In this special Wave Rover video I discuss the important lessons I have learned over the last 25 years of solo ocean sailing. I have put an index of the video with time stamps below to help you find or return to sections that are of more interest to you. Stories are told and books have been written to WARN of the danger boats face while clawing their way East along the North Coast of the Dominican Republic, on route to Puerto Rico. And then, the final test is the Mona, *shudder.* The dreaded Mona Passage is a turbulent and confused DEEP ocean trench that eats little sailboats for breakfast! Actually... it's not that bad if you're patient and wait for great weather. https://www.passageweather.com/ ____________________________________ Join our Crew for MORE! ↯ [https://www.patreon.com/bumsonaboat?fan_landing=true] ♡ Show Us Some Love ♡ – Don't Skip Ads 🙃 -- it's free & really helps out – Link to Gear -- Learn about tried & tested products we use & love, as Associates, we earn from qualifying clicks. – Shop our Merch 👕 -- Get cool adventure gear! https://bumsonaboat.com/shop/ – Grant a Wish -- https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/MZ41FZV5C7JT?ref_=wl_share – Buy us a Beer 🍻 -- https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=2MJFJKLMLMDCL ________________ ** FILM GEAR ** Main Cam | https://amzn.to/2D1G61F Dead Cat Mic | https://amzn.to/2qyTwQ1 GoPro | https://amzn.to/339J2Ug GoPro Wind Reducer | https://amzn.to/35n8N5e Polarized Filter | https://amzn.to/37lPOKd - SOFTWARE - Adobe Premiere Pro - MUSIC - Epidemic Sound - PHILOSOPHY - Tell the truth + Be positive ________________ ** BOOKSHELF ** - Sailing the Farm | https://amzn.to/2QFfRpH - Complete Illustrated Sailboat Maintenance Manual | https://amzn.to/2KIg3Rj - Boatowner’s Mechanical and Electrical Manual (Joel's fav) | https://amzn.to/2riGKVD - The Voyagers Handbook (Michal's fav) | https://amzn.to/2XCpxCE ________________ - ABOUT - https://bumsonaboat.com/about-us/ - CONNECT - Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BumsOnABoat/ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/bumsonaboat - WORK WITH US - Business inquiries only: sailingsustainably@gmail.com

We are on the last steps of putting together the sill for the house top and the blocking for the mizzen mast. Alix needs to cut the half laps in the corners of the sill to get them to fit just right. Once that is done, we can paint them and screw them in place. Steve on the other hand, is installing some of the last deck framing as well as making the blocking for the mizzen mast. With these last things in place, we can then move on to doing a mock up of the house top and the cockpit. This will be really exciting as it will really show the space we have to work with inside of Arabella. Thank you for watching and supporting the channel. We hope you enjoy this video and see you next week! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interesting in supporting/helping here are a few ways: Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg Recurring support via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Original Soundtrack available at benfundis.bandcamp.com FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

This is our biggest lobster catch ever. The last day of the spiny lobster fishing season in the Bahamas was excellent. Plus now we had some provisions of seafood to go to Georgetown further South in the Exumas. It was our first time back in a town since this whole pandemic thing started. But our mission was to replenish our food stores, water and gas so along with @sailingvinyasa we put on our masks. Filmed end of March early April 2020. If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up! #sailing #spinylobstersbahamas #bahamas ***************************************** Help the videos stay alive by becoming a patron, donating or becoming a YouTube Member. Lewmar Ocean 40 ST two speed winches need to be serviced annually. With cold, foggy weather and little to no wind what else do you do but DIY projects. We dismantled the winch and soaked the parts in mineral spirits before giving them a good brushing. Having a Lewmar Winch Servicing Kit No. 7002 on hand is a good idea just in case parts needed to be replaced. Karen decided it was time to oil the teak down below. As always, we enjoyed our dancing, such as it was. Thank you to our great subscribers! Ya’ll are great!! I made a detailed DIY-video about the overhaul of the Clark pump of a Spectra watermaker. It's not a tutorial, but if you want to save yourself a lot of money by doing it yourself, this is probably a helpful documentary of the whole process. It's not as difficult as it looks! :-) Our website: https://www.anjakeesmaat.com/ Music: Royalty free music by YouTube, Kevin McLeod and Danosongs.com

