With all of our holding tank issues and the price of dump outs we figured it was about time to try a composing head. With the recommendation from many of our boating friends we went with the Natures Head and are so far very impressed. The second truck camper upgrade we did was to our water system. Again, with recommendations from many boat friends, we installed the Seagull water filter. it was super simple to install and we are super happy with it. Replacing the copper bonding strap and zinc anodes sounds an easy enough maintenance job, but to reach the bolt which attaches the strap to the keel, the grey water bilge needs to be cleaned out first! This is one of the filthiest job on an Amel and I even had to custom make most of the tools myself. I'm just thankful I brought my cordless power tools onboard! Hi Guys, In this vlog I tackle my biggest challenge yet - the dreaded multi fuel stove! It needed maintenance and repaired so badly. So while the weather is good I decided to get it done! I removed the door, replaced the fire rope, removed the old glass replaced it and resealed. I also painted the stove and haven't broke the stove or myself in the process. Really pleased! Buttoning up the forward bulkhead with coats of sealer and varnish makes way for some interior joinery in the forepeak that Steve has plenty of experience producing. Tools that have long sat dormant in the shop are whizzed back into life to create square mortise and tenon joints. We were hoping that, for the most part, Victoria's interior would fit well into analog places in Arabella, but of course, with the differences in the sizes of the hulls, there were bound to be places where we'd have to put together some amalgamations of new and old material to make it all happen. Here's an instance where more oak comes into play with reclaimed mahogany. More mockups, more testing, more experimenting, more thinking about the future. Not like this! If there's one lesson that comes from this maintenance blog, it's.. if it ain't broke don't fix it! I thought I'd check the impeller on a the sea water pump as part of a routine engine check.. then decided to replace it. (WHY?!) So I swapped out a perfectly good impeller and ended making a total **** up of it by leaving off the impeller cap, snapping the head off one of the housing screws, breaking one of the impeller blades and to cap it all, I noticed a nasty crack on the water pump pulley.. so needed to replace that as well :/ So a one hour boat maintenance job turned into a day long epic! After our long sprint through British Columbia's Inside Passage on our sailboat, we stop in Ketchikan in order to stretch the legs and get some much needed engine maintenance done. Removing and installing garbage disposal is a task most DIY homeowners will have to do at some point. We are going over how to remove our leaking garbage disposal and replace it with the InSinkErator Garbage Disposal, an American-Made product. We have a few blunders as I show things that went wrong, and we run into some gross black water issues, not a fan of plumbing. In the past, we've had a look in the garage at the piles, en masse, of the mahogany lumber that came out of Victoria, but this week's video goes through a pretty extensive and specific inventory of what we have to play with for reclaimed wood as we put the interior together. Carolyn patterns a partial bulkhead, while Steve gets to finishing the bulkhead that defines the forepeak. This is one of the first times in a long time where 90 degree angles have come into play, as the trim for the passage to the forepeak comes together. Finish work, meaning sanding and applying coatings, is satisfying for so many reasons. You'll be seeing us do a lot of sanding, painting, and varnishing, slowly revealing the beautiful patterns of once-thirsty, glowing grain. Catalina Smile Fix finally reaches its conclusion with the fiberglassing of the bilge. This diy project was one of the biggest we've done to date, but this sailboat will no longer need to worry about the Catalina smile. In our previous videos, we removed the keel bolts, removed the wood coring, and got ready to fiberglass. This week, we grind out the bilge to make sure it's ready for glass. After templating, we begin cutting the fiberglass, and installing it layer by layer. Also, we completely layout the process we followed to fix the Catalina smile that Catalina Yachts put out for sailors years ago so they could solve the problem on their own. This Chinese junk Schooner designed by Thomas Colvin was absolutely spectacular. We were fortunate enough to get out for the SV Sea Dragon's last sail of the year. Alex's brother just purchased this schooner in the summer of 2020 and it was his first sailboat. So along with him and his family we learned a whole new way of sailing. The junk rig and the junk sails are so unique and very different from our Bermudan sloop sailboat. We couldn't have asked for better conditions, light wind to play with all four sails without being overpowered and a sunny day on the Georgian Bay. We had noticed our sailboat's stern was sitting heavy in the water and blistering was beginning to appear above the antifoul line.. so urgent action was needed! Raising the boat's waterline sounds easy in theory, but measuring, taping and repainting the antifoul was trickier than expected. We used Hempels polyenamel paint to do the rub-rail and bootline, Gelshield 2 pack epoxy for osmosis protection and Jotuns Seaforce 90 for the antifoul. It wasn't the only tricky job we tackled. We also repaired gelcoat damage under one of the chainplates and beneath the rubbing strake. Bayliner's design team has out done themselves again! For a 24' boat this boat has space to spare: The cockpit layout is second to none in this size boat and even up to 26' boats. I do a custom install on a Blaze Professional LUX Marine Grade Portable grill on our Jeanneau 440 sailboat. We really liked the Blaze grill but mounting options were limited especially for a sailboat. So I engineered a mount for my stern pulpit. We finally manage to replace the leaking sail drive seals, and change the emulsified oil. While the boat is out we scrub the bottom, grease the seacocks, clean the fridge keel cooling plate, and clean the propeller. Once back in the water we take her for a test sail to Oban. Once there we have a fantastic meal out and I travel to Glasgow by train to get my second Covid Jab. Its a relief to both be fully vaccinated at last.
