Wow, what a crazy time. We rush to complete a long list of projects, all while hosting guests aboard Talisman during the Annapolis Boat Show. Our open house was a huge success, with over 30 people attending on Saturday, with others coming by Friday, Sunday, and Monday. But the best was getting to meet the other YouTubers. James from Sailing Zingaro slept aboard Talisman (we were in a hotel), plus Jordan from Sailing Project Atticus stopped by. It was great fun all around, and helped take the edge off of several really daunting issues we were facing.

In this video I show you how to make fiberglass "peanut butter" and how to make a bond between two pieces of plywood before you fiberglass. This may be useful if you need to make modifications or repairs to your boat. These techniques are commonly used to make, "Stitch and Glue" boats and can also be used to fillet bond plywood structures on your sailboat. The snorkelling along this coast is fabulous and we even get to see some turtles. Our friends on SY Blackmoon https://instagram.com/sailingblackmoon?utm_medium=copy_link show the kids how to spearfish and Darroch manages to spear his first fish which he cleans out and prepares for dinner. We set off early to avoid the strong winds as we head back to St Anne where we clean the hull and prepare the boat for the passage to Curacao. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, they set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. They broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error they have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Their plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s they hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. This is our 4th and final video in our financial series. We hope the videos have been helpful and informative especially for those getting ready to buy a boat. In the first three videos, we focused on celebrating a successful first year on the water, we discuss whether we would buy another charter boat, and we shared all of our costs of upgrading and equipping our 2015 Leopard 44 Catamaran. This video focuses on the cost of Boat and Living expenses. Under each category, we discuss 5 sub-categories. Boat Expenses: Boat Insurance, Repair/Maintenance, Gov't Fees, Dockage, and Fuel Living Expenses: Provisioning, Land Travel, Communications, Miscellaneous, and Health Care. For 20 minutes, we provide the cost of each category and some of the purchases contributed to the total cost. We knew that our first year would be our most expensive as we had a lot of one-off purchases. We anticipate a significant decrease in our monthly expenses as we move forward. Enjoy the video and please leave us a comment with your thoughts! We love hearing from you. #sailing #sailboat #sailingprojects #LIVINGEXPENSES #FIRSTYEAR #LEOPARD NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. Hopefully, you will be as BLOWN AWAY from watching, as we are in experiencing and producing our adventures! HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT US? If you wish to support our video efforts, all we ask is that you SUBSCRIBE, give a THUMBS UP, SHARE our videos with your friends, AND COMMENT! WOULD YOU LIKE TO GET TO KNOW US MORE DEEPLY? There are a lot of steps to each of the things we do on Arabella, especially in the interior, and between those multiple paint coats drying, that epoxy curing, and intense reading about 12 V DC electrical systems, there's plenty to do around and about to prepare for winter. Last week we re-covered the bottom of the boat shed and hooked Akiva up with a new platform, this week we do a few other important chores. We don't often get a chance to show what's involved with caring for the tools we use, and testing, flushing, and replacing coolant is a part of that practice of care when it comes to the big thickness planer. Big Aaron comes by with one of his Foxfire books, looking for banjo material. Little Aaron gets behind the wheel of the farm truck, this time with a little more finesse than the last time. To order these books full of Appalachian culture and simple living, visit www.Foxfire.org. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building a 38' wooden boat in Steve's backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Using Phenolic Microballoons to fair the top of the new bow roller support. Visiting the boat after Storm Arwen for less than 24 hours to check for damage and make more progress on the bow roller despite cold weather.. We are refitting a 44 year old Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Two years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings. We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all electric (motor, cooking etc). Now that the inside is dry (thanks to new windows, new hatches and leak chasing) we are fitting her out for live-aboard world cruising. Lots more detail on our blog at https://sustainablesailing.net/ We are on Ko-Fi! where you can buy us a coffee :-) https://ko-fi.com/sustainablesailing Track: Liquid Sky Music by Slip.stream: https://slip.stream/tracks/a25036a9-e83e-41a0-b03d-f006bf32f29d

Fitting our force 10 - Three burner cooker into a small galley PLUS We give you a little heads up on "reverse parking" a 25 ton steel long keeled yacht with no bow thruster or stern thruster by DRUDGING the anchor ! PLUS After waiting for two months for a gas fitting to turn up , we give up and steal one from the BBQ so that we can FINALLY fit the #force10 cooker into Blown Away our 1970's steel ketch that I bought way back in 2001 as a #fixerupper #Christmasiscoming and we are still on anchor among the greek islands, will the storms finally push us into submission and we head for a marina ? I don't actually know the answer to that, but I'm getting tired of night time anchor watch and the dinghy trip before walking the dog in the rain. In this episode I tackle a fiberglass defies gravity project. hanging fiberglass upside down isn't all that difficult, but there is a trick to it. gravity is always pulling down on your wet out fiberglass. to get it to say up while it cures or defies gravity, requires a surface wet out with thickened epoxy, let it sit until it gets tacky, then lay up the fiberglass cloth dry, and wet out in place with epoxy thinned with acetone. this system works great, the acetone evaporates leaving the wet out fabric and epoxy to cure. this process can be repeated to laminate as many layers as needed to make up the required thickness. Be aware that epoxy can get very hot and even catch fire so don't do too many layers at once. that being said I was able to get 1/2 in thickness with no problem. https://www.patreon.com/sailing_samantas https://paypal.me/SailingSamantas?country.x=US&locale.x=en_US