We have to upgrade our solar power on 9 LIVES, install a radar system, and also improve the way we carry our dinghy. So, we ordered a custom-built aluminum radar arch from Nautical Creations in Kentucky and installed it to the catamaran, fine-tuning the fitment along the way. We also added some very simple davits. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We can't produce quality inspirational content indefinitely without the support of our fans. We made our own pushpit and pulpit seats!! Its been an incomplete job since we bought our yacht and one we thought we'd never be able to do ourselves. But if buying Saoirse has taught us anything, it's that , 'when you put your mind to anything, with a bit of research and hard work, you can accomplish it!' In this video, similarly to our video about the fabrication of our saloon table, we take you through the process of making the templates, timber plug, glassing the mold, then creating the fibreglass seats, fairing and painting - and what we ended up with was better than we imagined we could do.🙂 It was a long winded way of making the seats, we had considered doing them in timber but the thought of the long term maintenance put paid to that idea. We knew that getting someone else to make them for us would be costly because it is a lot of work, so we looked at the tables we have already made and figured we could probably pull this off if we researched, did it slowly and carefully and most importantly, paid attention to detail, It ultimately took us longer than expected because I was a little pedantic about the finer details, especially when it came to fairing and sanding. There were a few ill tempered moments 😡, when I was told I was taking it too far with the sanding, but it paid off in the end when we ended up with seats that, I think, are as good as any we could have bought or had made for us. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream. We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it. Much love

How we installed a Barricade Trail Force bumper with LED lights on our Jeep. The instructions for this bumper had to be the worst I have seen in a while, with the wiring not even included. If you have any mechanical skills you probably would not even look at instructions, I know we didn't, but if you need them, we hope our video helps because Barricade didn't. The fit of the bumper was pretty good, minus the back winch bolts you will see in the video. The wiring of the LED lights was really straight forward, and to run it right will take longer than the install of the bumper. You will also be entertained by our son and some of his friends as they patiently wait to go trailing while I finish video footage.  Jump To Topics In The Video: 00:00 How To Install Bumper With LED Lights 00:56 Removing Jeep Bumper 02:36 Install Barricade Trail Force bumper with LED lights 05:58 Barricade Trail Force bumper with LED lights D Rings 07:00 Install LED lights in Barricade Trail Force bumper 16:41 Test Barricade Trail Force bumper LED Lights 17:38 Our thoughts and bloopers of Bumper Install Barricade Trail Force HD Front Bumper with LED Lights for Jeep Wrangler 1987-2006 Heavy Duty Front Bumper 5/32" Steel Construction 2" x 0.120" Tubing LED Accent Lighting High Strength, D-Ring Mounts w/ 9,500 lb Pull Capacity 2-3/4 Inch D-Ring Pins Built-In Winch Plate for up to 12,000 lb Winch Two-Stage Textured Black Powdercoat Finish Weight: 64 lbs Fits 1987-2006 Jeep Wrangler YJ & TJ Models Perfect For Off-Road Use. Taking a look inside the engine bays of the Majestic 530 and Majestic 570 from Royal Cape Catamarans. For more information please visit us at https://royalcapecatamarans.com #royalcapecatamarans #majestic570 #majestic530 Before entering the cockpit one will notice the externally situated engine bays with dive compressor to fill the cylinders, which are kept in the accessible brackets. The bays are well ventilated, spacious and well laid out to facilitate easy access for cleaning and maintenance of the engines, the generator, the calorifiers, the fuel filters, the water maker / desalinator, the hydraulic rams, hydraulic tie-bar, emergency tillers, manual and electric bilge pumps, engine battery, shelving for consumables and compressor. We have also included a neat receptacle to store the heavy shore power cable that is retrieved using a Glendinning electric hose reel. The bays are easily accessible, well sealed with hydraulic lift support. They are sound proofed to avoid emissions of noise, separated to limit fumes and greasy equipment entering into the living areas. There is also ample space to store garbage bags with non-biodegradable items whilst cruising at sea. Song: Atch - Traveller Music provided by Vlog No Copyright Music. Welcome to the yard, and one of the first project of our season prep! Ryan wanted to change the cutlass bearing, which was due for a replacement after 13 years of good and loyal services. Since replacing the cutlass bearing involved removing the prop shaft, this seemed to be a good opportunity to also change the stern seal and learn how to align the prop shaft to the engine. We also changed the engine mounts, gave the prop and the shaft a good clean as well as cleaning anodes. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** JOIN THE CREW! ** Join our virtual crew of Patrons at: https://www.patreon.com/ryanandsophiesailing ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ** GEAR ** ⛵️Our boat: Polar Seal, 2007 Beneteau Oceanis 40, owners version (2 cabins layout).

