Short run of merchandise available at acorntoarabella.com today: We've got planking offcuts of various sizes, frame offcuts from that closed-up port side of the boat, rejected copper rivets, and challenge coins from @SV Seeker. (Doug's launching in a couple of weeks, hope you're following!) ***BONUS CONTENT***: Also released today—this conversation with our naval architect, sailor, and racing friend Satchel regarding interior layout. We really dig into the details, and we wanted to present it to you totally uncut. See that here: https://youtu.be/RDxneIM3M8c Carolyn is back, and shows us how to prepare oakum (hemp fiber) for this temporary, special, and particular caulking job solely in preparation for pitching the bilge. This isn't like the caulking you might have seen around and about YouTube of late. The hemp, which along with being less expensive than cotton, is also more likely to release from the cooled pitch. We want the inboard edges of the planks to come together again when they're swelled and when we're ready to pay in the real caulking, and we explain how the oakum sets us up for success. What's the pitch? Jeffery's Marine Glue No. 2, which is flexible, rubbery, and solid even at very warm temperatures. It's a combination of bitumen and rosin, and when heated it flows into and conforms to the shape of difficult-to-reach bilge spaces created by the outboard faces of the backbone and the inboard faces of the planks. It's also a very, very good wood preservative. Through all this, we also get a brief look at what Carolyn carries for caulking tools, we receive some beautiful reefing hooks from Med Chandler of Ship's Coy Forge (https://www.shipscoyforge.com/), and you meet the sweet, sweet ladybird who makes the shop her home every summer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. A big reveal here: We have a close look, side by side, of Steve's plan for Arabella's interior laid alongside Atkins's fairly general layout he envisioned would fit the needs of most cruisers about a hundred years ago. This conversation between Steve and Satchel, our marine architect and sailor friend who has been consulting with us, covers a lot of smart questions about the sort of voyaging Arabella will do. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Catalina Smile Fix Part 2 continues the repair of our bilge and keel. After removing the keel bolts, it's time to remove the wood core. Meanwhile, we start work to fix our keel damage. These boys with boats never shy away from a challenge. Previously you saw us remove the keel bolts, and get the bilge ready for us to carve out the wood core and replace it with fiber glass. Catalina has detailed how the repair should go, and we are moving along right on track based on their guidelines. This is an issue that many older Catalina's suffer from, but this repair will fix the Catalina smile permanently. Meanwhile, Jake begins grinding away the paint from the bottom of the keel to fix the exterior and begin repairing the damage from when Ixion ran aground. The completion of this project will make our wrecked electric sailboat one step closer to not being wrecked any more! Thank you all for watching, and don't forget to subscribe, comment, and share. Perhaps one day we too will have the same refit acclaim as Sailing Uma! lol —————————————————————————- Who we are: Nick and Jake, gay sailor and filmmakers fresh from Los Angeles currently living in Cape Cod. It really feels like everything went wrong on our way back to Canada. We needed to get out of the USA because our travel visa would run out in the middle of hurricane season. This meant joggling the logistical nightmare of traveling in 2020 during the Covid Pandemic. We made it on our first flight and everything was smooth up until then. What happened in Washington airport was far from what we were expecting. Join us in this week's episode as we attempt to make it to Canada to complete a 14-Day Quarantine. After discovering emulsion in the sail drive oil of our yacht a Hanse 411 last week, we make the decision to travel down to Dunstaffnage marina to get lifted out so we can repair the sail drive by changing the seals. This week's episode details our journey with a variety of weather from fog to bright sunshine and pouring rain. We complete boat maintenance and find some time to explore the local area. Lee's boat is a 1983 Mason 43. We worked on our boats in the same boatyard for two years sharing the ups and downs of a DIY sailboat refit. Over the years we learned bits and pieces about his life. Learning to sail again, that’s what this journey through New York was. The adventure we had been waiting for, was the adventure we all needed. After we wrecked our electric sailboat, we didn’t know what our sailing journey would look like. Would we take time off, or would we dive head first into some diy boat projects. Alas, we didn’t know. We stumbled along, guessing at what the future held for the Ixion crew. Enter Captain Tom, who found us via our channel and social media. This journey reinvigorated our love for adventure, travel, and sailing. Not only did it allow us to get our sea legs again, but it even allowed us to visit an iconic gay history spot in New York city. Not only did we get to live as sailors, but we got to embrace who we were as gay sailors. Watch along on our livestream as we detail moments you didn’t see in the videos, how it came about, and how it affected us for the future moving forward.