Fitting Dyneema Chainplates on a 44 year old boat?! We had better test our novel solution! We are changing all the standing rigging on our 1977 Rival 38 to Dyneema synthetic rigging. That includes all shrouds, stays and even the chainplates for both masts of our ketch rig. Here we start tensioning our chainplate loops and do a first load test. To learn how to make these see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jU_mmdbQeCQ ("Make an EASY Amsteel soft shackle with overhand knot - includes break tests!" from HowNOT2) This is the second episode in our Dyneema series that will cover all the design choices, the practicalities of a completely DIY re-rig and then how it works out when we go sailing. Our goal is a rig that is: - stronger - lighter - cheaper - allows us to sail faster - lasts longer - can be DIY maintained even replaced, anywhere in the world We are refitting a 44 year old Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Two years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all electric (motor, cooking etc). Our masts are both down and have been almost completely stripped, then painted with: 2 coats epoxy primer (with epoxy filler between coats) 1 coat of two part undercoat 2 coats of two part top coat We have fitted new FR4 backing plates for the mizzen chainplates and are getting ready to do the backing plates for the main mast chainplates. Our Chainplates are essentially an overhand knot soft shackle with the "eye" above deck (the shrouds get lashed to this). The knot is below the backing plate. Not only are we fitting Dyneema chainplates we are also having a Dyneema forestay which means no roller reefing. So we are modifying our original sails to be hank on (with webbing hanks). We have upgraded our Bow Roller to support this. Lots more detail on our blog at https://sustainablesailing.net/ If you would like to encourage us then you can support us on Ko-Fi! https://ko-fi.com/sustainablesailing Or visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ #DyneemaRigging #DyneemaStandingRigging #BoatRefit

How to change oil for a Volvo 5 cylinder engine and what to look out for. The Volvo doesn't use the normal filter you find on most American cars. It has an outer plastic case that houses a replaceable filter, so don't jab a screwdriver through it to take it off. Budget Volvo Mirror Change: https://youtu.be/wH7fZJQbEME How Often Should You Change Your Oil Your vehicle's age, type of oil, and how you use it determine how often you should replace your oil. In the past, it was common to change the oil every 3,000 miles, but modern lubricants typically recommend changing the oil every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Additionally, full-synthetic motor oil could allow your car's engine to go up to 15,000 miles between servicing! If your driving conditions fall under the below categories. Climates that are extremely hot, cold, or dusty Majority of trips are short (5 miles or less) High RPM Driving (Motor Sports) Constant stop-and-go driving Heavy loads or towing The more rigorous maintenance schedule outlined in your owner's manual should be used to maintain your car. Jack Up Your Car Safely When lifting your car to change the oil, here are steps that will ensure success. Shift the vehicle into park "manual transmission leave in gear" Engage emergency brake Block rear tire Use factory lift point or control arm to jack up car Before crawling under the vehicle, place a jack stand under it After jacking up the vehicle we like to ush on the car from the side to make sure it is secure. Is the Centerboard on our sailboat a PROBLEM? | Episode 180 When we first bought Saoirse, we had no idea why there was a large pulley sitting on the counter. Low and behold we found out it was for our centerboard. We did a little bit of maintenance to it before we set off on our adventure. But since we’ve had leaking issues at the pin, we want to drop it and inspect for any damage or other leak points. It also needs a fresh coat of paint. Making love Island style - sailing sex education Ep 132 Love is in the air and nowhere more so than the turquoise clear waters around long Island WA. Female turtles are arriving in their droves, closely followed by many frisky males, who show up hoping to get to know as many females as they can get their flippers around. We witnessed the whole turtle reproductive cycle from conception to hatching when we were on the east coast of Australia last November. It’s a story we have been longing to tell for a whole year. So, we are taking you back to the Great Barrier Islands of Lady Musgrave and North West Island to watch what was definitely one of our top ten amazing moments since we have lived full time on our boat. In our spare time we also rescued a Noddy Tern whom we named ‘Glen’. Music Lunar Keller - I don't know where I'm going Kaina - Home Kaina - Home instrumental Tim Halperin - Paradise David Mumford - Ball and Chain Thank you to SV Chasing Eden and Mary Fulton for supplementary Drone and night turtle hatching footage respectively. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #NeverStopWanderingNeverStopWondering. #TheCruisingKiwis