I took some time to make a kayak sail. It worked so well that I made a video about it. I explain some of the things to consider if you happen to try doing this yourself. Check out the little voyage. Enjoy.

The deck framing is almost complete on Arabella. In this episode, Steve wraps up all the framing in the aft section by making a couple more deck beams and then framing in the hatch. This hatch will provide some storage but also some ventilation to the engine compartment. Meanwhile, Alix diligently works on the sill plate for the house top. The sill plate needs to fit snugly to the carlins and deck beams which frame the house top opening. They will then be joined at the corners via half lap joints and screwed down to provide a base for the house to built up off of but also for the decking to butt up against. Where the decking abuts the sill plate will then provide an ample surface for caulking around the house. Soon the work is going to shift to mocking up the house and the cockpit so that we start to figure out what we want the interior to look like! Thank you all for watching and supporting. Our little island is plentiful and we are living off grid on our small sailboat. Spearfishing fish, catching spiny lobster or conch and even gathering coconuts. Experience what life looks like when you avoid going to shore and haven't gone to the grocery store in a very long time. From sea to table, we made fantastic coconut snapper chowder and our own version of fast food. If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up! #sailing #offgridlivingsailboat #bahamas ***************************************** Help the videos stay alive by becoming a patron, donating or becoming a YouTube Member. We go over how to replace the IAC valve and the symptoms we saw that prompted us to change it. I know in the last sputtering episode we said it was the sparkplug, well it was, this issue came on over a month later. If you have a problem with your IAC valve it will cause huge driveability issues to the point it could be hazardous. Tools and parts: Air Control Valve IAC Compatible Replacement For 1991-1997 Jeep and Dodge 2.5L L4 OHV Oem: https://amzn.to/3qJjKJ2 Compression Tester Kit (8 Piece Set): https://amzn.to/2IEEOji Milwaukee 18-Volt Drill and Impact Driver Kit: https://amzn.to/2HfipZ5 268-Piece Husky Mechanics Tool Set: https://amzn.to/3kuGUzD Bad Idle Air Control Valve Symptoms Check Engine Light Comes On - This would a clear sign of an issue, too bad if you have a Jeep YJ there is no code for this issue. Randomly Fluctuating Engine Idle Speed - For us, the jeep would rev to around 2,000 RPM and if you aren't expecting this, it could cause you to maybe tap the car in front of you. Rougher Engine Idling - Since this does control your idle if rpm drops too low it would get rough. Funny that back in the day we would install cams that really made our idle seem rough. Frequent Engine Stalls - While this probably won't affect you much on the highway because the motion of the car will keep the engine running if you have to stop, stalling sucks. Fixing a Bad Idle Air Control Valve You can try to clean your ICA valve. Carburetor cleaner seems like a perfect choice to break up the carbon build-up Replace the IAC valve, for us, this was the solution. The build-up was so bad, it would have taken a lot of time to get the carbon off if it got it off at all. Cumberland Island | Sailing Georgia Coast | Machine Guns | Dungeness Mansion | Wild Horses | PILAR | EP50 Stuck in the US because of Covid, we found plenty of excitement in our recent sailing travel along the Georgia coast. Cumberland Island was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal. Our adventure includes: 00:00 Departing St. Simons Island Marina 1:48 MV Golden Ray Salvage 5:38 Entering St. Andrews Sound Inlet to ICW 6:15 King's Bay Submarine Base - Machine Guns pointed at us 7:58 Ice House Landing Dock - Cumberland Island, GA 8:49 Dungeness Castle Ruins - Cumberland Island, GA 12:31 Walking the ocean side beach - part of the 50 trail miles on Cumberland Island, GA 17:17 Saiing to Fernandino Harbor - Amelia Island, FL 18:56 Fort Clinch State Park - Amelia Island, FL 19:16 Neighborbor Belle Vita 19:22 Fernandina Beach Town 19:47 Leaving The Dock... Another Challenge 22:21 Late Afternoon Fishing Trip 