Episode 022 Our very first sailing experience was with Captain Ted from Sailing Aitutaki who took us sailing around Aitutaki lagoon on a Hobie 16. When we decided we were going to have a trip to the Cook Islands, a sail with Captain Ted was on the top of our list. We were so excited to be sailing with Captain Ted again and getting to see so many of the remote motus within the lagoon. Join us as Captain Ted takes us around the world’s most beautiful lagoon using nothing but wind and sail to get us from one motu to the next. Sit back, relax and come with us as we explore Aitutaki’s lagoon with Sailing Aitutaki. When visiting Aitutaki, Cook Islands this is a must do! We hope you enjoy it! As always, thanks for watching. Sincere thanks to Charlotte Rockstar Jones for composing and recording Te Tāiko's theme song. Please remember to subscribe, like, comment - it helps us out! After a few years of studying and working hard we decided it was time to make a change. We needed a change that would allow us to spend more time together, give us a better work/life balance, and the freedom to travel. While we still had time on our side, we wanted to use it to live rather than use it to chase money. Learning to sail was the answer. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages. With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. In the meantime, follow along with us as we navigate this new lifestyle whilst sharpening our skills exploring New Zealand waters. #boatlife #boat #travelvlog #digitalnomad #lifestyle #sailing #travel #hobiecat #catamaran

#sailing #panama #amel #boatlife #boatyard #marina #boatrepair We did not meet the friendliest of people in this episode. Linton Bay was a little bit strange and after a wild ride through the "Tunnel of Love", we found another odd boatyard in the middle of the jungle, known as "Panamarina". With very little to keep us here we rapidly moved onto the entrance to Panama Canal and the marina known as Shelter Bay which is located just near to the Breakwater and the only one on this side of the canal. We had a whole load of batteries, chargers and controllers delivered here . Getting jobs done was not so simple or affordable on our budget so we cancelled all jobs and made a quick visit to Panama City to collect Grandad . Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** In an upgrade long overdue, Starry Horizons gets a new set of sails custom made for her by Zoom Sails! We've upgraded from dacron to a hydranet mainsail and genoa and got a slightly lighter Code 0 as well. She will never be a true performance catamaran, but we hope that the combo of new sails and losing some weight during our refit will result in a bit more speed! Of course, you can't put new sails on the boat without a rig, so first we had to work with the yard to get the mast stepped and our new Harken furler fitted. Once again our rigger Tim worked his magic and everything fit just like we intended! ================ Affiliate Links ================ Out Chasing Stars is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to amazon.com. Surviving KOMODO DRAGON encounter OUR AMAZING WEEK Sailing Indonesia Ep 184 Our sailing journey through Indonesia continues to follow in Rob's brother's footprints as we gentle sail our live aboard catamaran down the south coast of Flores Island replete with its dramatic live volcanic landscape. The ocean was equally alive with bloom of plankton bringing dolphins and devil rays to the surface to feed. Unfortunately the abundance of sea life attracted the attention of some traditional Indonesian fishermen, who prey on the devil rays. As we watched the fishermen at work Rob's attention was distracted by one of the oceans largest and gentlest creatures. A lone 8 metre Whale Shark was happily gorging himself on the plankton. Our sailing teenagers jumped in the water to get a better look. Then it was off to Rinca Island in search of the legendary Komodo dragon. The Island did not disappoint. We saw several Dragons during our stay and a whole lot of plastic waste too. Thank you to Sam from SV Allusive for the supplementary drone footage of the Komodo dragon walking on the beach and pexels.com for dragon on thumbnail Music Luna Keller - I don't know where I'm going David Mumford - Ball and chain Musicbed.comThank you for helping keep us afloat and supporting the creative process. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #TheCruisingKiwis

In this video, we go over the various Lithium batteries we considered before deciding to design our own prototype battery. These batteries will be used on our 50' Hybrid Performance Cruising Catamaran, called S/V Lynx, as Captain Blood and crew sail around the planet on a circumnavigation voyage. But first we have to build out kit catamaran. We will then sail our custom built DIY catamaran to distant shores as we cruise and adventure on the sailing boat we are constructing after having collaborated on this new Solitiare 1520 model Schionning Designs. www.svlynx.com 0:00:00-Intro - Shipping of Kit Delayed! 0:01:56-Title 0:05:39-Battery Chemistry 0:09:50-Prototyping our Battery 0:18:17-Building & Testing 0:20:15-Battery Wrap-Up 0:20:27-Shipping Woes Option 0:21:13-Viewer Questions 0:23:18-Patron thanks and Outro

