We are completely re-rigging our 1977 Rival 38 with Dyneema synthetic rigging. That includes all shrouds, stays and even chainplates for both masts of our ketch rig. This series will cover all the design choices, the practicalities of a completely DIY re-rig and then how it works out when we go sailing. Our goal is a rig that is: - stronger - lighter - cheaper - allows us to sail faster - lasts longer - can be DIY maintained even replaced, anywhere in the world We are refitting a 44 year old Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Two years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all electric (motor, cooking etc). Our masts are both down and have been almost completely stripped, then painted with 2 coats epoxy primer (with epoxy filler between coats) 1 coat of two part undercoat 2 coats of two part top coat We have fitted new FR4 backing plates for the mizzen chainplates and are getting ready to do the backing plates for the main mast chainplates. Our Chainplates are essentially an overhand knot soft shackle with the "eye" above deck (the shrouds get lashed to this). The knot is below the backing plate. Not only are we fitting Dyneema chainplates we are also having a Dyneema forestay which means no roller reefing. So we are modifying our original sails to be hank on (with webbing hanks). We have upgraded our Bow Roller to support this. The furniture's dimensions and "footprints" in the boat are the most important things to nail down. The navigation table, also called a chart table, is a spot on the boat that will be a hub, of sorts. We'll likely have some phone charging ports there, perhaps a seat where someone can work comfortably, and communication devices such as SSB and VHF, if we go with both, will be located here most likely. Nearly everything in this wooden boat is anchored to deck beams or the bilge stringers, rather than to a ceiling and to frames, so that Steve can easily perform belowdecks repairs or rearranging later. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, they set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. They broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error they have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Their plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s they hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Buckle up! As the Captain hires a car and whisks the First Mate off on his long-promised tour of Puerto Vallarta! The only tiny problem is, that with the shopping list so full, there's no time for sightseeing, instead we get the diesel injectors serviced, stock up on many bits and pieces for all the upcoming maintenance project, and proceed to tear Bohemia apart making them happen! We began with the bowsprit, designing and having a mini-sprit made to fly our spinnaker more comfortably. We also managed to fit in some fun, by commissioning Bohemia's new factory of fizz (our homemade bottomless SodaStream knock off) and helping to deliver our good friend Julian's boat, to the boatyard for her haulout. The real Bahamas cruising started here in the Northern Abacos. Boat life can be a rollercoaster of logistics, weather planning and change of plans but it can be pure bliss like what we experienced this week. We left Great Sale Cay behind and set sail for Barracouta rock in the middle of the Little Bahama Bank. It was kind of weird and exciting at the same time to drop the hook with no land in sight other than this tiny limestone rock. We were not disappointed as we jumped in and Cory speared us a delicious lunch and supper. Another short hop and we made it to Double-Breasted Cays. Since in was already late in the day we decided to go for a short dinghy adventure in between the small islands. I felt like I was in paradise with this spectacular landscape and riding the current. Our time at Double-Breasted was wonderful and the lack of wind combined with glass water made for perfect snorkel and spearfishing. Filmed March 2021. In our latest Sailing Seagull South episode we discover milky oil in our sail drive again when we lift out for maintenance! So we drain the oil from our 120S Volvo sail drive and remove the propeller. It soon becomes apparent that the in shaft has become scored and it is this allowing water to leak in. After nearly 20 years of sailing we shouldn't be complaining. In order to avoid an expensive replacement shaft we fit sleeves over the scoring to repair the leak. Hopefully watching how its done can help others with the same problem. Fingers crossed it works. Our DIY Boat refit progress during a wet and very windy half term holiday. Despite winds over 50mph and lots of rain we made more progress on our Bow Roller (including testing it with both chain and the 30kg Spade anchor). Jane started making our Dyneema Chainplates. Plus lots of destruction in our saloon with new plans for the layout. We are refitting a 44 year old Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Two years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings. We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all electric (motor, cooking etc). Now that the inside is dry (thanks to new windows, new hatches and leak chasing) we are fitting her out for live-aboard world cruising. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, they set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We cannot believe this is our 35th episode of sailing seagull south, we hope you are enjoying following a travel Vlog as we explore by yacht during our retirement.