23:03 Cumberland Island - Oysters for Happy Hour 23:48 Unidentified Mystery Ship headed to King's Bay Nuclear Sub Base in the dark of night 26:11 Sea Camp Dock Cumberland Island 26:26 Biking Cumberland Island, GA and visiting Stafford Beach 30:51 Head Back to ST. Simons Island 31:30 A rough ride departing St. Marys Inlet, FL 12/28 Today we sailed down from St. Simons Island to the south end of Cumberland Island. With no wind in the forecast, we decided to cruise down the ICW, something that we don’t do very often. It was a beautiful stretch of marsh river, but as always pay attention to marked shallow areas on your charts. We passed two boats stuck in the sand on our short 4 hr. trip. We passed the St. Mary’s nuclear submarine base, a 16,000 acre base with 5 subs carrying ballistic missiles with over 20 warheads each - with a little unnerving machine gun pointed at us as we passed an anchored sub. We anchored in East River right across from the Ice House, aptly called that because it was the literal ice house for the Carnegies when they lived on the island. Dinghy parking available on first come first serve basis. We visited the old Carnegie mansion that afternoon. Cumberland is the largest of Georgia’s Sea Island. We walked to the Dungeness Ruins, then to Dungeness Beach, and north to the Trail back to Sea Camp, which is a reasonable 6 mile hike that took about 3 hours. Cumberland Island National Seashore became official in 1972 when it was donated by the Carnegies. Wild horses roam the island freely, descendants of horses left behind by early settlers. The Dungeness Castle Ruins, which was destroyed by fire in 1959 is the main attraction. A remnant of the gilded era, it consists of the main castle, the Gardners’ tabby house, the recreational facility, cemetery, gardens and grounds. Carnegie also built several other mansions for his children, one called Greyfield - now an expensive hotel, and Plum Orchard, which is open for tours. Both more towards the north side of the island, you will need bikes or take a bus tour. There is also a “settlement” on the northern end by former slaves in the early 1890s. This contains the First African Baptist Church where JFK Jr. got married. 50 miles of hiking trails criss cross the island. Camping is also available. 12/29 Today, we sailed to Amelia Island, where we walked around town and visited the Fort for the afternoon. 12/30 After a morning on Amelia, we returned to Cumberland for a relaxing night on anchor again. We collected oysters and enjoyed for appetizers. 12/31 Today, we biked from the SeaCamp to the Stafford Beach and back. Tip: Arrive early at Sea Camp if you hope to rent some of the park’s bikes. Get in line before the ferry arrives so you have first dibs. 1/1 Sailed back to St Simons today, did a little boat maintenance upon arrival. Stephen and I spent the afternoon fishing down by the church. 1/2 Pauline and Bill returned home today. Stephen and I washed the boat, did general maintenance and cleaning and prepped for our early departure the next morning. We visited St. Simon’s Goulds Inlet and the local drive through liquor store. 1/3 630 AM depart for Charlotte. We working on wrapping up the last of the deck framing before we can get to a house top mockup. While Alix continues with fairing around the house top opening, Steve works on getting more short beams and knees installed in the stern. There are two more knees back there that need to go in and a few last short beams. Steve also explains in detail his technique for cutting his carlin joints. We hope you enjoyed this video and thank you for supporting! If you aren't subscribed we encourage you to do so and click the bell next to it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Intro Illustrations by Scott Ouderkirk from Glass Goat (The Wooden Boat Experience) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCu02y4RfEyiHqjTCaYpeq4w If you are interesting in supporting/helping here are a few ways: Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg Recurring support via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Original Soundtrack available at benfundis.bandcamp.com FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

