Drawers Galores! How did we end up with TOO MUCH storage space in our 26ft tiny home on wheels?! I guess we nailed our tiny home design! But looks like this pair of minimalists are going to have to buy more stuff to put in all this storage space! The past 15 weeks you've watched us work around the clock to turn this dumpy airstream trailer into our dream tiny home on wheels. Well, we now have less than 48 hours to make this thing move in ready!!!😳 Why? Because we have to move!!! THE FINISH LINE IS IN SIGHT! We just need to bust through a box build (drawer) marathon to get there! 👊 This episode we FINISH the carpentry in our tiny home on wheels (boy does that ever feel good to say)! Next episode is the one we have aaaall been waiting for!!! Thanks for watching! Did you miss last week's tiny home build episode? Catch up here: https://youtu.be/R_DG7swHepY New here? Our current tiny home is a vintage Airstream trailer nestled in the woods here in the Canadian Pacific Northwest! We like to call her Streamy, our adventure basecamp! Sounds dreamy right? Well let us tell you that it isn't as easy as it looks & the process of building our dream tiny home on wheels (in just 60 days) was freaking hard!!! When we're not enduring these self-imposed suffer-fests (i.e. our DIY projects & long grueling hikes up mountainsides) you'll find us out on the ocean, living and sailing around the PNW on our little sailboat. She's a Catalina 30 and we've been enjoying the challenge of restoring her & teaching ourselves how to sail! OUR STORY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt8aijVtK_E I (Allison, the Newfie) met James (the Aussie) while working on a remote island 3 years ago. A decade working in healthcare has helped us both to appreciate the preciousness of this one beautiful life we've been given. Viewing TIME as our most valuable gift, we've been feeling an urgency in our lives to Live All Out! We decided to make some BOLD moves, hit PAUSE on our conventional careers & work full time, turning our DREAMS into reality. This is the beginning of our YouTube journey & over the next few weeks we will be sharing our first steps towards making full-time adventure possible. We'll be posting weekly videos that document our DIY projects, tiny-home living & our land & sea adventures. Much love, A & J Connect with us! Facebook https://www.facebook.com/allisonandja... Pirmą kartą į savo video įdėjau "how-to" stiliaus epizodą. Prieš užsiimdamas grandinės cinkavimu namie, pats YouTube ieškojau patarimų, kaip tą teisingai daryti. Dabar jau suprantu, kodėl paieška nebuvo labai lengva. Kiti darbai pamažu juda link pabaigos, nors vis atsiranda naujų. Dar savaitė-kita, ir leisimės jūromis vėl. #anchor chain #diy electroplating #zinc electroplating

Quarantine/isolation on a sailboat, another unexpected marina stay for a rigging inspection and forestay replacement, building a paddle board rack and some more boat maintenance! In this week's episode we show you what its like to isolate on a sailboat and then we head into the marina to have our rigging inspection done and a forestay replacement, Jason thinks of a creative way to use up our left over stainless steel tubing from our solar arch and makes a paddleboard rack for the outside of the boat and I do some much needed oiling maintenance on our wooden shower grate. Now we're finally feeling ready to check out of Turkey and sail back through the Greek Islands! #lostcitytrek #lostcity #travelcolombia #travelfamily #treks #besttreks #travel When someone said they were headed to Colombia to trek to the Lost City, my ears pricked up as I imagined adventure, stories, beautiful places and a good challenging hike. This is the 1st part of the trek, the 2nd part will be in the next episode. We were not disappointed and set off with 10 other people adults and 18 kids, ranging from ages 6 to 17 plus us 5 so we had a massive group. We decided to go with Turcol who organise these treks and they provided an additional 2 translators, 2 guides and 2 cooks as well as a pack of mules to carry all the food. We all had to carry our own gear. The first day we were transported up to the mountains by 4 wheel drive over the tricky terrain . Lunch was a generous portion of chicken, rice, plantain and salad. Then off we set on a 4 - 5 hour hike , some of it through thick mud in the pouring rain. We stayed the first night in base camp 1 by a flowing river. The second day was a long hike of 7 - 8 hours in total to the 2nd base camp, stopping on the way for lunch and fruit snacks. The 3rd day, we did the very steep trail to the Lost City at the top where we learnt more about the Kogi Indians and how and why they built this city here. On the same day we had to hike back to another base camp where we stayed the night before the final Day 4 trek to the bottom again. Sleeping & eating: Every night we slept in rows of wooden bunk beds with good mosquito nets, clean sheets, pillows and blankets. The food was excellent, a healthy mixture of protein, carbs , fruits and veggies with fruit snacks along the way. We would highly recommend doing the trek with this travel company: https://turcol.co/ Music in this video deserves a Thanks to : " http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-..." I'll show you a tool I made a while ago. Its a DIY tool for catching, climbing and mooring with the boat.If you want to loop a rope around something that is hard to reach this diy tool is very useful. for example a cleat when mooring the boat ore a brench when climbing a tree or on the construction site when you need to secure a ladder.

