There are a lot of exciting things coming together at the moment. Steve installed the rest of the tie rods, Alix finished the sill for the deckhouse to sit on and we made a mockup of the cockpit! One task completely finished, one setting us up for the deckhouse construction when temperatures warm up and the last so that we can visualize the space the cockpit will occupy. We remove our vintage, err, discontinued, 37 year old marine head in preparation for our luxurious Jabsco Quiet Flush electric head along with trying to tackle an ambitious TO DO list! The key to staying happy during a 5 Day Lockdown on our small 33ft sailboat is to stay busy. Thus tearing apart the Yanmar 2GM diesel engine to try to see what's really wrong with it. All the uncertainties of the world during the pandemic make it so we are not really sure where to sail next. So figuring out what parts we might need or if the engine is even salvageable is key. But before the lockdown start we manage to get on land at Black Cay one last time to do some yoga and stretch our legs. Captain Stephen recently noticed some milky colored oil in our sail drive, when changing out a leaky O-ring. So, back to Thunderbolt Marine in Savannah - closest place that can haul out boat out of the water. What did we find? Fishing line wrapped around the prop tightened up and cut through the seal. WWWilliams did the sail drive seal replacement and also replaced a couple bearings. This repair job was pretty efficient. Out of the water at 730AM, repair done by 2PM, back in the water next day at 730AM. Back in business. Thanks all! In certain places cruisers have a difficult time finding somewhere to refill their cooking gas bottles. We use less cooking gas with an electric hob. Cooking with an electric hob when shore power is available doesn't create excess condensation inside the boat during the cooler months, when you're more likely to be in a marina or harbour where shore power is available. We have found several moments during the build of Arabella that are just incredibly satisfying. Getting the lead keel poured, getting the backbone assembled, standing up the molds, steaming in frames, getting the first planks on... etc. And now there is one that really feels good and sparks the imagination. We get to work on a mockup of the deck house. We can finally get a real idea of what the interior space of Arabella is going to be. This means that we can start planning things out in earnest. How we pulled our seized on Pitman Arm when just a Puller and PB Blaster won't work. In this ho to, we pull a rusted-on pitman arm off our old jeep to correct the steering for a 4-inch lift kit we are installing. Tools and parts: Conical Pitman Arm Puller: https://amzn.to/39xiTFo Milwaukee 18-Volt Drill and Impact Driver Kit: https://amzn.to/366BwxM Piece Husky Mechanics Tool Set: https://amzn.to/3kuGUzD You can rent a pitman arm puller from your local auto store if you don't want to buy one. We rented a puller but it didn't work for us. The first puller we trashed the threads trying to get the pitman arm off, even after spraying it down with PB Blaster. We did have an air chisel and weren't going to use a torch because this would melt the seals, so we grabbed the grinder. We then ground down far enough to leave very little metal so that we could use a hammer and chisel to crack the pitman arm. The pitman arm puller was left on with a lot of tension on it to ensure as it started cracking it would come off. It is wild to think that we started our DIY Lithium Batteries project one year ago, prior to our haul out, and to our other interior projects. After an entire YEAR of using this system we can conclude that upgrading to lithium was undoubtedly a great way to update Avocet to modern standards. By building our own batteries we not only learned the ins and outs of the entire system but we also saved money in the process, getting the most bang for our buck!
