So when it goes wrong, it's a big problem. We couldn't charge batteries from either shore power or our #Cumminsonan​ generator but luckily we could still charge from our #volvopenta​ engine alternator and prop-shaft generator. So while we waited the six weeks for it to be repaired, we had to move constantly to re-charge the batteries and had to live as energy efficiently as possible! Sometimes you take one step forward and two steps back. This week I learned a big lesson on sailboat maintenance, as to what happens when they clean the bottom of your boat while your marine air conditioner is running. It makes for a one big mess. Checkout what we had to do to deal with this issue and how you can help prevent it and keep you internal raw water lines clean. The good news is that since I am the one doing the refit on Reverie, I know how everything is connected and how it works, so it makes it a little easier when you have to deal with an issue. ABANDONED SAILING BOAT Trip to Eastbourne! This week we have some friends and a dog aboard sailing Indiana! As you know we are still novices, so take every opportunity we can, to learn how to sail our sailboat (as we bought her with no experience). In this episode we plot a course to Eastbourne with the intention of mooring up there for the night. We slip the lines, strap on the lifejackets and head on out of the marina. After a few hours we weren’t making any way, with wind and tide dead against us! We finally made the decision to abandon our sailboat trip to Eastbourne and headed back to Brighton Marina. We had a great day still and learned a lot, one important take, is that we loved having a dog onboard and hope we can have a sailboat dog of our own one day! As we get nearer to completion of our Seawind Catamaran we are starting to finalize our options for the boat. One of the most important options choice for us was if and which engines to upgrade to. The debate of inboard diesel vs gas outboard engines is a very interesting one in the sailing catamaran world. It is one that really had us on the fence. In this episode we are building the "foundations" for our new Bow Roller, this is larger so that our 30kg SPADE anchor can be stored on it. In the process we are upgrading small backing plates from plywood and thin stainless steel to FR4 (high density, fireproof Epoxy and Fibreglass boards) bedded on thickened epoxy. We are refitting a 44 year old Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Two years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings. We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all electric (motor, cooking etc). Now that the inside is dry (thanks to new windows, new hatches and leak chasing) we are fitting her out for live-aboard world cruising. The Emmert patternmaker's vise, which was a generous and beautiful gift from a supporter, will be just aft of center to make the best use of both the bench's surface and the vise's clamping capabilities. Maybe we dip a little deep into the process to make this bench, but it's such an important piece of interior furniture for Arabella, made with a mixture of some of the loveliest and most storied wood we have, that will provide a working surface that's extremely useful even before it's completed. It will speed up the work on the interior, eliminating the need to carry pieces up and down from the shed's benches to work on them. Chris has been tinkering on engines, cars, and boats since he was a kid and has been refining his skills every since! When our friends Baron and Heather asked if he would be interested in building them a NEW bowsprit he took the challenge head on and ended up with excellent results. Remedy, their Hans Christian 43', had a mahogany bowsprit that was compromised with termites. Fortunately the bugs stopped munching at the sprit so the rest of their boat was okay, but it definitely left their rig in a weak state as the sprit is a crucial part of it all. After a few years of studying and working hard we decided it was time to make a change. We needed a change that would allow us to spend more time together, give us a better work/life balance, and the freedom to travel. While we still had time on our side, we wanted to use it to live rather than use it to chase money. Learning to sail was the answer. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages. With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. Steve is building this boat to suit the sort of adventuring he sees himself doing with the friends he thinks might come along for it, and as he says in this week's video, building an extremely useful workbench to serve as storage and a berth is a physical commitment to the fact that he will never stop building or making. He also intends to be extremely self-sufficient in even the remotest of places, or to help fellow cruisers along the way. Wes is here for this undertaking, and constructing this detail of the interior takes advantage of his particular skills. He came to woodworking thanks to the inspiration and mentorship of his grandfather, and enjoys making furniture and other beautiful things for himself in his workshop at his home in Tennessee. Wilson's Legacy is such a cool boat! She would be an awesome cruising trimaran for someone looking to finish the build and go sailing. Please understand that the scope of this project is massive. If you're looking to take it on be realistic in that it will take years to finish if you DIY and a ton of money. If you're looking to pay someone else to work on it, be aware it could end up costing tens, to hundreds of thousands of dollars. The biggest issue is logistics. It's really hard to find an affordable place to store a boat that's 31' wide. You're going to pay thousands and thousands in storage. The best case scenario is if you own some land on the water where she can stay moored or dry stored for free while you finish her.