We build an integrated diesel fuel polishing system in our sailboat's engine room by utilizing existing filters and plumbing. To so so, we simply branched off the return line, installed a fuel pump and a few valves, and then plumbed back into the return manifold. This simple set up not only allows us to polish our diesel fuel, but it also provides the ability to pump diesel fuel to and from any of our boat's 3 fuel tanks. ~ Ben, Tambi, & Molly | "SAILBOATSTORY" Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE and join us every FRIDAY for a new episode! Join us for a visit in a marine propeller shop, where a CNC lathe and other specialized tools are used to machine our propeller shaft. At Accutech, https://accutechmarine.com/, we walk you through the process, and show off some other very cool things they're able to do in the propeller shop. We also hang the rudder for the first time in its place, and get to see what it all looks like. It's a big reveal! As is the view from the inside as the sealed, faired, painted, routed, then painted-again overhead of the cabin trunk is put into place on the cabin house. Then the cabin trunk is fiberglassed, effectively making what was once strips of cedar, inappropriate for planking or other parts of the boat, one solid piece of waterproof, composite material. It is now monocoque—the outside of the soft cedar has been transformed into a structurally hard, durable, easily maintained surface. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Had to do maintenance on my Mercury 2.5 hp outboard motor. This was the simplest way to make a stand and test tank. It only works with small engines. For a bigger engine add a plywood pad on both ends and screw though it sandwiching the garbage can for added strenght.

Our catamaran Bimini was in TERRIBLE shape and we did not want to spend the money on a professional.... Who needs professionals! In this video we (mostly Becky) took on the massive project of making a new Bimini for our Catamaran Sailboat. We scored a great deal on fabric from Ebay and we had already purchased a sailrite sewing machine a couple years ago. This bimini is not a simple project. The Bimini needed to have two windows for sail trim observation as well as four solar panel attachments. Thanks for watching! We learn about the Sicomin Epoxy Expanding Foam and decide it will be most suitable product to use for filling that empty sump tank inside the keel. We create structural stiffeners (can't think of a better name for it ;) ) between the layers of the foam to further strengthen the keel. #boatrefit #boatproject #diyboat #oysteryachts #boatyard

This week we head down the Cape Cod Canal to Newport, RI on our Leopard 45 Sailing Catamaran. We explore Newport and then sail up to Barrington, RI where we haul the boat for some much needed maintenance. Time to get those windows re-bedded and a new bottom job. The bottom was hairy and full of barnacles. All that under growth really slows the boat down, and Jeff HATES to go slow. Thanks for watching, and don't forget to subscribe. #safeharborcovehavenmarina #newportri #capecodcanal

Episode 021 The weather in the past year has made living on board and sailing in New Zealand challenging. In desperate need of some sunshine and warmer weather, we took a trip to one of our favourite tropical island paradises, the Cook Islands. The Cook Islands hold a very special place for the both of us. Many of our most memorable moments have been in the Cook Islands. Who knew there could be so many different colour blues, browns and greens? Join us as we explore Aitutaki - where we had our first sailing experience and which has the most beautiful lagoon in the world. We chose this thumbnail because we think it speaks for itself - there is nothing we felt we could do that would be more beautiful. #boatlife #boat #travelvlog #digitalnomad #lifestyle #sailing #travel

This week's episode pretty much sums up boat life: Highs and lows in beautiful places, broken stuff, and unforgettable magic moments all mixed in between! We run into some tricky problems with the generator, which we depend on quite a bit these days for things like making water and running the AC for Sierra's afternoon naps when temps hit about 100 degrees inside the boat. After a bit of trouble shooting I was pretty sure I knew what the problem was, but with no access to the replacement parts I had to get a little creative with the solution...I think a lot of you that enjoy the maintenance/repairs/technical stuff will find this one super interesting! We also do our first night dive in YEARS on the Fang Ming which you saw us dive in last week's episode with the frisky turtle. Night dives have always been a favorite of ours, but doing it on a wreck is an incredibly rare treat. Ship wrecks already have such a feeling of mystery and eeriness even during the day time, so when you add in the element of darkness and tunnel vision, it's a seriously amazing experience. We return to the boat plans for a reminder on that. Also in here: neat little trick for finding the center of something, how and where to start a taper to ensure strength while still removing some material, and a sweet look in on an afternoon with Steve and Aaron, harvesting more bronze hardware. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. They murdered my brother sailing SE Asia - Ep 183 Together with my sailing family we are taking our live aboard catamaran sailing the route my brother Kerry took through earthquake prone South east Asia before his life was cut short, in 1978 by the murderous, insane orders of Pol Pots Khmer Rouge Cambodia. Before his devastating capture, torture and murder, Kerry would write letters home to our family. We would live vicariously through his descriptions of his sailing adventures. Now I am completing a childhood dream to follow his sailing journey through Indonesia and beyond. We also mention volcano Whakaari White Island and wish to acknowledge those who lost loved ones three years ago during the earthquake eruption off the coast of Whakatane. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through earthquake prone Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978.