The pesky, dangerous maple that serves as an anchor for the boathouse comes down in this episode, and Steve (who has worked in the past as an arborist, and of course, felled the trees for the lumber in Arabella) goes through a couple of specifics about how to safely drop large limbs from a tree, making them do what you want them to do. Then we're back on Arabella, using joggle sticks to create a pattern for the first bulkhead, which will also be the only one to create separate interior space in the boat. This somewhat private arrangement in the forepeak calls for a door, and it's time to hit the inventory of reclaimed frame and panel mahogany pieces that were salvaged from Victoria to see if anything suits the purpose. Thanks so much for watching, hope you enjoyed this one! It's especially important to join our newsletter, we're going to be launching a few short-run, limited availability things from Arabella herself that will be offered to the newsletter subscribers first. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Florida from Est to West Coast. We explored Hanna Park's lush forest and surfed it's beaches in between the typical hurricane season weather in Jacksonville. Then with our flight approaching we did one last roadtrip, this time to the Gulf of Mexico. Cedar Key was a quaint village with old buildings on stilts. We soaked it all in with a few beers and lots of seafood. Filmed in September 2020. If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up! #sailing #cedarkeyflorida #hannaparkjacksonville ***************************************** Help the videos stay alive by becoming a patron, donating or becoming a YouTube Member. This week we arrive in Holy Loch Marina in Dunoon where we finish off the last of the 'must do's' on our to do list.. but we don't let DIY stop us from having fun! We explore a beautiful forest - Puck's Glen! Puck's glen is described as a deep, woodland gorge with cascading waterfalls. We follow a beautiful trail that winds along a Victorian walkway up to the dramatic rocky gorge! and then... well, then we get stuck in a current.. Who are we? We are a family of three with three dogs, sailing the coasts of Scotland, exploring one island at a time – for now! There is no set route or plan. We will go where the wind and life take us. We have two golden retrievers and a bernese mountain dog – Hachi, Luna and Meems who sail with us. We sail on a 1995 Gib’Sea 472 who we are in the process of refitting, making our own and preparing for a big adventure. Connect with us! I also replaced the water pump gasket and found a lot of calcium deposits inside the pipes. In this video (pt2) https://youtu.be/cpu3snhnqiI I take apart and clean the oil cooler by removing the insert from the housing and flushing acid through the tubes. In this video - pt3: https://youtu.be/lkjJPvK6WcA I remove the heat exchanger/aftercooler insert, give it a clean and re-assemble everything back together.. with mixed results. Note to self - count the oil seals coming off - and count the new ones going in! Anchoring is something that can be very stressful. Loud wind noise and waves and next thing you know you're yelling back and forth. To maintain a happy relationship we've come up with the best solution to stop yelling at each others while anchoring. We communicate with hand signals this made our cruising left much less stressful. In this video we show you how to anchor with hand signals and we give you a few pointers. If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up! #sailing #howtoanchor #anchoring ***************************************** Help the videos stay alive by becoming a patron, donating or becoming a YouTube Member. EVERY Boat Expense IN DETAIL after 2 FULL YEARS of CARIBBEAN CRUISING. Since leaving the US, we've definitely had our share of issues, maintenance and upgrades. Once we hit Antigua and St. Martin (right about the 2 year mark for us), we suddenly had access to parts, service, and mostly, cheap shipping! We found ourselves in the midst of a 2-year checkup for Cecilia as we caught up on all she needed (and some things we knew we wanted). This week we give you a rundown of every single project, purchase, upgrade, and repair that pertained the boat itself (and