The sound gets better at 13:11! Thanks for your patience. We had the mics turned down from the noisy day before, when we were walking around a crowded show grounds. Steve and Annie B met up with John Harris, owner and CEO of Chesapeake Light Craft www.clcboats.com, to talk tender design and selection. We are looking at the possibilities offered by three different Atkin-designed dinghies, and John helps us think about the type of cruising Steve wants to do, the adventures he wants to have in a sailing and rowing tender, and which design will be the best fit. We also discuss design alteration and what's acceptable for changing the building method, length overall (LOA), or other attributes of these designs. We're thinking about strip-building the Fay at this point. We also get a look at some vintage books that John has been collecting over time that were published by MotorBoating magazine, a beautiful and informative periodical that offered smart discussions on designs... many from Atkin himself. The image serving as a thumbnail is a picture of Chesapeake Light Craft's Eastport Pram. Find out more here: https://www.clcboats.com/shop/boats/wooden-sailboat-kits/eastport-pram/eastport-pram-rowing-sailing-kit.html At 13:16, Steve and John turn their attention to the Tenderly Dinghy. Annie B wrote a design review about it a couple of years ago, and you can read it here: https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/tenderly/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building a 38' wooden boat in Steve's backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. We set sail into the big blue and do a non-stop passage all the way from Jacksonville to West Palm beach. Our first step is to navigate the strong current of the St. John's River and pull over at Sister's Creek free dock. Then it's a 2 night crossing along the Florida Coast. Light winds, beautiful sunrise and sunsets with a few more surprises along the way. Some amazing ones. Filmed end of February 2021. If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up! #sailing #sailingflorida #liveaboard ***************************************** Help the videos stay alive by becoming a patron, donating or becoming a YouTube Member. The boat was on autopilot at the time and it started behaving erratically and then cut out all together. I went down below and could actually smell the drive unit burning up. Something was pretty critically wrong with it! If you're a professional, expert or even an old salty sea dog with some good advice on servicing autopilots, raymarine electronics or clutch switches on sailboats or Amels in general, then please leave any constructive criticism, insight and advice in the comments below the videos. Sailing Life Caught at Mermaid Reef - Ep 124 It takes two days and nights to sail from Dampier to the pristine coral atolls called The Rowley Shoals. There is a choice of three atolls to visit here, we chose to pull up at Mermaid Reef. After a drift dive along the outer reef wall with Sailing Zatara we returned to the boat to discover we were not the only things drifting about in the waters of the marine park. Indonesian fisherman were busy all day poaching, hundreds of pieces of plastic rubbish could be found floating through the lagoon and there looked to be something sinister about the large unidentified object that was being carried by the current towards the reef. you for helping keep us afloat and supporting the creative process. Rob, Rachel, Finn, Declan, Ivan https://www.patreon.com/CruisingKiwis BACK STORY In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob decided to row a tiny seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and Rachel purchased Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 18, Declan 16 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #NeverStopWanderingNeverStopWondering. #TheCruisingKiwis
A couple of interesting projects are completed in this video. "Shaping the Stem and Scarfing the Sheer Stringer" try saying that 3 times quickly. Working out of my homestead shop I lay out and shape the stem, and then I make a cool scarfing jig to create long scarf joints for the shear stringer. Things are coming together quickly and the WR 650 looks more and more like the iconic ocean cruiser that she is destined to become. Working Towards the Galley & Alix Update - Episode 183 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat
Oh what a tangled web we weave! Anyone will tell you about the compromises in nearly all liveaboard choices, and to be sure at least a vast majority of cubic inches are considered and cogitated upon, this week's episode takes a hard 90-degree turn into an area of the boat we thought we'd be able to leave for another few weeks. That sends us on a flashback to a couple of months ago, when Steve and Carolyn went to town on some locust for an important piece of the galley that we've kept off to the side for some time. We do plenty of work that we don't show in these videos in between the half-week of sanding this and that or while we wait for multiple coats of sealer, varnish, primer, or paint. Alix gives us an update at the top of the episode—he'll be setting up his own workshop, looking after his dad at home, and hopes to take on Arabella projects that he can work on there. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat Referral: Need something TotalBoat sells? Series of videos which covers maintenance jobs during a 7 week visit to Cloudy Bay in Spring’21 This Part 3 mainly covers aspects of mast maintenance: - Re-installation of Selden gooseneck and vang mast fittings - Installing Selden mast spinnaker pole traveler - Rebuilding all 6 Selden spreader bars - Adding 2 mast steps at the mast top - Installing a new wind instrument cable and socket into the mast - Re-soldering the LOPO masthead light - Modifying how the cabin floor boards are secured This extensive boat maintenance took place due to Covid pandemic which on a negative note caused us to defer our next sailing adventure to autumn 2021, but on a positive note gave us this opportunity to get Cloudy Bay’s systems in top shape before we cruise more remote parts of the world.

