In this video I get Shroudinger's engine up and running after having the fresh water pump fixed. I also installed a muffler box and anti-siphon to ensure i dont flood the engine. In November 2018 we sold our house and belongings to begin our journey of of becoming work travelers by sea one day. Sailing Shroudinger is our Youtube sailing vlog, inspired by many other great channels, where we documents our sailing adventure sailing adventures with our dog Khan(and possible crew members) as we restore a Lavranot L36 to navigate the globe. We'll cover a lot of DIY boat projects and share the ups and downs of eventually living aboard and traveling foreign seas!. When you buy a boat that has been siting on the hard for over 20 years the first step isn't a refit. In order to be able to start a refit the first step is to dig deep inside all the cabinets, lookers and any hole you find. That's how we got to know our boat even better and got to know all the goodies she had saved for us!! After that the next step was to give her a good internal clean up, and that what this week's episode is all about. The catamaran vs monohull debate is mostly hype and we've done our best to stay away from adding to the noise. When we heard our friends from Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose are thinking of selling their monohull to purchase a catamaran, we invited them to come crew with us...and that led to talks of cruising life in a mono vs a cat. We were talking about it anyway so why not film and share? In this video we're discussing price and performance. We hope you find this conversation based on our collective experiences helpful. If you're in the market to purchase a sailboat remember the Mantra: Spend Smart and Stress Less. Monohull or multihull...in the end the best boat is the one you can afford to purchase now. ⭐ After you hit that play button we'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below: What's you're preferred style of sailboat? Are you in the Monohull or Catamaran camp...or maybe you'd prefer to sail a mono but cruise in a cat? What's your favorite brand? It's always fascinating to read what draws each person to one type/brand/style of sailboat. On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, we say goodbye to our friends and family in Minnesota and drive all the way to Florida and move aboard our new sailboat. All the planning and hard work is starting to pay off and we cannot believe we are now living on a boat! This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching how to learn to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas! There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. We are excited (and a little nervous!) to share this journey with you. So we have to fill holes and put some fiberglass down to prepare the wood boat floor surface for paint. Glad to see this floor is coming together, working with fiberglass, expanding foam, and wood has been fun, but we are glad to be done. In a future boat, we get we know that this is one thing we will look at to make sure we don't have to do it again. For this video, we sand the boat floor to knock down any bumps that won't feel good on the feet. Then we make up a thickened resin to fill any holes, like where we drilled the floor to add expanding foam. After the resin is dry we hit it again with the sander and minus the ski locker, we are ready for paint. Blog For This Project: https://www.chrisdoeswhat.com/category/diy/boat-restoration/ Get your TotalBoat resin here: https://amzn.to/2LvZDwC In the next video, we will finish the ski locker and then on to painting to make this boat look great. The planking process can be something of a mystery. Unlike houses that are square and easily divided up to figure out siding, boats require a little bit more thought and layout for them to look right. In this video we go over a little bit of the lining off process. Lining off is the process of determining what each plank of the boat is going to look like so that the hull looks evenly planked. We have a lot of planking coming up soon so this was an opportune time to have our friend Thad Danielson come and explain a bit of this process to lay the groundwork for the job to come. One of the teachers at the WoodenBoat school, Thad has been a great resource for us as we figure things out throughout the build. Finally, we haven't forgotten about our stuffed Macaw poll. Tennis ball treatment or no? We'll let you know at the end of the video. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. We are getting back to work, have to get this boat on the water. We all know that at times life gets in the way, and we hope that you continue to watch this series. So what is left on this Bayliner boat project, well a lot! Most of the floor is done, have a few things left on the engine, and some fun wiring issues to fix. We really want to get all this done so we can do some lake testing with our boat before winter. Follow along as we breath new life into this 2004 Bayliner Bowrider. Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** Sailing across the equator is special moment. It's even more special when you cross with friends who have never done it before, aka Pollywogs! We had become Shellbacks (sailors who've crossed the equator) on our way to the Galapagos way back in 2016. So it was our honor and duty to properly escort our friends Carlos and Linda into the northern hemisphere. There were bribes involved, offerings to Neptune and a ceremony performed to determine their worthiness. A great time was had by all and the Shellback Fraternity welcomed two new members! Tenders (RIBs, Dinghies) are vital to the life of live-boards (as we discovered last year when we didn't have one anymore!) So we were thrilled to finally afford a good quality (Hypalon), hard bottom (aluminium) RIB that can take the entire family. Thanks to a quick payout form our insurance company, a great deal from Yacht Centre Palma and some domestic budget cuts, we bought a new AB Lammina 9.5AL hypalon dinghy.. which replaces our (destroyed) Caribe from last season :/ So this is just a short unboxing and test drive video to show you some of it's features and what we think of it. Launching into planking is going to be a big and satisfying part of the project. We have been working towards this moment for a very long time. In order to make sure everything goes smoothly and is enjoyable, we need to make sure that we set ourselves up well before hand. In this episode, we do just that. We built a planking bench for us to work on as we are going to be scarfing up full length planks. We modified a power planer to get ready for backing out planks. And, we faired out the rabbet to its final shape, making sure that the back rabbet was a fair transition to the frames and that the bottom edge was a 90 angle to the back rabbet. All these things together will go a long way towards making sure that we have minimal snags or hiccups down the line when planking, which is coming up soon!! And speaking of planking... This is our the last week to buy the limited edition planking t-shirts via the Bonfire link below. The proceeds from this campaign will go towards purchasing Arabella's diesel engine. This week we're touring a sailboat that's on the complete opposite end of the spectrum of what we normally look at. This is truly a luxurious catamaran, and you'll pay for it! At an asking price of $1,095,000, this million dollar yacht has all of the comforts of a land-based life on a large floating home that can sail the world. I hope you have as much fun watching this boat tour as we did getting to see it. It's not every day you get to set foot on a million dollar catamaran. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Make sure you make an informed decision on your next boat with this tool: http://sailingsoulianis.com/shop/ltl-boat-buying-dashboard/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more information on the yacht and if you're interested in potentially purchasing Andante, a 2016 Privilege Series 5, contact Larry Shaffer with Just Catamarans: larry@justcatamarans.net https://justcatamarans.net/catamaran-listing/andante-privilege-catamaran/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way. Please leave a like and comment if you've enjoyed the video, and subscribe if you haven't already.

Delicious, Simple Pasta Salad and Vegetables Sweetly marinated with Balsamic and Garlic! Perfect for a Barbecue or Party, this pasta will not spoil if left out too long! Recipe Link: https://www.chrisdoeswhat.com/balsamic-pasta-salad-with-peppers-and-garlic Pasta salad is always a great side to serve, especially for cookouts and Family Gatherings! The longer this Pasta Salad marinates, the more flavor! We wanted to make this Salad as easy as possible but with better ingredients and more flavor! We chose to use Bell Peppers and Onions because they hold up after marinating and still have that fresh vegetable crunch! Check out Part 1 of the water maker series - How to make water on a sailboat? https://youtu.be/tETjcFKccjM ***Update 2021/11/16*** It's been over two and a half years since we installed our watermaker. It has been performing flawlessly ever since and has afforded us some well-needed and appreciated self-sufficiency throughout the Mediterannean (where marinas are super expensive), through ocean crossings (yeay for showers) and through covid lockdowns (where we had zero possibility to get water otherwise). We added a control panel in our galley which has been incredibly practical and have upgraded the membrane to the latest SeaWater Pro one. We've been buying filters and parts in hardware stores all over the World (way easier than having to order proprietary parts) and we produce 19-20 gallons (70-75 liters) of fresh water per hour. Two and a half years later, we also received an affiliate link to SeaWater Pro watermakers, which allows us to receive a small commission on purchases made through it, at no extra cost to you! So if you are in the process of acquiring your own, it would mean a lot to us if you considered using it :) Check out SeaWater Pro watermakers: https://seawaterpro.com?sca_ref=1318773.3ThbpgMEbt Our kit: https://seawaterpro.com/products/110-220-volt-1-membrane-water-maker-system?sca_ref=1318773.3ThbpgMEbt ***** April 2019: It took us a while to produce this video about how to install a DIY watermaker, as we wanted to really test out our installation and put it to the test. We are absolutely delighted with our watermaker and the water production that we get out of it, especially at the price that we payed for it compared to of-the-shelf branded watermaker such as