Hello and welcome to the Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States podcast. This is part 1 of a two-part interview with Heath Moldveen, who is a technical sales rep for Sea Hawk Premium Yacht Finishes. It was a long interview, so we split it into 2 parts. In the first part, we had a great conversation about the various different types of anti-fouling paints, how to pick the best one for your boat and how location and boat use play a role in selecting bottom paint. We also discussed the process of painting, including the critical preparation steps. Heath also addressed what to look for when selecting a yard to paint the button on your boat. In part two of the podcast, Heath gives some great tips for the DIY person so you can get a professional result. Make sure and listen to both episodes. We love to hear from our listeners, send us your questions, comments, and suggestions at sailingtheeast@gmail.com. If you know someone that would be an interesting guest on the show, please reach out to us and let us know. Wishing you fair winds, and calm seas. Bela and Mike

In this video, Bye Bye Bootstripe and Barrier Coat - Cruising Sailboat Refit, I sand the waterline removing one of our boot stripes then apply barrier coat to cover it up and also paint over our recent keel joint patch. Following this I wet sand the old antifoul in preparation for new, and I wax the entire freeboard gelcoat surface using my boat wax and my new buffer tool. #sailingchannel #sailing #sailboatdiy #sailingaroundtheworld If you like our videos and want to see more/better videos, more often you can become a patreon supporter: https://www.patreon.com/sailingbalachandra If you haven't yet SUBSCRIBED and wan to see more please click the SUBSCRIBE button above, and be sure to give this video a like! We went into the harbor at Lagos because we had some visitors coming. While there, we met up with some other dutch cruisers. With our guests we visited Benagil to see the famous cave. We took a boat ride along the coast and this boat had an interesting way of docking/landing. While we were in the harbor we also did some maintenance on our boat... in the end we stayed 3,5 months... it all started with let's paint the gas locker. Enjoy watching Music by : Troy & Paula Haag

Open House information: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/open-house Put your name on a plank: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/merchandise New products hit next week! Sign up for the newsletter to have first dibs on offcuts: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Nearly every piece of wood in Arabella, from the backbone to the deck framing, came to this project as a tree. This means it wasn't ordered from the lumber yard or even from a mill, and that the many imperfections in each tree won't be known until it's milled—not just cut into boards, but put through a thickness planer. When one considers what is useable from a tree, it starts to become very real that our dwindling piles may present new challenges. For deckbeams and other important places where we want strength and rot resistance, we've employed locust for the job. The drawback? Locust grows quickly and wildly, twisting sometimes, the heart of it is sometimes gnarly and unusable for any woodworking project, let alone a boat. We open up the locust pile and discover that we've got to be very careful with how we use the rest. We get to an interesting steaming experiment as we try to figure out how we can use our stock for the locust covering boards. It's been a while since we've scarfed together some planks, but we get to the last two here. THE LAST TWO PLANKS. The sheer strake is of locust, the whiskey plank (the final plank on the boat) is of cedar. The last plank will go onto the boat on May 28th. More on that soon! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur boat builder building a 38' wooden boat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat Referral: Need something TotalBoat sells? SAILING LIFE New outboard motor gets test drive - Ep 151 The old outboard motor is sold, so it's out with the old and in with the new as we change motors over on the dinghy. To do this we need the help of the main halyard and a bit of muscle power. Declan got first dibs to take the new motor for a test drive. Then it's in to another borrowed car for a road trip to Margaret River to visit with our friends Dan and Sara, where Dan teaches us a bit about how the west was one by the 14 dollar Poms, and trees, lots of Karri trees and one particularly scary climb up the side of a very tall tree to help a damsel in distress. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Hello and welcome to the Sailing the East podcast. This is our podcast about sailing and cruising the east coast of the United States. In some episodes we will focus on passages and destinations, in other episodes, we will talk about boats, equipment, and techniques, and when we come across an interesting person, we will try to get them as a guest on the show. As our frequent listeners can tell, I am doing this episode solo today as my co-host Mike Wasserman could not make it. In this episode, we are going to discuss marine surveys and my experience when we purchased Paradox in September 2020. Paradox is a 2009 Hunter 45 DS. It's been 9 months since we took possession of Paradox. Since Paradox was on the hard for the Winter we have used paradox for about 3 months so far this season. We purchased her from the original owner