Tiny land yacht using parts from an old solar car. I first tried at home with a handheld fan and it quite worked. I was getting frustrated but before throwing it all away, I decided to try outside. Great idea you see. This thing flies!! Not windy at all, just breezy. Have a look at the water coming towards the camera... Sail is made from a very thin fridge bag. You can glue it. I instead used a thermal sealing device to make a tube to insert the bbq skewer. The wheels are cheap plastic and very slippery, so I put some thin rubber bands. I bet the neck of a party balloon will work even better. A cork with an indentation is all it takes to clamp the sewing string and set the angle of the boom.
The final preparations are coming together and we are getting so close to untie the lines from Green Cove Springs Marina. But with boat life there's always a few more boat projects to do even when you think you're ready. We finally receive our new VHF antenna and our fan for the fridge. We install our solar and hook it all to our new lithium batteries. We also hoist our sails and the night before we wanted to leave we realize that none of our nav lights work. If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up! #sailing #greencovespringsmarina #boatlife ***************************************** Help the videos stay alive by becoming a patron, donating or becoming a YouTube Member. Cruising on a sailboat as a family is great but it also has it's challenges, sail, film, do maintenance on the boat and take care of a baby can make us very busy but luckily reinforcements are coming, a first mate/nanny is on his way and we'll enjoy every minute of it. ⇢ JOIN THE CREW! We had an awesome sail into Noosa and found ourselves tucked away behind a hedland to bunker down while some crazy weather passed through. The days went on and on waiting and waiting for an opportunity to leave Noosa and finally when I came my engine didn’t turn on and my zodiac popped! Christmas was close by at this stage and my crew decided to leave the boat. Which left me alone onboard stuck in a river with only a lot of issues to try and fix before my departure as soon as the weather and my boat would permit. So I buckled down to try to solve all of my problems alone. This was the first time being onboard alone and the first time trying to fix my engine. Haha or zodiac... Let’s just say it took a bit longer to trouble shoot as I was learning a lot in these times. Hope you liked the video. the next one is already complete so ill be posting that in a week :) HIT THE SUBSCRIBE BUTTON :D if you haven't already. really helps me and the algorithm out :D Thanks for always watching the videos I really appreciate it! In this episode we continue with the "foundations" for our new Bow Roller, this is larger so that our 30kg SPADE anchor can be stored on it. Here we use some FR4 (high density, fireproof Epoxy and Fibreglass boards) scraps bedded on thickened epoxy to fill to deck level. We are refitting a 44 year old Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Two years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings. We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all electric (motor, cooking etc). Now that the inside is dry (thanks to new windows, new hatches and leak chasing) we are fitting her out for live-aboard world cruising. Lots more detail on our blog at https://sustainablesailing.net/ We are on Ko-Fi! where you can buy us a coffee :-) https://ko-fi.com/sustainablesailing Track: Run Wild Music by: https://slip.stream/
In this episode we cover our bright orange paint, work on the rudder assembly, and prepare to re-enter the water. We also FORGET to fill a hole in the hull until the very last second! Toryn and Dani met in 2010 while on the same equestrian vaulting team. Best described as gymnastics and dance on a moving horse, vaulting was only the first of many quirky adventures we’ve embarked on together. We think this one is our best one yet! A machinist and graphic designer, we’re uniquely prepared to undertake a retrofit of this scale while documenting the entire process. We’re also passionate about sharing the ups and downs of a larger scale DIY refit and encouraging others to reach towards their off grid, on-the-water dreams. Join us as we rebuild Luja and then cruise Canada's Gulf Islands and beyond. Hi Guys, This vlog started off great, we were so excited to be heading towards Wales along the Staffs and Worcs canal and then onto the Shropshire Union Canal. Unfortunately things took an unexpected turn when I became very ill and required hospital treatment, abruptly ending the trip. I always want to show both sides of living on a narrowboat and getting ill definitely has its challenges under normal circumstances. When you combine this with living on a boat it can get complicated. I hope you enjoy this vlog. Kayleigh I'm Kayleigh and along with my two dogs Hugo and Coco we will full time on board our 57ft narrowboat Slievenamon. My second Narrowboat which I am currently in the process of renovating. I'm working on making the inside liveable before tackling the many exterior projects and maintenance this boat is more than ready for! Join me as I renovate this boat from the inside out! Subscribe and welcome aboard - follow me on my narrowboat journey, where I will show what its really like living and navigating the English waterways as a solo female. This week we are in an atoll called Fakarava, we have our two year anniversary and a well deserved day off. Kieran spoils me with a special present, we spend the rest of that day just enjoying life on the water. The following day we decide to rent push-bikes and discover more of the beautiful atoll we’re anchored in. I’m in love with the Polynesians people, everyone we have meet are so nice. Big or small, they all smile and say hi (that doesn’t happen in Sweden). Cycling around the atoll is so relaxing, we stop on the inside of the atoll for a swim in the turquoise water (paradise!!). A