"Before the snow flies," is a busy time around a farm, and this year it involves improvements to the shed, fixing Akiva's platform, and doing a few other labor-intensive tasks for which we had a passionate group of volunteers to help with. Thank you very much to Noah, Bill, Thomas, Adam, Paul, Jerome, Randy, and Bill for your time, talent, and effort! Steve approached this project knowing a fair bit about woodworking, while respecting the fact that he needed to learn some specific skills for boatbuilding. He's consulted all sorts of people along the way with deep and varied experience in boat building and wooden boat restoration in order to get that knowledge. When it comes to sails and rigging, the same is true, and in this video we take you along with us to talk to a few pros. Only a small bit of our conversations are here, as there were long pauses for contemplation or for our friends to study the plans as they spoke. Joe Mello, the pro-rigger at R&W Rope https://rwrope.com/ walked through Arabella's rig with Steve, and we got a little closer to knowing what we're going to do with some spots on the boat where there are options that would require tweaks in the design. Here's a little more about Joe: https://www.tradeonlytoday.com/industry-news/rw-rope-acquires-rigging-solutions-llc Here's more about Captain Bob Glover, who's sitting all the way to the left in the R&W Rope segment: https://rwrope.com/blogs/news/meet-captain-robert-c-glover-iii Harold Burnham is an absolute legend. Boat designer, builder, sailor... and as it turns out, a wise mentor. "I'm not going to tell you how to do it, I'll tell you the way I do it, and I hope it wouldn't imply that it's the right way to do it," he says. He's built his own sails, and is encouraging us to do the same, so we went to see a bit of how he went about making sails for his boat, and to get advice about what we can glean or change from the plans. Please visit Harold's website to learn more about his boat, Ardellle, and about schooner Sylvina W. Beal. https://schoonerardelle.com/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat Referral: Need something TotalBoat sells? BROKEN engine mounts and OSMOSIS on the rudder. Preparing Florence for the next ocean passage proved to be a bigger problem than we anticipated. Hauling Florence out of the water in Seychelles and finding more problems under the waterline put us in a race against time to try and get everything fixed before our date to re-launch. On top of that the travel lift that was supposed to lift us in broke down. Boat yard time is never easy, but this time the boat maintenance was especially challenging. We have been sailing around the world for over 5 years after setting off from England in 2016 on board our 37ft sail boat Florence. Join us as we share the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, Sailing offshore across the Oceans and exploring remote locations with our own little tiny house. Sailing without engine is something we still try to do even though we rebuilt the motor last year. We left Allans-Pensacola Cay behind and pulled anchor under sail. With the wind from behind it made it perfect to fly the gennaker and to even drop anchor with it. It was a perfect day on the sea of Abacos. We made the most of our time at Powell Cay with a walk across the island followed by some successful spearfishing. Series of videos which covers maintenance jobs during a 7 week visit to Cloudy Bay in Spring’21 This Part 4 has a rather strong plumbing theme. - Replacing seals on the hydraulic outhaul cylinder - Replacing impeller on the deck wash pump, and re-plumbing - Replacing pressure safety valve on the domestic hot water tank - Re-plumbing the domestic hot water tank and various manifolds This extensive boat maintenance took place due to Covid pandemic which on a negative note caused us to defer our next sailing adventure to autumn 2021, but on a positive note gave us this opportunity to get Cloudy Bay’s systems in top shape before we cruise more remote parts of the world. Boat maintenance – Part 3 - HR54 Cloudy Bay – Apr-Jun'21. S20 Ep3

We strip and replace the diesel filter system to the heater and find we still have an issue in the fuel supply so investigate further to find a blockage in the metering valve of the heater itself. With heat restored we get back to life on board. Full article in Multihulls World 142: http://www.multihulls-world.com/us/boat-review-test-catamaran-trimaran/0115-1088-TS-42-MARSAUDON-COMPOSITES.html Our video onboard the ORC 42 catamaran Six years after the launch of the first TS42 - and some twenty units sold - the Marsaudon Composites yard has reworked the deck plan, overall design and accommodation, to offer us the ORC 42 - TS have in the meantime become ORC. The displacement (12,800 lbs/5.8 t) is unchanged: this is half that of most catamarans of this length! And it is precisely the compact size, ease of handling and ease of maintenance that are also the assets of this superb machine. The ORC 42 is always fun to helm and performs well racing. The uncluttered styling of the layout, combined with meticulous ergonomics, does not prevent the cocooning feeling that is appreciated when blue water cruising. Builder: Marsaudon Composites Length: 42’7” (12.98 m) Beam: 24’4” (7.42 m) Light displacement: 12,800 lbs (5.8 t) Draft: 5’3” (1.60 m) Mainsail area: 603 sq ft (56 m²) Solent: 370 sq ft (34.4 m²) Engines: 2 x 30 HP Log on to our website to discover over 500 multihulls tests!