our tender). We hope this gives you an idea of the kinds of expenses the sea life requires...both similar and very different to land life. Enjoy!! And be sure to SUBSCRIBE for WEEKLY CONTENT EVERY FRIDAY! A big part of strip-built construction isn't the glue-up itself, which is a satisfyingly quick process, but is the fairing and finishing process that comes after. Steve and volunteer Grant (thanks again, Grant!) fill large imperfections and voids in the seams of the glued strips with structural epoxy, then follow up that work with planing, sanding, and skim-coating with fairing filler. With the interior surface faired, it's time for a layer of epoxy primer... the same hard-wearing, two-part TotalProtect that went on the mizzen mast a couple months ago. And there's another first this week: The first peek at a painted surface inside Arabella, color and all. Luckily, Steve notices a big problem with one of the trees that anchors the boat house before its able to cause any damage to Grandpa Dave's farm implements or to the boat house itself. Next week we'll see that tree come down, and we hope you're here for it. We hope you enjoyed this episode, and we're grateful you're with us on this journey. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interested in getting involved, here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat Referral: Need something TotalBoat sells? Getting a small sailboat ready for hurricane season in Florida requires a few things if you are leaving your boat behind. With our US visa expiring and most borders closed down we decided our only options was to leave our sailboat at Green Cove Springs in Northern Florida. It was affordable and inland on the St. John's River. So it was all hands on deck taking down sails, solar panels and cleaning up. We were juggling hauling out with the challenges of having flight after flight cancelled due to Covid and the US/ Canadian borders being closed. And thank you once again to my sister Julie and her husband Sean for being the greatest hosts. This was filmed August 2020. If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up! #sailing #greencovespringmarina #hurricaneseasononaboat ***************************************** Help the videos stay alive by becoming a patron, donating or becoming a YouTube Member. We are in full energy management redesign aboard our catamaran Clarity, and we are doing something bold...we are removing our generator. This would have been unheard of a few years ago, but new lithium battery technology, better solar panels and alternators make it possible. In the midst of this change, we almost make a VERY expensive mistake with our new batteries. #solar #justcatamarans #generator #genset #cruising #theokellys #alternator #leopardcatamarans #diy #sailing #offgrid #tinyhome #amps #lithium #relionbatteries #clarity #battery Solar Energy Budget Video: https://youtu.be/-g8l-EQZA8A Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theokellys Consulting: https://www.sailclarity.com/consulting Squarespace 14 day free trial: https://squarespace.syuh.net/AvmDj iTunes Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/under-the-sheets-with-the-okellys/id1470844381 Private Fb Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/475364229906600/ Products we use: https://www.amazon.com/shop/nickokelly ___ Nick and Megan have been #sailing and living #OffTheGrid on and off for the past 20 years. We have done a lot of DIYs on this Jeep Wrangler, but our son is usually the only one in it. So we all jump in to hit the trails, which may have been a little much for mom. The wild stuff in this video is more at the end, our son wanted to start mom out a little slow. Now this jeep is outfitted with some modest trailing gear, of the links for the mods are in the playlist below. What probably helps this jeep out the most on the trail was changing the gears to 4.88. Then the 4-inch suspension lift coupled with the 1-inch body lift gives the clearance we need to run 33-inch tires, would not want to go much bigger on these axles. To make trailing easier, have a curved LED light bar with LED sidelights that seem to turn night into day. Upfront LED fog lights in a Barricade rock slider bumper to add a little more light down low. To add to the trailing enjoyment this Jeep has 1,800 watts of sound with enough highs to fill a valley and lows that will make your eardrums itch. For safety and recovery, we have the lights, but that just ain't enough. In the rough nestled in that Barricade bumper is a 9,000 lb winch with tow hooks. In the back, there is another Barricade bumper with the tow hooks. Then you always have to carry a tow strap, jack, some tools, and your brain to be safe on the trail. In this mini series of maintenance videos, I take apart the raw water cooling system of our Volvo Penta TMD22 marine diesel engine and quickly