day well spent, with no boat maintenance, editing, or working. We needed to do this for us. Sailing the world is much more then just sunshine and consistent 15+ wind, a lot goes into living this lifestyle. Thank you all for watching our videos, commenting and subscribing. We love you all! The arduous sail to the Virgin Islands comes to an end as we make our arrival through the islands of the Caribbean. Once we are well North of Guadalupe, we finally get to turn down wind and have the powerful trade winds push us at record speeds towards our anchorage in the US Virgin Islands. We sail away from St. Maarten, into the vast bluewater of the Atlantic Ocean as we begin the 2500 mile transatlantic journey to Horta, Azores. Sailing across the Atlantic is not to be taken lightly, we will encounter storms and gear failure. There is no one to rescue us if we have a problem at sea. We prepare by stocking the boat with spare parts, provisions, and some maintenance to ensure our sailboat is ready to go! Then we raise our sails and head to the open sea. #sailing #boatlife #boating #boat #yachting #yacht #sea #sailboat #sailaway We also show you some sailing basics as we head off on our passage. Sailing 101 stuff like adjusting the traveler, unfurling the genoa, raising the anchor, and more. This is our sailboat story of our live on board. We launched our boat in July of 2019 to sail away and circumnavigate the worlds oceans via Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope. We are going West to East, or the hard way. We sail shorthanded, with the two of us and our rescue dog turned sailing dog, Roxy. We are Kate and Curtis, two racing sailors from the Great Lakes that sold it all to live on a tiny home on the sea, off the grid, and experience the world from a different perspective. We now make sailing videos to share this with you. We try to share some sailing basics with you that will make you a better sailor, experience gained from our time sailboat racing. Like you we watched sailing channels before we were living on a sailboat, like sailing uma, sailing soulianis, sailing la vagabonde, or mj sailing. We want to share our success and fails with you in fun videos that are relaxing and inspirational. This week it's just what it says on the tin. Steve goes through making the four remaining drawers for the workbench after he finishes the proof-of-concept drawer he and Wes started. Victoria's drawers went from impossible-to-open to dry and super wiggly in just the short time she was here in the front yard. Drawing from those observations, Steve comes up with a drawer solution with just seven fasteners each, and no glued joints, which will hopefully allow these to expand and contract in changing humidity levels. The drawer slides are of slippery UHMW polyethylene bars that we ordered from McMaster Carr. It was easy to cut and the drawers slide very well on them. We also finally received and unboxed the cook stove and diesel heater that were on the Wishlist—thank you to everyone who gave to the wishlist and who continue to send support toward the things that are left. As we work on the interior, we occasionally add a thing or two, and when we see the great many names there we can't help but smile. Thanks for watching! See ya next Friday. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Series of videos which covers maintenance jobs during a 7 week visit to Cloudy Bay in Spring’21 This Part 2 covers: - Re-installation of the Aquadrive System: thrust bearing, CV joint and PSS shaft seal - Rebuilding all the Selden Furlex hydraulic furling motors (genoa, cutter & mast) - Rebuilding a Selden halyard swivel - Modifications to the mast head - Taking our Avon life raft for service - Modifications to the bow thruster This extensive boat maintenance took place due to Covid pandemic which on a negative note caused us to defer our next sailing adventure to autumn 2021, but on a positive note gave us this opportunity to get Cloudy Bay’s systems in top shape before we cruise more remote parts of the world.

You can be part of the crew for less than the price of a coffee. https://www.patreon.com/CruisingKiwis Dampier is a small isolated mining town in the north of Western Australia. At first sight there's not much to do here, but dig a little and there are lots of stories to tell about the characters that travelled from far and wide as pioneers when the mines and harbour first opened in the 1960's. Many of these people were men, they were single and they were lonely. Nothing quite takes the bite out of being alone than a pet. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #TheCruisingKiwis #sailing vlog

In this episode we sail to the gorgeous Melaque on Mexico's Pacific coast, dodging breaching humpback whales on the way! We explore the town and sample the local palapa bar scene before heading to the nearby lagoon anchorage of Barra de Navidad. If you're wondering what all the grunting and groaning is about at the beginning of the episode, don't worry it's just the First Mate trying to lift the anchor (and 120 feet of chain) by hand, as we practice a drill for when the windlass next lets us down! We also did a lot of sailing on and off the anchor as we hopped between bays in the Tenacatita area, preparing for the day that the Captain's maintenance finally catches up with him, and the engine gives up! Of course... that may not be so far away, as the alternator bracket is already hanging by a thread on the front of the engine, so it makes sense not to run it too much until we get it repaired! Peter and Tom are gay sailors who learned to sail relatively recently in the San Francisco Bay, before casting off the lines to cruise Mexico and sail around the world! Thank you!
Here we give some background looking at the decisions being implemented in our video "Refit progress, backing plate for our new bow roller" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kelsi_CUHuY (that is the video I was trying to point to).