THE BEST Fort Lauderdale Travel Tips for Cruisers Sailing South | Harbors Unknown Ep. 14 Known as the Yachting Capital of the World, Fort Lauderdale is a major manufacturing and maintenance center for yachts. With its many canals, and proximity to the Bahamas and Caribbean, it is also a popular yachting vacation stop, + home port for 42,000 boats, + approximately 100 marinas and boatyards. Fort Lauderdale is also home to Port Everglades, the nation's third busiest cruise port and Florida's deepest port. The inlet boasts a wide channel and is easily navigable. Cruisers making their way south should note there are few truly safe + large inlets along the southeast coast. After entering the inlet you can either head south to Hollywood which has a small, yet affordable marina or head north into Ft. Lauderdale. Heading into Ft. Lauderdale you’ll encounter the 17th causeway bridge with 55 foot clearance. It opens on the hour and half hour. There are a few options for marinas, moorings and anchorages nearby. Just north of the 17th causeway bridge on the west side is Fort Lauderdale Marina and on the east side is the Pier 66 Marina. Continuing north on the intercoastal you can navigate to Lake Silva, a small protected anchorage in a residential neighborhood. Next up is Bahia Mar which is more for mega yachts, then the Las Olas Marina which as of this publish date is still reasonably priced. Across from the marina on the south side of Las Olas bridge is a mooring ball field and north of the bridge just past the marina is what has become quite a popular anchorage. Once settled, those coming from international waters will of course need to check in at customs. The CBP office is about a 15 minute drive from the Las Olas marina, in an unexpected location. It seems that the CBP ROAM app can be used to report U.S. entry to CBP once a small vessel has returned to land from international waters. Definitely check the requirements for yourself. https://www.cbp.gov/travel/pleasure-boats-private-flyers/pleasure-boat-overview/roam West Marine, Boat Owners Warehouse, Sailorman + McDonald’s hardware are all located around the State Road 84 area and are a convenient stop if heading back to the marina. Many cruisers stop in Ft. Lauderdale because there are a few reputable repair shops including Just Catamarans. We highly recommend you leave time for a little exploring Fort Lauderdale. The beautiful beach is a great place to relax after a sail before you head out. Its soft sands, warm waters, and three nearby reefs invites scuba divers to enjoy one of mother nature’s greatest gifts. The South East Florida Reef Tract extends from Miami northward to Palm Beach. Greater Ft. Lauderdale accounts for 23 miles in the middle of the tract and the largest number of dive sites, with over 100 reef and wreck sites. There are three distinct ridges of natural reefs called 1st, 2nd, and 3rd reefs. The water taxi ride is a great way to see the city and learn about its history, even considering you have your own boat! You can pick it up right next to the Las Olas Marina and take it up the river to the shops + restaurants stop on Las Olas. It’s the perfect place to walk to our favorite bakery, Gran Forno. They have the most delicious baked goods and coffee. Many restaurants, shops and galleries line Las Olas Boulevard providing a pleasant afternoon. A short drive away is FATVillage. An arts district whose purpose is to promote the creation, exhibition, curation, research & education of emerging, contemporary artists. Every last Saturday of the month (pre-pandemic) the resident artists hosted a vibrant Art Walk open to the community showcasing new art exhibits, local artists and artisans selling gifts and goods, & a variety of food and entertainment. Just around the corner is Sistrunk Marketplace, a new food hall, brewery and marketplace. Featured art installations, unique artist kiosks, talented musicians & DJ’s represent South Florida’s upcoming talent. Cooking classes, distillery & tours, DJ academy & Khoffner brewery provide awesome entertainment options. One of our favorite ways to end the day is dinner at Coconuts, a local favorite. If you’re heading back from Las Olas you can take the water taxi and get off at the South End of Bahia Mar. You can also ride over in your dinghy & tie up at the dock. In our opinion it has the best sunset view of the intercoastal. Thanks so much for joining us this week!