and she had just under 200 hrs on the engine. That is a very lightly used boat. We hired a marine surveyor who was SAMS, and NAMS accredited. A surveyor typically goes through all of the systems on the boat, checks the hull and deck for damage or water intrusion, they may also do a rig inspection and test the oil in the engine, transmission, and generator and a do sea trial where you hoist the sails and run the engine under load. A typical survey in the North East of the United States cost between $25 to $35 per foot. This does not include paying a marina to lift the boat out of the water so the hull, rudder, and keel can be inspected. This is often called a Short Hall. This is typically $10-$15 foot. The recommendations from the surveyor were organized in to 4 groups. Legal requirements, These are things that need to be done to meet USCG requirements. Such are insufficient life jackets or expired single flares. The next group is Safety recommendations. For example, getting fire extinguishers recharged. Or repairing a non-working bilge pump. The third group is immediate attention. Replacing low batteries. The fourth group is Maintenance. Items like replacing the worn zincs and lubricating sea cocks. But what is the lesson learned here? Don’t just turn stuff on. Turn it on and let it run. Make sure it working and not just turning on. Put it through its paces. There are big items and not so big items. But if you are paying someone to check over the boat, they should cover it all. I was pleased with the survey and the surveyor. He did a good job and on a scale of 1 to 10, I would give him an 8. So, if you are considering buying a boat, in addition to being there with the surveyor for the survey, I would make it a condition of buying the boat to spend a day going through everything myself. Turning stuff on, letting it run. I would try to do this prior to the survey so anything you find can be pointed out to the surveyor and included in the survey report. It’s important to have stuff in the report because things uncovered during the survey give you grounds to walk away or renegotiate the price. Don’t rush, take your time, use it as a learning experience. Thanks for listening! We will be spending most of the summer sailing around Narragansett Bay, Long Island Sound, and Buzzards Bay. Hope to see you out on the water. We love to hear from our listeners, send us your questions, comments, and suggestions at sailingtheeast@gmail.com. Wishing you fair winds, and calm seas. Our 3 month refit rush to the water begins with the original design details that make a full refit of 1977 Rival 38 Centre Cockpit Ketch much easier. We throw in our 3 top tips to make a full refit much faster. Chapters: 0:00 Back at the boat 2:13 GRP Hull, Deck and joint 2:51 Deck without a core 4:44 Keel strength 6:49 No internal GRP mouldings 7:32 A fully separate aft cabin 8:22 Tip 1: Composting toilet 9:29 Tip 2: Remove all headlining 10:45 Tip 3: Replace all the windows 14:17 Bye Jane Some of the Sailing channels that we have learned from and seen these features work against them are: Sailing Magic Carpet. https://www.youtube.com/c/SailingMagicCarpet Their Cape George needing half the deck beams replacing, plus a lot of the plywood deck. Sail Life: https://www.youtube.com/c/SailLife Mads has replaced the deck core and fixed floor timbers, as well as keel repairs and gutting the interior. Spoondrifters: https://www.youtube.com/c/Spoondrifters see the issues with their toerail because there wasn't a watertight GRP joint. Sailing Soulianis: https://www.youtube.com/c/SailingSoulianis various Deck core issues Expedition Evans: https://www.youtube.com/c/ExpeditionEvans full structural rebuild with GRP Linings, Keel joint and iron keel Beau and Brandy Sailing: https://www.youtube.com/c/SailingSaoirse they nearly sank because an internal grp moulded water tank cut through the hull and then prevented access. Significant Keel Issues. Sailing Uma: https://www.youtube.com/c/SailingUma in the early days they discovered all the internal structure needed to hold their keel on was broken. Huge job to fix it. Wildlings Sailing. https://www.youtube.com/c/WildlingsSailing Nadiyana did an amazing job restoring their windows. But very, very hard to avoid leaks as nearly every channel with an old boat can't stop the leaks with the original windows. Look at the refits on "Sailing Uma", "Beau and Brandy Saiiing", "Bums on a Boat", "Sailing the good, bad and ugly", "Free Range Sailing" to see why a separate aft cabin would have helped. Composting toilet: Look at every boat diong a refit without one, also every boat doing horrible toilet fixes who doesn't have one. Headlining. An issue for everyone. Even with good headlinings, we suggest taking them down if you have any issues with leaks and not putting them up until the end or you will spend hours taking them down and putting them up multiple times. Two and a half years ago, when we bought Vida, she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel, and paraffin equipment as well as all the plumbing and electrics. We have composting toilets, are installing an electric motor and all electric cooking. We are fitting a huge solar array and probably a wind generator. We have replaced all the windows, removed all the headlining and more. We are replacing all the standing rigging with Dyneema synthetic rigging. This is the biggest sustainability project of our lives as we prepare for a retirement when we want to cruise the world using zero fossil fuels