boat is ever washed up rocks. With this part of the build installed, we also move on to scarfing up our full length planks to get ready to hang Arabella's first planks!

Sailing GREAT Barrier Island, New Zealand GREAT Barrier Island & Hauling Out our Catamaran! Barrier Gold, Boat Jobs and Hauling Out In this episode spend a busy couple of weeks at Great Barrier Island. We anchor at Smokehouse Bay and enjoy some stunning walks around the island. We meet Sven a great local character who runs a company called 'Barrier gold' which distils Manuka and Kanuka oil using the bushes growing on his land. He shows us around his workshop and explains how he uses old machine oil to run his furnace. Our haulout is pending so we try and focus on a couple of boat jobs in an attempt to get ahead of the curve. Unfortunately we only succeed in adding more items to the list! We sail back across to the mainland and successfully haul out at Norsand boat yard, ready for our planned month of maintenance. We are Jo and Rob and we are here to share our sailing adventures with you. In 2016, inspired by the likes of ‘Delos’, ‘Sailing La Vagabonde’ and ‘Gone with The Wynns’, we sold up everything we owned and bought our 40ft, Fountaine Pajot ‘Lipari 41 Evo’ sailing catamaran ‘Double Trouble’. We had no sailing experience whatsoever, so the past few years have been a huge learning curve. We thought it might be fun to document our travels for anyone thinking of following a similar lifestyle. So far we have visited 7 different countries and sailed over 13,000 nautical miles. We have had many unique experiences that would not have been possible in our prior life and we don’t regret a second. We're both super keen on protecting our precious environment, so amongst other things, we both follow a plant based diet. You wont find any fishing footage on this channel! In this episode; It's our first day in the Guatemalan river side town of Fronteras, a place where many Western Caribbean cruisers spend their Hurricane season. It's 25 miles up the Rio and safe from any chance of a Hurricane. It's also a place many boaters choose to do repairs and upgrades to their boats. Labor is very reasonable and skilled or unskilled workers are ready and waiting to work for you. We actually ended up doing more work than we had originally planned, but that comes out in our next episode. For now enjoy the show! You too can spend an all inclusive week with us aboard our Catamaran Saltair3. This coming Fall 2019 we will be cruising back down the Rio Dulce and back to Belize. This has to be one of our favorite everything dips, love it on meat or veggies and only takes minutes to make. You can start dipping once made, or let it sit in the fridge as the yumminess marinates, but once you start dipping, you can't stop. See recipe here: https://www.chrisdoeswhat.com/creamy-dijon-sauce-for-everything/ Creamy Dijon Sauce or Dip For Everything! Put this Delicious Sauce on Sausage, Beef, Chicken, Potatoes, Vegetables and so much more! Our Creamy Dijon Sauce is one of those Dips that you can put on Everything! Our Delicious Sour Cream Garlic Sauces is what inspired this Sauce with some Major changes in core ingredients! We have been experimenting with this Sauce for about 6 months and we really loved the Yogurt in this Sauce instead of Sour Cream. It has a slight tartness with a Delicious Dijon/Horseradish Mustard that makes this our Everything Sauce! On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, we start living aboard our new sailboat only to find an invader! Watch us battle our uninvited guest as we learn about some of the challenges of living on a sailboat. This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching how to learn to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas! There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. We are excited (and a little nervous!) to share this journey with you. We hope that you learn a little from our experiences and maybe inspire you to make changes to live the life you want! —————————————————— SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW https://www.sailingonawhim https://www.youtube.com/sailingonawhim https://www.facebook.com/sailingonawhim https://www.instagram.com/sailing_on_a_whim https://www.twitter.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— CONSIDERING BECOMING A PATRON https://www.patreon.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— GEAR: Cannon EOS Rebel SL2 - https://amzn.to/2y2Hty1 Cannon Powershot G7x Mark II - https://amzn.to/2S6rOVu DJI Mavic Air - https://amzn.to/2W2OYgz GoPro Hero5 - https://amzn.to/2S8FizU Fantasea Line FG7X II - https://amzn.to/2xSuY8q Rode DDG-GO Deadcat - https://amzn.to/2Y4AT4G DJI Mavic Pro Plantinum - https://amzn.to/3eU5tUT —————————————————— RECOMMENDED READING: Learn to Sail – https://sailingonawhim.com/learn-to-sail Cruising Life – https://sailingonawhim.com/cruising-life Maintenance & Repair – https://sailingonawhim.com/maintenance-%26-repair Inspiration & Adventure – https://sailingonawhim.com/inspiration-%26-adventure —————————————————— MUSIC FROM EPIDEMIC SOUND —————————————————— The Abacos area of the Bahamas was devastated by Hurricane Dorian in September 2019. Deciding where to mount our Viking 8-man liferaft, was relatively easy. HOW to instal it was the difficult part. We just got all the fiberglass done for the ski locker hatch. Now we have to figure out how we are going to complete the ski locker hardware to lock it to the floor. The ski locker turned out very well and was so strong even though we used two boards. This ski locker hatch has a total of 10 layers of fiberglass and you can't see the seam where the two boards come together. Follow along as we breathe new life into this 2004 Bayliner Bowrider. UPDATE: I say at the end of the video that there will be ad update in EP4, well we hadn't done enough testing to do it there, but there are regular references to it in later episodes. Here is a written summary: ALTERNATOR UPDATE: For those of you who have watched the 'Uprate your alternator' video I did promise an update on how it performed in this episode. We didn't actually do enough motoring to properly test it however so apologies for not having that in this film. We will give a video update in a future episode, but in the meantime I do have some stats from using the alternator a bit now so will write out what I've found here: Firstly on advice from experienced marine engineers that you get much more longevity by running the alternator at below full capacity I set the 'belt manager' to 3 on the regulator. This means you will not get full capacity out of the alternator but it will be less stressed and last longer. having the belt manager on 3 is supposed to drop the output by 21% and it seems I get about 95 Amps at cruising revs when the batteries are able to accept full charge so that seems about right. There are also some comments on the alternator film that people have experienced Balmar failures due to excessive fan belt dust. I would always do everything possible to avoid creating fan belt dust, that's why lining up pulleys and tensioning the belts properly is important. You need a tensioner on a twin belt system, levering the alternator over and tightening it up won't cut it! In real life use, after a night at anchor I'm typically at 60-70% state of charge on the house bank (580AH AGM) So running the engine to leave the anchorage and raise the sails, usually about 1 hour, gets my state of charge up around 15% so 75-85% This is about right as the internal resistance of the battery goes up to a level where bulk charging is slowed to such an extent that solar is a much better option anyway. A no wind passage where you're motoring for a period of time will easily bring the batteries back to full charge which is good for the batteries. We get enough days like that in the Med. to give the batteries an occasional full charge so we don't have to rely on shore power to do that. Basically then I think the alternator is doing the job it needs to do & I'm happy. I'm still a bit shy of total power for long term voyaging without resorting to the Generator. We only used the Genny once in the last 4 months. But the power I'm short of is more the lower amperage long term charge which for me will probably be more solar. We could go to wind, but I'm very reluctant because of the noise, even the best modern designs are intrusive to some degree. Hydro is also an option, but difficult to fit on a canoe stern. Also reducing power draw is always something to look at. I've done everything possible for the moment I think, but there is one big saving we could make which is to fit wind vain steering at not use the autohelm. This is an attractive option for all the other benefits it brings, but it has the same problems of fitting to a canoe stern and is expensive. If you're interested in the technical aspects of sailing, i've uploaded some maintenance videos of the boat lift to the 'Tech Corner' page of our website... http://www.sailingfairisle.com/tech-c... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Uprating your alternator is high on the list of things to do for a cruising boat. This technical corner is all about choosing, wiring and fitting a larger alternator and external regulator. There's more to consider than you might think. Uprating to a serpentine or double V belt, changing and aligning the pullys. Lots of wiring, alternators work MUCH better with external regulators and you need to be able to program the regulator, standard regulators are shocking when it comes to charging house banks. This video walks you through the whole process. If you like this tech video there are many more in the tech series and we also have lots of tech tips and tricks in the regular episodes so don't miss them.