Ecotech, Spectra, rainman or aquabase watermakers. In this video, Ryan explains how to install a DIY watermaker, that is a watermaker that you build from scratch with parts that you source yourself. We go through what to think about before buying parts, how to power your watermaker, where to install it, how to buy all the parts for your watermaker, the tools that you will need to install your units and what to expect when you assemble all your parts. Finally, we give you a tour of our own watermaker installation and analyze the results we get from it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ** JOIN THE CREW! ** Join our virtual crew of Patrons at: https://www.patreon.com/ryanandsophiesailing ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ** GEAR ** ⛵️Our boat: Polar Seal, 2007 Beneteau Oceanis 40, owners version (2 cabins layout). I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

After a long winter, we drop our lines and head East. We have to deal with a ripped main sail, an over heating engine and kids that get more lively as the days go by. Night watches seem to be the best time for peace and quiet but the amazing wildlife we see keeps us all going. It takes a while for the children to get their sea legs so they feel sea sick but Mum and Dad are too tired to do much as they keep the watches going and repair the breakages. We are still at sea after 3 days and 3 nights..trying to get to the Balearics...! PLEASE NOTE: YouTube have disabled comments on family channels because they sometimes feature kids. As YouTube is no longer a family friendly platform please visit our Facebook or Patreon page to join conversations and leave messages. We are a family with 3 children and make our own electricity and water, homeschool the kids and do our own boat maintenance. Our dream of cruising and exploring the world's oceans is matched with a desire to live a more off-grid and sustainable lifestyle. A background as RYA instructors, flotilla skippers and RNLI crew only partly prepared us for the challenges of this live-aboard lifestyle! Our latitude is getting closer and closer to zero as we approach the equator for the second time on our circumnavigation! Of course, to get there, we had to work for it. The winds close to the equator are incredibly light, but somehow I managed to actually come up with an incredible passage plan and Starry Horizons showed us what she's truly capable of. This passage took us to an island just south of the equator where we stopped in order to properly plan the actual crossing. After all, we were responsible for escorting our friends from 22 South across the equator for the first time! And it must be done right! (Ep.83) We got our toilet connected and finally working.. that pressure button was a no go for us so we decided to make it all electrical. We also started on putting our non slip (texture coat) onto the decks by first adding one coat of polyurethane two part paint, throwing on our fine silica sand, waiting for it to dry & then brushing or in our case blowing off the excess sand & then adding your other coats of paint. Once that was complete we got started on doing our lifelines using GP12 or else known as dyneema. Thanks to Luke from Kraken Structures for bringing us all these goodies to help us do it! Thanks for watching, don't forget to subscribe below if you haven't already & give us a big thumbs up as well as share this with all your friends & family! We find a serious Keel Problem + we need to Repair this sailboat: Something is actually missing from our keel! Fiberglass keel repairs are underway! Error: Foam in a can is NOT open cell foam as stated in the video. Polyester resin will eat up Polystyrene foam. Patrick Childress, after 12 years on his second circumnavigation explains what does when he finds out we are missing the proper amount of structural foam in our keel... When sitting on the hard, this problem can cause a sailboat keel to oil can, or even crack, when its blocked in the unsound section of the keel. Patrick then shows the process for the keel repair. Sailboat Keel repair can be done diy, it just takes some sailboat diy knowledge, time and effort and the right tools. We have been sailing around the world for 12 years on our sailboat Brick House, a Valiant 40. We are hauled out of the water , and it’s time to fix and upgrade a few things on this 41 year old boat! We received a lot of valuable technical support from AMT Composites, and will be using a number of products they recommended, imported from all over the world, namely Gurit Fiberglass Resin which is very comparable to West Systems. They seem to have all the supplies we need for this fiberglass keel repair, as well as for our blister repair, epoxy barrier coat, and right down to the paintbrushes! They supply the materials for many of the major boatbuilders in South Africa, and are highly respected among the professionals here. https://www.amtcomposites.co.za ▬▬ FOLLOW ALONG! ▬▬ ✩Instagram: http://www.Instagram.com/svBrickHouse ✩ Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/SYBrickhouse ✩ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/SVBrickhouse ✩Our blog: :http://www.WhereIsBrickHouse.com ✩Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/PatrickChildress ✩Tshirts and other: https://www.WhereIsBrickHouse.com/store Wish we were on Patreon?