We use our last few weeks in Adelaide to fix the worst job on a boat, a leaking toilet. We remove our Spinlock Deck Organisers after we found the sheaves were mostly seized or very tight to turn and clean them up, getting them working perfectly once again. Our new social media stickers arrive and we install them, before checking out 2 of the Illuminate Adelaide shows, Light Cycles and the Wisdom of AI Light. We’re Chris and Jo and we have been living on our Seawind 1260 since January 2019. In our first year we bring our yacht down the east coast of Australia and sail it out to New Caledonia. After cruising further north up the east coast of Australia in 2020, we decide to circumnavigate Australia during 2021 and 2022. We had previously owned fishing and water skiing boats, but after a couple years crewing in South Australia we decided to jump right in and make a sea change. Our sailboat, 9 LIVES, came with an old Avon Redcrest hypalon inflatable dinghy from 1983. We have since named it Cloud 9. The dinghy is a very old design. It is not a RIB with a solid fiberglass hull and flat transom, though it does have a wooden floor insert and a small motor mount on the back that can handle up to 2.5 hp. Though outdated and slow, it does have some benefits. It is fairly lightweight, and can be disassembled, deflated, and easily stored in a locker when rolled up. So, we decided to give it a new lease on life. It had one small hole in the front tube, so I cut out a small hypalon patch and used a special UV-inhibited glue from Weaver Adhesives. I used this glue to reattach some of the loose edges of the rub strips and rubber hardware on the boat, as well. To cover up the old registration numbers and names painted on the stern, we prepared the hypalon on the top of the dinghy and then painted it with white Flex Seal! It is good for hypalon, after all, and provides a nice white coating that is waterproof and also provides some UV protection to the most vulnerable parts of the dinghy. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We can't produce quality inspirational content indefinitely without the support of our fans. The Sailing Project Artemis S3. Ep 47 Happy Wednesday all. This week I took a day off from a very busy end of year, to get my batteries charged, cover some electrical items and remove my stearing wheel to get her ready to wrap in a french twist. I also wanted to look over my keel repair and decide if i should fix one hairline crack on the trailing edge. I try to get my batts topped off once every two weeks while on the hard. Season three will still have boat work but I plan to add much more fun.... Episode 5 NJ to Stony Point on the Hudson River Our 2004 cruising from Baltimore and up the Erie Canal through Upstate New York. We are traveling on our 4087 Bayliner. Presented in this series are some short segments that were originally produced as test footage. For several PBS channels. However, the project did not get funding, so the short clips are all that remain. It was a lot of fun and work! In addition to being a boat cruising show it also has a history aspect. Subscribe now! We arrived with our 44ft sailboat in a waterfall in Brazil!!! Our boat has been to the same place in the past and we were really anxious to get to this place since we started sailing the Brazilian coast over a year ago. And here we were: in Bahia with our boat exploring beautiful areas that we hear so much about. We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). The last season has been a dream coming true… we are exploring the Brazilian coast with OUR BOAT that we called Odd.. But wait? What happened to the house? Check out our website to know more about it https://www.oddlifecrafting.com/blog We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. We are building a Schionning Designs 1520 Performance Kit Catamaran. This combination cruising/performance cat is a brand-new model we helped design. This DIY boat has all our Top 25 features we wanted when we started searching for the sailboat we wanted to build. So, we thought we would share all 25 features in S/V Lynx. So, join Captain Blood and the Admiral as we go over these desired items while we work on modifying our electric outboard motor, which is part of our combinations hybrid/diesel propulsion system. We will start the build in 2023 and set out to circumnavigate the world by sailboat once the construction of our cat is completed. In this final installment, I show the correct and probably the simplest method to lay out an octagon (there are many ways to do this). I fix the surface checking, remove knots, and reinforce a few glue joints. I check for deflection (less than 1 %), weigh the mast and give a proper breakdown of the cost. The mast dimensions are taken from out of tables from the book: Design and Build your own Junk Rig by Derek Van Loan. ***Benefactors Bulkhead Alert*** There are only 25 spaces left to fill on the bulkhead.