learn it's not as simple as it first seemed. In this first video (Part 1 of 3 videos) I dismantle and clean the muffler box, exhaust elbow, turbo and check the impeller and pipes. I also replace the water pump gasket and find a lot of calcium deposits inside the pipes which could indicate potential problems inside the heat exchanger. In Part 2: https://youtu.be/cpu3snhnqiI - I dismantle and clean the oil cooler. In Part 3: https://youtu.be/lkjJPvK6WcA - I dismantle and clean the heat exchanger and put the whole thing back together! Although these videos show maintenance work on a TMD22 marine diesel engine, many components and assembly techniques are similar across the Volvo Penta range, including: MD22L; MD22P; MD22L-B; MD22P-B; TMD22-B; TMD22P-C; TAMD22P-B; HS25A; HS25A-B; 120S-E; MS2A-E; MS2L-E; MS2B-L; TMD22B If you're a professional, expert or even an old salty sea dog with some good advice on exhaust elbows, turbos or mufflers on sailboats marine diesel engines, then please leave any constructive criticism, insight and advice in the comments below the videos. On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, we're spending time at one of our favorite islands in the Bahamas, Manjack Cay in the Abacos. Cruising life is not just about sailing and in this episode of Sailing on a Whim we spend our time on the island working on art projects and resurrecting a Val Trimaran from the 1970s. This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching learning how to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas. There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. The pandemic has thrown everyone a curveball and we are no exception. Now that life has settled down a bit for us, we are excited to be able to start sharing our adventures from this past year. We hope that you learn a little from our experiences and maybe inspire you to make changes to live the life you want! ***FILMED FEBRUARY 2020 *** —————————————————— SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW https://www.sailingonawhim https://www.youtube.com/sailingonawhim https://www.facebook.com/sailingonawhim https://www.instagram.com/sailing_on_... https://www.twitter.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— CONSIDERING BECOMING A PATRON https://www.patreon.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— GEAR: Cannon EOS Rebel SL2 https://amzn.to/2y2Hty1 Cannon Powershot G7x Mark II https://amzn.to/2S6rOVu DJI Mavic Air https://amzn.to/2W2OYgz GoPro Hero5 https://amzn.to/2S8FizU Fantasea Line FG7X II https://amzn.to/2xSuY8q Rode DDG-GO Deadcat https://amzn.to/2Y4AT4G DJI Mavic Pro Plantinum https://amzn.to/3eU5tUT —————————————————— RECOMMENDED READING: Learn to Sail – https://sailingonawhim.com/learn-to-sail Cruising Life – https://sailingonawhim.com/cruising-life Maintenance & Repair – https://sailingonawhim.com/maintenanc... Oh my... The windows are soooo slowwww... There is a good reason for that! The grease used back in the day turns to glue over time and nothing can move. Today's project is to remove the regulators, disassemble and clean them thoroughly. Then re-lube and re-install. The job took a few evenings, but is well worth it! I added nav lights to our True Kit Discovery 330. The installation went well and I'm pleased with the results. Attached is a parts list, some parts were sourced locally or was in my inventory. I did use heat shrink tubing on all the wires but this set wasn't covered in the video. In this episode Chris decides to do a sailboat safety check and finds some rather old and DANGEROUS 30 year old flares!! How do you dispose of flare guns safely? Don't worry, luckily our chandlery hold a flare amnesty day and so the flares were safely disposed off before any explosions happened onboard! The lovely Pav at Rigit UK surprises us with a new guard rail! This was one boat DIY job we were ready to tackle ourselves but Pav thought this was better left to the experts. Thanks Pav! We finally get our new anchor chain and shackle her onto our Delta Anchor! It was Father's Day and so we had Chris's Dad Roy on hand to help us drill a hole through our anchor. Thank you Roy!! We are slowly but surely getting ready for a life on anchor and cannot wait! This week on my free sailboat I've only managed a bit of prep and fairing.... I forgot to say why! I've been working on the website and the first page is done and in que to go LIVE! I will be adding more to the webpage as I go along including more details that go with the episode (so that I don't talk so much in an episode). And much more! #freesailboat #sailing #fairing [ WAYS TO SUPPORT PUFFINS RECOVERY! ] PayPal - https://www.paypal.me/sailingpuffin I keep up to date an Amazon wist list just to either remind me or keep track of things I find I need, but if you wish to support on a one off basis I'd be more than grateful!