on a very low budget. We REMOVE our SAILBOAT Diesel Engine, What Next? In this episode we LIFT and REMOVE the Diesel Yanmar Engine Out of Our Sailboat, WITHOUT THE BOOM! We are getting close to getting out for a sail very soon as we have finally sourced the issue for the engine overheating and not starting… a bent conrod! We show you how to remove your engine, and how to remove the pistons and replace the connecting rods (conrod) and put the engine back together again. So, we rig up a hoist and out comes the diesel engine for a full rebuild. We get to work rebuilding our 30 Year-Old Diesel Engine in the Galley of our Sailboat! For a sailing couple with no experience this is no small feat, as we learn how to navigate boat life on board our tiny home and now how to navigate a full engine rebuild DIY style. Is this the end of the engine rebuild saga? We certainly hope so, but hang on for part 2 coming soon! Keep your fingers crossed we will be off sailing around the world very soon. #inhaul #inmast #furler #leroysomer #furlerservice #furlermaintenence #amelyachts #boatmaintenance There are two Leroy Somer motor/gearbox furlers on our Amel Supermaramu. As I had two different experiences servicing them, I've divided the servicing video into two separate maintenance blogs. In-mast furling mainsails wrap around a tube inside a hollow mast. They are unfurled by an outhaul furler and furled back in with an in-haul/in-mast furler. They're easy to reef from the cockpit while underway and there's no need to flake and cover the mainsail when done sailing, which makes furling easy to handle when short-handed. The downside is, if the sail is not handled properly while furling and unfurling, it can bunch up and jam inside the mast. There are many moving parts too, which can fail without routine servicing. So in this episode I service the in-haul/in-mast furler, which, by the looks of it, hadn't been serviced in the lifetime of the boat - which would have been over 20 years! I also add grease nipples / zerk fittings into the gearbox to make it easier to add grease and prevent future lubrication problems. If you would like see the video on the OUTHAUL FURLER, check it out here: https://youtu.be/D_YMk_5JNRI If you're a professional, expert or even an old salty sea dog with some good advice on how to service furlers or inmast furling systems in general, then please leave any constructive criticism, insight and advice in the comments below the videos. our FIRST night dive OH WOW - Sailing life - Ep 150 Busselton is a beautiful town, with the southern hemispheres longest wooden piled jetty at its heart. We abandoned the kids to dive into its clear waters on our first night dive ever. Getting in and out of the dinghy was spooky but the dive was invigorating. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #TheCruisingKiwis #150

The time has arrived to get started on rebuilding the forward cabin of our Westsail 42. It's current state is one of general disarray and incompleteness. Really, the only part that's even partially finished are the boards on the wall, but most of those are beginning to fall off under their own weight. To begin our DIY interior sailboat refit, we strip the walls bare, label all of the parts, and remove the old adhesive to get down to the bare hull. After that, we start epoxying the smaller upright boards back onto the walls so that we never have to worry about them falling apart again. Tambi was a huge help and I love having her company at the boat anytime she can break away and assist me with our refit projects. More about our last Open House ever: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/visitor-welcome How could there possibly be ways to do something new while building something as ancient and simple as a wooden boat? We're sure this isn't the first time someone's used a sled to control a tool as it moves along a surface, but as far as we've read, this may be either the first time or a never-talked about/never-published way of removing material from deck beams to get reference points quickly and accurately. Typically a boatbuilder will use a batten to check fairness, remove material, check fairness, remove material, move to a different part of the deck, check fairness, remove material, go back to the spot where one just was, check fairness, remove material.... and so on, telegraphing shape, sweep, bevel and depth across a surface curved in all three dimensions, and upon which must rest straight planking stock. Here we use, primarily, a Makita 7" grinder with a gnarly 40-grit disc and two runs of what is basically deck planking facsimile. What goes into the decision about the shape of the cabin house? We reveal the thought process behind the balances that must be struck between the desire for interior space, the aspects needed for deck accommodations such as propane tanks and extra diesel and gasoline, and the needs regarding the rig and dinghy. It's a lot to hold in one's head, so Steve gets his thoughts out with KP as they think about reducing the height of the cambered cabinhouse. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Beyond excited to finally install Lithium Batteries onboard Popao, this is absolutely life-changing for any live-aboard sailor let alone ones who need plenty of editing power. We compare the Itechworld 120x batteries to our old lead-acid and it is pretty mind-blowing how fast this technology has evolved. Of course, nothing is that simple and we decided to rewire half of Popao in the process.