Update video - How to patch a yard with St. Augustine Sod without hurting the good sod you have. The area we re-sod is looking really good! We have been hand watering almost every day minus when it rains, and have not mowed it yet. We got this sod from The Sod Farm Video of sod install - https://youtu.be/Smo6weJP3W4 We are also using TruGreen service, new sod was not treated during the making of this video. We also tried other products from Scotts that did not seem to help much. There are many steps in the boat building process that some people may not know of or think about when picturing the work being done. Most see the centerline timbers going up. Then the frames, the planks, deck, spars, etc. And Boom you have a boat! However, there are so many more intricate parts that go into the process. One of those that many may not think of in wooden boats is something called stop waters. In this installment we fair up the rabbet to its final shape to accept the garboard plank, instal one more floor up in the bow and drill some holes in our timbers to instal the stop waters. Thank you for watching! And if you like what you are watching, maybe learned something new and want to keep these videos coming, please consider supporting the project on Patreon. https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts.

Proceeds from this video will go to the Coral Reef Alliance, but you can also support us directly (and specifically the production of these videos) by becoming a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/theadventuresoftarka Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. You can learn more here: http://www.theadventuresoftarka.com/fundraiser or visit their website directly: http://www.coral.org If you make a donation to their website directly in Tarka's honor, please send me an e-mail copy of your receipt so I can keep track of Tarka's fundraising. You can forward to: theadventuresoftarka@gmail.com Additional support for Tarka’s sail for CORAL (The Coral Reef Alliance) comes from contributions by: Soylent - Healthy provisioning for the long offshore passages Sta Lok - Swage-less terminals for portions of Tarka’s rigging, making it an easy DIY job and allowing for easy inspection Victron Energy - Providing monitoring solutions for Tarka's batteries, to ensure we always have enough juice to do what we need to. === Music credits: Plastic or Paper - Wes Hutchinson Beth - VYEN Virtues Inherited, Vices Passed On - Chris Zabriskie Alive - Ikson: https://soundcloud.com/ikson Dance With Me – Ehrling: https://soundcloud.com/ehrling
