In this video, I share with you what I have been doing (racing) the status of Taylor Sailing, moving my products over to the Walmart online shopping center, and what videos are coming up later this year.
I made this basic sailboat racing vocabulary tutorial for our sailing club. Many of us newbies, including myself, are confused by the racing terms and jargon. This video was created to make the racing experience fun and exciting by removing some of the confusion surrounding these common race training terms and jargon. Time Line 00:00 to 00:31 Introduction 00:32 to 00:39 Points of sail 00:40 to 00:47 Starboard tack upwind 00:48 to 00:55 Port tack upwind 00:56 to 01:03 Starboard tack downwind 01:04 to 01:11 Port tack downwind 01:12 to 01:27 Lay lines 01:28 to 01:35 Rhumb line 01:36 to 01:43 Ladder rung lines 01:44 to 01:51 Basic sailing race course terms used 01:52 to 02:00 Thank you for watching and subscribe-like
Bought a pair of 1981 Sunfish that had been in a field for about 20 years. Thankfully this one was hull up and in the shade so no water intrusion. Sailed her a few times and handles very well.
Sailing - Low Cost DIY Racing Computer. This is an update on the previous videos showing an embedded DIY racing computer. As you all know, costs have skyrocketed and we may be looking at trying to stay under $200 after this is all done LOL!. I worked on a lot of the project details with the China vendor that makes the GPS and Bluetooth modules. Note that they make the GPS modules for high-end drone manufacturers so the quality is top-notch. I asked them for the NRE to make a Bluetooth and GPS system on a board so that I could develop an app to connect to the system. The NRE is about $5K USD so that is on hold for right now. So to keep the project moving I am working on a Flutter/Dart app and this video shows the prototype. The app will be able to use either GPS L1/L5 of the future BLE and GPS module. Note that most of the new iPhones and Android phones at the high end are waterproof. Let me know your thoughts and as soon as the season starts again in April I will start testing. Class legal? NO but . . . I am looking into if I can force the phone to be in magnetic compass mode ONLY and turn off the GPS for the class rules. Will they accept this? Time will tell but eventually, this is going to come up. Time Line: 00:00 to 00:37 intro 00:37 to 01:14 GPS L1 and L5 on Smartphones 01:14 to 01:32 Flutter and Dart for cross-platform app development 01:32 to 01:50 Prototype of the app - start mode pin and RC setup for the line 01:50 to 02:08 Prototype of the app = start mode with time and distance to line information 02:08 to 02:27 Prototype of the app = race mode with the heading, heel angle, and speed 02:27 to 02:45 Prototype of the settings screen 02:45 to 03:31 FUTURE - adding the GPS RTK with the BLE module to allow the GPS system to be located with a clear line of sight and improve performance.

However, if you are good with your hands and have worked with hobby electronics you might find these videos helpful. This is a multi-part tutorial showing you how to make a DIY sailing racing computer for under $150. This first video shows you how to setup the integrated development environment. I found this 1971 Buchan Star class racing sailboat on Marketplace for $500. She was destined for the junkyard for the aluminum in the trailer. This is part one of a series to bring this girl back to life and race her in 2023.
I wanted to share how I make all different sizes of sail bag in minutes for a fraction of the cost to purchase a new sail bag. Also I can customize the size, shape and type/placement of handles. Buying used sailboats I have discovered that often the sails don't have sail bags or that they are old, mildewed, or damaged. Thanks to the Star Facebook Group for sharing this video that helps guide you through rigging, tuning and sail trim for a legacy Star class sailboat.
I discovered the easy and low cost method to attach a messenger line to a metal halyard. In the past, I simply tied a bowline knot and taped over the mess. What a pain that has been on my 470 main halyard and jib halyard. I just redid my Star halyards and I am going to go back and use this method so that the lines flow smoothly. Also this method allows us to reuse the metal halyard instead of buying and whole new setup for $$$$ that we can use elsewhere!
